Title: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2009-05-31 04:01:27
While this tutorial still works, there is now an easier way. If you plan on using either the original Playstation PSF music, or FinalFanTim's wonderful remastered soundtrack, you can use this installer (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=10546.0), which will do all the work for you. Simply download, install, and enjoy! I'm going to leave the tutorial here for people who still want it.

TwilightFantasy's tutorial was good three years ago, but the advent of Windows Vista and the rise in popularity of x64 operating systems have created a number of issues that his tutorial could not have accounted for. Furthermore, there were some issues that even Win98 users had that his tutorial didn't address. As such, I decided to create an updated tutorial, as well as a zip file that contains everything you'll need, except for the actual music.

1. Download this zip file (http://www.covarr.net/storage/ff7musicbundlejuly2010.zip) (mirror (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ML3MOCAV))

Contents:

2. Extract the contents of this zip file into your Final Fantasy VII directory (usually "C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\" for Win32, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\" on Vista x64 and Win7 x64).

3. In the "ficedula" directory which should have been unzipped, open FF7Music.exe and click Configure.

4. In the "Setup" tab (where you should probably start out), change where it's looking for the input and output plugins. The ff7music.ini file included assumes the game is installed to "C:\FF7" as it is on my machine, but yours is probably in a different place (one of the locations I mentioned in step 2). Use in_psf.dll for PSX rips (.psf files) and in_mad.dll for MP3s. The output plugin will almost always be out_wave.dll, unless FF7Music is crashing)

5. In the "Files" tab, select a profile to work with. The ff7music.ini file I included already has profiles for the remastered soundtrack (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8160.0) (though you'll have to put all the songs in the same folder), and the PSF collection available at zophar.net. If you wish to use anything else, you'll have to set up the songs individually yourself. Fortunately, TwilightFantasy had a list of what songs were what, so you'll know what you're doing if you edit it.

EDIT: Can I also add that Bombing Mission, Fanfare 2, Shinra Explodes 1 and 2 are unavailable in the normal OST's.  If you wish to have these files you must either find an MP3 Trimmer to cut part of the song out, or I can have mine up for download if allowed/requested.

6. At the bottom of this section, where it says "Paths to search for music files:", replace the paths listed with wherever you put your music files. Make sure there aren't any spaces in these paths, or FF7Music will likely parse them wrong and not work correctly. (e.g. "C:\ff7songs\" is okay, "C:\ff7 songs" is not). If you're using Windows Vista or later, click Save and Exit and close the program for now.

7. If you don't already have it, download and install Aali's Custom Graphics Driver (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8306), and delete the # before music_plugin in the config file.

8. (This step removed, placeholder to keep the numbering consistent)

9. Right click on ff7.exe and choose properties. In the compatibility tab, set it to run in Windows 98 mode.

10. If you're using Windows XP or earlier, skip this step. Right click on FF7Music.exe and choose properties. In the compatibility tab, set it to run in Windows XP SP2 mode, and check "Run this program as an administrator".

11. Back in FF7Music.exe configuration, in the Playback Options tab, where it says "Midi device", choose the device that Final Fantasy VII is configured to use. If you're using Aali's driver, it doesn't matter what you choose.

At this point, you should be ready to go! Just make sure to launch the game from FF7Music.exe instead of from your regular start menu shortcut or from ff7.exe.

Note: If you're having stability problems, use out_ds.dll for your output plugin.

Got questions? I'll answer them. If a question gets asked repeatedly, I'll update this first post.

edit: OOPS! Turns out that my ini had a major flaw: People in PSF mode would have heard Rufus' welcoming ceremony instead of the full scale attack. This has been fixed.
edit: Now uses fake_midi in Aali's opengl driver
edit: Aali changed his driver, so I changed my tutorial accordingly.
edit: New host for the zip. Thanks, MilesTailsPrower!
edit: Steps 7 and 9 seem to be required on XP. Even if they're not, they won't do any harm. Step 10 is still Vista+ because XP's compatibility mode can't be set to itself, that's just turning it off. O_o.
edit: Now with out_ds.dll! Should help with stability issues.
edit: Fixed some PSF mistakes in the ini file. Thanks, Kein!

I've noticed this. Even though Those Chosen by the Planet is very different from cintro (besides the beginning, obviously), people don't seem to take much interest in it.

Anyway, here it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_nD3P4nC_I).

Yeah when I made my walkthrough I had to edit it in.  It is just a looped file.  I have that file and can make the loop if you want me to?

The other thing is, does ff7music allow this to play in the game or is it completely missing the item?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

The mp3 he links to in the description works for me. I use:

cephiros - Those Chosen By The Planet

cintro - mp3 from that video

and the right music plays in the right places.

BTW, Covarr, does this setup get rid of the problem of music restarting whenever the player changes a screen?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2009-05-31 20:04:37
The included ini file should have the restarting issue fixed for most songs, although you might notice a few continuing when they SHOULD restart. Unfortunately, FF7music doesn't know how to be smart about it, so it's impossible to get it perfect.

As for the list of what's what, I just quoted the other tutorial before. I'll correct cintro right now.

Seifer Almasy, what exactly is your problem? No music, original midi music, or new songs and old songs playing simultaneously? Additionally, what filetype are your songs (MP3 or miniPSF), and are you using the correct plugin?

Also, what OS are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit?

OS:  Windows vista x64  SP2
Sound card:  Audigy 2 Platinum Ex

Problem:  No sound.  No mp3, no psf.  Followed all instructions to the letter.

Please send me the log you get with ff7music (when you entera  town)so I can compare it....

I followed the guide and I'm not getting any music, PSF or midi wise.
I used the psf's from zophar.net but the files seemed kind of small...
Help please!

@terminater27 and Seifer Almasy: If you're not getting music at all, you got steps 7 and 8 correct at the very least. Try unchecking "Emulate ramps" and "obey 'stop'" in the Playback Options tab. If that doesn't work, could you send me screenshots of your "Setup", "Files", and "Playback Options" tabs in FF7Music?

@Seifer Almasy: I can't send you a log, because I only just got into this game again recently, and haven't left Midgar yet. If I get out of Midgar and also have trouble with music, I'll do some troubleshooting to see if I can fix it.

@terminater27: The PSFs should be small. There isn't a single one above 5k.

I will do as you suggested and see what happens, also the log will be ok from any place where the music changes.  such as aeriths place to the slum area or church to slum.

Wait, has yours been playing music until you change locations and then losing it, or not playing any at all? The answer to that question could affect the solution to the problem.

:D I got it working using the remastered mp3's instead of the psf files.
I wish the battle music looped more cleanly though. You can clearly tell when it ends and starts again.
Theres a brief silence right before it finishes looping. Btw, what does delay stop, obey stop and emulate ramp do again?

To get the PSF to work you have to rename them all psf files...

to have FF7 In front of their name.......

Like this....... http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss203/BrokenCrowe/PSFexample.jpg

Just leave Final Fantasy 7.psflib as is... don't rename it or anything... or the music won't play....

it worked fine with xp, and i have had absolutely no sound at all with it with vista x64 sp2  , will check what you suggested before though soon

Obey stop tells it to stop when the regular game midis would stop if they were playing. Otherwise, you could end up with music where there SHOULDN'T be any. Emulate ramps copies the volume ups and downs that the game midis would have. Not sure what Delay Stop does.

If you're using the PSFs, make sure you have the right set chosen in the "Files" tab, and are using in_psf.dll, otherwise it won't play.

I'm not getting sound effect volume at all but everything else is working fine. Great guide, so much better and more clear than the sticky.

EDIT: Ok, when I first started up, I did have sound effects but the default music was also playing on top of the FF7music. I went into config and lowered what would appear to affect the game music but it seems as if sound effect volume is dependent on game volume. How do I get sound effects without having to hear two sets of music?

dyserga, this is something that steps 7 and 8 were supposed to solve. Are you sure you ff7config.exe to use LoopBe for it's MIDI driver instead of Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth?

I followed your directions exactly.

Is LoopBe suppose to be muting when midi songs play on FF7? Because its not. And when I manually do it it does not do anything. Both FF7 music and FF7 config are pointing to it.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2009-06-01 22:22:06
LoopBe doesn't produce sound. If you're hearing anything at all, it's not using LoopBe.

edit: This is just music, though. LoopBe shouldn't affect sfx.

edit: Try running FF7Config in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode, see if that fixes anything.
edit: should have mentioned, if you change the compatibility mode for FF7Config, you have to re-do the settings.

GOD DAMN that took a very long time but I finally figured it out. I hate Vista more than ever now.

I'll try and write a guide in case anyone has the same issues as me but I can't guarantee coherency. This is for Vista users who have done everything in Covarr's guide but still have two sets of music playing, the midi and the music you selected with FF7music. If you try to go into the game's config settings and lower the music volume, you also lose sound effect volume. Here is how to fix that.

1.) First, some house cleaning. This may not be a mandatory step. Go to your User directory. Right click inside somewhere, go to properties, and select show hidden files and folders. Next, go into your AppData folder (it will look like a ghost folder if you are able to show hidden files and folders). Find your VirtualStore folder somewhere in that director. I had to go through AppData > Local to find mine. Inside your Virtual Store folder, navigate to your Final Fantasy VII program folder as if you were navigating to it from your C:\ drive. Delete your SquareSoft, Inc or Final Fantasy VII folder (however you installed it, just get everything). If you were never able to find your Virtual Store folder or the Final Fantasy VII folder within it, great.
2.) Download Highwind. You can find that here: http://christian59.ch.funpic.de/html/highwind.htm
3.) Extract the contents of the Highwind download to a folder, doesn't really matter where. Desktop, user-created subfolder within FF7 directory, whatever. I would NOT recommend the root directory of FF7.
4.) Right click on Highwind.exe and go to Compatibility. Select Run As Administrator.
5.) Open Highwind.exe. Click on Open Archive and find midi.lgp by going to your FF7 directory then Data > Midi. Open it.
6.) Make sure Create Backup is checked.
7.) Click Remove until everything is, well, removed.
8.) Click Save Changes and close Highwind.
9.) On FF7 music, click Run FF7. Tada!

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2009-06-02 03:44:34
For Jenova battles, make sure that in FF7Music, chu2 is set to your J-E-N-O-V-A mp3, and make sure that your mp3y and plays in other media players. If the problem is with specific songs, then it's almost certainly one of those two possiblities.

I can't help you with Aerith's death, I don't know what song plays at this point.

dyserga, I'm going to link to your directions in my post. I'm using the Windows 7 RC, and I suspect that they made significant changes to Virtual Store, which is why I didn't have to do any of that to get it to work. I also can't imagine why it's not routing the original MIDI music through LoopBe like it's supposed to. LoopBe by itself is basically just a midi device with no instruments or sound output. If the MIDI is really going through LoopBe, you should not hear the original music. Also, I have a question. What other FF7 patches and fixes are you using? Additionally, do you have any other software that could affect MIDI output, especially softsynths such as TiMidity?

