60FPS FF7 Videos
« on: 2011-11-03 05:45:36 »
My first time posting on the forums here. Just have to say that I'm blown away by the talent here. The technical and creative skill by the mod community here is outstanding. Possibly my favorite game of all time, which also happened to be released on birthday, not surprisingly.

Though the mods have brought this game practically to a state of perfection, I believe the glaring problem in need of improvement is framerate. On both platforms (PC, PSX) 15 fps is really choppy and this flaw is brought to the forefront even more on HDTV's and PC monitors.

I'm currently in the process of converting all the videos to 60fps by doing a quasi 4x framerate conversion similar to LCD HDTV's "120hz, 240hz" Tried out out the opening scene first since there is a ton of judder. The end result is astounding. Will post a link for a preview soon. I think it should be an option in the installer.

Thanks to all who selflessly contribute to the restoration of this classic!

Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ERD8WCYgsk&hd=1
Though youtube limits playback to 30fps, you can still get an idea of the quality. Let me know what you guys think.

nice work, i tried this a long time ago but ended up not doing it because of problems when using the video's in-game, have you solved these problems ? for example when i did that opening the guards didn't appear at the right times, they just appeared at the end of the video which sort of looked messed up. (i also remember there being a few other problems but that was the biggest since all videos that had characters on screen where messed up)

Believe thats because they use the FPS of the video as a que for spawning the models. If we can perfect the 60FPS mod, then we would solve that issue as well.

I'm not as technical as everyone else here however, so correct me as needed :D

Correct me if i am wrong, but I believe that when a fmv has to display 3d characters on top of the fmv it does it on a frame basis (ie. Display guard starting at frame 234). If you increase the fmv's then the characters will display at the wrong time and the animations will also be too short for the fmv. This theoretically could be fixed though.

This is beautiful. I've seen a few attempts at this where the motion estimation is glitchy and inconsistent, but this one seems to get the job done quite nicely. I'm impressed!

Looks especially awesome in hi-def. Did you remake the sequence from scratch?

It looks nicer than other attempts, however, fast moving things like the cars suffer from severe distortion...

Well, after numerous attempts to fix the artifacts I have given up. I am using the best script possible for motion interpolation. Have used several variations. Takes about 4-5x the length of the video to encode and thats with an overclocked i7 with a decent nvidia gpu. You can do this in realtime as well provided you have a good enough cpu/gpu but the artifacts just gets a lot worse. Best hardware based implemented motion interpolation that I have seen was from pioneer with there kuro plasmas. 24 -> 72 hz. Loewe crt tv's were the first to have this feature, phillips plasmas had an external box in early 2000.

As good as the videos end up looking, the file size is about 2x and some introduce way to many artifacts such as clouds motorbike scene. However some are flawless lol, "eidos logo"... 15 -> 30 is much better overall for the worst 60fps conversions. I'm ok with the small amounts of distortion that crop up for the smoothness of 60fps.

It isn't your fault... that is the nature of filters.

Huh? I don't get any framerate problems O.o
Though I do have an enthusiast gaming PC, this game doesn't take even a Geforce 6000 to run smoothy, surely xD
Also I share your love of FFVII Neo! Though my birthday isn't same day as release, you jammey dodger! :pp
