What are you switching from?

Why BSD and not a GNU/Linux Distro?

Before you jump to BSD you might want to try another distro.  kubuntu 14.04 is what i use and recommend for most people. Linux mint is based on ubuntu it does have a few extras where problems could happen. If you install ubuntu server as a base system you can then install mate on top of it. (the package is mate-desktop) this could help you figure out your issue.

the distros that are not going to use systemd are very few.. gentoo and slackware are the main two. the rest are going to systemd. bsd would eventually also go to systemd if the GPL allowed it. in some time they will make their own shitter clone as they have done in the past with other GPLed stuff they can not use because of the freedoms they do not provide to their users. Good luck bsd can be a pita then again so can most oses.

"* For some reason (systemd) my OS now requires admin access to write to discs that aren't my home folder.  This only seems to apply to ext4 partitions, which is how I have my external HD partitioned."

that sounds like a premission issue check the settings on your external drive. or your /etc/fstab depending on how its mounted. if all else fails try chowning the mount point to your user.

"* This seems unrelated, but I don't think that all processes are visible in System Monitor.  Right now my OS is using about 900 megabytes of RAM, but the largest process is firefox, which takes up about 350 megabytes.  The other processes sum to about 90 megabytes, so I have no idea what is using about half of the memory being used."

http://www.linuxatemyram.com/  <- if you have used for a while you most likley know this already.  but based on your write issues you just holding ram as it attempts to write to the disk and fails over and over due to a possible permission issue

i have use a few distros with systemd and had no issues with any of them. their version maybe out of date or not fully baked. i have never used mate (long time kde user) so i can't speak on your mate process with the memory leak. i myself am a kubuntu user. It used to be debian with kde and all the testing packages kubuntu just makes staying on that bleading edge easer for me.

for a rolling release you might want to try siduction or tanglu (when its ready)..they do both use systemd

Good Luck with the OS change.

Just wanna throw my 2 cents in and say if you're gonna switch; switch to arch.  If for no other reason than the Arch Wiki is goddamn amazing.

You know, I've been thinking the same thing; I haven't encountered any of the issues people have been having with it.  My only issue is I don't know how to efficiently use it; but every time I've had to, it's been pretty straightforward.
