As for Honeywood, check NeoGAF, there is a thread there that has a link to an interview.  If you can't find it, I'll look for you.
Can you share it with me, please?

27
Wouldn't this somehow fit better?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid

As I see it, Meteo isn't a planet but a meteor or a large rock drifting through outer space... but not a comet either, so... either asteroid or planetoid maybe?
Well, there's always that old theory (that was confirmed in AC) of Jenova traveling through the universe on a planetoid to corrupt the planet's lifestreams, lol.

But I could be all wrong. If you go all literal it doesn't make sense, though.

PS: I saw you mentioned here Honeywood (Richard Honeywood?) on the バレット<->Bullet note. Where did that come from? I'd like to see myself.
As a side note, did you try finding scans of that japanese book I mentioned before? Does any of you know where to find scans of that? Because I don't.
But there's always the chance to buy it if you live in Japan I guess...

28
The Japanese don't have the same range of sounds as we do. Their closest sound has to use "su" for "th" among other things.  In English (which is where the name originates), the sound is "air-ith". The kana is an "air" sound, like with "aerial". Honeywood states that the name came from air + earth.  I am not so sure about that (the source we have from the writers is that it comes from an anagram of Earth alone), but certainly the kana sound is "air".
Let's see if I understand you right: you say that even if it's voiced EA in japanese, it really means to be AE? Ah, I didn't think of that "Air" example. That would be correct, lol.
Long ago I once thought it could be somehow a reference to Earth or a reference to Ea, though the latter would be kinda weird and it isn't correct.

Hmm... there's something weird about Heidegger's name...
Isn't Heidegger "ハイデッガー"? While FF7's "ハイデッカー" would be... Hydekar?, like the Estpolis (Lufia) II character, lol.
Is it another badly transcribed name by them or are both ways correct? Transcribed names are messy as always.

29
The OEF gives Aerith and the kana gives the "Air" sound, not "Ear".  The spelling of kana may come out as EA, but the sound does not.  "Aerial" in kana is the same, it starts EA. Also, the spelling was corrected from the original writers who were unhappy with Aeris, so there's a very good chance the spelling is now as intended.
Wasn't she called Earis(u) in (at least) Crisis Core's japanese voiced dialogues? I remember that. It's not voiced AE but EA.

30
if we find some evidence that makes "Bullet" as likely, I'll change to green again.
But the only thing that's going to change Barrett in the translation is word from the writers.
Well, to be clear, I was not suggesting actually changing his name, just to make some research on the matter I pointed to:
"His name is supposed to be Bullet and they explicitly changed it for the US release." coming from that official japanese material.
And I don't think the director, writer, or character designer are going to talk about it because there's no reason to do so unless someone foreign asks them.
Sometimes it just comes down to what is more likely and making an educated guess.
The policy on a conflict, where both have equal weight, is to stick with the original.  It's what I had to do with "Seto", even though "Seth / Set"  is as likely... or maybe even more so.
Well, actually I think Seto is OK, if you consider the theme around that race's names, examples: Seto, Nanaki, Dine... (yeah, not many possible examples, lol) but there's no way to know.
On the assumption that it isn't "Bullet", we've gone with Barrett - it's how the real-world name is usually spelt, and might be a reference to the firearms company, but I'm ok with any variation on that, I don't think it's very important, especially considering it's a PC name that can be changed by the player. Something like "Bullet" however would be a change worth looking into if there were more evidence to support it.
Actually that's a good assumption if you haven't seen what I mentioned, though.
Anyway, what if it was intended to be "Bullet" and then after the US release they scrapped that idea?
Well, I hope we can find a scan from that book to find what I was talking about.

Ultimania largely uses English canon names, even when blatantly incorrect (like Mideel).
Yeah, I think at that time (2005, IIRC) was when they began using the bad US release names.

Anyway, isn't Earith more "accurate", too, including that supposed reference to Earth?
Although earth is "アース" in japanese, so maybe it was English->Japanese->English as usual.
I can imagine what some people would say about this, considering their hate to Aerith instead of Aeris too... lol.

This "names origins" theme is actually interesting to me, aside of the use for translation/localization.

