Getting the game to run on XP is no problem anymore (or did you have vista in mind?) and the corruptions we are talking about here will not be gone if you boot the same machine into Win98 (are there any drivers for the 8800 for Win9x systems anyway?). So this wouldn't do any good.
However, I thought about buying a Voodoo1 Addon card for PCI slots on ebay. Since my TFT has DVI and Vga connectors, I'd need no loop cable and this should work at the side of my main video card that has only DVI. But this is no elegant solution at all, because it is additional hardware, it blocks one pci slot (I only have two of those precious old things), not everyone has a monitor that has two input connectors and there will not be an endless supply of old PCI accelerators.

Hmmmm as much as its a cool idea I can't really as my motherboard has 2 PCI's, 1 of which gets covered by my chunky ass 8800. The other has my wireless PCI card in it and all ive got after that are 2 PCI-E x 1 slots.

I suppose there is the alternative of playing on my mum's piece of crap downstairs. She runs Vista I think has integrated graphics on a P4 2ghz 478 skt. If i get a PCI card for that it might just workies.

Hey guys just to let you know, Ive installed the game and the graphics in battle, on the map and walking round northern crater are fine for me (apart from in the highwind theres no moving sky when you look out the front of the ship, meh). Granted I need to explore fully to see if i come accross any errors. All I did was install the 1.02 patch, the movie player off the install disc and the upside down movie patch (coz my movies didnt work at first).

Are you talking about "your mum's piece of crap" or are you talking about your Geforce 8800 rig?
If so, what forceware version are you using?

well i run x64 vista and it works so x86 isnt really a solution. Plus does Anisotropic filtering REALLY make a difference on a game like FF7? and AAx16 surely isnt going to make very much diff at all when i got it at a decent res.

yes...Vista!  :-D

AA is the max possible forced by drivers (Coverage sample 16xQ) + trasparency supersampling and AF 16x.

No, you can enable 32xAA too with this driver.
Just use the nHancer, it enables some Super/Multisampling combined modes.

Yet strangely enough that piece of software is so crap that it runs progs faster and more stable than XP ever could, is x10 better at multitasking than XP and looks lovely. Vista is better than XP and XP was better than all those before it (trust me I've used them all!)

I was very surprised that Vista runs such an old game! Christian Vista comes with DX10 as standard.

*ahem* Bit Torrent *cough cough* Alternatively Vista is purchasable from good retailers OEM for about £60 for home premium and about £120 for ultimate.  That of course is UK but would probably be cheaper in the states if thats where your from.

No, i'm from austria. I think home will cost about € 100 or so...
EDIT: I've got a question: I have two HDDs, one with winXP and two other partitions, one with a single partition for games. Would it be better to install Vista on another partition on the HDD with XP or on the one without XP? And is there a way to make two partitions out of one so i can split my games partition into two ones - one for games and one for vista?
One more question: Is it better to get Vista 32 or 64 bit (intel core 2 duo E6600)?
