WIP / Re: Final Fantasy VIII - Graphical Update Mod (WIP)
« on: 2019-06-11 10:28:31 »
Thankyou, I'm glad you like it, I certainly spent a lot of time on this last I was working on it. You're right about the character's though, I'm also really not happy with what happens with them. The issue is obvious, my GAN was trained to rebuild backgrounds, not characters. I'd have to make a new GAN just for the characters to get reasonable results, which would take time. Then there would be the issue of merging a background produced image with the character produced image (which would likely have to be done by hand). Personally, I just think getting an artist to rebuild the characters if not even the backgrounds as well would just be a much better method. But this GAN stuff is pretty neat, not gonna lie. It definitely kept me really interested for a while. If someone had the time and knew more about the specifics on do's/don'ts for training GAN's however, I think you could produce whatever you wanted reasonably well, there's just so much potential, and we've only just scratched the surface on this neural networking stuff I think, although it's definitely getting more and more common in ways most people don't even realize yet, which is also kind of scary.

Actually, what I was referring to about the faces, was the HD character models. They may be higher resolution, but their faces are quite different in style, and I was saying I kinda prefer the original model style. Like, the eyes in particular if I recall correctly looked off to me. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the 2D poorly drawn prerendered background characters. I'm sure you're right, it would be better if someone will skill redrew them. But that might not happen anytime soon. I've been away from Qhimm for a few months again, so I'm replying a bit late, so sorry about that.

.NSP is the format the e-shop games are compressed into for installation onto the Switch

Oh okay. Thanks for the info.

Oh okay. Well, I don't have an SD card to use at the moment, or a card reader yet. I'm probably going to get one later in the month because I need a card reader for SD2Vita. So I'm probably going to buy 2 SD cards, one for my Vita and a second one for my Switch. But my Switch isn't hacked anyway so wouldn't this not work on it anyway?

Wow, your work is really impressive! I played FF8 for the first time all the way through last year, but backgrounds back then were MUCH less impressive. The AI stuff we've seen since the start of 2019 for FF7 and FF8 is incredible! I really hope you don't abandon the project! Cause I'd LOVE to play the game again if you do release a complete version.

One of the things I remember having an issue with for FF8 was the character models (the HD ones you used in your tests) don't quite look right to me. Their faces are pretty different and I often remember feeling like the original character designs were superior when it came to their eyes and faces.

I'd have to see a proper comparison again to see if it's what I remember. If I had any skill with modding things myself I'd LOVE to have an updated HD character set that was a bit more realistic looking with their faces. Honestly, reading through this whole thing took around an hour. And in the last few pages I kinda just started skimming because I wanted to get it finished sooner to get to the end and see if you had finished it or not. That and a LOT of the technical aspects just completely flew right over my head.

I mean, I don't even know what a GAN is xD. I'm assuming it has something to do with AI Neural Networking. But I don't know what. I hope you continue this project because it's honestly amazing what you've accomplished! And in such a short time. It reminds me of this guy Jmp who a few years ago tried to make 3D models for FF7, I read through that thread last night before bed too. The difference is your method is already pretty close to being completed, whereas his method no matter how fast the man was working had only completed like a dozen fields in months.

I think it's safe to say AI Neural Networking is a MUCH more practical solution at this point because it's so automated (compared to just straight up manual work) and allows you to do THOUSANDS of backgrounds in mere hours or days, something which is probably utterly impossible if you'd have done them by hand. I realize it's not perfect, and probably will never look as good as if someone just literally redrew ALL of the backgrounds manually again, but it's a pretty amazing result nonetheless! You should be VERY proud of what you've accomplished! :)

Alright, well I suppose I could try one more time later today. I've got a backup of the vanilla files on my desktop to use if I mess up something and for testing out things. So I suppose I can make a new installation of it again and see if it looks different with and without the menu changes in R05. But am I correct in my assumption that the changes are pretty minor compared to R03?

I'm assuming that you are the same person who did R03? What I'm confused about is, if that's the case, how come you seem to have had such a fundamental shift in design philosophy? I mean, the GUI is definitely not very faithful in the R03 version to the original design. (Though I personally feel it's less obstructive and easier on the eyes overall.) Part of the issue I've had is with R05 the font seems much larger and less properly spaced when I've used it. Would it be alright if I post some screenshots of the GUI of both and you can tell me if it looks the way it should on R05c?

