General Discussion / Re: Final Fantasy XIII-2
« on: 2011-01-13 22:30:58 »
I for one, loved XIII.

I don't really care for the lack of exploration.

I usually play jrpg's for their stories and having it on rails certainly allows a company to control its story very well.

And FFXIII's story was very good.  It's battle system too.  So I loved the game.

On the opposite, hated FFXII.  Too much sidequesting that ended up watering down the story.  And the fact that the story became crap as soon as we entered that king's tomb didn't help.

I admit it.  I've been on vacation since last august and I've hired trained monkeys to do the job of sending SPAM.  Not very efficient these monkeys.

I use OOo for our workstations at my workplace. I just set everything to output in Word03 format. Wouldn't that work for you?

That's actually what we did during our tests as nobody could open .odt.  Unfortunately, most of the issues I found with OOo stood with its export back to office feature as it introduced the issues I talked about prior.

To be fair, that's not only an OOo issue as even Word versions have some interoprability issues between themselves.  Word 97 actually faired worse than Writer at most documents ...

I also lol'ed at that toolbar!

im sorry to hear that, for me when i used Openoffice it was just fine. i used it at work in place of Ms office. opening mosty documents from word (idk XP version). Truth be told i tend to use the Koffice stuff more now anyway (kde testing mostly). also i don't need any of that for my job now.
EDIT: open document format is the international standard (ISO)for documents (NOT  microsofts formats.)Don't belive me?

I know .odt is the standard format.  But I can't very well start asking my customers to download and install software for my office.

And as far as opening documents, OOo was actually fairly competent.  It's in saving them back to .doc/.xls/.ppt that the issue comes from (and I'm not even discussing .docx/.xlsx/.pptx).

Most of the time, the formatting is lost (minor), data in forms is lost (major) and documents get corrupted when opened back with MS Word (blocker).

Next time we're looking at renewing our office licenses, I'll take a look at it again but that's years away.

I've always found MS Office to be more usable than Open Office (which isn't as open as it used to be now that Oracle are in charge)

Or rather, I've always found Office 2003 to be more usable. Word 2010 is an absolute f*ckfest; what the hell were MS thinking with that ribbon? Now I have to relearn everything.

I actually love the ribbons myself and I was a poweruser.  I did have to relearn the interface which took me a few weeks and I still stumble around every now and then but I think it was a crazy number like 7 out of 10 top requested features to Microsoft for Office were ALREADY in there!

The ribbon has made finding tasks much more logical in my mind for less tech savy user.  And that's the bulk of the users.  Our office had absolutely no trouble adapting.

Disagree there. OOWriter is a far better processor for long documents than Word. Word remains unstable for documents > 30 pages, and still provides somewhat limited style management features. OOW, on the other hand, has style inheritance, customizable ToCs, and true kerning support. The ability to apply macros to long documents without crashes is a tremendous boon, too.

That's really beside the point.

We can't send all our files out as pdf because some do need to be edited by the customers.  In itself, OOo was good software but its difficulties integrating with the standard 99% of the world uses is what makes it unsuable in a business setting.

I very happily use OOo on my home computer.

well that's just how it is with linux. it's mostly used outside of desktops.

yup i run linux on my server, router, cellphone, ps2,wii, ds. and my desktop (do laptops coun't as desktops if not i run it there too)

personally i perfer debian based distros and KDE , thats why im happly a kubuntu user i can get my newest kde crack and use all the deb packages  i need. that being said i run said i don't only run kde for a DE i have lxde on a few machines (and gnome on one, but thats only till i format and replace it w/ lxde)

unfortunately, linux isn't yet ready for business use.

However it's really no fault of the OS itself but OpenOffice is really no option in a business setting against MS Office.  Too many incompatibilities and workarounds for it to be workable on a daily basis.

If it were not for that fact, I would have rolled out linux to all our workstations at the office instead of ending our experiment and just keeping centos on our mailserver.

As far as firefox goes, I have to say I find IE has come a long way since the IE6 days.  I use firefox on linux machines and ie8 on windows machines.  they both work equally well for me and I don't really use addons anyway.

Dziugo also had much knowledge in this field from working on the ff7voice app.

