This is certainly an interesting read. I think everyone knew that FFXIV was crap, and FFXIV:ARR was good, but Yoshida's explanation of why it was bad and how it was fixed is quite an interesting read.

Here is a sweet cover of J-E-N-O-V-A & Birth of a God, performed by the band Tetrimino.

And just for good measure, I looped up an OGG version. It should work with Aali's driver and the Steam version with a simple rename.

This is absolutely worth a read, especially if you are annoyed by how ugly the recent Android/iOS releases of Final Fantasy V and VI are.

That Chinese bootleg NES version of FF7 has been translated to English, rebalanced, and released. Now it doesn't suck. Check it out.

Disclaimers:
1. This is not my project. That should be obvious, but it needs stated just in case. The project leader is Lugia2009.
2. This release is an IPS patch, which requires a ROM of FF7 NES. I will not provide a link to this ROM, and I ask that nobody else does either.

This game is an RPG. It's really slow to play, but rather addicting. I highly recommend checking it out. It's mostly something that can be played in the background while you do something else, because so much of it is waiting; ideal for while you're watching TV or at school or work.

How far can you get? I'm sure there's a lot that I haven't discovered yet, and I'm really curious what all it has to offer.

edit: This game requires patience, especially at first. You may want to read the FAQ.

Square Enix releasing 'Remaster' soundtracks for SNES Final Fantasy games

I don't know what to think of this. If I had to guess, I'd say they're probably resequencing the music, using the original samples (it wasn't synthesized, after all) and using modern hardware/software to completely bypass the SNES's less-than-stellar sound output. It's a solid way to get much crisper, clearer sound than retro consoles could produce, while remaining quite faithful to the original sound.

Here's a fan-made example of this technique:
Original | Remastered

That's not to say this is necessarily what they're doing, but it's a reasonably cheap and easy way to remaster a sampled retro soundtrack. The fact that this technique won't work with synthesized music, such as in the NES Final Fantasy games, combined with the fact that they're not remastering those games, is reasonably strong evidence that's what they're doing.

For the remainder of the month, Daz Studio 4, Hexagon 2.5, and Bryce 7 Pro can be gotten legally, for free! I can't speak for how good they are, never having used them myself, nor do I know what formats they use or how easily they can be used with FF7, but together these normally run for over $800 USD. I strongly recommend at least checking 'em out if you're interested, it's a darn good deal (and probably a great deal more noob-friendly than Blender).

FF7 Tools / [FF7] Change movie path - FF7MovieDir (v2)

FF7MovieDir
Version 2 (hopefully final)

The Problem
Whether copying movies from the discs to your hard drive or downloading replacements from the internet, a lot of people want FF7 to read its movies from the hard drive. The thing is, FF7 normally only wants to read movies from the original discs, and changing this setting requires navigating the registry, which can be slow and clunky for those who know how, and downright scary for those who don't.

The Solution
That's where FF7MovieDir comes in! A small little app I made, it serves one purpose alone: to do this for you. No more mucking around trying to remember if it's in HKLM or HKCU, no more long tree structures in a tiny little sidebar, no more chance of typos when actually putting the new directory in, just a simple folder select dialog box.

Download: MEGA | zShare

I don't expect this'll change the world, but hopefully a few people will find it easier and/or less intimidating than doing it manually.

Umm, what? The PS3 is perfectly backwards compatible with PS1 games. PSN is simply an alternative way of acquiring the games, handy for games like FF7 where original discs could cost a lot more.
