One of the things on TA's todo list is to have a nice classic style upgrade of the main cast, Thus far Millenia n I made a barret, though stylistically i'd like to alter it a bit. I'll be keeping progress here as the project advances.
Current work - Vincent!

Oh you sly devil you!
Looking great. It's him and Yuffie and everyones done right?
-
not really... xenobond is working on tifa, my aeris needs to pretty much be started over its so bad, we dont rightly have a cloud model for team avalanche. Barret could be revisited. Cid - not done, but he's on my list. Red13 needz texture, and will b a nightmare to import. Sephi is untouched so yea.... nearly done :P
-
thought you had cid done? And i forgot about Cloud and Sephiroth.
-
We could steal the Cloud model from the final Sephiroth battle for the time being, at least until a proper new model is made. Ripping from elsewhere in the same game isn't against the forum rules, right?
-
Importing Red XIII is less time consuming than you may think...
-
timu, is about barret model, are you accept any suggestion? this model only need his dog tag and his belt to be perfect. like in this image... :)
Only its my opinion
-
I want to make it more like the original design, rather than AC, so that'll entail a modification of the mesh to be a bit more... giant. I want to adjust the texture too, just not quite sure how.
-
Vincent looking great so far, I wonder how hard it will be to do his cape?
Also just out of curiosity, how many human battle models are there in the game?
I can think of Rufus, Palmer, Hojo, and the Turks off the top of my head.
-
I know I know but this is the original design, not AC style.
In AC he has a white jacket. by the way, good work with that vincent model :)

You know, Barret makes me wish I had a gun with infinite ammo grafted onto my arm....
-
One has to wonder...how does he ever put his glove on...?
-
One has to wonder...how does he ever put his glove on...?
Well, my guess is: either, he hasn't taken his gloves off since the day Dyne "died." Or Marlene puts them on for him. But it is a thing to ponder on. My question is still ho the hell he fires that damn thing? Is there like a trigger tied to on of his tendons? Cause wouldn't that hurt a bit? And I mean, the direct recoil into your nerve endings can't feel good either...
-
Nearly done, need to model the head, add the belts on his mantle and close the claw, then just do tweaks n stuff... not sure on polycount, havnt figured out how to get maya to output it... i found a poly count button, but its broken i think... does nothing :P

Damn, that is one nice looking model you have there timu, cant wait to see how it turns out finished.
-
a lil new thing but not really, i figured out how to smooth shade in maya :P
note.... cape is a serious case of wtf, not sure how its gonna work out in gmae :P
(http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/3884/picture240.png)
-
Looks good. Admittedly I don't know anything about the models, but isn't the cape of the one in-game cut similarly?
Do you have texture artists already lined up for all your models? If not I'd like to give one a try. Assuming you can UV map, since I can't.
Don't have anything recent to show what I can do, just this from a few years ago: Tauren Battlechief (http://darkken.homestead.com/files/pics/Battlechief.jpg)
I'm no millenia, of course.
-
Is that for a wc3 mod or a comp (i saw a bunch of wc comps awhile back n it seems familiar). Alas I wanted to give this model a go myself. HOWEVER, we have a /great/ shortage of texturers, so fear not, there is work for you!
As to the cape, my problem is i'm not sure how it'll go texturing it. It is layed out like it is ingame, so here's hoping... anyhow if ye want texture work add me on msn.
-
YAY, TIMU IS MAKING YET ANOTHER MODEL *jumps up and down with joy*
weither he wants to redo barret or not, the last one is great, so i have much faith in his modeling skill
-
Oh I noticed with the custom models that when you get status ailments like poison, the character doesn't go green, just the weapon does.
Anyone else notice this?
-
They do change, it's just very subtle.
-
At first I thought the same thing... Just look real close.
-
my guess is it's a texture that is applied to the 3d model. since our models are textured. it can't be applied right, But thats just a guess
-
Not sure about the poison thing on textured models, hopefully thers a way we can enhance it.
In other news, Vincent is nearing completion. Gotta do the top/back of the head, and a bit of work on the claw, then some optimization.
-
he gonna be that smooth in game? haha
-
he's gonna b textured. so focus on the silhouette, thers no shading in battle, unless aali makes another miracle (personal note, i dont think there should be shading in battle)
-
Why don't you want Shading in battle? just curious
-
Because we can't use normal maps :P that and the game just isnt set for it, the battle scenes are made for not having shading.
-
thats a fine looking head there timu, can't wait to try it out..
-
good job on vincent cant wait to see how it turns out.
-
vincents head is done finally! srry, hermoors lulz slowed me down.