I'm using 1.2, Chocobo patch, HD char polygons, and hi-res. True Motion Codec (no K-Lite) and Aali's (sp?) graphics driver if that is relevant. Only software I have that could affect midi's is the Creative software bundle for my sound card, which is a Sound Blaster X-Fi for notebooks. This is the first time I've ever had to really mess with midis on this computer.

I borrowed a lot of my solution from this thread http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8245.0 so kudos to a few users in that thread.

Post by: Covarr on 2009-06-03 06:24:34
I'm assuming that you have the game installed to the default location? If so, the input and output plugins should be as follows:

C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\in_mad.dll
C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\out_wave.dll

BrokenCrowe, in_mad plays MP3s as well. I used it instead of in_mp3 because it has better compatibility (it works on FF7Music AND Vista x64).

I'm having an issue. Here's what i've done :

Installed FF7Music

Kept the settings the same. Except i changed the default midi device to the one i'm using.

I have all of the remastered soundtrack in my psf folder, where ff7music is told to look.

And yet.. My midis keep playing. Basically, the same problem that Cloud had. I'll get some SS's of my settings.

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll89/Mufalmar/PlaybackOptions.jpg
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll89/Mufalmar/Setup.jpg

BTW : I JUST changed the folder where it's searching to the extended one that you see in the screenshot. The original "psf\" didn't work either.

But the High Wind thing does work. I had the same problem. Wait, you are using Vista right?

FF7Music sometimes throws a fit when you put your music in a path with spaces in it. I would STRONGLY advise something more direct, such as C:\FF7PSF or something like that, rather than leaving them in your game's install directory.

As for the plugins, it doesn't really matter where they are as long as FF7Music can find them. I've seen it said that they need to be in the same directory as ff7.exe or that they need to be in the ficedula folder, but I'm pretty sure this is not the case.

This thread, ABSOLUTELY saved my life; no joke. My room mate and I died when it finally worked, however; one error..

Since I have been using FF7Music, it seems to be ignoring my FF7Config. It is selected on fullscreen, but plays in quarter screen, and also ignored my Genova Character Edit. I used the edit, just to check to see if it was connecting with my save files, and it was not.

The music works now, but it seems to be ignoring the original config and save files. Hmmm. Has anyone encountered this?

Check your FF7Config's compatibility mode. If that helps, tell me, and I'll update the tutorial.

Also, what OS are you running?

One question: What would happen if I do not grant administrative permission to FFMusic? What exactly requires admin privileges? What purpose does it serve that cannot serve with just standard privileges?

Currently, I'm running FF7 and its add-ons all with standard privileges and I see nothing wrong. But am I missing something? If yes, I'd like to know what and whether it is worth losing. Note that admin privileges are not to be given to every Dick v1.0, Tom v2.0 and Harry 3.0.

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2009-06-07 15:27:51
When I had FF7 installed to the default location, I needed FF7Music to have admin privileges so that it could write to its own ini file; anything that tries to write to the Program Files directory needs to be run as an admin. However, once you're done setting everything up, I suppose it doesn't need to be run as an admin.

Not that it's a security threat to run FF7Music as an admin, since I've never heard of any virus, trojan, worm, etc that takes advantage of it, but I can understand that it would be annoying if that dialog box popped up every time you use it.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Fleet Command on 2009-06-07 18:24:54
That's it? Really, that ONLY it?

Under Windows Vista, no issue regarding writing to INI files occured: File System Virtualization automatically kicked in and the INI files were redirected outside Program Files folder. (And by the way, even on Vista I don't get a UAC popup because in Vista too, I run under a Standard User Account.) On Windows XP, I forsaw this issue and granted write permisions on .INI and .CFG files to Authenticated Users group.

As for you and me hearing about a trojan taking advantage of something, I won't wait for that. Because (1) viruses infect any EXE thing, exploitable or not if you give unnecessary admin permissions; besides, (2) when we hear such news as a malware taking advantage of something, the said malware has already affected thousand; finally, (3) every application, exploitable or not, which do not really need administrative privileges must act like a good citizen and do not request privileges of a president. This is law. Make FF7 an exception and tommorow you'll find yourself making every pig.exe, dick.bat, tom.com, harry.js an exception.

I am running vista on 32. The compatibility for config is xp/sp2. I tried using different compatibilities, and going through the config each time. Im so curious as to why this may be happening. It's like an unsolved riddle.

Post by: Covarr on 2009-06-09 04:43:33
Alas, I have no idea what could be causing it to ignore config settings. It's probably related to Vista's virtual store, but I don't know enough about virtual store to troubleshoot it, or really anything at all.

does anyone have the following problem?

if I load ff7music, I have to open config box and manually fix the path where it searches for music files.  This has to be done everytime the app is loaded, so basically the path gets reset to an invalid path.
If I open the config box to edit options and then save without editing the path, the path breaks again and so basically everytime I make changes to config I also have to fix the path.

here is the correct path to my music files.

F:\games\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\Ficedula\FF7Mp3\PSF

here is the path it resets to

F:\games\Square
Soft,
Inc\Final
Fantasy
VII\Ficedula\FF7Mp3\PSF

basically it changes spaces to new lines.  it also sometimes adds a \ to the end which breaks things.

Hmm, this is an odd problem indeed; I've never seen this one before. Have you tried tinkering around with the compatibility mode? I know that I couldn't get FF7Music to run properly in Win98 compatibility mode.

Honestly, FF7Music is so filled with problems and bugs, especially when used with newer OS's, that if I knew any language other than Applesoft Basic I'd probably write a new program myself, just to alleviate all these issues.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: obesebear on 2009-06-13 22:05:47
I thought it might be important to note that in awe.lgp there is 1 extra file called lb2_awe.mid.  It seems to be basically the same music as lb2.mid only more high pitched.

In ygm.lgp and xg.lgp there are 4 extra files (which do not include lb2_awe.mid).  These files are heart.mid (ends almost instantly), sato.mid (I can't hear anything), sensui.mid ( the same sound repeats over and over in rhythm) and wind.mid (might be the track that plays when trying to cross the 3 different windy chasms in the Northern Crater).

In closing.  It is probably best to use the Yamaha midi player and make sure to add these files into your FF7Music config file.  My suggestion would be to create multiple copies of heart.mid and rename them to aseri.mid cintro.mid sadsid.mid etc etc until all the midis that you have mp3's for are replaced.  This way the midi volume can be left alone in game and any missing sound effects (should) also play.

I don't know if this has been said anywhere, but there's way too much stuff to read. So i'm going to just explain what i'm annoyed at

I have everything set up correctly (i believe) My music files ARE playing.

I have the correct Midi Device selected with mute midi on custom playback checked. Loop custom files is checked, and Resuming is on Always

I have Emulate Ramps, and Obey 'stop' checked as well.

Now... My problem :

- The MP3s take a few seconds sometimes, maybe even a minute, to start up. This is especially annoying in the victory theme music.

- I am noticing at the end of my mp3s, sometimes the midi will start to play.

- Sometimes my midi's will play along with my mp3s, and that's just damn annoying.

musaru: If you're on Vista or later, and you can hear midis playing, then it's not using loopbe like it should if you followed the tutorial. This could be for any number of reasons, including FF7.exe simply being stupid. If you're using XP or earlier, simply having "mute midi on custom playback" checked should fix it, but no guarantees since this program seems to arbitrarily not work right.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: musaru on 2009-06-14 14:52:43
No i'm using XP, not Vista :S

Okay. I've tried deleting my Midi.lgp, and that didn't do anything. Midis aren't playing DURING the MP3s anymore, but they're still playing before and after them for a few seconds. Kind've annoying, especially with the buffering delays for the MP3s.

I'm still getting the delay for my mp3 plays. I went into my buffer settings for in_mad.dll, but i can't really change anything. I changed my connection speed to < 1 mbps (which it is) and it's still taking a while to load. Under File in the buffer tab, i can't change the size setting. It only has medium as a choice. I would mess with the advanced settings, if someone has any ideas what i should put for

Input, Output, and input refill level =/
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: DLPB_ on 2009-06-14 15:11:48
If you are using XP you do not need in_mad and both can be altered.  Advanced mode for the buffer settings of in_mad  and the in_mp3 ones are simple.

As for Midi still playing at the start, that is impossible...if you have deleted those files, I cannot see how that is happening.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: musaru on 2009-06-14 15:47:11
They aren't simple for me. I don't know what values for input/output will work =/

And i'm serious. i tried highwind, removed all the midis in the .lgp, and they were still playing. Then i deleted the midi.lgp and they are STILL playing. Here's a screen shot of my midi folder

You aren't using the ultima edition of 7 I hope?  Cause that won't work...

But all you do with the buffer is tell it to use soemthing lower than say 250 KB.....

That sjhould look like an instant buffer in that case...  if not, go lower.  Experiment.

I have no idea why you are still getting midi playing....you may be mistaking it for something else.  Please upload a sample of the music if you can?

any case....  if the midis are gone out of that file (infact that file isnt there)  I dont see how midis are still playing.  Does this happen on particular screens?  Does the correct midi always play in the correct areas or is it the same midi?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

Hold on. I'll record a small bit of it.

But first, yes, the midis play in the correct places. They start up playing, then stop when the mp3 is starting to play.

EDIT : http://www.mediafire.com/?2jgvtnyztya

Sorry that the file is 40MB for only 8 seconds of recording.. I used Fraps, and i'm guessing it's because it's a .avi =/
Id've converted it but i don't have any good converters -.-

But you're right about Vista. Virtual Store is the most irritating "feature" introduced since Windows ME's borked implementation of System Restore (You know, the one that defeated antivirus software by restoring all your trojans, viruses, worms, etc. as soon as you removed them).

I downloaded your music pack, got the psf files from Zophar.net and followed your instructions on getting it all to work.
I run on XP and managed to get the game working just fine.
Excecpt I cant seem the get the music right.
I start up the game, it works fine, when I get to the actual game, there's no music! (Yeah I turned off my midi sound)
I've tried just about checking and unchecking everything in configuration, but the music just won't play. (the music directory isn't the problem either.

I really don't know what to do!

ok things to check.

path to music files (seems you done this)
winamp installed correctly
latest version of ff7music that doesnt need exe changing.
ff7music in correct directory under ff7.
launching ff7 from ff7music.

whatch the ff7music window when you do something that should start a track playing like entering world map, and see if it reports an error.

WinAMP doesn't need to be installed. In FF7Music, see if you can configure the waveout plugin. I'm pretty sure the plugin settings are stored in the registry (universal for both WinAMP and FF7Music), so if you have WinAMP installed and changed the settings for out_wave.dll, it could be that those changes are carrying over to this. Just a guess, since your settings appear to be correct.