31
IIRC as far as it shows up in Japanese documentation (establishment file, ultimania etc.), yes. I suppose you could make the argument that it was consistently misspelled, but again I don't think it's very likely.
I see Barret's entry in here has been changed from green to blue...
I am in no way trying to troll you or say it's bad or completely bad, but I think some more research could be done according to what I posted before instead of just making assumptions,
and I think saying that his name has always been shown as Barrett is (probably) a lie since all japanese material refers to him as Barett from the game's instruction booklet to at least the latest material.
I've found where I saw it so long ago (sorry, I don't have access to it anymore):
ファイナルファンタジー7 解体真書 ザ・コンプリート [1997/11]
ファイナルファンタジーVII 解体真書 ザ・コンプリート [2000/7/31]

As you can see, it was made by the same people who made the Official Establishment File, but if I remember correctly it had way much more content than that, and was published a bit later in November instead of January 25th.
ファイナルファンタジーVII Official Establishment File [1997/1]

If someone can find some scans of that on Barret's profile and translate its texts, we could find what I was talking about.
I think it was nearly at the beginning, in one of the first pages. I've been searching for scans but haven't found any.

32
'Please form a political party of three'
Really? I don't remember that but it wouldn't surprise me, lol.

It's not impossible that it's Bullet, just highly unlikely as 99% of the time it's been spelt Barrett.

I think it was in a preview in a US magazine.
You mean Barret's name has been most of the time spelt Barrett?
I've almost always seen Barett from japanese material except that other comment, though.
And if you mean the kana is mostly used for Barrett... its kana can be seen as Bullet too, random examples: Bullet, Bullet-time

33
I've found where I saw it so long ago (sorry, I don't have access to it anymore):

ファイナルファンタジーVII Official Establishment File [1997/1]

As for the debug screens, they are in a very very sorry state.  Aerith is "Earith", for example.
Well, actually, IT IS "Earith", but I don't know if that was the intended name.
Maybe as a connection to "Earth"? But "Earth" is "アース", so... who knows?
I don't remember reading about it.

No but seriously.. in the French version, look at what kind of easter eggs we were greeted with....
Wow, I never saw that version. Is it like that all the time?
I guess the French version was the worst? So awful. Even worse than the Spanish one.
Terrifying! How could French people decipher it?!

34
I have seen this... and it was discounted because of the overwhelming use of the kana for Barrett...

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B7%E3%83%89%E3%83%BB%E3%83%90%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%83%88

There are also two other reasons:

1. The Official Establishment File shows Barett (one R)
2. There is a US firearms company called Barrett, and I am of the opinion that this is the origin.

Taken together, there is no real evidence of Bullet. It's more likely that Barrett is correct.
Well, now that I think about this, it is impossible (at least without context?) to differentiate Barrett from Barett or Bullet from the kana (from a japanese point of view), so that might explain why all could be somehow "correct".
But the second point you claim is just your opinion without much or any evidence either. Could somehow be considered personal bias (?).

*sigh* Wish I could find again the official material from where I found that info.

IIRC bullet appeared in a very early preview but it's been Barrett or similar every other time.
What do you mean? Was there actually a US preview of the game with Bullet? Now, IIRC, wasn't there actually something equal or similar inside the debug fields indeed?

35
Is Barret's name open to debate?
I ask because I remember reading somewhere in a japanese book (not sure if it was the Ultimania or some similar official material)
that his name is intended to be 'Bullet' from バレット, but was explicitly changed for the US release to Barret for some reason.

Indeed, I think that either 'Barret' nor 'Barrett' match the kana, but 'Bullet' or 'Barett' does.

Maybe, it could be interpeted as Barett "Bullet" Wallace.

PS: As a side note, Moguri is correct indeed, and was used too for the Spanish official translations since FF8.
I can understand American/English people confused by that, though. But is optional anyway.

36
Thirdly, and most importantly, question: how would I go about modding the PS1 remake of FF1?
You'd better try it with the 20th Anniversary Edition for the PSP, for a number of reasons, like:
I'm fairly positive it will be easier to port them there as AT3 encoded files than on the PSOne version, and that PSP version is the best one out there right now.

Now, I'll proceed to listen to your work.

37
DLPB, would you please answer my previous questions? I'm curious. ??? Everyone else can do it too! ;)

38
Here's how First Past The Post "works":

Con (36.9%) Seats: 331
Lab (30.4%) Seats: 232
Ukip (12.6%) Seats: 1
LD (7.9%) Seats: 8
SNP (4.7%) Seats: 56

Use your brain for half a second and work out why this is a pathetic sham we (UK) live in.
So, are you against the result or against the method?

What do you think the result should have been?
Would the result change if the method you preferred was used?