-
the lawlz are indeed amusing, fantastic job on vincent :D
-
good job ;D
-
How long until we can see him in action?
-
well he sitll has two hair objects to be modeled, and then i need to uv him, that'll take a day or two, then however long it takes millenia to texture him.. i'd say maybe 3-4 weeks in total? :P
oh btw then we need to get him ingame, and that'll take a long time to get right, cuz his cape is stupidly animated.
-
Putting him in game is easy.
-
him, yes. aligning all the portions of his cloak, not as much.
-
There are tricks to doing it right. Trust me, putting him in-game isn't something to worry about.
-

Ok, how about we let you take care of that then xD
-
do tell me of these trick o.o
(though when its all done i'll probably just send it to you to do :P
-
Alrighty, so here's a start on Yuffie! Got her shoes n socks done so far.
-
Nicely done! good poly flow!
-
Those are some might pretty boots there.
-
You two are officially my heroes. I keep yuffie an vincent in my party at all times. ;D
-
Thankye! ^^ I'll be working lots on it tomorrow. ;)

Hey Chocobo_Girl :D
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1352739/ff7/yuffie_shoes.jpg)
A couple things to look at with Yuffie's shoes.
1) Her socks go up and then fold back down over the topline of her shoe. You can see the shape of her shoe under the sock.
2) Missing the shape on the side of the toebox.
3) The shoe is somewhat similar to Tifa's, just less bulky.

Looks like someone took a chainsaw to the legs of a yuffie mannequin... xD
-
modeled up vincents hair, not quit sure how it'll look animated, but best i could think up givein the bone structure (note, the original was two cylinders and a cone)
-
Whoa! Vinnie has a main now. ^_^ Looks nice. Though I'm still creeped out with the idea of hair having bones. o_o
-
Well that's the way animation works, hell, here's another example of hair having bones but with physics.

hey timu, if you ever revisit barret, will you also make a field model for it??

Field models would be a nice endeavor once all the battle models are finished... We've already got...what? two out of ten done? (ten including Sephiroth, whom I believe deserves a remodeling).

I will be and yes i will.

Hopefully, as we make them we'll release concurrent field models as well. (and yes, sephi is on the main cast list)
-
awesome job Timu, yes i'm posting at work. ;D
Is vincents cape really that many pieces? i never noticed haha.. How many models are done (excluding textures that is)? last i knew it was tifa (who is getting a rework), barret, cait sith, and red XIII, also cids lower jaw haha :p and aeris, but you said she is scraped for now
-
models:
Barret (textured)
Vincent
Cait sith
RedXIII
in the works:
Tifa
Yuffie
Cloud? (i have that head done, but i've learned much since and might scrap it too :P)
To be started:
Sephiroth
Aeris
Cid

Some more work in progress on Yuffie-Amputee. :D
(http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1893/yuffiebodywip.png) (http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/7383/yuffiebodywip2.png)

Wow that looks really good so far! If I were to nitpick, I'd say that the shorts should be more "ruffly", but that might be something that's better off being done in texturing.
-
The ruffles will be more obvious with textures, and moreso when the model is split up for the game.
-
thou beauty of thou models i warming to thy soul :P
-
WOW you rock Chocobo_Girl rock on :o :-D
same with you Timu Sumisu
-
I'm still convinced that timu and chocobo girl are the same person that take different forms as necessary.
-
hey timu, where can i find the link to your other models? did you finished the tifa and cait sith models? and even the red XIII?
-
I'm still convinced that timu and chocobo girl are the same person that take different forms as necessary.
If this was the case it would be quite the elaborate form of trickery as i have talked to both of them at the same time.

-
Personally, I think yuffie needs bigger boobies.
-
Yuffie has small ones in the original. thus she will have small ones after being remade,
So far, i think the model is pretty damn nice. I wish i could learn that fast haha. I practice hours every day and i STILL can't make head way on my scene :( cept this week, i haven't worked less then 12 hours a day all week (yay OT)
-
hey timu, where can i find the link to your other models? did you finished the tifa and cait sith models? and even the red XIII?
Although some of the models are done no textures, or uvs, so ye won't see em for some time :P
-
red's all uv'd and texture is starting to get blocked in-
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1352739/ff7/red_xiii_02.jpg)
-
i have a question about red are you going to get his weapons modeled so that they show up in game or are you going to leave it as is
-
That is a funny thing about Nanaki... he tends to not have a "weapon" so much in battle... if at all. I don't think I've ever seen him with any different models...
-
he sure looks funny when u swap his weapon too.
-
great to see ye started on red xenobond, srry i didnt rescale him yet, i'll do it after yer done texturing him.
As to red's weapons, we can in fact give him wepaons, we tested it out and although his weapon files are empty, when putting something in them, they work... however i dunno how were gonna show his combs... :P
that is, without it looking rather silly :P
-
hey timu, so xenobond's going to texture your models? that would be great. ;D
-
well he's texturing red, i dunno about vincent, millenia requested to do vincent. We'll see who gets it first!
-
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1352739/fior.jpg)
hot hot hot
-
dats HAWT xenobond! keep it up :D
EDIT:
Dug this out of the woodwork, uv'd and started to texture :P
(sorry, i know ye'd all like me to be workin on characters you /actually/ use...)