Also, FF7Music doesn't work right if there's a slash at the end.

lb2_awe is One Winged Angel with lyrics. It won't use it unless you have a Creative sound card that uses soundfonts. This is as opposed to the default midi, which doesn't have lyrics.

If the music currently playing doesn't stop when a new one starts, it probably means that Obey 'Stop' isn't checked in the Playback Options tab, when it should be.

Everything looks to be set up properly. Have you already tried messing around with the compatibility modes that programs run in?

Also, FF7Music doesn't work right if there's a slash at the end.

Mine works flawlessly

Hellbringer616, I'm using Windows 7 7201 x64.  I followed Covarr's new tutorial to get everything working, but discovered in_mad.dll and loopbe didn't work for me for some reason.  You may want to try going back to the Microsoft GS Wavetable (in ff7music config and ff7 config) and in_mp3.dll.
I also noticed my out_wave.dll is V2.1 and yours is 2.02a

Where did you get your out_wave.dll? i am using the stuff provided, And the midis now play, and i think everything is still playing when it shouldn't... Is there a way to just add direct MP3 support in FF7?

Alright, got everything working, loopbe wasn't muting the midi's like it should have, quick trip with highwind fixed that :-P, minor annoyance as to the sound always restarts when i finish a battle in the first mission when it should keep playing, But hopefully it will continue to work as it should :-D

No worries :-D

Edit: Take it no-one has proper MP3's "Fanfare 2", "Shinra Explodes" 1 and 2 as well as "The Makou Cannon Is Fired" Without "shinra explodes"?

The OST mp3s have all those songs merged, you can cut them apart with Audacity or some other program easily enough.

Okay, here's my problem.

Using XP, followed the guide to a T. I keep getting the following thing showing up in FF7 Music over and over again:
Quote
PicCtrl: DisableControl-Disable AntiBlur checkbox

PicCtrl-OnTimer: init video control

No music plays, and whenever the music is supposed to change, I get a windows error box that says

Quote
Access violation at address 100364DE in module 'in_psf.dll'. Read of address 00000048

As well as one from FF7 Music saying there are access violatins and read of addresses at 00000000.

Any clue?

I have two thoughts, don't know if either of them will help any.

It seems like one or more items from the pack I provided is corrupted. You may want to redownload.

Also, do you have any other mods installed?

'Am new here, but I wanted to reiterate that my own problem was solved when I removed all drivers that were not being used from the directory that held the PSF driver [as Seifer Almasy first mentioned].

I also wanted to say that guests may not know how to specify the "midi = false" within Aali's driver. That is done by opening 'ff7_opengl.cfg' in notepad and changing the appropriate string there [then saving].

Anyway, after getting the PSF files to play, a new problem arose. The music wouldn't change when going into normal or boss battles. The fanfare celebration PSF triggered after a battle, and the scene music resumes, but the battle won't play [with Ramp/Stop either on or off and the appropriate PSF file names]. Eventually with some tinkering, I got it to play, but I am not sure how...if anyone has a similar problem later I can try to help.

That would be because FF7Music doesn't work right. I'm guessing it wasn't something you changed that fixed it, but the rotation of the moon, or some other random nonsense.

I thought about it today, and if I had to wager a guess: the battle music error occured because I had 2 copies of FFmusic running at the same time, but didn't know it. One cpy might not have closed properly, then interfered with the fresh one I was trying to use.

I thought we agreed on how that would be useless? :-P

In fact, I think even the 1.02 release still has most of the .wav code intact.
While FF7Music has its flaws, they are most likely not related to the link between it and FF7. (And, considering the fact that the MIDI player can and will crash the game occasionally, I don't think the .wav player will be much better)

I actually prefer the midi's, but they sound really bad unless you can access the XG control panel for the 20/50 synth included on the game disc. Only Win95/98 will allow that , and installing 50 or 100 by itself [on XP] doesn't yield the same results. You can go ahead and use an older PC to get the intended midi sound,  but then one has to make a choice between the sound and the visuals. I think the PSX music is the best alternative at that point ---- fixing the XG drivers for x64 would my ideal solution ^_^ [and of course most unlikely solution].

I don't really like the RM so much. Too much reverb, decay times on a lot of the patches are too fast  and on many tracks there's not enough panning/separation between intruments. There also seems to be timing issues with mp3's in general.

I keep getting an error saying that something else is trying to use my soundcard - or something. Apparently it has something to do with out_wav.dll

I have no idea what's causing this, because I don't have anything else running that's using my audio device at all. I've never had a problem with ff7music before. Everything works perfectly until about 20 minutes of play, when the sound just cuts out and I get that error. It's rather irritating. Any advice?

If this was too general, I'll wait until the next time it happens and post the exact wording of the error. If I catch the error box quick enough, sometimes I can just click "OK" on it and it'll disappear and the music will return next time I change a screen. If I don't (because it doesn't halt gameplay and I usually can't hear the error sound) it freezes and doesn't let me touch anything. The only way to close it is to "End Task" in task manager and that closes FF7Music.

Grrr!

If it's messing up mid-game, the problem is almost certainly something external. Do you have any notifiers or alarm programs that make a sound? That could mess this up, potentially.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

No, there are no programs running that use the sound card.

If I configure wave_out to use "Microsoft Sound Mapper" instead of my hardware, this seems to have fixed the problem for the time being.

I downloaded the remastered track and tried using mad.dll and outwave.dll as well mp3.dll. I directed FF7 music to look for the files in my FF7 folder as well as my C directory where there isnt any spaces. I'm messed with all the settings and still nothing is happening. Any help?

Sorry about posting too early, I figured out how to fix it. I was using Aali's custom driver and on the new version there's an option to use the Music filter and I turned it on. After that, everything worked fine.

Thats good you got it working but the new custom driver has problems with ff7music.You'll notice when entering leaving vehicles/certain scripted events the music will cut out also when you pay to stay at an Inn it will not play the music. With 0.610b custom driver you can bypass all that with my post above.

I just got the music working properly... Both PSF and OstRE work fine for me. I placed all of the Remastered Songs in C:\FF7\OstRE and all of the PSF files in C:\FF7\FF7_PSF exactly where the FF7 Music Configuration Files have it linked to.

Note that these are the exact same songs that Covarr links to in the first post of this thread and I basically followed his steps directly. I did not have to use Steps 7 through 11 in order to get them to work although I will be testing them out to see if they make things easier.

The only problem I am having is that the tunes tend to stop for a brief moment when they finish then start again... The most annoying one is the very first one when you start a New Game. It plays two separate tunes as if they were one, which is probably how it was created despite the fact that they are two separate tunes.

Well, I tried Step 7 and it stopped playing back all of the music... I tested this by changing things around about 10 times. Although, now that I look back, it was stated to set a line to fake_midi=true. I ended up having to reinstall the game. After I reinstalled the game and set everything up again, the music playback using Ficedula works. Note that I am using LoopBe1 (mute) to disable the FF7 Midi playback while playing the game.

The only thing I have a problem with so far is the cycling of the first song while playing the game from a New Game. Despite the fact that the first tune is supposed to end just as the train arrives and the next tune is supposed to kick in, for some reason it restarts the first tune from the point where Aeris first shows on with her face pointing towards the screen and plays through, then it will restart the tune from that point again. Is there a way to split those two tunes apart so they can play more properly according to the game?

Yes, it can be done, but that would be a whole different tutorial. Audacity should be able to do it easily enough.

Does the PSF version have this problem too? I haven't tested it extensively, only trying it on a save game partway through, but I know that the PSF file has looping cues, and I think that FF7Music should be able to obey them.

Torazo I think I can help you if you wanted but My method is kinda last resort....

Coz if you want....Instead of using the Opening~Bombing Mission.mp3 ( I think thats what is called) Use other mp3 versions of the song...

Or

You could use The HD videos made by Grimmy or was collaborated by him replacing the Opening video...You could google for the separate Bombing Mission.mp3 which only plays the continuation after Opening...FFVII music loops Mp3's ( latest version ) or look for them via this forum...

hope this helps....

I am attempting to find another version of Bombing Run suitable for this on these forums and on google, but every version I have tried starts out the same and starts at the point in which Aeris shows in the opening video. There are a couple I have found that aren't mp3's though... Would be pretty cool to have them split into 2 different mp3's, but I don't know how that would work, nor do I know how to properly do something like that.

I guess I will try replacing the opening video in the mean time, but it would still start playing the mp3 after it ended would it not?

How would splitting the mp3 work with FF7Music? The original midi starts when Aeris pops up in the cinematic, but continues once the train arrives and goes from there, then repeats from the train arrival... If they are split, wouldn't there be 2 different Bombing Runs that FF7Music would need to work with? Is it possible to get FF7Music to load 2 mp3's and get it to load part 1, then repeat part 2 once part 1 finishes?

Well, umm..no What I meant is Once you split the mp3 file. Opening will just be opening. And after the train scene. The Bombing Run.mp3 should kick in and supposed to be looped and that's that..( You have to time the split so It would not sound awkward once the bombing.mp3 loops.) If you're really confused Check this in your FFVII Music:

1. Open FFVII Music Prog.
2. click Configure
3. Click Files Tab
4. Browse thru the profile you're usin. Mine is OSTRemastered ( I'm using The Remastered OST's)
5. look for this names= oa and ob
    oa Should be the Opening.mp3
ob should be the Looped Bombing Run.mp3

That should be there correct placements in game.

Which video are you talking about? There are a few that I have found. There are also a bunch of zipped downloadable videos that have broken files which means you cannot extract the files.

You just have to redownload it man.The files you received are corrupted I think. Check your connection. Although its a really big video file (AVI that is). And it wont work if you're not usin Aali's Graphics Driver.

not your windows dude...The Aali's Custom Graphics Driver's version is what I meant.( Latest is 0.6.10..I think)
Hmm..Your usin CCCP Codec pack?..Well, everyone insists you should use KLite because This would also help in fixing the video problems you'll encounter in the game...

Ok, don't install the Indeo codec pack.  Or any of the other packs like K-Lite and so forth.  There is no reason if you're only doing it for FF7.  Aali's driver has the codecs included with it to properly play ALMOST anything

I guess I just need to replace the one that runs and repeats second, which means I need Looped Bombing Run.mp3... I would just need to find a cut version of the mp3 or find a program that can allow me to cut the music up while keeping the quality and reducing the size of the mp3.

Hmm..Your usin CCCP Codec pack?..Well, everyone insists you should use KLite because This would also help in fixing the video problems you'll encounter in the game...

I downloaded the newest one and tried it. I use CCCP mainly because I have had problems with KLite in the past. After changing, the only problem I have really had was that I cannot use the videos created and placed for download on this site...  The 1:59 video is one that I have yet to see, but that is because I need the Indeo Codec to view it in any of my players... Otokoshi's opening video.

Quote
Hm.. I'll try to upload later. It is in Mp3 version. But its no different than the PSF counterpart

Found the problem... oa and ob are both playing the same mp3. Just need to replace ob with the proper, Looping mp3 instead of the Opening mp3.

