Troubleshooting / Re: [FF8]FF8Launcher

I say bring on the Final Fantasy VIII content, no matter what it is. I bet there are so many hidden gems stowed away in this game. We're still unsurfacing things from VII even with all of our programs to tear it apart. Wouldn't surprise me if half of VIII was ripped away as well.

This is exactly what I've been wishing for, thank you. I'll give this a try and if it works out well enough, I may finally pick my restoration project back up.

If you guys don't already have one, it might be a wise idea to create a database for project materials you can upload your WIPs, finished pieces, and reference materials onto. This will provide a back-up should anyone have hardware problems or difficulty completing certain tasks. Downloads could be limited to team members only, while anyone else is free to review the contents. This doubles in function allowing aspiring contributors to know what's already done or being worked on so they don't cover unnecessary ground. It might also be a little motivating to see your own hard work piled together in one organized system.  :)

As much as it pains me to say it, we might all be better off donating to a fund and hiring some smaller time professionals/soon-to-be professionals who are going to take this seriously. If what I saw was any indicator, the project looked appealing to all until they saw the massive work involved. People, FFVII has a LOT of dialog. It's not some "Oh sweet a chance to be a star!" kind of affair, you're looking at a lot of work. Anyone who is in school or has long term plans other than voice acting should pretty much be shown the door.

Releases / Replacement FMVs for FFVII

No, they can exceed that.

nikfrozty,
I'll see if I can upload what I've got when I have the time and motivation to do so, but it's definitely possible (not theoretically, anyone here can do it) and the opcode information relevant to this can be found readily on the Qhimm wiki. Otokoshi should be familiar with this as well. Off the top of my head, you're dealing with these:

Releases / Replacement FMVs for FFVII
« on: 2010-05-21 14:48:15 »
The FF7 field script sets a number of frames to count and soon after calls the movie. Once the frame count is up, the script resumes when the movie is expected to stop. If the frames exceed or fall short of this frame count as called on by the field script, then you experience oddities. Aali can possibly come up with some wizardry to bypass it, but one solution would be to bundle the FMVs with different frame rates alongside field files to insert that have been modified to accommodate them. This can be done in Meteor and fortunately is none too difficult, however the downside is that modifying the field files will make them incompatible with any other mods which alter them. On the other hand, you can always make compatibility patches down the road so it's not too big of a downside.

As an example of the potential for this, a project I was working on before I got tired of Meteor's slowness was to completely modify the beginning cutscene. I had a 30 fps video with the PS3 tech demo train rolling into the station, a prerecorded video of the guards being taken out and Barret waving to Cloud added onto the end of that, and finally the PS3 tech demo Cloud jumping off the train and landing. Field script was modified to start actual game events already on the ground with the prior events already wrapped up.

There are ways around everything.

There we go. He's being f***ing sincere and ready to move on. Can Qhimm.com move on and lay the past to rest? Please... consider it before posting something snide. This is the perfect chance to fix everyone's problem, don't let egos make it blow up in your faces.

Also, it has come to my attention that I'm an idiot and am really confused about all the freaking alt. accounts on Qhimm.com.  ???

You'll have to forgive me as once again, I don't know who's 1000 aliases belong to who. I was thinking Hermoor = Seifer for some reason.

Lulzopedia? I'm not bringing up the cyber-bully argument but rather; why bother? Why bring it to prominence? Erase shit like that, ban as necessary, don't feed the troll. The situation seemed pretty avoidable to me on all sides, and both sides are still keeping it going by continuing to stoke the fire. Wanting a person to die is pretty uncalled for, but in the grand scheme of things I doubt he's over where ever he lives and stocking up on weapons to kill you. Making lulzopedias and declaring the forum can fend for itself after having irritated the situation worse isn't exactly any better.

I guess what I'm saying here is, somebody needs to delete ALL this crap and deal with this in a normal manner instead of making a parade out of one or two people. Poking someone with a stick clearly hasn't worked, how long has it been? Sometimes, just saying the right things can be more effective than having mod status.

