Are you using Windows 8?  There are still some issues when installing with Windows 8.

Also make sure that the file .\data\field\flevel.lgp is present.
Sometimes when running the new to old conversion multiple times deletes this file.

Located that file also and OS is Win7.

jansente,
Are you running some type of virus/malware software?
Something blocked the new sound effects patch and resulted in those missing files.
If you can't disable the protection software or add an exception for the Bootleg files, then try installing without the new sound effects.

Scitu,
Are you using the Chrome browser?
Close everything before opening FF7Config.exe.

Just made clean install and didn't touch Chrome browser. My APP file is still blank and same problem exists ---> FF7 config.exe crashes at startup.

To all who have problems with the FF7Config.exe

Please try the following test
1) Rename the FF7Config.exe to e.g. "FF7Config+. exe"
2) Download the patch 1.02
3) Extract out of the patch the "FF7Config.exe" into your game directory (only this one!)
4) Run the (original) "FF7Config.exe"

Caution:
If that work Aalis custom driver will be disabled!
You can not play the game without custom driver!

In order for the custom driver is working again you have to change with "regedit" one (or two) key(s).

For Win 7 64Bit run "regedit" and navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Graphics

"Driver"=dword:00000003.
.
.
"DriverPath"="ff7_opengl.fgd"

For Win 7 32Bit you (maybe) have to navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Graphics

Pease report if the (original) "FF7Config.exe" will run or not.

Edit:
@Scitu

Your app.log is maybe inside "ficedula" or "ff7Music"-folder

Well ...
It looks like I didn't execute the converter properly. I re-installed everything from the beginning and there was a large section of the sound plugin install that had been missed initially (error popped up and I assumed it was part of the "ignore error reports" section). Sadly, this still hasn't resolved my problem ...

Anti-virus, firewall were disabled with no affect.

any other suggestions?

Can you use the original FF7config.exe?

Config runs. When I try to launch the game using the 1.02 config.exe the game crashes with the following app.log entry.
For the record, I can run the game with the base 2012 install.

There is a bug in Bootleg .0039 that deletes condor.lgp when the condor enhancement option is disabled.
Replace the condor.lgp file with a vanilla version.
This bug is fixed  for the upcoming .040 release.

Another bug in .0039 sometimes prevents the sound driver from configuring correctly.
Set the sound driver with FF7Config.exe.

Hadn't, but that didn't resolve the problem either. Interesting to note though, I'm running 64 bit windows 7 and the files were found in the Local_machine registry directory.

Have you searched the whole registry?
There are two key sets...at least in the 1998 release

I don't have a second set of keys. I dumped the registry to a txt file to look.

I suspect that Kranmers new to old patch gives the second set of keys no observance.
It may be that some reason is not working properly.

How brave are you?
Do you dare to add my set HKEY_CURRENT_USER with you and to test if Aali's FF7Config.exe will work now?

After a few more tweaks, I think it's all working now. Adding the second set off config files and putting the condor.lpg file back in its rightful place have done something. I can now launch exe without an immediate crash.

I was still having issues with the window/full screen thing, but I disabled a few of the compatibility options from the FF7.exe and changed resolution once the game started.

I suppose I'll be back shortly with an update.

Thanks for all the help.

Please use Aali's FF7config also for sound and MIDI.
Then please post your two key sets in here.
Me (and perhaps some others) would be interested in the differences.

Good luck, I'm going to bed ;D

Got through the train cut scene after blowing up the first reactor, so it looks like everything is working well for me.
I copied the values from the keys in the "other" location, so I believe they should match.
Also, disabled the run in 256 colors and in 640x480 options from the FF7.exe.

Thanks again for the help.

If I already have the PC 1998 version, is there any reason why I should get this 2012 version? From reading the Bootleg mod, it sounds like the 2012 needs to be "downgraded" to the 1998 version --> making the 2012 purchase useless for ppl like me?

Can someone clarify? Thanks

Well kind of.
If you downgrade the 2012 version all of it's "benefits" (achievements, Cloud/Internet-Saves, etc.) will be lost.

So, if you have the original version there is no need for the re-release.

I pretty much made an account to thank you ever so much for this post :)

One tiny thing though, in the tute do a little step and link to aalias driver?

Only took 5 minutes to figure out that I needed it because it is mentioned in pretty small text! But it'd have been 5 minutes faster if it was a part of the tute!

But, I say again, thank you, ever so much.

hmm.. i emailed Square Enix and was recommended to buy the 2012 version if I want to play on Win 8.  So can anyone confirm about this? 1998 version can't run on Win 8?

Ok, I'm new here, so first of all, hello, merry Christmas, and thank you so much for this, I've been playing FF7 over and over since I was like 10 and I wanted something like this so badly.

Now I don't know if I should ask here or somewhere else but I need urgent help, I'm stuck and I don't want to lose all the hours I've played to get out of midgar...

I was playing in hardcore mod, and saved just before the motorcycle minigame, I fought the robot boss thingie and all was good until he attacked all my characters dealing 7777 HP damage to all of them... That was insane, I don't know why it happened and how I was supposed to deal with that, but THE REAL PROBLEM is that now when I load, it loads straight into that battle and all my characters start with 1 HP and since the battle starts with an unblockable attack to all the party, I can't do anything about it and that's my only save file so I don't want to start again, is there anything I can do with this bug???

Please help, because that was extremely frustrating... Maybe I could use some sort of cheat or someone could point me to a save file I can use, I don't care if I lose my items, and character custom names, and such, as long as I can start right after leaving midgar.

THANKS!! And keep up the good work.

An unmodified FFVII would cause some trouble on W8 - but we're talking about modding it, right? ;)

Wow, that was quick! Thank you, this thing is amazing and really easy to setup. And I never would've guessed something like this existed... I can't believe I'll be able to adjust the game to be almost exactly as I left it. Thank you again! Btw PitBrat, you're one of the masterminds behind all this right? Big fan!
