some of the picture ARE from the game, but are either a weirder colour or u rarely see them(like the sea at junon)
eg: tifa's bar is actually a bar in junon where the turks meet up before u first board the boat to reach costa del sol, and the pictures of "gt city of ancients" IS the underground city of the ancients (where aeris * u know)

The easiest thing for me to do is to write a small "commentary" on each pic.
http://www.trealms.org/anonftp/uff7/caveof1.JPG" TARGET=_blank>http://www.trealms.org/anonftp/uff7/caveof1.JPG   -Either a beta shot or someone's joke. Sure is a fuzzy pic...

http://www.trealms.org/anonftp/uff7/ff7-unknownchild.bmp" TARGET=_blank>http://www.trealms.org/anonftp/uff7/ff7-unknownchild.bmp   -Obviously a shot of Marlene from the ending video.
http://www.trealms.org/anonftp/uff7/bahamutbeta.JPG" TARGET=_blank>http://www.trealms.org/anonftp/uff7/bahamutbeta.JPG   -Bahamut beta or joke.
http://www.sol.no/games/psgamer/pre_rpg/ff7/city1.jpg" TARGET=_blank>http://www.sol.no/games/psgamer/pre_rpg/ff7/city1.jpg   -Cosmo Canyon beta or joke.

the shots from gias cliff look more like early attempts at the scene where u gotta drop the icicle? they might have changed it cos it doesnt really fit in....
the artwork is from sqauresoft artists, u usually get a bunch of those to get the overall feel for the characters before they r created in 3d. if u goto http://www.rpgamer.com" TARGET=_blank>www.rpgamer.com  look under games/final fantasy/ff7/artwork ull see loads more, plus in other games u will see artwork too.

Comment on the first pic: I think during the development of FF7 they had a scene where the ancient key is, but for some reason it was scrapped. This would seem to be 'proof'.

Strange . . .

The woman in the picture that is supposedly early artwork of Cloud very slightly resembles Terra.

I don't think the dude in the picture resembles any FF6 character, though.

Looks like Cloud and Aeris, Amano-style.  I could certainly believe it to be early artwork under those circumstances....

As for the laker.net pic... looks like a Debug Room fight; not entirely sure, but it looks like a group of Grunts and a Sweeper in the Northern Crater battle backdrop (might be wrong about the Sweeper and the backdrop; been a long time since I last played FF7).

Oh, and Srethron?  The pics are from the FF SGI demo.  Not the FF OVA.  Original Video Animation (or OVA) is generally used to mean an animated series not part of the main story... it's basically an anime based on FF5 (just as GameSpot says).

I'm also not so sure the ShinRa Heirarchy pic was done by a fan.  It's possible, but that same pic I saw in RPGamer under Square Art.  (It *was* missing the 'copyright 1997 Square' bit though).  It certainly *looks* very authentic... although the version with the copyright logo on also seems touched up from the original I've seen (the original I saw has lines that are less defined, and the only white in the picture is that in the ShinRa EPC logo...)

In any case, the information given in that image also seems very authentic (from what I can decipher of the kana, anyway).  It wouldn't surprise me if the image you're looking at is a touched-up version, but I'm still doubtful it was done by a fan.

The first two look like scans from a magazine.  Almost like its was blown up on a scanner and someone tried to apply a blur to it.  Also notice in the first pic, there actually appears to be two images of Cloud in the picture (the one front and center, and one more - upper left almost appearing to be in a cave entrance)

huh? i dont 3 clouds???
besides the object in the middle of the beam of light slightly resembles the key to the ancients. it all looks abit too flash for ff7, all the ivy style leaves every where just isnt right, notice the leaves "in front" of the camera? i cant remember a normal scene with objects as close to the camera as that.

Actually, there are two Clouds in the first pic... because if you look carefully, the second pic is a blow up of the top-left hand corner of the first, with a little extra added on.  It does indeed look like a magazine shot where someone has combined two pics (one smaller, one larger) to show a demonstration.

And I can think of a number of places that look similar to that screen... Ancient Forest has much the same style, as do the secret Materia caves and the Northern Crater.  Even the Mythril Mines has a similar kind of style.

While most FF7 scenes do have an almost overhead detached view, some are *meant* to have greater depth and use a more 'flashy' angle.  One of the best viewable instances of this is the bridge leading into Corel; Cloud's running all the way into the screen.  Nibelheim on fire (while in Jenova's illusion in the Northern Crater) is another example, as is certain parts of Sector 8 during Disc 3 (particularly the second screen in, with the big girders in front).

The major reason you often don't get things that close to the camera is because it's really difficult to deal with that kinda stuff if you need the room to scroll as well.  It just doesn't look right.  Plus, it can also obscure the player's view of the characters.  In the beta scene provided, both of these problems are avoided; the room is only one screen big, and the leaves are at the top while all the walking area is at the bottom.

Remember.  The discovery of the Key of the Ancients isn't meant to be a normal scene; it's meant to be similar to the secret Materia caves.  If you look at it from that point of view (and if you assume that it *is* a beta of such a room), then it fits right into FF7, easily.

Really, I don't see the problem.  It's obviously not a scene in the finished game, but it could've fit right in easily.

yeah, in pic 1 you can see the doorway which cloud is standing in front of in pic 2. the guy who drew the pic must have been gutted it wasnt put in the game. but i dont see why it wasnt, then again the one they did use *is* better i guess.

The Skillster: Actually, I started thinking about that after I posted, and I agree. And thanks for the info. I'm convinced now that that's definately Amano concept artwork.

Qhimm: Thanks for the info.

Terence: I suppose it could be. Sure looks like a funny Super Sweepr in that pic though. And IIRC, you only ever run into 2 grunts when they're with the Super Sweeper. Also (but this doesn't necessarily mean anything), the "grunts" from the pic are more of a purple than a lighter blue.

Thanks for the correction. I thought it was the OVA because Gamespot's picture of it is right beside the section on the page about the OVA.

I was probably wrong about the Shinra Heirarchy as well. It looks too good to be something the average fan could whip up.
