D00dz, this thread is like a litmus test for FF7 fanboyism. Do you understand that you have argued for three pages over one syllable? ONE. f***ING. SYLLABLE. Which doesn't even really change the meaning of the name, I'd say that the link between Aerith and Earth is pretty weak - you won't lose much if you call her Aeris.

Exactly. Topic closed.

Bullsh*t there isn't. That was the f***ing point of this thread. You sir, are a nuisance to society.
Cut it.

I know her name i just want to see who all know it.
Both Aerith and Aeris are valid answers as the character on the picture appeared using both names. It doesn't matter which name she had originally or that she was called Aerith in all games except for FF7. And no, it's not an opinion what her name is.

"There is a God"  Opinion but one which does have a definate answer
Actually, that's not an opinion but a claim. If the claim could be proven right, then it would become a fact. If it could be proven wrong, then it would become a lie.
The problem is that in this case it can neither be proven right nor proven wrong (at least as long as you live), so it remains to be a claim.

Troubleshooting / Re: Play the PC on PSX
« on: 2009-04-16 11:58:44 »
As MrAdults said, this question is perfectly legitimate. In my opinion, it's basically the same question as asking whether one can run a PSX or PS2 game on a PC - and as far as I know, that's also the goal of Q-Gears, at least for FF7 and some other Square's games - not to mention the emulators.

As mentioned before, running the PC Version of FF7 on a PS2 is theoretically possible, however, a huge amount of work would be necessary. And noone is ever going to do that work and rewrite and/or recompile the PC engine for a PS2.

@ hotdog963al, ignitz, ultima espio, Trenholm, cactusjack901, JordieBo:
Since we now have figured out, that neither the question was as stupid as it might sound nor the answer is "obviously no", the role of the "fool" in this discussion has suddenly changed with MrAdults first answer, as you 1337 h4x0rs weren't competent enough to give the correct (or at least a non-flaming) answer.
If you have nothing useful to say, simply shut up.

As everyone of us was taught, there are no stupid questions, there are only stupid answers, as seen in this thread.

@ Richgirl80billion:
Calm down, girl. There's one important lesson in life that you have learned in this topic: The world around you is full of idiots.

@ halkun:
I do see your point with this being a tech-related forum, where people spend a great amount of time and work with this stuff. I also see that posting such a question makes the author look like a fool in the eyes of the ones who know the answer. The question may come from lack of knowledge and understanding, but I don't see any reason to give answers which come from lack of respect.

I'd like to compare this situation with an university, which is also a place where experts, who work for years or decades on a specific topic, and n00bs, which just came out of school to study, collide. Every day, students come to the professors asking questions which are often trivial to the latter ones. Of course, every student could skip his/her lessons and instead buy, read and understand a bunch of books which explain nearly everything that the student needs to know to answer all his/her questions by himself/herself. But I'm not sure what would happen if professors would start flaming their students because of being asked trivial questions...

Mod Edit: Topic closed - because of flaming, not because of stupid questions.

Nice job, Aali.

I just wonder that noone discovered the possibility of injecting a custom graphics driver into the engine before, especially since there have been several patches developed for the internal engine.

And we thought that we have already reached the limits of the original engine years ago...  :-P

 - Edit - 2007-09-10 -
Thanx to julian and Mantrid for mailing the file I requested to me.

- Original Post -

I also have played Bioshock, and I must say I enjoyed it...and I'm sure I'll enjoy it even more as soon as my new graphics card arrives this weeks...

And now I'm enjoying decoding Bioshock's game archive format :D

Although this is a bit off-topic:
Does anyone in here have the Bioshock demo installed...?
I am asking because there is something I need to verify with the game archive format, however, I only have the retail version of the game, and I need a file from the demo for comparison.
The file I need is called "Catalog.bdc" and is located in the "Content\BulkContent" folder. The file's total size is ~200KB. (If you compress it, it should be even ~20KB)

So, if someone has got the demo installed, would you kindly mail it to me...?
(mail: [username]@[username].com)

Thanks

 - Edit -
I decided to provide some closer information for those who are interested what I'm going to do with that file...

The .bdc file is the TOC (table-of-contents) for the game archives (those with the .blk ending).
The .bdc file holds all the interesting information as filenames, file sizes and file offsets, however, it does not (directly) contain the number of files that are stored in a .blk file. The Bioshock developers have "encrypted" this information.
I have been working for over 4 hours to decode the algorithm that decrypts that information and calculates the number of files.