Quote
Aiya....Nope.  It shoud not stop the FFVII music from workin..Actually It helps to make it work...Hmm..Could you pls. Specify? Did you change the config.ini included in Aalis Custom Graphics?

I didn't change anything at all. I downloaded it, followed the instructions and played... The game worked fine, but FF7Music wouldn't work.

Quote
Ok, don't install the Indeo codec pack.  Or any of the other packs like K-Lite and so forth.  There is no reason if you're only doing it for FF7.  Aali's driver has the codecs included with it to properly play ALMOST anything

That's good to know. Would like to be able to play the video in Media Player to see what it's like though. So even if I cannot view Otokoshi's 1:59 video in a player, I would be able to view it in game if I had Aali's Drivers installed?

On a side note, you may have noticed that my replies seem like I don't know something, but then I come up with something, it is because I am searching the site as I go through each section so I am much more thorough.

Nice!..It's good to be thorough...so carry on...

So lets get back to your queries:

I am also using OSTRemastered

oa and ob have "02 - Opening ~ Bombing Mission.mp3" which indicates they are playing the same mp3 file which would explain why it does that... I guess I just need to replace the one that runs and repeats second, which means I need Looped Bombing Run.mp3... I would just need to find a cut version of the mp3 or find a program that can allow me to cut the music up while keeping the quality and reducing the size of the mp3.

Correct! Actually oa or Opening.mp3 is actually playing with the First Video of the game. So you only need to find Bombing Run (looped). Search in the internet, The one I have comes from Crisis Core entitled First Mission

I would love to have Aali's working properly with FF7Music... Not sure why it doesn't initially.

Hmmm.. Have ta see a sample picture of it for me to analyze...

Ah! Yosh! Don't use the old ones ... Use the HD version of the same AVI  that's the one you should use..Not the old one mostly because It needs the Indeo thing...Thats why ya really need Aali's custom Graphics Driver..

If you could show me some pics or send it to me thru PM..I can manage to help ya more...

Could Ya show what pops out everytime it doesn't run? Error message or something

Nope. If you're goin to play it in a media player you don't have to. But I suggest gettin the HD versions..Theyre mush more friendly

It would seem as FF7Music does not have any errors when this happens. Would it have something to do with setting fake_midi to true? If so, I have no idea where to go to change that.

Just so you know, the version I have is 0.7.1b

The fake_midi option in the driver .cfg simply means that the midis will not play.  So basically, if you use FF7Music, you can turn on fake_midi so that the midis won't play while your mp3s are playing

0.7 opengl driver

just remove # next to #music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp in the ff7_opengl.cfg file
that enables it once you remove the # so it looks like this
music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp instead of this
#music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp

Thanks. Now FF7Music works with Aali's OpenGL Driver.

Is it possible to have smooth music transitions, when FF7Music changes from one mp3 to the next or where it repeats the same one, it will start right away instead of having a delay?

Do PSF's have smooth transitions? If so, is it possible to cut a minipsf file into 2 minipsf files where the first has one portion of the music and the second has the second portion? I have searched and have only found that you can turn a minipsf into an mp3, but I haven't seen one where you can change it back.

Also, does anybody know of a cutting program that can cut an mp3 to the millisecond rather than to the second?

Ideally if you started with an MP3, you can use editors (expensive one like Adobe Audition, I am sure there are freeware ones) and then save the cut sound back to mp3.

The best way is to try and rip direct from Music OST CD if you own them.  But you shouldnt really hear much difference with a double loss, if the source MP3 is good and if you save to a good bitrate.

It is 100% impossible to save back to minipsf or PSF.  They are not streamed data like MP3 and their technology and implimentation are totally different.

It's just that, when I play FF7 with FF7Music going, whenever it attempts to loop a song, it tends to stop for a second or two at the end of each play through of the mp3. I am trying to figure out a countermeasure to this.

I have thought of an idea, but it would require to preload each mp3, which FF7Music does not allow right now. Basically, instead of FF7Music having 1 mp3 loaded at a time, it loads the 1st one, which is playing, and it loads the 2nd one in case it needs to loop. This should prevent the music from cutting out upon looping. Unfortunately, I have no control over the changes for FF7Music, nor can I create my own.

Right now it is...
Load mp3, play mp3, load mp3

My idea is...
Load mp3, play mp3, while playing mp3, preload the next mp3 to prepare for a loop.

Well... Seeing as Sony created PSF's, I would assume that it is possible to change various audio files into PSF, but we just don't know how to do so... Would be nice to be able to copy, cut and recreate a PSF file though.

Quite frankly I don't know how FF7Music is implemented but I do know that there is some buffer time (less than a second) when looping a track. There are many ways to counteract this, but they all entail editing the source code for FF7Music (or completely making a new version).

BTW Torazo, a lot of your questions have already been addressed in this thread (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=5387.325).

Also, a .psf file is just a music file that was ripped from a PSX disc and re-encoded into the .psf format (by someone?), so you're half correct in stating that it was made by sony. The initial encoding was devised by sony and burned onto CD's, but the .psf file itself was made by someone who ripped them from those CD's.

As I said, it is *Impossible* to change MP3 to PSF.  PSF are more like a midi file.  They are justa  collection of instruments and instructions being used by a plugin which emulates the sound programming of the playstation.

That thread helped me little, that is why I asked my own questions. If a question is not answered the way someone is looking for, then the question is not answered for them. I still needed more clarification regarding the few questions that I asked that were addressed.

As for the PSF files, I was talking about before it was ever ripped off of a CD. The person that ripped it just happened to call it PSF to help clarify what it was. It was originally placed on a PSX CD as a music file, which we now call a PSF today because of that ripper.

I highly doubt it is "Impossible"... They are stored as data on a computer just like mp3's. If you can change a psf into an mp3, it is possible to reverse that process, the only thing is, is that it might take a different program per mp3 to psf conversion.

These are completely off-topic though.

Does anybody know of a free program that can cut mp3's to the millisecond? I am looking around and I will be checking out Audacity. Audacity works. Only thing is, you cannot specifically tell it from what millisecond to start at.

Yes it can.  You need to zoom in on the track.  It can cut down to nanoseconds almost

Sony didn't create .psf files and there is no way you can recreate a .psf file from an mp3, it would be like trying to recreate a game from a recording of it.

You see, .psf is just a handy modular format for PSX machine code. The actual music player was ripped from the game, not just the samples or whatever.

probably Minoru Akao (although the specification was created by others at Sony, obviously)

It is just as Aali said, a proprietary like Midi file for PSX (with differences, that is just an analogy).  Instruments that get played at certain times.  If you search the PSX discs all you find is the instruments and the voices for Sephiroth one winged angel

@Torazo

You say you want to cut it to a millisecond?... one question though...

Is your PC capable enough to do that?...Because according to the site of Audacity it largely depends on the PC's speed to be able to determine exact timing of a single Mp3..Does it mean it needs amiable speed to endure countless times of reverse/forwarding of a song? And be able to tackle 100+ songs at once too?

I think that should be considered because thats how lags where found out in the first place...

Correct me if I'm wrong though...Coz I'm also just as curious as to the capability of this wonderful program....

I just tested it on Audacity and I don't seem to have any problems. I even tried going as far zoomed as possible and still no problems. I just wanted to get it as close as possible to a certain sound ending and I have done it on Windows Movie Maker on a worse computer.

I have no clue as to what you mean by "countless times of reverse/forwarding of a song" seeing as I am only playing the song forward from the point in which I place the line at in Audacity. As for 100+ songs at once, I am only playing 1 single song. Haven't tried playing multiple songs at once, if it can.

My main goal was to eliminate delays when mp3's changed over while using FF7Music... This is one way of making that gap smaller.

There are no .psf files on a PSX CD, .psf's are created by extracting the SPU code from a game and it's associated data.
I'm talking about the actual music player from the original game. That's what's contained in the psflib for FF7, along with the samples.
Highly experimental (.psf player for winamp) is just a stripped-down PSX emulator with just the CPU, RAM and SPU.

Ah ...Thats it you want to be as seamless as possible right?...well consider this...FFVII music is an outside source program to be exact right?

So by knowing this It means were practically using two programs at once.(Main Game and outside program) so would you think that might be the cause of your distress?

You cannot actually 100% emulate the songs timing on every Mp3 it needs to play. If you observe how FFVII Music works you'll see how it firsts plays the midi then finds its counterpart mp3.. So by actually doin that, it causes it to delay a bit ( mere 1 sec I noticed just now). But with using Audacity to cut the intervals..You can shorten it further and thats it.

Everything cannot be too perfect or else we wouldn't have APPLE or IBM or LINUX to begin with..

You're already playing it aren't ya? Some of the hard core gamers out there even consider buyin new PC's or install new parts just to play this Game..( Think of the dough they spent...Man. I wish I was Gates...)

So be content with it for now...But hey..I'm just tryin to help you out..No harm here..Peace out!

The music in CD-quality WAV would take up even more space than the movies do, well over 2GB. I don't care how much of a performance gain there is, it's hardly worth the tradeoff in my opinion.

You're right about that Covarr-senpai...hehe

I only play this game using a laptop and to put a 2gb worth of music..might as well go with the MP3's. The PSF are the only option after this... :-o

Although I would like that kind of "seamless-ness" I guess I'm better off finding new songs that fit..for example..Nahatma's Music Mod...It composes of mp3 remixes coming from different sources lke the OST, AC, CC, Voices of The Lifestream and many more. Thats where I get my solution to the Fanfare lag I got once..Instead of a lag a voice prompt is replaced to the lag...well sort of...then an upbeat version of FANFARE.MP3 plays... sounds cool though.

Hope ya try it ..Its posted right here in this forum..

Not to mention converting mp3 to wav is a lossy, time consuming process. I'm not even actually sure that it would eliminate the (>1 second) lag. Although if you want to test it out, Seifer, tell me how it works out.

If you can change a psf into an mp3, it is possible to reverse that process, the only thing is, is that it might take a different program per mp3 to psf conversion.

Postulate: If an entity can be changed from one state to another, an entity of the second state can be changed to the first.
Rebuttal: Even though a live person can be made dead, a dead person cannot be brought back to life.
More applicable rebuttal: Even though Midi and PSF tracks can be recorded and encoded as mp3, mp3's cannot be converted to MIDI or PSF.

There are so many reasons why that can't be done. Check out an explanation of how MIDI format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_Instrument_Digital_Interface) music works, read it thoroughly, then just keep in mind that PSF files work in some vaguely similar manner. Sorry if this is coming off as egotistical, it's just a peeve of mine when people state things that I can prove wrong... sometimes people do it just to mess with me  :-P.

But yeah, I'm not really sure why you need something to cut to an exact millisecond.... I'm pretty sure Audacity has a feature to do that, it's just tucked away somewhere, but quite frankly, if you zoom in far enough, then just cut the line wherever it seems to stop being horizontal, you'll get it to within the millisecond. Anything more than that isn't practical since there's already a <1 second delay that will be there regardless of how close you cut the track, so .002 ms more won't really be noticeable.