This entire situation is disgusting on both sides. Look at yourselves. I rarely come here anymore although I've kept up with all this drama by lurking, but I come here because this is the hub of Final Fantasy VII development with no peer. Why is everyone treating it like some virtual world and hampering progress by bashing people you've never met face to face?

Why the hell is this fight still going on with Hermoor when instead you all should be shaking hands, let the guy start a thread for his project, and if you don't like it here's a great idea: DON'T READ THE THREAD!

On the flipside, Hermoor what are you trying to prove by continuing to try to piss people here off? I get it. Your ego is hurt. Your "situation" was treated like sh*t by the mods and admins and you have reason to be a little upset but let it go. You're working on your project for the sake of FF7, not the forum. If you're not, you need to be. So you don't fit in with the crowd. Who cares? You don't seem to be a bad person when you're not letting yourself sink into flame wars like this.

For what it's worth, this crap is bringing out the worst in all of you.

General Discussion / Re: Honey Bee Inn beta version video
« on: 2010-02-12 01:56:35 »
The stairs really threw me off when I first saw the level layout. I thought maybe at first it was a downstairs area, but now I would guess that this was the original entrance to the Honey Bee Inn, and perhaps the stairs would have led to the "new" entrance with the receptionist bee who keeps telling you to hurry up. The other two rooms that have been shown/translated are more than likely supposed to connect to this original entrance, especially given the signs - "Today's Girl" would be Tifa who everyone wants to come back, while the other room is a waiting room.

Of course, this is just speculation based on what I've seen so far and what I know, so I'll reserve further commenting until more material is revealed. For those wanting this on PC there may be a solution with Meteor, requiring exporting and inserting the background into a new ONNA file, making a new walk mesh, and making some of the field script by hand. I don't think it would be as difficult as it first seems, but again I'll wait until everything is on the table to comment further because it would be nice to know exactly where everything was supposed to go.

Troubleshooting / Re: Can't get METEOR to run
« on: 2010-01-24 21:37:03 »
My best guess is that you're running another program, maybe in the background, which conflicts with it. You should be able to run it just fine.

I've been hoping someone would write a superior program to Meteor, something that can edit on the fly ala Loveless without having to decompress, edit, and compress again with the correct "ritual". It makes overhauling the game VERY, VERY annoying, slow, and it was my opinion that it wasn't worth it.

I'm always uncovering rare gems from geocities sites, things I previously never knew about. Now, a lot of that I'll never find. A pity. There's the Internet Archive, but these pages often do not include anything aside from text.

Completely Unrelated / Re: mount and blade: Wutai War
« on: 2009-11-01 00:21:52 »
No, hell no. Mount & Blade is THE medieval combat simulator. No other game in existence captures horse mounted combat the way this does. It's been a favorite game of mine since mid-2008. It's not an MMORPG, and unless Warbands is out, it's not even multiplayer yet.

Wutai War would be cool as a full fledged mod. Kind of funny picturing Shinra soldiers mowing down Wutai horses though, the samurai falling off, and Sephiroth running in and beating the crap out of them.

Still wanting 1866 more, though.

I applaud this project's persistence in seeing things through to the end. Good luck with finding your voice actors.

Unbelievable, I was starting to think it was somehow impossible for modelers to create an original style buster sword accurately and with the correct hole location. If I owned the entire internet, I would give it to you. Good job.

I had the new program dziugo wrote for it to test out with what files were done, it's not released yet if that's what you're getting at. As for the PM you sent, I'm not working on the project anymore so I don't know the status.

« on: 2009-09-22 04:13:06 »
Man these are terrible, my dead grandfather could put out better textures. Stop while you can!

Just messing.   Glad to see this is being done, I can only imagine how many total backgrounds there are in the game. You should skip ahead to where you fight the boss in Junon when you rescue Priscilla at some point just to look at it, I wonder how the background works since if I recall correctly, there's water with waves in it during the battle. Might be best to figure it out in advance so you know what to do later?

Thinking out loud here I suppose. Good work so far, looking forward to the polished finals.