I'm not from the UK but, I'm curious about this.
Also, isn't there too many seats in total? If I were from the UK I would prefer reducing total seats.

Edit: I've got a mod for the PC version of FF7 called NT that aims for what you're describing. It's not 100% yet (had a faux pas with difficulty modes recently that I'm working on correcting), but feedback tends to be mostly positive: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=14938.0

For an FF6 re-balance, I recommend a mod called BNW. It's hosted on Insane Difficulty's forums but it's a great re-balance of the game with a lot of depth in character builds, equipment, and strategies: http://www.insanedifficulty.com/board/index.php?/files/file/66-final-fantasy-vi-brave-new-world/
Oh well, I'll have to try these the next time I play FF6/FF7.
Still I don't like the idea of rebalancing mods/hacks introducing other kinds of changes like new extra enemies, replaced character/enemy models/sprites, scripts, new sidequests, or even music.
Would be much better to modularize all these many different changes so the player can make choices. But that is too difficult, if not planned that way from the very beginning.

So that's not what "to hit the sweet spot" means to me. But it can still be something interesting or cool to play, I'll fastily admit.

Potentially, couldn't we solve all this with a clever little mod?

-Buff up the stat growth
-Heavily buff the weapon upgrades
-Generously limit the gains of junctioning (kind of like trading the weight with what weapons normally give)

I don't think that's really necessary, but feel free to do so. I think the game is OK as it is.
It's just our hardcore FF player minds most of the time leading us to these nasty things trying to exploit the system.

As I said before, I don't find the need to do 100 magic drawing from enemies all the time, or even ever, due to other factors in the game mechanics.
Did any of you really feel the need to do so on your first playthrough?

Just try to remember the first time you played this game without even a guide or internet access, if possible.
How did it feel like?

Well, that's my opinion though, so my POV might not work for some of you.

############################################################

There's bigger concerns with for example, FF7's lack of real practical use for some materias or spells in battle (like, Mistify and such), unbalanced easy battles, unused stuff, broken stuff...
I swear I can go through most battles just by leaving pressed the X/O/[ACCEPT] button. And this same happens too with FF6.

I would be more interested in a mod rebalancing things in FF7/FF6's battles and implementing interesting and practical AIs on enemies giving use for more skills or strategies in battle.
All that without unreasonably upping the game difficulty for non-experts or first-timers. This is a rule of thumb for me, even if I'm an expert I don't like too tedious battles either.

There should be a way "to hit the sweet spot" there.

I agree with you.
The first time I played this game so many years ago I didn't really bother with drawing magic up to 100 until near end-game and only with some very strong/useful magic.
The only thing I missed of the game on that first time was to get all cards collection, but on a second playthrough I managed to do so with the Piggyback official guide.

Now recently some time ago, I began a new playthrough and got obsessed with drawing all possible magic at the earliest possible moments in the game.
It is very tiresome, and really unnecesary. That, mixed with other real-life factors forced me to abandon that playthrough.

Anyway, I wouldn't say the Draw command is unnecesary, since it's useful too to get GFs (summons), and early in the game is near mandatory to get some nice magic.
The real issue with the magic/draw system comes later, when you feel it's a waste to use magic and instead go all the time with a near-death Squall slaying enemies with ease.

Near-death Squall with limits is unstoppable most of the time. That could be seen as a flaw in the system too, maybe.

As far as I'm concerned AC never happened and is not canon. It's a fanservice fanfic. Turn your brain off and it's cool to look at. That's all it got imo.
Thats pretty much what I say whenever people bring up AC references or use it as a source on a ffvii discussion. For me that goes for the whole compilation, though. Genesis and all this nonsense wasnt there either.

https://allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/They_Changed_It,_Now_It_Sucks
https://allthetropes.orain.org/w/index.php?title=Ruined_FOREVER_%28Darth_Wiki%29&redirect=no
https://allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/Fanon_Discontinuity
https://allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/Fanon

So anyone feels entitled enough as to say what's the canon or isn't, now? I hate when people think themselves as the owner of a story or series. They sometimes refer to hypothetical inconsistencies, most of the time false.
It's like what's happening now with Dragon Ball getting new content from the original author, Akira Toriyama, and people hating it without even having watched it, sometimes even saying they'd prefer more GT from Toei Animation or that it should have ended after the Freezer Saga on Namek. Similar to Star Wars with the Expanded Universe getting erased and new films being made. lol

This kind of fans are never happy. Never. They are usually the worst kind of fan an author has to deal with.