You cannot compare life and death to this because they just do not match.

So basically, a device would need to be able to read an mp3 and be able to turn it into event message signals or a device would have to be able to listen to the audio and mp3 creates and digitize it as event message signals... How is that impossible? It was done before, not from mp3's, but instruments and other things, and those can also be heard from an mp3 through your speakers, yet you guys say it is impossible.

If you still think it is impossible, try to think on what would be needed to make it possible. I already stated something that would be needed to make it possible, which means the possibility exists. Sure, it would probably be extremely difficult to make, but that doesn't make it impossible.

I don't want to argue this any further.

Not to mention converting mp3 to wav is a lossy, time consuming process.

It is actually *very fast* and there is no noticible drop in quality at all.   The decoder is going to a LOSSLESS format (uncompressed wave file @ 44100 Hz/16bit).

If you could get hold of the game OST Cd's, you would have total quality.

But the problem is, it takes so much space.  If you are desperate for accuracy and no lag with any set up, it is your option....

I could have this backwards but I recall the last time I tried that wav to mp3 was quick and mp3 to wav was slow.

EVEN IF you wrote a program that recognized notes and instruments and recomposed them into a midi type file, the way it sounds would vary based upon the playback drivers. It wouldn't be the same. not even close. You'd be converting music to notes. I'm saying a conversion is impossible because they aren't the same thing. MP3's are audio files, MIDIs and PSF's are basically digital notesheets. You can't convert oranges to carrots.

First off, of course the program would start off making it sound different, but that is where "Trial and Error" comes into play. That is how ALL programs come into play. After a lot of adjustments, I am certain someone could get it to sound pretty much identical. It's like how Instruments were originally used to create Midi's and PSF's. Those instruments probably sounded pretty identical to the playback of a midi or psf based off of how many sounds the midis and psfs could make. Imagine if those Instrument sounds actually came from an mp3 or another audio file and were modified into a midi/psf the same type of way an instrument was and the program used to convert those audio files actually made the midi/psf sound like the audio file used.

Data does not need to be the same thing in order to be converted into another format... Programs convert data the way they were programmed to. It is a completely different concept than your oranges and carrots.

Wouldnt it be alot easier to code the music player to loop back to a specific time index in the mp3 so that it sounded like it was continuous?

Yea.

I don't think many people would want to try to tackle a program that can alter midi's or psf's because there would probably be too much coding as well as trial and error to be done in order to get it working and even then it probably wouldn't work the way intended for quite a long time after.

Hey, sorry to but in since this conversation seems to be elsewhere but I'd like to offer up decently trimmed files of the remastered soundtrack.  I'm about 8/23 of the way there and I've been working all night, I'm going to bed then I'll finish in the morning (it's 4 am here  :-P).

I've been opening the files in audacity, trimming the beginning and end, then testing it in itunes on loop to make sure it sounds right.  If it doesn't I go back and change it until it does.
I've also got bombing mission sounding perfectly.  It's not a great deal to offer, but it saves people a lot of trouble in terms of getting things sounding right using this guide.  I, for one, like the remastered tracks and hate the gaps between loops.  Granted it's not perfect, but I'm pretty sure by the time I'm done it will be as close as I'm going to get.

I've also changed the ob track to the trimmed bombing mission one in the ff7music.ini.  I'd be happy to host this on megaupload when I'm done if I'm allowed (since it's not my work and all).

There still seems to be an issue with the buffer, about a half second but still noticeable.

Does anyone know settings in the in_mad.dll and out_wav.dll that make for smooth looping?

I know, the mp3s are as trimmed as they'll get.  Configurations that I'm not familiar with will have to be tinkered with to get it to sound perfect.
Not to mention that the loop is back to the beginning instead of a certain point in the song.  To make it right it would take a lot of research to find what loops to where when then the mp3s would also be much larger.

But hey, it's an improvement.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

It's more than a configuration issue, it's the implementation of FF7Music. I think torazo mentioned earlier that it should fetch the mp3 a second time, then queue it the instant it finishes. Bear in mind that Windows Media Player doesn't even do this.

@Torazo Haha, there's no getting through to you.. alright believe what you want to believe. I won't argue.  :-P

@sl1982 That's actually a decent idea. Of course, again, I've got no evidence that FF7Music doesn't already do that. You never know how something's going to actually work until you try it. Nothing ever happens instantaneously so there would likely still be a minor rewind time, but it might be insignificant, who knows?

Hi there,

I don't know what is causing this, but neither Midi plays (even not without FF7Music, see my other post) nor FF7Music with the OSTRemastered.
I thought, since Midi didn't work, I'll give this a try, as the quality is way better anyway.

I must say, I did exactly as it said in the tutorial.

This is what the log of FF7Music gives to me:

Covarr, I wanted to say Thank You for the amazing tutorial.  :-D

I have been trying to get FF7music to work for 2 days now.
I did it on a fresh install on Windows XP and followed your guide to the letter.

Also, I wanted to know if it would be safe to use a hi res avatar patch now that I got FF7music working.
I really don't want to mess it up after finally getting it to work so I would appreciate it if someone could fill me in.

Hi, Im new here.

First off, thanks for the detailed tutorial. But I cant for the life of me get it to work. I have followed the tut to the letter, still no luck. I only hear the Midi files.

Do i need a specific version of winamp installed to recognize those input and output libs? (i wouldnt even imagine needing any version of winamp installed)

I have looked thru the forums, and this patch really seems to be working like a charm for everyone else. I dont get it.
I am running 32bit XP SP3 Pro, i currently am running the 1.02 patch, saints high def patch, and the reunion patch. Would any of these conflict? I have yet to try to run the patch on a fresh install. but i was hoping anyone had issues getting this working as well.

I am using the correct plug in, no spaces in path to mp3s, tried compatibility of win98 for ff7.exe,

I am not using the aali custom driver tho, should i be? seemed like an extra.
(honestly, i have tried every step of this tut multiple times, and i consider myself a competent person!)

Any help is VERY much appreciated. Thank you

EDIT: I have tried it with WinAmp installed, set all of my audio files to associate with winamp, loaded the directory of my mp3's to winamp, i wasnt sure if any of this was necessary, but i went ahead and tried.

You don't need winamp installed.

I dunno about the reunion patch, but there's no reason you should be using thesaint's high resolution patch anymore. It's buggy, and there's nothing it does that Aali's driver doesn't do better.

Also, my tutorial relies on Aali's driver to mute the midi music, so it won't work without it.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: CCbiss on 2009-09-15 20:28:38
yeah, i figured aali's wasn't necessary. I am able to mute the midi, but of course i just get sound effects. Is there something i can try changing in the plug in configs? looking at the logs, it seems to be at least recognizing the mp3's. I dont know, im pretty lost.

THanks for the reply!

EDIT: I realized i read your post wrong. Sorry. Well, let me try aali's, i have a spare computer so ill try a fresh install with that. Ill post my results.

well i got it working:

Clean install (besides v1.02 patch) with aali's opengl driver, however only got it to work with the version 0.7.1bV2, the 0.7.1 didnt work for me. v2 can be found here: http://www.jsgameing.com/downloads/aali_files/ff7_opengl-0.7.1bv2.zip

However, this seems very buggy, perhaps its the fact that im testing it on a poorly spec'd laptop. But i have about a 2 second lag in between new tracks (going from world map to a town)

Also, sometimes two mp3's will play on top of eachother(again, going from world map to a town) Im not sure if there has been a resolution to this, i apologize if there is (im new to this, obviously).

Covarr, you said something about about aali's being better than the saints. How is this really? i cant even adjust resolution (i go in the config, set it to ex. 1280x960, and it doesnt change anything, I also set fps indicator to "yes" which never showed up. Do i need to re register the registry file? (i have been doing so, just curious if this is a needed step) All i did was extract the files from aali,s to my install dir, and run the reg (changing the config to as well)

Anyway, thanks a ton for the support on this, I know everyone is grateful.

hrm...lag between tracks in general is normal. click here (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8840.0) for a guide on how to get rid of the lag time

That's odd, only explanation I can give you on this one is that ff7music has multiple instances running.

You are right about the multiple instances running, I noticed that when trying later. Which is also kinda strange; even if i properly shut the game down via the menu, i have to manually end the ff7.exe process. Not a major issue, just pointing it out.

Anyway, thanks again for all the help. Ill look into the resolution issue (i realized this laptops' max resolution is 1024x768 :P, most likely part of the reason, although i did try setting it to my native resolution as well). All of you have been of great help! Ill update if i find a solution to the resolution thing, im going to try it on my desktop at home.

The Saint's patch causes issues with a few things not filling the screen properly.

If Aali's driver isn't adjusting your screen size, it's possible that you ran ff7config after running the .reg file, in which case you need to run it again, because FF7config makes Aali's driver not work right. I'm pretty sure you need to set it to use hardware rather than software in ff7config first though. Also, you MUST be using the 1.02 patch in order for Aali's driver to work properly.

How can I configure the ini file so that during a given sequence, it will randomly or sequentially pick between 2 or 3 songs? Becuase it would be really cool if I could have the game play some of the battle themes from different FF games with their accompanying fanfares. Thanks!
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: willis936 on 2009-11-14 14:32:44
I'm no expert in the inner-dynamics of ff7music but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have that feature.  You can choose which decoders you'd like to use for your music (mp3.dll is the best), your output decoder (wav.dll), you can change the settings for each of those, mess around with the buffers, make your own tracklists so different songs will replace the originals (I know I uploaded trimmed remastered OST files somewhere around here), specify where it should find your music files, and choose which songs you want it to loop and resume after it's cut off for another scene (like when you go to the world map and the strings start up, if you want it to always start at the beginning like that even though the original didn't do that, you can).

I don't think there's a solid list yet on which songs resume after they're cut off, but there are a few obvious ones like the main theme.  ff7music can be a hassle but it must've been hard to make and is a very cool asset to add to your mod collection.  Hopefully ficedula or someone else will take the source code and make a more unified design.

Just read the part where the thread doesn't support ultima edition--so I can't expect a reply to any of this. Thanks for the bundle anyway, (the first link is out btw, only the mirror works).