I'll post a small table here...
Code: [Select]
Filename                     Data  Files  Algo
----------------------------------------------
0-lighthouseLevel.blk        1395    372   372
1-medicalLevel.blk           3141    774   774
1-welcomeLevel.blk           2671    688   688
2-fisheriesLevel.blk         2905    730   730
2-subbayLevel.blk             603    156   156
3-arcadiaLevel.blk           3144    777   777
3-marketLevel.blk            2128    529   529
4-recreationLevel.blk        3197    830   830
5-hephaestusLevel.blk        1906    499   499
5-ryanLevel.blk              1116    285   285
6-resiLevel.blk              2923    748   748
6-slumsLevel.blk             2669    686   686
7-bossfightLevel.blk          639    192   192
7-GauntletLevel.blk          1636    421   421
7-scienceLevel.blk           2900    725   725
DynamicBulkFileTextures.blk  8011   1996  1900
In the first column, you see the filenames of the archive files. The second column contains the encrypted file counts, the third one contains the real file counts. And in column four, you see the results decoded by my algorithm.

As you can see, my algorithm works correct for all files except "DynamicBulkFileTextures.blk"...
The file from the demo version has less files than the one in the retail version, therefore I might have a chance to fix the problem, but I will need the TOC file from the demo version...

By the way, before anyone says I could download the demo by myself:
I've got a internet connection with a traffic limit of 3GB/month, and all I need from the 1.8GB Demo is a 200KB file...

Q-Gears / Re: Advetising?

At the moment, I'm very busy with exams at university, but maybe in 6 months or so I'll be able to join Q-Gears as a programmer.

It's a few years ago I have been working on FF7's system, and I don't have that much experience in game programming as some of you, but I think I can give you a helping hand here...

Unfortunately, I do not have any copies of the other tools... :(

Ehm, primes don't have anything to do with derivatives...

Oh besides, does anyone know that there is something similar to Metroids in maths? They're called Matroids!

I have a list with some mathematical jokes, however, they are in German, and most of them use idioms - so they're hardly translateable...
Maybe I find some which are not so hard to translate...

Nach einem Bericht der «Bild»-Zeitung (Dienstag) sollen sich die beiden 17-Jährigen bei ihrer Bluttat an dem Gewalt-Computerspiel «Final Fantasy VII» orientiert haben.(...)

Quote from: Bad English Translation
The newspaper 'Bild' said on Tuesday, the the two 17-years old boys have imitated the violent game 'Final Fantasy 7'...
(Oh man, I'm not a good translator, you see... :( )

I have also found the 'Bild' report with the FF7-part (Note: Bild is a newspaper, but not a serious one...)
Quote from: Bild

Quote from: Bad English Translation
The two boys, both know as very kind and friendly, have imitated the computer game "Final Fantasy 7". On a fictive planet, there is a battle beween "good and evil".
The idols of the boys: "Sephiroth", who kills innocent people with his sword. And "Reno" who is supposed to kill the leader of the good ones. (...)
On the evening of the murder they have been talking to each other using their nicknames. Did they want to be like their idols, kill without mercy, as they have been practicing on their computers a few hundret times before?

But I don't see where Bild called FF7 a violent game... damn press...

PS: The thread title in German would be: "Final Fantasy VII ist ein Killerspiel!" (right, Alhexx?  :-D).
Right, I corrected that...

I have heard about that murder on radio a few days ago, but that was directly after the murder happened - so there haven't been any details about the murderers released then.

USA is not the only country on this planet where insane kids walk into schools and start shooting around - the most popular case was in the Gutenberg Gymnasium in Erfurt a few years ago. There were discussions about games like Counter-Strike, violent splatter horror movies and music bands as Slipknot...

I just wait for the government now to forbit FF7 in german - that would be typical for germans - simply forbit a "problem" and try to do so as if it was solved now...

Quote from: RW_66
The wheels allow the airframe to move in the opposite direction of the "thrust" from the engines. The wheels are NOT supplying any motive force, they simply allow the aircraft to roll over the surface. HOWEVER, some kinetic force is transfered to the ground, which lessens somewhat as it picks up speed (until the airflow "lift" cancels it out entirely). This is because GRAVITY is trying to pull/hold the mass of the aircraft down to the ground. The friction between the wheels/ground is irrelevent.
This is paradox...

Quote from: RW_66
Here, somebody went wrong big time. The conveyor belt, by moving in the opposite direction to the "thrust vector" of the aircraft, CANCELS OUT the forward motion of the aircraft, in relation to the surrounding air. It's NO DIFFERENT than a person, bike, or car "keeping pace" on a treadmill. The method of force tranferance doesn't matter, the results are still the same. ZERO relative movement to the surrounding air.
What you are saying is that the aircraft does not try to pull air from in front of it to behind it. But it does.
And that's the main differerence between a car and an aircraft. The car tries to pull the street by rotating its wheels.
I do not say that the plane takes off because it pulls air, but it moves because of this. The shape of the aircraft makes it fly as soon as there is enough airflow.

In your theory, saying that there is no movement relative to the air surrounding the plane when the plane does not move (as you claim), that would mean that the air does not move either. But it does, since the engine of the aircraft is pulling it. That's a contradiction.