EDIT2:
and a back view...

Cait Sith! TRAITOR!!!! :P
Looking good Timu, Zipper on his back seems a tad blurry when it goes from metal to... uhhh... fuz?
Otherwise looks good
-
Hi for all!
I would help you .... But I do not know what tools / programs I need to edit the characters, weapons etc. ..... What programs do I need? So I help you learn and you.
-
to model, all you really need is blender, or another 3d ap, but blender is free. Check out the blender noob to pro wiki book to get yourself started learning the interface and shortcuts. For ff7, import a model exported frmo biturn, and use it as reference.
If you want to try texturing, the main program used is generally photoshop, gimp can be used as well, and its much like painting.
-
Wow. Even without the textures done, these models are looking really good.
-
moogles more or less done, it will be cleaned up more, but just so you guys get the idea.
-
OMG FAT ROBOT MOG FTWZ!
Haha, nice job, Timu!
Disregard if this is to-be-done, but I can't really see his underbite-fang-teeth-things (http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9004/caitsith.jpg) too well...
He could also use more....'furriness'
-
better?
i had changed the tone on everything, but forgot the teeth. as to the furriness... :3 dunno what to do fer that
-
I see, yeah that looks a lot better.
By 'furriness', I mean the zig-zagged whisker-like fur that you see in his ears and on his chest in the image I linked to. I think it should be possible to texture it on, but I guess it's one of those things that can be disregarded as "artistic license". ;)

Ok, thanks. But, what kind of files I have to open with biturn? There are various extensions .P(¿?), .Tex (jejeje this yes I know) .... etc. Help!! Jajaja
-
Wow, the cait sith is looking really nice.
On the topic of the first post... will you guys be making a field/battle cloud like you are with these characters in the original style as well?
I've yet to see one person attempt to make one with his classic original hair - all so far are AC style which is (IMO) sub-par to the classic style.
Red XIII is looking awesome as well!
-
I had started one some time back, might get to finishing it eventually.
-
In case Vincent's transformations are included as "Main Cast", I vote whoever models Hellmasker... to consider using some artistic license...

nice concept! I think it'd be cool for a compilation style mod, to go with AC costumes etc, given chaos and galian beast are based on vincents costume in DoC, these would be kool, but for the purposes of Team Avalanche, we're staying with the original concepts.
-
Someone should definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of Vincent's transformations had original concept art (for FFVII, at least). I think they were just made up on the spot, which accounts for the extreme lack of originality (Galian Beast = Mini Behemoth, Death Gigas = Frankenstein's Monster, Hellmasker = Jason Voorhees, Chaos = Dracula), and the complete overhaul of their design in later games.
-
I remember seeing Hellmasker concept before. Grabbed this from FFVII Ultimania Omega-
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1352739/ff7/vincent_concepts_01.jpg)
The models look pretty faithful to the concept made for them.
-
i quite like the original concepts, though i havnt seen original concepts for galian and death gigas. As to his limits being based on staple horror characters, i think it was a fairly solid concept, given vincent was an optional character, and fit in with the whole horror genre.

Nice find! I'll scour around to see if I can find similar concepts for Death Gigas and the original Galian Beast...although the DoC one (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/finalfantasy/images/archive/0/05/20080223064814!FFDoc_GalianBeast.jpg) wasn't *too* different...

I like this concept more actually. Love the fact he keeps his clothes (well at least a little bit) in this concept (and in the DeathGigas/GalianBeast from the same galery) just like he does when he transforms to Chaos in Dirge of Cerberus. Kinda find the Behemoth/frankenstein/jason/gargoyle dracula models a bit ridiculous too.
Anyway, since this project will most likely stick with the original concepts, we just have to hope that maybe someone in the future model them like square should have in the first place (Chaos like Dirge of Cerberus ftw).

Alright, well this is where I had gotten with Red a few weeks ago. Seems that while I was busy with life/other obligations, Max 8 took a crap dive, and I can't get assets into BodyPaint from Max 2010. -,-
So it's going to take me some time to get everything back to normal... assuming that it'll work that way.