Cause I just want to make sure I'm not messing up something in the installation process and that it's just the way you intended it to look. I've also had issues where if I disable R03e inside 7th Heaven it tends to mess up the GUI completely, and I'm not sure why that is. Like, it causes all the text to be too large and seems like it won't disable completely so traces of it are still there on the screen. Like in the battle screen, the section where the HP/MP is gets all messed up.

I don't know if this is a known issue or not or something in my mods are conflicting or what. I do believe that when I first install the Reunion R03e it does give a warning in 7th Heaven that it makes changes to the ff7.exe file. And I'm fairly certain the animations mod also does too, and I think disabling it has caused it to stop with working properly for me before once. Another thing I've noticed with all the mods on 7th Heaven installed is longer loading screens when I first load up the save file and possibly longer in general load times.

I don't know if a mod I'm using is causing it or not. I think perhaps the direct and music folder extra file bug might be causing it to slow down, though I'm not sure if that's a known issue or not. I suspect you probably wouldn't know about it since I don't think you work on the tool and it seems perhaps you're not very fond of it? I've tried to figure out what this bug is and if there's a way to fix it.

Like, is it just in 7th Heaven 1.56. or is it a longer running bug? Should I be using some older version of the program before the bug was introduced? Another weird thing I've noticed is 7th Heaven claims there's a 1.57 update yet fails to download it and I can't find it linked on the tutorial page either. Is there actually a 1.57 version or is it just another weird bug in the current version? If you don't know the answers to these questions, do you happen to know who would? Thanks for any help you can provide. And sorry if I'm getting a bit off topic for this thread. I'm just not quite sure where to ask these questions and who can help answer them.

My Switch isn't modded, and I'm not very comfortable modding a brand new console I just got like 2 weeks ago. I did hack my Vita I got at around the same time, but only because it's an old system and wasn't brand new, and I'm far less likely to get banned for hacking it than on the Switch is far more likely to get banned for hacking. The other problem is I don't currently have an SD card in my Switch yet. I'm using the internal storage and when I plugged in my Switch with a phone charger USB-C charger yesterday into my computer it didn't come up with showing any storage device. So I couldn't look at the file structure. If I did put in an SD card and plug it into my computer, would that make it show up as a proper storage device? The only SD card I have currently is a 32GB card in my phone and I don't really want to use it in my Switch cause my phone has lots of stuff on it and I don't know if I used it if I could ever get it to work on my phone again or not. I also don't even know how to hack a Switch right now as I've never looked up a tutorial so far. I was actually kind of nervous about using my phone's USB-C charger because I've heard the Switch is picky about what kind of USB-C charges it. Thankfully it didn't seem to hurt it at all.

It's been ages since I looked at this thread... I'm sorry to say, I completely forgot about it. (My memory isn't what it used to be these days...) But wow, your work was/is amazing! I'm sorry I haven't posted in so long, but I am still interested in a project like this! If you're able to at any point, and haven't completely lost interest by now, I'd love for you to continue working on it sometime! If not, well, the work you did is still spectacular! :)

How is any of that possible? The Switch doesn't even come with a cable to plug into the computer? Do you need to use an SD card in a card reader or something to get to the files? And does a Switch have to be modded to do any of this?

Oh okay. Is there a reason why the menu looks different in R03e than on R05c? I really like the menu better in R03e. When I installed R05c, even with that being the ONLY mod installed it STILL looked like it wasn't even changing the menu like, AT ALL. The text often looked larger than it should be, and the battle UI doesn't even seem to be altered at all. It's just stock UI which I find too big and obstructing. The 60fps actually DID work though.

I mean, not completely, it wasn't 60fps outside of battle without doubling the framerate which caused battle framerate to be 120fps instead of 60. But I REALLY do like the fact that you can change the speed of the game like that. It would be VERY useful to me since I find the speed of the game to be too slow right now and I'd like to at least increase it to 2 or 3 times.

That's THE ONLY thing the PS4/Switch ports have I really like, and really wish was available on the Steam version. The one thing I had tried was removing the ff7_en.exe from the game folder temporarily like I had read in a different thread about getting The Reunion to work with 7heaven. But it didn't work because it patched ff7_mo.exe (I think not 100 percent sure if that's the right one) which is a problem because to use R03e I need to run the ff7_bc.exe because I use the Reunion and Beacause together.

