Title: Mod download problem/7th Heaven
Post by: Quez256 on 2019-07-18 04:08:12
Hey, first post here, couldn't find any answers anywhere else; so, here I am.

Been running through 7th Heaven for about a week now, had a bit of trouble the first time, everything seems in good working order now; just one last problem.  Every mod that affects character models and spell effects in excess of ~85MB fails to download after a quick error (although "downloading" remains static in the program ad infinitum), something about a system component.  Anyway, I had tried an idea posted a few years ago of running the temp file within a browser to download the .iro directly, but no luck there either; nothing but "404" for each corresponding mod.  Now I'm not entirely sure if this is connected directly to file size (error pertaining to google), mod type (if there's assets missing on my end), a firewall problem, or something else I haven't considered.  On a side note, 7th Heaven is also failing to update automatically when that option is selected within the general settings, not sure if that could be related.

Running version 1.5.6.0

If any other details are needed, feel free to ask

Thanks

There are built-in compatibility settings that apply automatically when mods are activated, but they only work when you download directly from the Catalog. Sorry, but the mods won't be offered in any direct download format because I'd rather deal with download issues than "This mod doesn't work..." posts from users activating incompatible mods together.

Thanks for the reply!  Any specifics aside what I mentioned needed to clarify the exact problems I'm having?  Hopefully there's a solution.

Quick side note, when I mentioned the idea of directly downloading the .iro files, I should have elaborated that they would then be installed through the 7th Heaven process; I'm nowhere near tech-savvy enough to find a workaround that might cause all sorts of compatibility problems.

Auto update is broken. Turn it off and stick with whatever version of 1.56 you're running.

Sometimes the hosts have issues and downloads go down for a bit. Wait a day or however long it takes for it to come back up. Maybe it's your firewall settings...I don't know everyone's computer and ISP setups, so it's up to the user to figure those out. Not everyone gets this issue download issue, and it seems to resolve itself after a few days of waiting.

The "idea posted" for downloading them manually through a browser was never the intention, and I don't personally recommend it. Not gonna stop people from doing it, but doing that is basically ignoring the advice of those who helped set this up for the public. There's a purpose for doing everything the way the Tutorial says to do it because this is an old game that is very sensitive to modding, so it takes quite a few particular steps to ensure a smooth setup. Downloading from the Catalog is meant to help, not hinder, the average user who doesn't know much about modding FF7. The compatibility feature is an important feature to help auto guide you out of mistakes. If users don't want that feature, feel free to try the workarounds for manually downloading, but at that point you're on your own with any further issues.

Is there any other possibility that this problem is due to the size of the mods?  And would that change anything?

Possible, and if so, would relate to bandwidth limitations. Only way to fix that would be to spend money to upgrade the hosting account, but we don't get paid here, so...waiting game it is.

Seems likely that would be the case then; since when I tried the direct download idea there were multiple errors within the temp files stating the file was too large to download.  All of them pertaining to google hosts.  Well, like you said, waiting game it is.