If the demand for a new ff7music is strong enough, I'm sure he or others could be convinced to take a look at it ...

well what america stands for and what it has turned into are 2 different things. The f*cking liberals have raped this country and all the morals the founders stood for. I agree if you hate america now, but don't hate on americans, because most of them who matter don't meddle in politics, and ruin this country. And if that doesn't work for you, just remember who pulled your sorry asses out of genocide and war, both in the 1910s and the 1940s. Whaa we can't defeat the nazis ourselves, come bail us out. There you go, that's my opinion.

Actually, the English and Russians did much more to defeat the Nazi's than the Americans.

Americans mostly supplied ammo and supplies to the allies (essential) but didn't really get involved that much in the european front on a grand scale until the germans were already having issues.  the russians did much more to weaken germany than the US.

The US was mostly concerned with Japan as they were, after all, the ones who actually attacked them.  Still, the US's part was not negligeable on some battles (like Normandy) but I think the Nazi's would have lost still even without the direct military intervention of the US.  But it would have taken longer.

As for WW1, I don't believe the US got involved to any major extent.  I think Canada had more of an impact on that one being an English colony and all.  Of course, I don't know that much about WW1 apart from how it got started ...

Releases / Re: [WIP] Final Fantasy VII FMV Restoration

As I stated earlier, I'd be more than happy to supply the rendering power for this project.

Since you seem to not need my assitance for regular files, I'd be more than happy to provide the render for the alternate language versions as long as I get a clear set of instructions (and possibly the clean file without subtitles).

I would also state that Halo had a major impact on gaming :

1) Created a completely new console (without Halo, where would xbox be ?)
2) Revolutionnized console FPS to actually make them playable on consoles.  Anything before Halo on console is fairly painfull.

However that's not to say I agree with the whole list.  Super Mario Bros should have been there.  Tomb Raider could have been replaced by better adventure titles (Zelda comes to mind).  And FarmVille and Kinect adventures ?  Really ?

Dance Central would be a much better execution of Kinect based on early reviews.  And Guitar hero probably should have made the list.  Created a whole new genre.  Maybe even DDR to a lesser extent.

As for FarmVille, Wii Sports is already the epithome of casual gaming.  Why put another ?

If I can shed some light from my experiences with ff7voice, coordinating a large group of people to meet set deadlines is a difficult feat.  Doing it by scene could slow down the release of some finished content by years for that fact.  However, seeing a finished end result also is very motivating.  Although texture artists can be replaced mid-way where voice actors cannot.

I would suggest to finish the bombing mission to have an idea of the finished product but releasing work in packs.

Redoing the background might take years.  Why delay the rest of TA waiting for that part to be finished ?

Wow.

This is the first game I see where lyps are in sync.  Facial animations look awesome.

Plus I always like detective stories.

Definitely looking forward to this.

took me less than an hour to get 65000 bp. But I was on Disc 3 with Tifa equipped with a Ribbon and Minerva band.

The monsters are differet on disc 1.

When I last palyed in the Battle Arena on Disc 1 (ages ago), I seemed to notice BP accumulated much more slowly than on subsequent discs for some reason.

How exactly do you "have" 65,000 BP? You lose them when you leave the battle arena, meaning you'd have to either be playing on an emulator with savestates or have alt+tabbed your game to ask this question...

I'd alt-tab out and pray to god the game doesn't crash!

How many hours is 65000  BP on disk 1 ? 10 ?

Submerge it in rice and let it dry there for a week.

rice will sap all the humidity from the insides.

quite a few of my friends have done so with their phones to great success.

ps : obviously, dry rice.

I seem to recall being able to buy Omnislash in DIsk 1 but it was over twice the BP as in disc 2 onward.

Over 65000 BP were needed (I think it was 65 5XX or something).

Wow

The difference in quality is staggering.

I have a hexacore CPU which is not doing much ATM.  If you're interested, send me a PM and a detailed method on how to properly extract from PsxJ, use virtual dub to extract to PNG, apply the fractals and repackage the movie and I'll do that for the files you want me to do.

By detailed method I mostly mean which software version, which settings, etc to keep consistency and get the best possible results.

I'll let the vegas part up to you though as I don't have the software and don't plan to buy it.