I realize you still have some texturing to do, but just wanted to comment that as he is now, he seriously looks ripped out of a Kingdom Hearts game. That's awesome

Wow, very nice Xeno!
Also, I think the fire on his tail needs to be a bit bigger: http://www.rpgamer.com/games/ff/ff7/graphics/people/red13/redart.jpg
Hmm I wonder if it will look strange since its not animated.

going back on the topic of vincents limits, i just stumbled upon the concept art for his first two limits :P

nice! These are excellent for basing high res models on! So weird how death gigas appears to be wearing sneaks, and is that a codpiece?
-

It does. The model is already split for ingame use.

Hey guys, I have a request for this project....
Would you guys be willing to convert your battle models to field models and release them along with the chibi models? I respect keeping true to the original game with the chibi models, but I prefer the more realistically proportioned battle models (especially during dialogue "cutscenes" using the field models). I love the battle model-->field model mod in the remix patch, so if you guys could do the same thing I would be ecstatic (even if there is some clipping, LOL)!!!!
BTW I think it's awesome that there are still fans of this game this long after its release, and I have to give you guys some HUGE PROPS for making these efforts to mod the game! I wish I had the time and ability to help with the projects, but at least I can lend you guys the support of my praise of your work! :)
Keep up the good work guys!!! :)
-
Well timu is in charge of the cast, but in my opinion we should stay with chibi

Team avalanche will be releasing only chibi field models. If you want ot have mini- fullscale people running around a world sized for midgets, you can modify the battle models yourself, the info you need is available on the forum. If you plan on releasing it, make sure to contact us, and get proper approval and permission.... or else we'll send hellbringer after you:P
-
Wait, are you guys talking about field or world map? I agree completely with world map chibi but I think it looks quite out of proportion in the field when everything is sized realistically (except the head and body of characters).
-
Hey guys, I have a request for this project....

Actually, the animations and skeletons were created specifically for the chibi models. So to get the "proper proportion" models working properly on the field screens, we'd have to completely reanimate every animation.
-
Well the PRP isn't chibi (no huge heads) and the text cutscenes work flawlessly. I just don't like the originals because the field backgrounds are proportioned to real life and the original field models are not.
-
All the battle models will be correctly proportioned, so if you want an identical field model, just port it yourself. It takes 15 minutes max. 30 if it's your first time.
side note: I hate chibi models
-
I hate Chibi, but I feel that playing without it now would just be a far too substantial difference, in that I would notice it and compare it to memory constantly, from the start of the game to the end. That would be pretty immersion breaking.
-
So far, while using "not so chibi" models from Remix patch, the only time the animations got screwed was when Bugenhagen sucked the lifestream of a planet in Cosmo Canyon.
-
I'm not saying use ported battle models (though I like the concept I know the skeletons hate it). I'm just saying don't make the models look like this:

The animations don't really get "screwed", but i don't think this (http://screencast.com/t/MzUyNzllZj) is a very realistic stance for a person at all. In fact, I think the image as a whole just looks really quite ugly, but then that's my own opinion. But it carrys into motion as well. Characters still move and act like their bodies are proportioned like chibi models(Actually, we should stop saying chibi, the style actually used in FF7 is super deformed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_deformed), I think :P) and so because of that, The animations just really arent natural.
Since there are so many people who dislike the original SD/Chibi/Whateverthehellitis style, I wouldn't be against you all starting a small side project to correct the animations for use with the more realistically proportioned models. In fact, I'd love to see how that turns out - probably would be more of a PRP spin-off rather than a TA spin-off, though.
EDIT: On closer inspection, the example I gave (http://screencast.com/t/MzUyNzllZj) looks absolutely nothing like how cloud is supposed to look. (http://www.freewebs.com/legendnintendo/Cloud_strife.jpg) Isn't that the whole point of trying to get the realistically proportioned ported to the field? The body and crotch parts are way to big, and the leg parts are the wrong size and... yeah, you get my drift. In my humble opinion, It's definately a pointless endevour unless the animations and skeletons are changed.
EDIT2: Speaking of field animations, I wonder if it's theoretically possible to add new bones onto skeletons so that more detail can be given to animations...Then again, I wonder if it's not beyond the realms of imagination to somehow get mesh deformation into FF7, at least in battle - That could be very interesting

Would it be possible to port FF8 field animation system? I mean the field models from there are like the battle models.
-
I'm 99.9% certain it's not possible to take bits of one game and use them to replace bits of others. It would require the original source code of the game, and some very good programming knowledge to even be able to begin to understand how that'd work. (Talk to the QGears team about stuff like this)
Besides, I'm pretty sure FF8 field models actually don't use total mesh deformation anyway. In some parts of the game, it's more obvious that they've used model pieces than in other parts of the game - It's hard to tell really.
-
Discussion of this chibi business and its values can be continued elsewhere. This thread'd purpose is to follow the production of the main character models for Team Avalanche.