Fair enough, props for the dedication in that case. I lose interest in arguments pretty quickly, even just poking fun.

At first I started to go into a huge paragraph about that show then said screw it because I realized how silly it was to pick it apart. Like I said, grossly skimmed.

I'll take your word on the long story.

For the record I'm not putting down the Japanese style either, after all I'm on this forum having enjoyed FF7 and plenty of other RPGs that arguably fit the same design form as a lot of Japanese anime. I just can't sit down and watch anime, but to be fair I don't sit down for much of anything anymore aside from the occasional documentary or fight.

Anyways I'm already A.D.D.ing out on this, so I'll step aside and you two can continue.

I don't see why there's an argument going on here, when you cut through the crap, that Japanese animation is somehow "deeper" than western animation or visa versa. Most Japanese animation has more complex themes, definitely, but complex does not equal deeper. I could argue that The Fox and The Hound, rife with childish songs and simplicity is just as deep because of that simplicity. We can connect with the idea of being best friends with someone, moving away, growing apart, then seeing each other later in life as opposites. That is deep because nearly all of us have had that happen to us, and it sucked. How many of us have gone through a post-apocalyptic setting dealing with child abuse by greedy superiors trying to meet their own goals at our expense?

I get it, I get that you have to think more and I've grossly skimmed an idea, but so what? You think about the stories more and more, but it still doesn't connect with you. The only thing you walk away with is gratification that you understand fully what the director was trying to convey, a vague philosophy about one thing or another. But does it apply to you on a mental or emotional level?

I guess what I'm getting at here is that Japanese animation intends to bond you to the characters in the film, make you experience their lives and connect with their actions. It's emotional, but mostly because you feel for the characters. Western animation - comedy aside - tries to connect with the viewer and create scenarios that parallel life experiences they can already relate to or will likely experience at some point in their life. It's simplistic emotion. It's no surprise that the two styles are so different, with Westerners (me included, I'm not ashamed to say) fueled by simple emotions and the Japanese being more philosophical.

Regardless, this is all a bit moot anyhow. Western culture is so different that anime is mostly viewed as "nerdy" and nobody wants to associate with it. This puts a serious cap on efforts to tell epic stories, and is a large reason why most epic stories make their way into live action and not anime here. Nobody can possibly say with a straight face that westerners have not created MANY live action stories with complex themes. If animating these ideas was more profitable without that "nerd" stigma attached to it, it would happen more often.

My two cents on the matter, agree to disagree if you see things differently cause I'm not slinging mud over it.

Yeah, the program right now (unless there's been a change) stops the currently playing dialog and plays the next one if you skip, so you don't have to sit there and listen if you don't want to.

...but you know you want to.

If we're going off cartoons, hmm... I watched and enjoyed a lot as a kid. I didn't particularly care for a lot of Disney ones, but Lion King really stood out at me and had a great theme about facing your problems. I also liked the animated Robin Hood cartoon where he was depicted as a fox. Speaking of foxes, The Fox and The Hound was another good one. The Lion King is probably more complete, but I always enjoyed The Fox and the Hound most.

The only anime I ever enjoyed was Berserk. I never got around to watching the Heavy Metal movies, but I've been wanting to.

Team Avalanche / Re: [REL] Team Avalanche's 2D Overhaul
« on: 2009-09-13 21:03:56 »
Damn, that's true. I'm still working on my restoration project behind the scenes (away from the C&Ding eyes of Square) and that'd definitely conflict seeing how just about every field file is being changed in some way.

But with permission, authors could probably create a second patch that includes both their own work and the new backgrounds, no? Would you be cool with the idea once finished, sl1982? The releases would basically be like " 'SO and SO' patch merged with 'Team Avalanche's 2D Overhaul' ", providing immediate, obvious credit where due and alleviating any confusion.

Costa, what you've encountered is precisely the issue we've been discussing. NFITC1 laid out the steps that would be required to overcome the issue and as you can see, it's not pretty. Fortunately, it IS possible though.
