A casting call HAS been posted.

I haven't heard from the director that he's found the voice profile he wanted for Cloud so do send in your recordings as per the instructyions in the auditions thread.  Quickly.

Try to do a repair instal of your HD on the new computer.  It should replace motherboard drivers with the proper ones.  This is, with 95% certainty your issue.  I've never done such a repair under 7 but you should find guides on it online (or even better, suggestions on how to swap HDD from computer to computer under windows 7 - I know preffered way is from sysprep but since your own computer is broken ...).

This however has the chance to permanently screw up your install so backup your HD first (clonezilla image - free, open source, great software to image full HDD).  It's a fairly remote chance it'll screw your install but still there.

If it does work, you'll have to reactivate windows.  If your license was OEM, you're screwed however.

It is something that people would like to believe about Bin Laden.

But it's also exactly the kind of thing Bin Laden would do. He sent young men off to die and stayed in his mansion. He conducted his wars through dirty tactics rather than straight fighting. It's entirely believable that he would use human shields to defend himself. It would be apt for someone who was so cowardly in life to be a coward in death too.

I'd do the same.

Why go off to die yourself when you can have others do it for you ?  I'd rather be a general than a foot soldier.

Releases / Re: [WIP] New sound effects for FFVII
« on: 2011-05-01 18:08:21 »
Any reason why these have to be 4bit ...can't we go up to 8 or 16bit?

Yes you can.  Since I have no way of creating 4 bit files, I tested replacing a standard wav I had created in audcacity in cosmo (think it was 16 bit).

I can confirm it played in game.

As stated in another thread, I believe step 1 would be to identify all sounds as they have multiple uses.  The best way, I think, to accomplish this purpose would be to replace all 723 sound files in the game with spoken numbers and write down in what context they are used in-game by playing throughout the whole game.  I had started the process of recording and naming all 723 files with numbers to the  replce in-game but am currently stopped at 351 since its extremely boring and time consumming.

I had started previously an effort to indetify from memory the sound effect before it become apparent it wouldn't work out.  Here's whàat I had (incomplete and quite possibly inacurate) :

If you've sent an Audition, please send it again. Marc noted the wrong E-mail address. The E-mail is Aaron1984@Shaw.ca, not Shaw.com. Your auditions were not received.

Oops!

Edit :  I also realize I forgot to set a deadline.  Have your lines in by May 8th at 23:59 EST.  It is also recommended to record 3-4 takes per line.  Be mindfull of your recording quality.  Noises or a bad recording environment will reflect as badly upon your performance as a bad delivery.

FF7Voice / FF7 Voice Audition Thread
« on: 2011-04-30 16:46:20 »
Update : In order to have a more professionnal sounding mod, auditions have been moved to : http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/showthread.php?65840-Final-Fantasy-VII-FanDub-HD-**-CASTING-CALL-EPISODE-1-**.  Rules have also slightly been altered.  All are free to apply.

It's finally here, first part of the project!

WHAT IS FF7VOICE
FF7Voice is a patch to apply Voice-Overs in FF7. The patch works by intercepting the dialog calls of the game and playing the appropriate recorded line from the protected sound archive. The original concept of FF7Voice was suggested by FF7Heart and a proof of concept was put together by Ficedula and perfected by Dziugo.

THE SCRIPT
A full game script was produced for the game by Marc with the help of Tsetra, Revenile and Prince Lex.  Our recording will be based on that script and it contains every line by dialog ID and field location in the game as well as battle ID and movie name and timing.  DPLB also gave us the list of all of the world map text thanks to his retranslation project.  Recording will take place starting with major events of the game and working down from them in order of importance.

HOW WILL LINES BE RECORDED
A test will be held on the bombing mission to see if a group recording method is the best way to do things.  The bombing missions has a limited numbers of lines and characters so it should do for a good test under Mumble, a free group voice chat software that has good voice quality and allows for multicast recording.  Group recording comes with its own set of advantages/disadvantages, namely that all Voice Actors involved in a scene meet for a few hours all at the same time, and we want to test to see if it is a better way of doing things than recording individual lines on our own as is the norm.  Should this test fail, the recording process will be done in the standard way of recording lines each on our own with a set deadline and sending them in to the director for revisions/sound processing.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AUDITIONS
Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the line below as well as your contact info (name, e-mail, phone number) schedule and anything else you'd like to add.  If your schedule will change within the year, please state it and say how it will change as best as possible.  Deadline for initial round of auditions is May 13th at 23:59 PST so please hjave your files submitted by then.

WHO IS AVAILABLE FOR AUDITIONS?
We will be casting roles for scenes as they become needed.  Right now, the following roles are available :

Cloud
Age: 21
Hometown: Nibelheim
Weapon: Buster Sword
Height: 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m)
Blood Type: AB+

The main character of Final Fantasy VII. Originally a member of SOLDIER, he is now a mercenary who will take any job. After being hired by AVALANCHE, he gradually gets caught up in a massive struggle for the life of the planet. His enormous sword can cut almost anything in two.