43
This is an idea I've had the past recent years, but lately given more thought.
As an outcome from this other topic...

When did the "Videogaming Fall" begin for Konami? It seems the same it happened to other Japanese videogame companies.
They somehow needed to expand themselves on to other markets to survive the future (now) Japanese videogaming crisis.
Reminds me too of the arcade games crisis on Japan everywhere.

Japanese game companies (most except Nintendo and 1 or 2 more) have reduced so much the quantity and quality of the content they try to sell... :-\

The talent, time, and money costs needed to make games now is so extremely huge...
I never saw it coming at the time, so nowadays it makes me both sad & angry.
Not only that, but western companies are probably beginning to face it too, and surely will 5 years from now...

Did any of you see it coming 10/15 years ago?
Do any of you feel the same way about this?

What's more, do you think it is possible a new Videogame Crash happens?
http://tay.kotaku.com/are-we-on-the-cusp-of-another-video-game-industry-crash-1635286847

You think it is possible? Can this mix of ingredients destroy the trust and make a new bomb?
  • Rise of costs (talent, time, money).
  • Rise of price on each new generation of consoles.
  • Relaxation on the indie game barriers (specially through platforms like Steam and PSN).
  • Short yet expensive inflated price games.
  • Bugs everywhere. Everywhere.
  • Abusive DLCs, instead of reasonable expansions.
  • Smaller quantity and lower quality of games every new generation.
  • Mobile/Tablet/Smartphone games exploiting much of the above points and getting more focus from companies than dedicated gaming handhelds.
At least Nintendo still avoids most of those points. They could end up being clever once again in the end?

What's more...
...Would it be bad or good, to have a new crash, in the long term?

44
More likely they're going to try and lean on their slot machine business and just forget video games altogether. As it is, that's already where their big money is anymore.
Relevant: Konami is delisting itself from NYSE. Seems like the company is self-destructing.

I wonder if financial issues have been at the root of all of this. I'd not be surprised to see them sell off some of their IPs at this point.
Erm... okay, so they are not making such "big money", after all. :P Heck, if I had the money I'd be willing to buy the Suikoden IP so to at least make an HD cell-shaded remake package of 1, 2, and 3.

This image should be updated with a line saying "F**k us too":

45
Now, it is confirmed, Konami is "D.E.A.D." ...
Now you can continue the drama brought up in this topic.

Will they bring up other old IPs, to then cancel such hyped up projects?
(please Konami, don't do this with Gensou Suikoden or Akumajou Dracula >:(, though Suikoden staff and Castlevania's Koji Igarashi are out...)
or... Will they create new IPs, pay the media to create hype, and then releasing some s***t and run away with the money?
or... Will they continue milking MGS, except this time without Hideo Kojima?
or... Will they try continue milking the outdated (since PS2) soccer PES game series every year?
(instead of upgrading the game/graphical engine and releasing a Master Version updateable through small/reasonable price DLC for new soccer seasons or free middle season updates)
or... Will they end up as Sega, or be bought by Square Enix Holdings?

Please, place your bets right here.

I think they will try all I've written above.

Just some details:

Was it really mentioned ever in the game about Rufus being dead? Just some obscure FMV was shown.
Reminds me a little of the case of Tseng. Everyone thought he was dead too, for no reason.

Didn't Ifalna explain to Dr. Gast Faremis about the disease that Jenova spread among the ancients turning them into monsters?
Maybe the geostigma was inspired by that as it's suposed to be the alien lifestream of Jenova melted with the Planet's lifestream.

Anyway, I don't think AC was ever meant for non FF7 fans, or FF fans in general. I myself don't consider it a movie or film, more like an OVA, maybe.
The Spirits Within was a good movie, but you know how it ended: forcing Sakaguchi to leave the company.

Yeah no problem, it's much better than nothing anyway.
I hope Ulpian returns with more fields work done or something...

Is there some place where one could find people to work on CG fields for FF7? ???
We should tell those about this hobby project, maybe?
I'd like this to grow... or else an official remake could be made and released meanwhile (lol).

Oh and sorry for my too much off-topic here by the way.

Nice, they all look great now.
Well, all except "mds6_1", as it somehow still has something wrong... Is it excess of dirt?
If you look closely it's like there's too much dirt saturation on some places.
But at least it doesn't look compressed and blocky/tiled now.

Still not as clear and crispy as the rest... :| Is it really yours that field? :-P EDIT: Whoops! Clearly not, sorry.