But if I remove ff7_mo.exe to try and get it to patch on ff7_bc.exe it just says I need ff7_mo.exe. Which means it can't be done properly the way I wanted it to be done. The best workaround I've found so far is using the 60fps option in the animation mod in 7th Heaven. It does give 60fps in battle, sadly though it's JUST in battle, it doesn't fix the rest of the framerate issues. And it of course also lacks the speedup stuff that I like from The Reunion R05c. Do you have any ETA on when the Reunion R06 is likely to come out? Also, what exactly does R0 mean? I'm sort of curious xD

Edit:

Sorry to post again, just wanted to make clear the caps I used in this post are not meant to be seen as aggressive. I meant to use them for emphasis. I probably should have used bold or italics, I'm just used to comments like on YouTube where these features are not available so I didn't even think about that. (I also hadn't read the rules until after posting so I didn't realize it's ill-advised. I suppose I could edit the comment instead or making a second comment, so if that's more preferable I'll do that instead. I'm pretty inexperienced on the forums. I've been on the forums for years, but haven't actually posted much before so I'm not super familiar with how things work. So hopefully I won't get into trouble.

Please remember that you can modify your messages, and please don't double post. ~strife98

I'm interested in this solution, but I'm a bit unsure of what you mean by patch R03e and then copy the Reunion folder. What folder is that? For that matter, I'm not even sure what you mean when you say patch. And what mod folder specifically am I supposed to put the copy into? I realize this is an old post and for some reason no one else replied, so I'm not super hopeful to get a reply, but I'm REALLY struggling to find an easy to follow tutorial for how to use R03e (preferably with the Beacause translation with it) I've tried using the newer R05c Reunion mod, but it always seems to look ugly to me. (No offence to DLPB. It's just that for some reason when I try using it seems like it's not even changing the menu or interface much if at all. Whereas R03e seems to look VERY nice and I really prefer the look of it.) I really wish there was some simple way to use R03e with the 60fps and speedup aspect of R05c. Because for me that would be ideal. I can't even seem to get R05c to work with 7th Heaven which is where most of the mods I'm using are installed from and run from. I'm also kind of unsure why 7th Heaven continues to use R03e instead of the newer version? Does EQ2Alyza just prefer the look of the menu in R03e too or something? I apologize if it's against the rules to revive an old thread instead of starting a new one.

Your work is incredible jmp. I've been checking in on mods for Final Fantasy VII and VIII every now and then to see if there's been some improvements or major developments. I hadn't seen your stuff sadly before now, despite being on the forum most likely at the time you started it. Your work ethic is astounding, and the speed at which you can make a field is amazing. I'm not a modder and don't really have any skills, but even I can tell your work is great.

Out of all the other stuff I've seen on here yours is the most impressive. I like that you stay so true to the original whilst completely remodeling, retexturing, and relighting the field. I've always been pretty turned off by top-down perspective type games because you can't see the action or the detail like you can when you look at it from down on the ground, as well as the fact that they generally have low-quality resolutions given they're not used anymore by many games. But you have shown me that you CAN make Final Fantasy VII look beautiful and still keep its original style. One of the things I found I hated most about FFVII and FVIII was the pre-rendered animations for things like smoke and water were very slow feeling and not smooth.

They felt very dated to my modern sensibilities. I didn't even realize it was possible to do so much with a game so old and dated given pre-rendered backgrounds, in general, are no longer used by games these days and Final Fantasy abandoned them after FFIX (though after just looking that games BG art up I guess I was mistaken about how beautiful they can look). I don't know if you've just given up on this or not but if you haven't I just wanted to give you some encouragement!

Hey. I've been trying to download the movie options mod for a couple of days but it keeps failing. I even just bought a subscription to mega hoping it would solve the issue for me. But it still doesn't work so far. It seems like I have to wait at least 24 hours between downloading anything now. I finally got the music properly downloaded earlier but now I can't get the movies yet. I don't know why and if there's anything I can do but wait.

New error code that I'm getting now. This crashes when I try to activate my mods. I'm not sure if my file systems are right as I found it hard to follow the tutorial.  I took a screenshot of my desktop so I can show my file system to see if I did something wrong. But I'm not sure how to upload an image to my post.