Audition Lines :
“I don't care what your names are.  Once this job's over…I'm outta here.”
“I'm not here for a lecture.  Let's just do it.”
“Come on‚let's get outta here!”

Kid Cloud
Cloud's conflicted inner voice represented by Cloud as a 7 years old.  His role will become clear later in the game.

Auditions Line :
Watch out!  This isn't just a reactor!!

Barret
Age: 35
Hometown: Corel Village
Weapon: Gun-arm
Height: 6 ft 05 in 1/2 (1.97 m)

Head of the underground resistance movement, AVALANCHE. He's fighting the mega-conglomerate, Shinra, Inc. which has monopolized Mako energy, building special reactors to suck it out of the planet. Barret depends on brute strength and his "Gun-arm" to see him through. His wife died in an accident several years ago, and he now lives with his daughter Marlene.

Audition Lines :
“The hell you all doin'!?  I thought I told you never to move in a group!”
“Ex-SOLDIER‚huh?  I don't trust ya!”
“When we blow this place‚it ain't gonna   be nothin' more than a hunka junk.”

Jessie
Jessie, is a non-player character in Final Fantasy VII, and is a member of AVALANCHE, together with Barret, Biggs, Wedge, and Tifa. She is a very caring person, who tries to get to know Cloud, and keeps the other AVALANCHE members in line.

Audition Lines :
“SOLDIER? Aren't they the enemy?”
“Code deciphered”

Biggs
Biggs is a minor characters in Final Fantasy VII. He's a member of AVALANCHE under Barret Wallace. Biggs cares about the people around him. He is not a fighter and instead work in the technological areas of AVALANCHE's attacks.

Audition Lines :
“Wow! You used to be in SOLDIER, huh? …Not everyday ya find one in a group like AVALANCHE.”
“Code deciphered”

Wedge
Wedge is a minor characters in Final Fantasy VII. He's a member of AVALANCHE under Barret Wallace. Wedge cares about the people around him. Wedge, being the weakest-seeming of the group, looks up to Cloud. He is not a fighter and instead work in the technological areas of AVALANCHE's attacks.

Audition Line :
“Yeah.”

Computer Voice
Reactor's Automated Security System.

Audition Line :
"Ten minutes to detonation!"

Looking forward to hearing your work!

Unfortunately, it's not as plentiful as you'd think.
Most people start out thinking they'd love to tackle all of the lines. But once reality of the work required sets in, their enthusiasm sputters out.

So even if there are 2-3 people really gung-ho about recording all the lines, if everyone else fizzles out, the project still dies.
So cutting down the volume is probably the best way to go about it.
If the important lines all get recorded, and people want to keep going, I am sure that the project will continue, and complete everything. But recording the priority first, is prob the best way to handle it.

Bingo.  Listen to the voice of experience!

As stated above, the goal is still to get 100% completion, but given the high probability it won't happen, I believe its smarter to do it by order of priority.

As with the New sound effects for FFVII project I'm happy to lend a technical hand in any audio post production.

I have all the professional hardware and software. Even if the clips arent 100% clean I can do a certain amount of post editing before it becomes destructive to clean them up.

In an ideal scenario we'd be in a studio, all with pop shields and sound boards with mics properly eq'd

Your help is most welcomed.  It is a grand project in scope so we might assemble a team of editors if the workload becomes too heavy.  I'll send you a PM shortly.

I've found JRPG's to be too cliched story-wise this gen.  I still enjoy them, but not as much.  I have yet to play Lost Odyssey which I've been told is stellar though.  It's my next one.

I have found more enjoyment out of WRPG's lately but only the ones that are somewhat on rails as well (Mass Effect comes to mind).

I've always liked RPG's for their stories so I use the term RPG loosely here.  Japanese stories are more and more rehash of past titles.  WRPG's seem fresher to me.  Maybe its cultural differences.

87
I am interested in this project as well although I am a bit turned off by the initial premise of a partial recording.

Good luck with it!

The goal is to have a full recording.  But it's highly unprobable it'll ever happen given the scope of the project.  That's why, I believe, it's smart to focus on key parts first.

88
I would agree that most songs on ocr are in my "2 stars out of 5" category in WMP.

However, there are some real gems in there.  I've replaced most songs in the game with remixes from OCR/AC/piano version/orchestrated versions but some are much better stock then remixed.  I did edit about 15 or so of them to fit in game in audacity as one of my criterias is that it ressembles closely the original.  And I despise trance which OCR is rampant with.

89
I'm happy to report I've managed to touch base with Mesden last night and he's still in for the duration.

This will only improve the quality of the project as what he's done since then has been extremely well received and high quality.

As stated yesterday, auditions will begin in a few weeks.

90
Good timing as I've been working behind the scenes on a new concept for this project.

I think it's unrealistic to expect the voice actor playing Cloud to record over 1500 lines of text so this project would always end incomplete and in failure.  Once you accept that, the course of action becomes painfully clear : record the most important scenes of the game working our way from the most important ones down.  Even most professional games don't voice the whole game so why should we ?

