FF8 PC graphic problem
« on: 2012-09-17 01:20:39 »
I just finished installing FF8 on PC and it works otherwise smoothly, but... Graphic looks really garbled, and messy. Here's what I see currently and it repeats everywhere including "erases" part of the sprites too. Any help how to fix this?  :(

I had the same issue but never got a response. I must have messed something up when I tried to put the mods.

Problem is, I haven't put any mods, if you don't count the Samuel Slight's Final Fantasy VIII DLS Version 1.39 SGT pack with fixed FF8.DLS soundfont. I have nVidia Geforce GT 420 display adapter/card (factory default I think it's build-in one) with latest driver version (9.18.13.623 dated as Aug 30th 2012) and running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit with 3.10Ghz Dual Core processor and 4GB DDR3 ram and 3Tb total hard drive space...

You need the ff8 launcher (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=7248.0). It fixes the 8-bit palleted texture issue.

Hi Taniyatsu

As you can see, I have no such problem.

Have you called the FF8Config and set?

It looks as if the top layer of the background color of the "Transparent" is shown as black.
Maybe a driver issue, try an older times.
There may be a DirectX error, install the latest version.

Otherwise, here are two FF8 Launcher that you can try out.
Aalis driver I would try as a last resort, he's still a bit Faulty for FF8.

@lunch: I cannot download FF8 Launcher, when I'm going to RapidShare, it says "File not Found" with red background. Is there other way to download FF8 Launcher?

@Kompass63: Those are exactly same settings as I do, and directx is updated as far as I'm aware of it (DirectX 11 came as default to me with Windows 7 anyway)

Edit: Well I found FF8 Launced and fixed that problem BUT now I have new problem; FMV scenes doesn't show up and now game looks like this with FF8 Launcher:

Hi

So in FF7 I seen this before, but with FF8?   :o :o :o

Use the FF8 Config with admin rights.
Then test the game, once without and once with FF8 Launcher.

I would second try a registry cleaner (eg ccleaner).
Often times let passed, some of the entries are hidden behind others.

If that does not work, you can try the non Geforce patch..

I tried that and managed to run FF8 few times without problem with FF8 Launcher yesterday. However now there's another problem that persists; Right after Eidos Interactive logo disappears, I get this error message:

So since it asked me to give out APP.LOG with crash.dmp (http://www.mediafire.com/?6z8f7p7lfcf6hqi) -file, here's the APP.LOG

## USER OPTIONS ##
## If you just want to play the game, these are the only options you'll want to change.

# set the window size (or fullscreen resolution) of FF8
# 0 means use original resolution (whatever ff7.exe provides)
# preserve_aspect adds black borders as needed to preserve a 4:3 aspect ratio
window_size_x = 1280
window_size_y = 960
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = yes

# mod directory
# subdirectroy of mods/ where textures will be loaded from
# does not affect the old external textures feature, those should still go in textures/
mod_path = .\mods\avalanche

# check your driver settings if this option doesn't seem to work
enable_vsync = yes

# allow FF8 to use linear filtering for its textures
# some things look slightly better with this option on, but alot of textures just lose their detail
linear_filter = off

## ENHANCEMENTS ##
## All the little extras that weren't part of the original game, default options include only trivial bug fixes.

# post-processing shader, used to apply fullscreen effects
post_source = shaders/bloom2.post
enable_postprocessing = no

## ADVANCED OPTIONS ##
## Don't fiddle with these unless you know what you're doing.

# use shaders, if available and supported
# turn shaders off to use the OpenGL 1.1 backend
use_shaders = no

# prevent glitches due to rounding errors by rendering in the nearest (larger, if supported)
# multiple of the original resolution and up/down-scaling
prevent_rounding_errors = yes

# enable alpha blending for textures without an existing blending effect
fancy_transparency = off

# display frames per second counter in upper right corner
show_fps = no

# display some real-time debug information
show_stats = no

# store external textures in a compressed cache for increased performance
# compression is not lossless, some artifacts may appear when this option is in use
# texture cache does NOT update automatically if the source image changes, however, deleting anything from the cache
# will cause that file to be recreated from the source
compress_textures = no

# use pixel buffer objects to speed up texture loading
# will probably crash horribly on ATI cards but should work for NVIDIA users
use_pbo = no

## MODDER OPTIONS ##
## These options are mostly useful to modders and should not be enabled during normal play.

# show every failed attempt at loading a .png texture
show_missing_textures = no

# Disable Error Notifications
disable_popup = on

Can please someone make a guide on how to install ff8 properly with the mods for the best picture quality so as to avoid having these errors? I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the order we place the files. I also noticed that there's an nvidia profile in nvidia inspector 1.9.6.6. for ffviii. I'm not sure if any of it helps improving ff8's quality in any way. And someone please explain the differences between the different versions of launchers (1.3-1.4) and by just using the Aali's driver... First time I tried installing all this I got the same black blocks issue and i wasn't sure if the menu graphic mod was even installed . I tried to select installing all files with the program that imports them into ff8 and I wasn't sure if it installed all of them or it needed to install one by one...

Hi

My first hint is FF8 not to install inside "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)".
These folders are monitored by Win7 different than Win98.

My second tip is that "EAXUnified.exe" in patch 1.2 to run again.
In the German version seems to be redundant, but you never know...

Otherwise, I do not use a launcher and not Aalis drivers for FF8.

The different versions are in reality different programs that have (almost) nothing to do with each other.
One can use one or the other.
But there are at Launcher v1.4 possible to integrate a portion of launcher 1.3.
The "8-bit paletted texture fix" I had switched off, see here .
Whether Aalis driver works with the launchers together, I have not tried.
Since there are still issues with Aalis driver with FF8 I guess rather not do so.

@ Taniyatsu

Have you ever a folder "avalanche" in the folder "mods"?
If so should "mod_path = avalanche" sufficient. Otherwise "mod_path = none".

"use_shaders = no" is there a reason for this?

I've tried everything, including that avalance path, but for some reason the game just either cannot understand the mods on my side or it crashes.
Also before I had mods folder in, and use_shaders as "yes" it caused also my game to crash. so when I used "no" option, it didn't crash and now it does even I have that as "no"