Alright, so, it's not the best first move on a forum, but I'm gonna skip the search function just this once because I've been doing it a LOT recently. This is the story:

I went through and followed all your steps twice, but with a few differences: The first time, I thought that you meant open the .ini when you said go to config, so I made all the changes to file paths and such through the .ini. That meant that when I opened the program and ran config, while I had set it to look in the right path it hadn't selected the mp3 file reader and thus it didn't work the first time. Then I tried installing the graphics driver from aali, which didn't work because I'm using a cd-cracked version, and so I had to reinstall in order to reset the graphics, (I think I could have done much more harm than good by tooling around in the registry).
This time around I did everything by the letter and used the config menu from the ff7music.exe, so it has selected the correct .dll s and I've also specified the song paths and midi player. I also retained the OstRE folder for the music, which I had originally unpacked from the four 1-disc folders the songs came in by cuting and pasting all the songs in one cd to the OstRE folder w/o making any changes to the file names, and I left any duplicates in the original folder. Now, when I run ff7, the cutscenes don't lose sound, (amazingly), but the original midi is still playing, (including battle music, Shinra music, fanfares, and I'm not sure what it's called, but it's the music you hear when you leave the first reactor and meet aeris). I would have praised you when I first started troubleshooting the volume cut-out, but now I REAALY like the improved scores you linked, (you bastard), and I'm wondering what went wrong. The file path for the OstRE folder is C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\FinalFantasyVII\OstRE; should there be underscores (_) or is that what you meant when you said don't have spaces?
-edit
Also, something that's rather wierd: I have a few saves of places where the sound would normally cut out that I got w/ a save anywhere hack, and right before the first mako reactor explodes the game loads up with just the siren, (and I could hear the cutscene sound and the blips afterwards); I checked this again and found that the original midi that plays throughout that entire opening mission restarted when I entered the battle, and when I exited it cut off again, along w/ the siren, and I only heard menu sfx and such.
-edit
Gar, I tried moving the ff7 folder up into C:, now I can't get your presets, (wtf no profiles or anything anymore). The .ini is the same as the default but config in ff7music.exe is ignoring it and says that there are no profiles and that the current path to get to itself is under the old C:\ProgramFiles(x86).........
-edit
Ok, the original ff7.exe didn't work, prolly f***ed up the registry; reinstalled again, ff7music got happy again and all the file paths are w/o spaces and such. Time to see if it works
-edit
Alright, well, I got it to have a certain problem I think I've seen: the music is working at least, but when I start a new game, the original midi plays until the time that the action-y music is supposed to start,(when the train comes to a rest), and thats when the new music starts, that is, it starts from the beginning of the little aeris segment, and the original action-y music had and is still playing...time to recheck config, maybe I messed something up. I'll also check this thread, as I think I saw something like this before.
-edit
Well, my having ultima edition might have something to do w/ it, I also see deleting midis and getting loopbe; looking to see if you aren't supposed to use loopbe anymore, (what was that missing 8th step?). <vista x64 btw

mkay, well, I'll come back with a different version, hopefully it'll work better; (wonder if loopbe was installed using windows installer...). Thanks for replyin anyway, got it to the point where I only had problems with it looping/resuming inconsistently, along w/ the buffering delay problem and for some reason the original 'oa' track still played, thus I was in the process of finding an mp3 splitter in order to have the correct opening sequence music, (otherwise it would loop from the beginning of the aeris segment). Be back in a jiffy. Btw, why do you have your current settings for resume exclude and such? As in why did you add the exeptions to looping/resuming in the config, (such as fanfare, (obvious), and others).

-edit
And yes, it was, (whew)....(loopbe)

  • Aali's driver doesn't work with Ultima Edition. Anything that I, or anybody else, can do to break compatibility with the Ultima Edition or other pirated copies of the game is a plus.

Interesting idea, I am curious as to what the differences with the original game and the ultima edition are so i could maybe make my installer not compatible with the ultima version.

I'd say that you'll want to check w/ aali on that; I have a feeling that there must be an .exe version checker, judging from the error message that I got.

Clarify:

When you say nothing happens, do you mean that it still plays the original midi music, or it plays nothing, or what?

Make sure you have in_mad.dll as your input plugin if you want to use your own MP3s, not in_psf.dll.

Have you followed the tutorial and gotten it playing either the remastered soundtrack or the PSF soundtrack? That's a good starting point, if you haven't, and you can put in your own custom music afterward fairly easily.

Yes, you do, (if you want to follow this thread). I'd say start askin around in aali's thread for problems w/ the graphics driver. If you don't get the mod package over there, you'd have to go and fumble your way to loopbe and go through catch 43-56 before you get it all working. Unless you have ultima edition, you're better off getting the patch from aali because of the support that comes w/ it. Now, I also found this site: http://savvygeek.com/2007/10/05/final-fantasy-vii-in-restored-glory/
and that might get you exactly where you want to go, but I haven't tried it yet and wouldn't know..

Either the remix album or the PSF album from zophar.net. If you're going to replace it with your own music anyway, I'd recommend the PSF soundtrack because it's a very small download, and good for testing if everything's working right.

That's exactly the same thing. Depending on where you got it, the filenames might be different from what the config file I put in the bundle was expecting, though, so you may need take that into consideration.

Hmm... A few things to check:
1. What OS are you running? You may need to mess around with compatibility modes.
2. Make sure you are running pretty much all involved software as administrator.
3. If you're still hearing the old music, that means that Aali's driver isn't muting it. Have you double checked that's installed correctly?
4. This might seem like a silly question, but you are running the game from the button in FF7Music, right? Just setting up FF7Music and then running the game as normal from the start menu won't actually work.

1st, I'm running vistax32
2nd, should i run all software involving ff7 as administrator?
3rd, how will i configure aalis driver?
4th and last, I tried running ff7 in ff7music. but i still hear that same old music.  :-(

FF7Music in XP mode (will automatically run as admin) and FF7.exe in Win98 mode.

Code: [Select]
# ff7_opengl config file

# use shaders, if available and supported
# turn shaders off to use the OpenGL 1.1 backend
use_shaders = yes

# plugins
# a movie plugin is required, the music plugin is optional, but required to make FF7Music work
movie_plugin = plugins/ffmpeg_movies.fgp
music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp

# vertex and fragment shaders
vert_source = shaders/main.vert
frag_source = shaders/main.frag

# post-processing shader, used to apply fullscreen effects
post_source = shaders/bloom2.post
enable_postprocessing = no

# display frames per second counter in upper right corner
show_fps = no

# display some real-time debug information
show_stats = no

# set the window size (and fullscreen resolution) of FF7
# 0 means use original resolution (whatever ff7.exe provides)
# preserve_aspect adds black borders as needed to preserve a 4:3 aspect ratio
window_size_x = 1280
window_size_y = 960
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = no

# prevent glitches due to rounding errors by rendering in the nearest (larger, if supported)
# multiple of the original resolution and up/down-scaling
prevent_rounding_errors = yes

# check your driver settings if this option doesn't seem to work
enable_vsync = yes

# limit snowboard, coaster and highway minigames to refresh rate / 2, i.e. 30fps for a 60hz display mode
# vsync must be enabled and working for this to have any effect
minigame_framelimiter = on

# same thing, but for the battle swirl
battleswirl_framelimiter = off

# replace FF7's default framelimiter timer source
use_new_timer = yes

# use a more stable (but less accurate) timer to control FF7's framelimiter
# this option has no effect unless the use_new_timer option is on
use_stable_timer = no

# allow FF7 to use linear filtering for its textures
# some things look slightly better with this option on, but alot of textures just lose their detail
linear_filter = off

# read files directly instead of using LGP archives
# this option requires you to have all your LGP archives unpacked in direct/, with one folder for each archive
# for example; if FF7 is looking for aaab.rsd in char.lgp, this option will make it open direct/char/aaab.rsd instead
# this option should be used for testing only, performance will take a hit
direct_mode = off

just copy and paste that after changing the following lines

Code: [Select]
window_size_x = 1280
window_size_y = 960
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = no

to whatever you want (X is width Y is height)

that will mute your midi and allow FF7Music to run correctly

Hi all. I'm having some serious problems with FF7Music and I don't see too many people with the same problem. I installed using the original PC CDs and then applied the Remix 2.4 patch.
I really like a lot of what was changed, but I wanted to stick with the original PSX music.

I set FF7Music to play these mp3s, and they are playing perfectly, so its not a problem with either the mp3 plugin or directories having spaces or anything like that.
The strange thing is, no matter what I do, the original midi files that came with the game still play.
They play even after I completely delete midi.lgp from the data folder! And I even tried using Nero's enhanced midi.lgp which mutes the midi internally. THE MIDIS STILL PLAY!
So now every time I play, I hear both the mp3s I wanted to play, as well as the midi that came with the PC version.
I am using Windows 7 x64, and there are no operating system level midi volume control or enable/disable options, but I have FF7Music set to Mute Midi if playing a replacement file, which it clearly is.

What in tartar sauce is going on?

Edit: Problem Solved. For all of you who got FF7Music working but can't get midi to silence (without using the in-game music volume controls which also mutes the SFX for some reason):
1) Run regedit.exe
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Midi
3) Change MusicVolume to 0.

You will find that after this, going into the game and turning up the music volume will give you your SFX while still keeping the music muted!

Thanks anyways, guys! ^^

Remix 2.4 comes with Aali driver and FF7Music preinstalled, with the .cfg file already modified to run FF7music.lgp (double-checked several times), so Step 7 was taken care of. For some reason, Aali's still wasn't muting the midi.

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2009-12-10 01:59:51
A few things. FF7Music can't (as far as I know) use two plugins at once. So you're going to have to use ONLY your minipsf files or ONLY your MP3 files, and select the correct plugin accordingly. Also, FF7Music has problems with directories with spaces in the path. So, for example, right now you have them in "C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\FicedulaFF7Mp3\" you might want to put your music in "C:\FF7Music" instead.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

you use in_mad.dll for MP3s and in_PSF.dll for psf.

Err, FF7Music will use any input plugins from the same directory. Using both MP3's and psf's is certainly possible, I've been doing it all the time.

Oh, then I am mistaken. Ignore that bit that I said before.

However, you absolutely should NOT keep your MP3s in a directory with spaces in it. Some people have been able to get it to work, and some haven't, but FF7Music is really finicky and this is the cause of most problems I've seen. Keep the program where it is, but put your songs elsewhere, such as C:\FF7Mp3\ and tell me if it works.

Sorry for not replying sooner, this thread got bumped back a few pages and I missed it.

If you hadn't tried the compatibility mode before, that suggests that you didn't read the tutorial on the first page very thoroughly, because it specifically says to do so.

Hey, I just ran through this guide, still one little problem:

When I'm in a certain area that's playing music, and I enter another area that uses the same music, the song restarts from the beginning again. For example, on the deck of the CargoShip to Costa Del Sol, it plays the "It's Hard To Stand On Both Feet" minipsf, but when I go to the lower level, it restarts "It's Hard To Stand On Both Feet" from the beginning.

Though I have found if I set the Resuming to "Always", there's a little hiccup in the sound when I go from the top level to the lower level, but when I go from the lower level to the top level, it starts from the beginning again.

Could you help me with this?

Oh. Alrighty, thank you.

Do you know if there are any blank audio drivers I could use to mute the MIDI in Windows 7? Because I was thinking of reverting back to an old verison of FF7Music, because I remember it working perfectly on my old computer a few years ago.