Question (in case anyone who knows the answer is reading)

How long will it be before emulators are able to make use of more than two cores? I'm aware that pcsx2 can only make use of two ATM and that there are problems with multithreading emulators because sometimes one task will depend on another, but if we can take advantage of processors like the Gulftown, we'll have a major breakthrough.

Throwing my hat in the fold I'd say we're probably going to have to wait until emulators for this gen start to come out.

I'd suggest it would be much harder to emulate a single threaded system in a multi threaded emu because the base software (game) expects things in sequence so the software would be coded that way.

Multithreaded software however would be threaded from the get go.

Should be noted that this is just an assumption without knowledge here.

ff13 sucks because it is so damn linear that it is ridiculous. and it feels more like simplified ff12 battle system with ffx level up system. you can jump around when exploring areas, but only in select zones.

I don't really mind linear.  Or free roaming.  Either have their strong points.

JRPG's to me have always been more about watching an interactive visual novel than anything else.  In that regard FFXIII is stellar.

And the battle system is 10 times better than XII although so far (same point as original post) I sure wouldn't say it's hard.  A team with a commando and a sentinel with a medic/ravager beats pretty much anything I've seen so far ...   Rarely have to use anything else ... and I surely haven't died 30 times.

I would disagree that FF have been going downhill in quality.

While they don't have that "wow" factor they used to have, they're not the only rpg game in town as we've all played hundreds of games.  It's harder to impress people who've played RPG's for well over 10 years than newcomers to the genre.

FFX was pretty good even though Tidus sucked.  FFXII was a horrible mistake since the game could have been so awesome.  Only a few tweaks could have made it the best ever story-wise (no Vaan and Penelo, an ending that made sense, more political intrigue).  And XIII (not finished yet, nearing the end of disc 2 - or for the ps3 player i'm getting people out of prison) is pretty good so far even though the "on-rails" comment are somewhat justified but that's not very different from most games out there.  I do miss the world map though.  Made things look so much more ... grand.

I wouldn't say new FF's are bad game at all.

Looks as if I already did, and just forgot:

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=10450.msg146750#msg146750

This is somewhat off topic but I didn't wantmto necro.

Couldn't you just copy ff8's "follow-me" code and include it in ff7.exe and have it work with minimal changes or is that the most horrible suggestion ever ?

« on: 2010-10-21 22:25:51 »
Owned quite a few ATI card over the years (and a few NVIDIA too) and they both ran ff7 (and other games) very well.

I think Pyrozen is right, its probably time to ditch ath AGP mobo ... its been at least 5 years since anything decent was produced for it.

122
I don't know much about this but the game uses walkmeshes for prerendered backgrounds.

I don't recall ever seeing actual characther detection in the game but it's been a while so I might be off.

If you search on walkmesh on the forum or in the wiki, you should find more info.

How about showing shots of all untextured models to compare ?

It might give an easier time to texturers out there willing to look at this (and show us your strong suit to boot).

Of course the BBC is a left wing organisation which is completely crippled by Political Correctness.  Just because some people like to use it to peddle their agenda, does not make this any less real.

Make what real ?  Muslim extremists ?

The IRA was as bad as the Muslim extremists back in the day.  Or probably the Crusaders.  And most likely most of Africa's "revolutionary fighters".  Most cultures, Western or otherwise, have their extremists.  It's just a matter of how big does their voice resonate within the general population.

As to the documentary, was it biased ?  Most likely to an extent.  But almost everything I hear in North American media on "Al Qaeda" also is.  Take a little bit from both sides and you're probably not far off from the truth.

I reccommend you watch the documentary if you haven't Seifer.  It talks about American politics just as much as Middle East's politics.  I think you'd find it interesting.

125
Regarding most of the opinions in this thread, I'd reccomend everybody watches the BBC documentary The Power Of Nightmares.

Some parts are somewhat dry but it is by far one of the best take on the subject I've seen.

Here's a playlist where the first 6 videos were part 1 to 6 of the documentary :http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=5BF86B79B4D1425E&playnext=1&v=Vt-FyuuWlWQ

Very interesting parallel betwen US and Islamic fundamentalism and how some individuals use it to push their views, emcompassing 9/11.