The issue here isn't the system. The FF7 system would work just fine for identically-proportioned models.
The issue is that either way, it would require all-new animations in order to get even remotely decent results.

Not only what Covarr said, but FFVIII's battle and field models are vastly different in terms of detail. They are far from, as one might believe, identical. They don't even contain the same number of bones in FFVIII.
There's really not much separating the FFVII and FFVIII engines technically. One could be used to remake the other with few workarounds.
I just felt I should point that out.
-
How are the cast models coming along? (primarily Vincent)
-
Afaik they are being done by appearing order, so next would be Tifa/Aeris.
-
Another vote here against the chibi models - having had FF7 on the ps since it came out the only graphical things I always hated were the chibis, especially in those awful chibi fmvs! you know the ones of cloud jumping on the train, his fall on the second bombing mission and, the worst of all as regards turning a tense situation into peals of laughter - Tifa running with Cloud in the wheelchair! HoweverI don't know if its possible to do anything about those fmvs, I imagine not?

There can be some things edited but isn't actually the same as Cloud jumping on the train but it will look like it. Tried it once but my video sucked I needed to ban it forever from my computer.

Whatever amount of votes we get against the chibi style characters, they're staying. you might be thinking that it's just a difference in taste - but it's really not.
Firstly, take a look at the main aims of Team Avalanche, if they're up anywhere. We're sticking the the original design, with artistic license, so that we preserve the original feel of the game.
Second of all, the animations and skeletons of the field models were created with the chibi models in mind. Putting 'properly' proportioned models in place of these therefore creates (imo) some quite ugly results.
Thirdly, a few people including myself have already begun (and in my case, almost finished) work on chibi styled models.
Of course, the FMV's that included that Chibi style models were rendered quite badly by square originally, and I agree that they look horrible. But thanks to the power of up-to-date software ,more powerful hardware and sketchup photomatch, it will be possible to recreate new and improved FMV's to the tune of the originals (with more detailed models and animation techniques) at some point in time.
Whether it will be done in our lifetimes or not is an entirely different story which depends on the interest and time of the artists and modders we have here.

It is the same as I have been saying. YOU GET A CHOICE to install it. ;D
-
Ah well, if you get a choice to skip the install of the chibi models then everything is fine! I respect the integrity of Team Avalanches project and was not suggesting you do anything else, if changing the main & NPC characters is optional, then of course anyone who wants can simply convert your excellent battle models to field if they want. Overall I think your work here is amazing and I do appreciate your aims, I'm not a fan of the advent children models around elsewhere but I am a huge fan your work here on the battle models.
-
Relax about the chibis. Once everything is done, it wouldn't take much effort to convert battle models over to field models, even if you just had to do it personally due to release issues. That's probably the easiest modeling task one can do with FF7.
-
what's happening on this project by the way?
-
It is on hold right now.
-
I take it after the bombing mission is done that's when these models are going to be set into motion, correct?
-
Nah, we'll keep working on segments of the game I believe
-
Hello again TA!
That Vincent model is going to look perfect once textured!
As for the Red XIII model.. I like it but I think the texture could be better. NO KINGDOM HEARTS STYLE!
K.H. IS LAME! :P You should have a darker orange that goes into a lighter orange like the concept art.
I would love to see the tribal markings on his face, the tattoos, the feathers retextured to the same color as the concept art and the markings on the each of the arm and leg bands. I did not see the other side of XIII's face to see if there was a scar but I would love to see that as well :P
Keep up the excellent work Team Avalance!

Edit - Regarding the chibi models I think you guys are making the right choice.
Because unless you are replacing every field model and almost every FMV with tall models it will look strange.
After trying out that remix patch.. it was really disappointing. It did not flow well with the game at all.
Though I do like the idea of replacing certain FMVs with high quality ones from either Crisis Core or Advent Children.

K vinnie is all nice n split, gonna try n figure out maya uvs soon.

Wow absolutely wicked work!
Are you done texturing Vincent or have you been focusing on something else?
Don't bump ancient topics just to say "cool". Also, try to avoid quoting images. Just a friendly caution - Bosola
-
Vincent is at the stage you see above. No UVs, no textures. I go to two schools, and have two jobs so I don't have all that much time for ff7 stuff of late.
-
Sucks :-(. Would be awesome to have Vincent (in fact all cast) done, since we hang around with them all the time.
-
Good things come to those who wait.
