Hi all - I recently purchased the Steam version of the game and, probably like most of you, was horrified at how bad the background textures look. For the time being that's really all I have any interest in modding - I just want an experience as close to the original as possible (and with the old CRTs the game certainly didn't look this pixelated...).

A quick search led me here (to my great relief). After poking around the forums for a while I thought I figured out the process to install the textures.

I downloaded the game converter (FF7_GameConverter_0.11.exe) and patched the game successfully, then downloaded and unpacked the 3gb texture RAR, unpacked (moved FacePalmer folder directly from the RAR into the Mods folder of the game, so the path is now FF7/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VII/mods/FacePalmer/field/(ancnt1 -zz8). I modified the ff7_opengl.cfg file to set 'mod_path = FacePalmer/'.

When I run the game, though, I don't see any of the textures. Do I need any other mods like Aali's field background editor? To be clear, this is the Steam version and I haven't done ANY modding whatsoever except the Game Converter.

I apologize for the basic question - most of the stuff on the forums is way over my head, and I'm pretty lost here, since I'm pretty sure the path is correct.

Good god you are all badass. Thanks for the info, all, I didn't realize I had had the mod installed incorrectly; based on descriptions I had read I was just expecting minor AI tweaks and fixes. This mod is definitely hardcore, I'm blown away that anyone can get through the game with that difficulty, and I'm a pretty experienced RPGer...

I appreciate your kind words Alyza, but I'm going to try on a more moderate difficulty before I tackle this one =D

Thanks again all for your hard work - the fully modded FF7 is a sight to see.

Troubleshooting / Gjoerulv Hardcore mod difficulty problem
« on: 2013-10-25 22:42:19 »
This could just be me, but I'm finding the game difficulty to be INSANE right away...the first triggered battles force me to use a couple potions, and any random fights where I encounter the mechs I have to SPAM SPAM SPAM lightning just to kill it. This doesn't seem right...I don't even come CLOSE to closing out the first boss fight, whereas on my laptop (un-modded) it's cake like it always was.

For some actual information to compare, Cloud/Barret are at around 230hp, and I obviously can't level grind with no recovery items/materia. They get hit hard (30-40hp / normal attack, around 100hp for special attacks - this is on trash mobs btw) and the mobs have 300-800hp. This seems insane to me...either this is a patch bug or I'm missing something very very fundamental, because this is 10x harder than the unmodded version I have on my laptop.

Any ideas anyone? And is there a way for me to patch over with another difficulty mod? Cuz I can't even play it this way...I've died 3 or 4 times already just fighting trash, it sucks. Thanks in advance for your help.

EDIT: Sorry I did not include the possibly useful info that I down loaded EQ2Alyza's mod zip file, loaded her settings, and went with that without changing anything. I downloaded and installed the SquareSoft online version, patched with Game Converter, then ran BFE.exe to bootleg. Had all mods green/yellow. Went through this whole process twice, same problem :(

Troubleshooting / No music in cutscenes
« on: 2013-10-25 00:44:31 »
Well,

After several tries and many hours I finally got downloaded and working nicely, ran the bootleg, and fired up the game....and promptly noticed there's NO sound whatsoever in the opening, and no cursor change beeps at the NEW GAME / CONTINUE screen. The music kicks in at the end of the cutscene where the camera moves down to the train and the guys hop out, but there are no sound effects like weapon swings, or Biggs and Jessie's punch and kick at the beginning.

The crazy thing is the AVIs being played in the game, when I open them in Windows, sound perfectly fine. So I'm wondering if anyone can let me know why the game itself can't seem to decode the sound that WMP can. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks everyone for your hard work on this project too!