So I've taken it upon myself to choose the most important scenes from the game, in order of importance.  What I'm planning to do is start from the most important scenes and go down from there as a group.  Once a VA quits, we release and the project is over so everyone in the team would be dependant on each other and I hope positive peer pressure would keep people from shirking their responsabilities.

I've also been tinkering with finding an alternate recording method rather than everybody recording their own lines by themselves as we did as I believe that was a huge turnoff to some.  I'm testing a few different softwares now that could accomplish a similar task to ventrillo but record the group output in good quality.  Mumble is coming out ahead of that search but I still have tests to do to make sure recording quality is adequate.  That way, I hope to avoid sounding "wooden" and forced if we record the whole scene as a group where everyone would "play" together the scene more naturally.  We do 4-5 succesful take as a group of each scene and I pick the best lines out of those samples to put in game and I or an auditor editor would do the audio post processing and cut, name them.

Mesden/Aaron will also not be involved this time as he's shown no interest in resuming.  If nobody qualified steps up to the role, I'm ready to fill it.  I wouldn't focus on technical delivery as much as he did and I know the game well enough to know what I want each character to sound like and which emotions should come through in what scenes so it's certainly within my capabilities.  I also don't expect this project to be anything but a nice complement to the game that some people would love and some others hate and I can live with that and it's going to be as professional sounding as we can manage as a group.  I also hope recording scenes as a group will give the lines a more natural flow.

Old cast members are welcome to re-apply but it doesn't mean you'll get the same roles you did if at all.  I'll contact some by e-mail I liked the sound and commitment of if you haven't replied here before audition starts

My priorities for casting would be : commitment, availability, voice type, mic equipment, experience and other factors; in that order.

I'll be posting an auditions thread once I'm ready to go.  Most likely in the first week of May.

Consensus : Scripting and Reverse Engineering ?

Archive / Re: What should Tech Related be renamed to?

I'm assuming no consensus was yet reached since the name stayed the same ?

As for comments about some names sounding uninviting, that's pretty much what I was going for.  Tech Related is like the library of the boards.  No messing around in there (messing with hot chicks between bookshelves is ok though)!

Troubleshooting / Re: request for info on sound fx
« on: 2011-03-28 22:05:14 »
I had started creating sound effects with numbers so I could inject them into the game and then identify where each effect is being used but I only got up to 300 or so in the naming process as its extremely time consuming (not to mention tedious) to record, cut and name 756 sound effects, inject them into the game using cosmo and then play throughout the game with no sound effects other than numbers.

Unless somebody could point me to an online repository of spoken numbers from 0 to 1000 I could download, this might take a while but I have some interest in identifying sound effects properly, add the list to file repository and then try and improve the sound effects using freesounds or the like.

95
Yeah that makes sense.

So this is what we are looking at?

1. General
2. Tech Related (with possible name change)
3. Projects
      -Mods
      -Tools
4. Troubleshooting

I'd agree with those descriptions.

As for Tech Related, I think Reverse Engeneering couldn't be clearer.  If that doesn't fly then I'd suggest (in order of preference) :
- Game Engine Investigations
- Inner Working
- Game Mechanics

96
well I will definitely try and find that website your talking about, but if its from the mid 90's I would think there is a very good chance it is no longer around. Thanks for the help Roxas I haven't looked at them yet but I am sure some of these will come in handy.

Perhaps I should have been clearer.  The site was designed in the mid-90's.

I used it last year.

Not that it matters now though (although the saves I'm talking about were vastly overleveled making mod testing ideal)!

97
There's a website which I forget the name that has all of the saves in the game.

You should google it and use that for testing.  It's a website of the geocities era (meaning mid-90's look) if I recall correctly.

it's what I used for putting together the game script.

I hope some enraged fans actually send a bomb to the dev office that does 13-2

Welcome to capitalism.  Vote with your dollars.  Don't buy the game.

Why exactly is this making you angry on a personal level ?  I really loved the first two Mass Effects but if the last turns out ton be EA mass produced garbage, I'll be disapointed but I won't get on a rooftop in Edmonton to start shooting Bioware's devs ...

I have a question to people who disliked FFXIII .

What past FF is your favorite ?  What did you like the best about it ?  What made it better than the others ?

Same question can be asked for people who did like FFXIII.

I'll start.

My favorite FF is probably FF4.  I really loved its story where a man doing evil against his better judgment turns around and reforms itself.  It also had lots of humorous touches (I played FF4 hardtype on a ROM so it most was likely a fan translation - it had the bit about Captain Kirk when confronting the king).

off topic, but speaking of squeenix... did anyone else hear they have the rights to the newest incarnation of the deus ex franchise

*cries*

previews look awesome....but so did the previews for deus ex 2 and 90% of the game turned out to be a snooze fest

actually eidos has the rights to deus ex since they were t5he original ip creators.

se bought them out a year or 2 ago.

It's actually being developped in Montreal and the previews look awesome but last time I saw a preview, it was all CG which is worrying.
