With the recent upswing in the amount of soundtracks being remade these days does anyone think it is a good idea to have a seperate forum for Musical mods?
-
Maybe not a bad idea, depending on how much interest there is in it. We have:
- FinalFanTim
- SymphoniC
- NetHead
- FF7Music troubleshooting and whatnot
-
I was thinking of changing the project subforums to:
Musical Mods
Graphical Mods
Gameplay Mods
Tools

I like it! Excellent idea.
Not sure how you're planning to implement it, but I would get rid of the child boards and make a Projects Forums much like Public and Private Forums, then have the 4 listed under that.
-
How about this.
Final Fantasy VII
Musical Mods
Graphical Mods
Gameplay Mods
Tools
Final Fantasy VIII
Musical Mods
Graphical Mods
Gameplay Mods
Tools
There are mods coming out for Final Fantasy VIII and I thought it should get it's own section.
-
Except there really aren't that many FFVIII mods coming out.
I do like the idea of separating mods by type, it'll make it much easier to find things.

Great idea. I'd suggest that if you do get rid the general purpose forum, a WIP forum be created. Or a release forum which is wat the child boards currently are.
I like the fact that you can keep track of what's in the works vs what's done.
-
Instead of Music let's call it Audio to avoid being limited to just music

Since WIPs are also generally going to be of a specific type, maybe each mods could have its own WIP subforum.
Where would all-encompassing things like remix or bootleg go?
-
Hmm so maybe like this...
Audio Mods
-> Releases
Graphical Mods
-> Releases
Gameplay Mods
-> Releases
Tools

That would be the exact setup I would do since Tools get developped in scripting and engineering most of the time if I'm not mistaken.

Personally I think it'd be better to have the releases as the main boards and the WIPs as child boards, like this:
Audio Mods
-> WIPs
Graphical Mods
-> WIPs
Gameplay Mods
-> WIPs
Tools
But that's just me. They're both an improvement over the current system.

I share Sir Cov of Arr thoughts on this, have the WiP sections as the child boards.

Given a choice, I personally prefer searching through released mods.
When I'm modding my game, I'd like to know what's finished easily rather than browse through Releases and discussions as they'll get jumbled together unless there's a specific release subforum.
But wathever the majority decides is best.

That was my thought as well. Not to mention it will be alot easier for the staff to move files around. Going through 30+ pages of threads in projects is not going to be an easy task.
-
I'm for it too :) WIPs as Child Boards
BTW, maybe it'd be more work but what about totally getting rid of the Projects forum? I didn't understand if it was intended...
Perhaps make a "Raw Projects" then "WIPs" and "Discontinued" Child Boards to make it easier :)
-
There's been several questions about requests too. Should there be one for that? Maybe just a sticky in the master "Projects" forum?
Also, if they are separated again, would only authors be allowed to post in their projects' topics and have a separate one for talking about them or are we going to continue having dozens of pages to sort through to find a bug since the last version?
-
The reason for my thinking is that every mod is either finished (release), or unfinished (WIP). Either way, one forum is gonna have one of them and the subforum is gonna have the rest. It's no easier either way, but I'd figured releases would be more significant than WIPs, so it makes sense to make releases the parent and WIPs the child.
-
I was thinking of all the remnants of discussions from when it was called game tweaking. Its easier to make the main one WIP and only move releases over to a child board. Plus I wouldnt want all the releases lumped in with all the irrelevant discussion until we had time to clean it up.
-
That actually makes a lot of sense.
I officially rescind support for my suggestion. You're on your own, Vgr and DragonNinja.

I do that on a rare occasion :P
-
Well, I also think, after all, that RELs should be in Child boards, since it'd be easier to understand and find them.
-
In the process of setting things up. Please bear with me during the transition time.
-
Well I moved some stuff. Once all of this is done I suppose it will be time to tackle CU and Troubleshooting.
-
What's the difference between Projects and the Mods subsection? Are Mods releases and Projects WIPs?

Pretty Much. The whole idea is to have releases in their own area for easy locating. Plus it keeps them seperate from all the other discussion that can bury things a few pages back. I think I am going to have to make another section for stuff that just doesnt fit elsewhere.
-
Wait, so the projects forum is staying? I thought everything was eventually going to be moved.

So did I. However, looking at the amount of mods left in projects after being cleaned up, I think Projects should become Misc Mods and be moved under the Final Fantasy Mods Category as its clear some mods don't fit in elsewhere (translation patches, etc).
I think keeping it as is is a bit confusing though.
You guys sure like to give yourself some work though. Hadn't realized you'd move every single past project in there but definitely going to be easier to find stuff in the future! :P
-
Projects will stay until we are able to sort through all the threads and place them where they belong.
-
So we're clear, what dictates a release? When the project is through or once the very first barely working alpha version is uploaded?
-
Good question, thoughts anyone?
-
How far a project needs to come really depends on what it aims to do and how its creator is going about doing it. Probably best to let individual mod authors decide, or choose on a case-by-case basis.
-
Note to everyone: The archive is read only. We will slowly be moving project discussions that are still relevant to the proper forums. In the meantime if there is something in there you need to post in please PM me or one of the other staff to move it to its proper location.
-

Once the project reaches beta quality ?
-
As definable by what exactly? What the author determines is beta?
The problem with this is many people do not designate releases as such.
-
I agree however a project that's just starting out is still a WIP and some projects are never officially released by the autors.
I don't see any way other than a case by case approach where a mod is deemed complete enough to see release or not.
-
How about we'll just judge based by how buggy it is. The buggier, the less likely to be put in releases.
-
That's a good idea. However, I rather see it as "the most complete" instead of "the most buggy".