Yeah. The cause of the problem was that you weren't using my ini file, you were using a new one, so you would have needed to manually add the songs. So the bit of code I gave you was just copypasta'd from my own ini. :)

HOLY CRAP, I FOUND A MISTAKE IN MY BUNDLE.

Did you follow my tutorial exactly, and happen to hear Rufus' Welcoming Ceremony when you climbed the golden shiny wire of hope? Fear not! I have updated the zip file in my first post with a fixed ini that no longer has this problem.

Did you customize your ini some, and don't want to download a new version and have to remake your changes? NO PROBLEM!!! You can fix your own ini, by finding the following line:

Code: [Select]
gun=FF7 211 Rufus' Welcoming Ceremony.minipsf
and replacing it with this:

Code: [Select]
gun=FF7 401 Shinra Army Wages a Full-Scale Attack.minipsf
VOILA! That's all there is to it! Now you can feel a little less  :x and a little more  :-D!

First of all, great guide!

Just wanted to add something I figured out. I run x64 Windows 7. If I try to run FF7 through FF7Music while Firefox 3.6 is open, it crashes. It works fine if Firefox isn't running, however. No idea what the clash is, but figured it might help anyone who is running into the same issue.

I have a problem guys. FF7Music stopped working here. It doesn't play the mp3s, and it doesn't mute the midi too. It's strange because it used to work, and I don't know what I did to. I use the one bundled in the Remix Patcher, but I tried this bundle too and it didn't change a thing.
I tried with a fresh 1.2 ff7.exe but it still doesn't work.
I really don't have a clue what the problem is.

Edit: I'm running windows 7 (32bits)

I see, well if the in game music isn't being muted, that means you probably uninstalled Aali's driver. Run FF7Opengl.reg in your ff7 folder to re-install it and keep in mind that every time you run FF7Config (with Aali's driver v0.7.3b and earlier) you'll uninstall it again.

As for FF7Music not working...are you sure you're running it properly? It doesn't start up by itself (if you're not using ff7remix), you have to run FF7Music in parallel with FF7 to have it work.

Erm, why is it trying to find the mp3's in your E: drive? Is that where they're supposed to be? Oh, and whenever you download another version of aali's driver, the midi mute option is going to be commented out by default. You have to go into the config file and un-comment that option (remove the '#') to turn it on.

Yes, my musics are on my E: drive (and I copied them on the C: driver later to see if it fixes anything).

I don't see the midi mute option in the config file, but I found this line
Code: [Select]
#music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgpI don't have ff7music.fgp, is it normal  ???

erm, uh, it should come with Aali's driver and be in your plugins folder... methinks you either didn't extract it properly or you just aren't looking hard enough, but yes, that's the right line delete the # and everything should be fine.

I'm unsure from the initial post.

If I follow the instructions do I need to download the mod and use my bought version of the soundtrack or does the modification have the soundtracks in it?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2010-04-20 01:06:00
This file DOES NOT include music files. It DOES include presets for Final Fantim's remastered version of the OST as well as the PSF version that can be found at zophar.net.

If you want it to sound just like the PSX version, I'd strongly recommend using the PSF files, they loop MUCH better than the CD soundtrack, and sounds about the same. It can be found here (http://www.zophar.net/music/psf/final-fantasy-7.html). The whole download is less than 1MB, so it's REALLY fast to download.

If you do want to use the CD soundtrack, or if you want to use any other custom music, you'll have to add the files to FF7Music manually.

I would have liked to put in a preset for the official OST, but there's no way to be sure what the files will be named when a person rips it themself, because different software will give it different filenames.

I've tried this wonderfull program. Here what happened, not good things  :P

First I've tried with remastered music, I've followed every single step of the tutorial. But when I've launched the game, the beginning movie music was the original midi (I selected the "mute midi" feature). Out of the train, when the real game begins, the remastered music has started, but it didn't work right. It stopped and restarted, and often seemed as "disturbed". Anyway, any theme played didn't last too much, it could restart in any moment.

Arriving to the boss battle with the scorpion in mako reactor, the beginning movie music started, it wasn't too good for the atmosphere! ;D

I stopped playing, I would have liked to try with psf music, but troubles weren't finished. Executing FF7Music, OstRE and another profile (not PSF) were vanished, and the paths for the two files "mad" and "wave" (sorry but I don't remember well their names, at the moment I've unistalled everything) had been resetted. But the worst thing is that if I tried to resume those paths where the file were (by clicking on the button near the file paths), the program simply quit.

Not even with a clean re-install of the game the problem stopped. This is the most surprising thing for me. Deleting everything and re-extracting the FF7Music files into FF7 folder hasn't worked! Everytime I do that, after launching FF7Music I see the resetted paths and OstRE/""the other one" profiles vanished. I have thought that some data was stored somewhere else (eg into system registry) but I haven't found anything.

I don't know what to do. Cannot find a solution.... someone help me!

No, I'm using Windows XP, I will try everything from the beginning but I fear the result'll be the same. In some way, even if I delete every FF7Music file and reextract it into FF7 folder, everything is still messed up.

First time you hear about this CHAOS? Any idea?

Well it seems was my fault, I'd mistakenly set FF7Music.exe to W98 compatibility

Everything now works fine, only one question: what is supposed to be played at the first boss battle with the robot scorpion? It starts the bombing mission theme, and I don't think it's the right track. Have I to modify some filenames?

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2010-06-05 02:38:34
It's been 100% for a while now. I may add screenshots in the future, but it should work just fine as is. I haven't been informed of any bugs in it in quite some time, and I've even used the tutorial myself on a fresh install of Windows with no problems. Only problems people have had lately have usually been due to missing a step or something similar.

There are still a few issues with using the Remastered soundtrack with the included ini (which I should probably edit a mention of into the first post), but they're all problems with FinalFanTim's soundtrack that can only be fixed by resplitting his MP3s (specifically, opening and bombing mission need to be split into two separate files).

Also:
Can a mod or admin replace the current FF7Music sticky with this thread? The old one is frankly outdated and incomplete and doesn't address all the problems Vista, 7, and x64 systems have, and it's tiring to dig out the link to this one whenever somebody has a problem.

tl;dr - Yes. For all intents and purposes, it's 100%.

Wow, I made some pretty stupid mistakes in there! Thanks!

The first post should have an updated copy of the bundle within a half hour.

edit: Why did you change the spaces in Fiddle De Chocobo to underscores? The filename has spaces.

Also, to answer your question about minipsf, that just means (AFAIK) that it's part of a collection. The idea behind the format is that the psflib file contains the instruments, and the minipsf files are essentially midis that use that instrument set. Full PSFs would have a much larger filesize, and offer no audible improvement; the only real advantage would be that they could be distributed individually without the psflib.

And I don't know where to find them.

Hi Covarr,

For some reason my FF7Music has stopped playing all music except for the Prelude.
I have never had problems with FF7Music before, and I don't know what has caused this.
I deleted it and started from scratch using your zip, but the problem remains...

Have you ever heard of this happening before?

The funny thing is, I just figured out how to get proper looping music to work in FF7Music, but I can only test it on the prelude lol. :(
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

Questions:

1. Are you using any mods other than FF7Music, or have you modified any of your game's files manually?
2. Have you tried using the PSF soundtrack?
3. Did you follow EVERY step of this tutorial?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

Ok so I just tried the game without FF7Music, and even that only plays the Prelude!
And on unmodified FF7...

So my problem isn't FF7Music related, but now I'm even more stumped...

Any ideas would be appreciated, this is driving me crazy.

The problem would be your music, it most likely has silence in the files before the music starts, edit them in Audacity.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2010-07-13 00:44:30
Sorry it took me so long to answer; I haven't been online much these past few days. You didn't say whether your problem was with MP3s or PSFs, so for the purposes of this response I'm going to assume you're using MP3s. I'm also going to assume you're using out_wave.dll as the tutorial suggests.

Firstly, play your MP3s any other MP3 player to make sure there's no silence at the start of the files. If there is, you'll have to edit it out using a program such as Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). I'm not experienced with Audacity, so I'm not going to explain how to do this, but you can probably find a decent tutorial with a quick Google search.

If your songs don't have silence in them, or if the delay you're hearing exceeds the length of this silence, here are some steps you can follow to minimize this problem.

Open FF7Music and click Configure.

In the Setup tab, make sure your input plugin is set to in_mad.dll, and click Configure.

In the Buffer tab, click on the Size dropdown menu and choose Small. The dropdown menu may be a bit finicky, so if you can't get it to work right, try pressing the S key on your keyboard. Click Apply.

Now, click the bottom Configure button.

Make sure that Prebuffer is set to 0 ms, and click OK.

Click Save and Exit and try running the game again. Hopefully, you won't have any more delay before songs start.

Are you running FF7Music in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2? Pretty sure that should fix it, tell me if it doesn't.

nope it didnt plus i can not find final fantasy seven in the registry and ive tried uninstalling ff7 and reinstalling nothing

i reinstalled ff7 to c:\ff7 rather then default location ff music still errors but keeps it settings i be testing to see if it works in game but still no ff7 in the registry so at mo can not copy the movie files over to the hard drive hopefully someone can help me cause i think thats also why open gl driver doesn't work in full screen either.

It should be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\
Though I'm not sure why you need to look in the registry, and I'm DEFINITELY not sure why it wouldn't be there. You're not using the Ultima Edition or something, are you?

Also, can you post the contents of your ff7music.ini for me to look at?

Hmm, that looks just fine, assuming that's where the input and output plugins actually are.

Are you using Aali's custom graphics driver? You need to edit the included ini file to mute the midi.

Based on you're ini, it's apparent you downloaded my bundle, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you are asking for help without having followed the tutorial thoroughly. Double check that you have followed EVERY step on page one of this thread, and tell me if you're still having problems.

ok i have followed the tutorial which is a good one i might add the only one i couldn't do was the comparability for ff7.exe cause every time i fired up by pressing the run ff7 button on ff7 music it just kept minimizing to the desktop took it off and it ran ok.

at the time i was testing i wasn't using the open gl driver which now i am same issue about muting the midi and the errors that come up in ff7 music but the main thing is its working now i can live with muting the midi and the errors as its working thanks for the help tho its been most appreciated.
i found it in the regestry in the end so if your running windows 7 x64 and can not find look in the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node

I've tried almost everything, and I'm still running into a minor (yet annoying problem). 50% of the time, ff7music will run perfectly when I start playing the game. However, it lags behind on the other 50%. Also, if it starts out running like it should, it eventually falls behind. The most noticeable is the fanfare after battles, then Field music becomes slow to load as well. I have the lessdebug patch installed, I've ran nearly every combination of compatibility modes for ff7.exe and ff7music, and I've tinkered around with all the settings. I have an Acer Aspire 5515 with a 1.6 GHz processor and an ATI Radeon X1200 chipset. I'm beginning to think my hardware isn't up to par, since the slow loading only occurs when using the Phoenix and Team Avalanche patches. The game itself runs perfectly, but maybe it's too much for my slow CPU to run ff7music along with ff7 patched?

