Which banks to set ff7.sf2?
« on: 2012-11-29 09:46:38 »
Hi all!

I'm enjoying the AWE midi's for FF7 as i'm posting this.
I'm playing them in XMplay with it's midi-plugin (Based on BassMidi, so it uses soundfonts) and i had set the soundfont that came with the game on bank 0 to 8, but the Victory Fanfare missed an instrument.

After setting ff7.sf2 on bank 1 to 9, it fixed the Fanfare, but Underneath the Rotting Pizza still misses an instrument.

Does any of you know which banks to set the soundfont on?

Thanks in advance :)

Very few people use the MIDIs of the PC version. Mostly everyone uses FF7Music.

Also I prefer the "midi" midi.lgp one.

I don't like FF7Music, because of all it's flaws (with delays and looping etc. ) :)
The Sound Canvas midi's indeed give higher quality, but a lot of custom instruments will be gone, since FF7 doesn't only use Sound Canvas samples.

Now every song, as far as i can tell, sounds like the Playstation version. Except for Underneath the Rotting Pizza! The bassline is just..missing.

Alternatively wait for DLPB to release his program that will make FF7Music obsolete (I'm really looking forward to it!).

dem midis aren't bad, but they don't sound exactly like the PSFs do. Also I'd suggest extracting the contents of awe.lgp (that's it, right?) and open them in Synthesia. Then you can look if anything's missing or if FF7 is just being silly (most likely).

I began making a mod that would replace the original MIDIs, but I abandoned it due to lack of interest from the people.

Someone made a own soundfont from FF7 SF2 and others he found but the last version combined it with the "One Winged Angel" choir font so I cant use it for normal MIDI playback.

I'm not releasing any program for FF7...  Aali has added support for FF7 already so I am waiting for him to release his latest driver :P  Anxious Heart will be modified for use with it.

I created a program for FF8 because Aali said he was not adding support ever.

If Aali hadn't added support I would already have finished :P

I must resist the urge to go all "Then do as if he didn't do it and make it yourself" but I know you've got better things to do :P

I am going to necro this topic, since i have found the solution to my problem.

Final Fantasy VII uses the AWE32 ROM samples for some instruments, so this is the correct setup:

bank 0 - 1mgm.sf2
bank 1 to 8 - ff7.sf2

Some tracks sound laughibly bad thanks to the ROM samples (Underneath the Rotting Pizza)

I am recently replaying Final Fantasy VII using EPSXE with an XBOX360 controller, so no problems here.

But seriously, this is how you necro a thread. It actually contributes something and may be helpful to others in the future.