Sorry for the long post, but this has been a problem for me for a long time, and nothing I've found on here has helped so far.

It probably is just that your machine is too slow, especially if it only happens with other patches/mods.

However, you could try this (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8493.msg144909#msg144909) and see if it helps.

It won't let me select "small" in the buffer tab. It only has "medium."  Any clue why this is?

Nevermind, got it ;). I'll see if this works now.

Alright, I've finally figured it out. I went to Config on the MAD plugin and, along with selecting "small" in the buffer tab, I set the Priority to Highest Priority in the General tab. So to anyone with a slower CPU, try this if you have problems with songs loading on time. I confirmed that having it set to Highest Priority is, indeed, the fix to my problem, as I have tested it with both Highest and Normal settings. The only slowdown in the game that I've noticed is literally half a second at most, and it's only apparent when the victory fanfare plays.

No, that's not the problem.

You probably installed FF7 in the Program Files directory, and are running Windows Vista or 7 with UAC, is my best guess. UAC prevents you from properly editing files in certain directories.

1. Find the file ff7_opengl.cfg in your FF7 install directory.
2. Move it to the desktop.
3. Right click it, choose open with, and click Notepad.
4. Find the line that says #music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp and remove the #
5. Move the file ff7_opengl.cfg back to your FF7 install directory.

If you follow these directions correctly, you absolutely won't have the original music overlapping in the background next time you run the game.

Somewhere around here is a tutorial I had made for FF7Music.   If you can find it, in there is a link to a midi.lgp where all the midi files are blank.  Use that instead.

That's odd. Anyway, here's two things you could try:

1. Use out_wave.dll instead of out_ds.dll if you aren't already. Completely bypass directsound, y'know?
2. Make sure your directx runtimes are up to date: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

Also, what sound driver are you using for FF7 itself? Check out ff7config to find out.

But once you have it working... it's the sweetest thing evar!!

Whenever I find a better mp3 of a song, I can plop it in the directory with the same name as the song it's replacing and it's good to go!

I may release a new mp3 set of songs that are much less in file size, but better/cooler sounding.

No offense to those who made the remaster soundtrack!
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: cecilkorik on 2010-08-26 22:11:07
Not really sure what's going on here, but when I run FF7music it... mostly works. Except sometimes it refuses to switch songs when switching areas, or insists on not playing anything. The files are all set up correctly -- it can play them sometimes. I've tried PSF and MP3s, both have the same problem. The problem isn't limited to certain songs. It can either refuse to switch, or refuse to play any song at any time, and then play that same song perfectly 10 seconds later.

For Example: I load my saved game (which is at the world map). 90% of the time, no music at all. just silence. The other 10%, it correctly plays the world map song.
Then I go into a random battle. Either it will play the battle music, or it will keep playing the world map music for the whole battle. The victory fanfare usually plays when I beat the enemies, but even that's not guaranteed. I go into a town, and maybe the town music starts playing, or maybe the world map music keeps playing. If I then immediately exit the town, the world map music has a chance to start playing again, or maybe it will keep playing the town music, or maybe I will get silence. It seems totally random.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Or is this just "normal" with FF7music? I've tried all the FF7music settings I can find, I've tried different versions of FF7music, I've tried running under every combination of compatability modes. There are no spaces in the path.

I am running Windows Vista 64, and FF7 1.02 with Aali's driver 0.7.8b with FF7music.fgp enabled. FF7music is version 1.51. I've even tried using LoopBe also but I don't think the Aali/FF7music combo needs to use midi at all, does it?

I can post my app.log/ff7music.log if it would help.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2010-08-26 23:31:18
This is absolutely not normal for FF7Music, but it's not a problem I've ever seen before. I honestly have no idea what could be going wrong. You could try installing FF7Music with this installer (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=10546.0), but based on your symptoms I doubt it would make a difference.

It seems like FF7Music isn't getting the info from the game that it needs, though if you're using Aali's driver and properly set up the ini to enable the music plugin, I can't imagine why this would happen.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial

Thanks for the quick reply. It's good to know this isn't normal, and I had looked around the forums looking for a similar problem and couldn't find anything.

I'm still not sure why it's doing this. I'm going to try doing a fresh install with a focus on following all the tutorials precisely. I will also give your installer a try, thanks! I'm beginning to wonder if I have some kind of hardware problem at this point, maybe I'll try a different computer as well...

Hi there, i've been looking around and noticed a few people have expressed issues with FF7 music not restarting the music tracks with scene changes, and specifically i've been having an issue where when i say exit the battle scene with the fanfare track playing, when it resumes on field no music resumes.

Though, i find if i go into the menu, it will then start playing the music. Is this some issue with the program not receiving the flags it needs to start up the music tracks, and or has there been any progress made in this or similar cases? after spending several hours searching i haven't discovered any definitive information on this issue.

Unfortunately, that sort of problem seems to show up at random, some people have it, some people don't, and I haven't been able to figure out why. I *think* it's the program's fault, in which case I can't do anything about it, but it's possible I'm wrong and a small reconfiguration can help. I really don't know, though.

Open ff7config and make sure the sound is set up right. This doesn't seem like a ff7music related problem, more likely you have the wrong device chosen in the Sound tab.

Just tried FF7Music for the first time, and it's working fine so far. Only one issue, and that's when the songs are supposed to fade-out (like right before the FMV of the first reactor blowing up plays). They just keep playing instead.

Also, the PSFs don't sound exactly like in the PSX. Is that normal?

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2010-12-12 03:53:04
Nothing that can be done with fade-out issues, it's a problem with FF7Music itself. As for PSFs not sounding exactly the same, it really should, since it's the music data taken straight FROM the game.

I downloaded the installer and it works great but I have one problem at the junon airport.

I understand that the Fade in/out option doesnt work, but when cloud climbs up the voltage tower to see the highwind for the first time, the music stops. Thats fine and wind sounds are played for a while. But when I go into the Soliders quarters the music doesnt restart. It keeps silent. And then when I go outside to the parade, the music is still missing. I saved a game file inside the Junon Airport (the soliders quarters) and the music plays fine. But as soon as I go back outside to the place with the highwind and the music turns off, it wont resume again. Is there any fix for this?

Thanks!

I am not familiar with this problem, but it sounds like it's a bug in FF7Music. I've not run into this myself, but I doubt there's anything that can be done to fix it short of modifying the program itself, something which I am not equipped to do.

Can you confirm that this doesnt happen in your game? I have tried my laptop now as well and the exact same problem proceeds I am using Aali's drivers. I have used 7.9 and 7.10b but there is no difference. I also am using the FMV restoration and I have even taken out the Highwind FMV and the elevator (lift outside) FMV to see if they affected anything. And still nothing? If you don't encounter this problem there is bound to be a solution on my side then, that I have not found. But if you do encounter the same bug then I there is nothing much I can do.

I've realised the FF7 music log starts each time with "Prevented from resuming". And thats exactly what is happening here, the program can Stop fine and play the Midi effect but can't resume the FF7 music again. Is there a way I can tweak this?

In ff7music, you can untick "Obey stops". This should prevent it from stopping there in the first place.

If you give me your save file, I'll be glad to check it for you and see if I have the same problem. Truth be told, I haven't played through the game start to finish in about three years, so I'm not surprised that I wouldn't have noticed this problem.

Thanks man! Here is the save file

http://www.mediafire.com/?hndhsvl0d6yttmk

The very first save file is the quickest. Once you load it, you will hear the "parade" music, once you go outside and jump on the lift you should hear the music turn off, then try to go back down the lift it will not resume.

The second save file (entitled Junon) is right before you climb the tower as well. Just in case you wanted to check that.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Covarr's New FF7Music Tutorial
Post by: Covarr on 2011-02-10 01:52:10
Hmm, I can definitely confirm that this problem exists for me as well, and I think I've tracked down the root of it by attempting the same area in the PSX version.

The "emulate ramps" feature in FF7Music simply does not work. For the most part what that means is that every song is stuck at whatever volume it starts at when it begins playing. Unfortunately, when this song tries to resume, it starts at zero volume, with the intent of fading in (it's supposed to fade out when you go up the elevator, rather than stopping suddenly, and fade back in when you go down again). However, since it can't fade properly, it stays at zero volume until you visit an area with a different song.

Unless Ficedula shows up with a fix, we will never see this area working properly in FF7Music. The best you can do is save after going down, and then quit and reopen your game, or not to use that elevator to begin with. It's not a good solution, but it's all I've got. Sorry :(

To be honest, I'm surprised it's taken this many years for someone to notice and point out this problem.

I saw this but given FF7music is that way for many things I didnt bother reporting it.  What is the use?  No author fixing it :)

maybe someone can take up the mantle. or one could contact Ficedula and ask to release an update.

Is the source code for FF7 music available? I should imagine that would be very helpful if Ficedula isn't going to update the program...

Nope, the source is nowhere to be found. I don't think he ever released it.

Talk to the guys working on FF7Voice.  IIRC they got dziugo and ficedula to give them the information needed for the new voice overs to be called during different parts of the game.

Maybe they have a better way to get in touch with them or maybe they even have the source.

Say, what? I have an entire thread dedicated to this problem... Never did solve it though  :x

Ok, so the ff7music doesn't have the preset midis and such in it, so i can't use a directory because the song profiles are all blank...

Blank profiles with the installer? Can't say I've seen or heard of that problem before.

If it was happening in the old bundle I made a few years ago, it probably means you're using Windows Vista or 7 and didn't set the compatibility mode properly.

So I need to set it to compatability Windows 98?

From the tutorial that came alongside the old bundle:

10. If you're using Windows XP or earlier, skip this step. Right click on FF7Music.exe and choose properties. In the compatibility tab, set it to run in Windows XP SP2 mode, and check "Run this program as an administrator".

Ya it's still not working, I am going to try the installer again and then turn off my virus protection for that portion.

You are sure the megaupload is clean right?

EDIT: SONOVABITCH, that damn virus protection turned itself back on...

I am getting pissed, I have been trying to resolve this issue since 12:00 PM and it's now 7:30 PM.

Seriously I have never had this many damn problems.

I am ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE there is no virus. As I said in the other thread, I know exactly why it says there is, because something I did has behavior similar to a virus (though used for a legitimate purpose in this case, other viruses use the same thing for less-than-pleasant reasons), and virus scanners with heuristic detection tend to assume it's a virus, even though they don't recognize it as any specific virus.

According to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan/report.html?id=a974972656dc8d97d09004ac96a337f2a3906849c6e85f9e5b6b080113a2fa66-1305512343)'s report on the particular file that generally shows up as a virus, only 7 out of 43 scanners even identify it as a virus, and of those the majority identify it either as generic (scanner doesn't recognize it, but thinks it's a virus) or Refroso (which happens to have some similar traits to one of the files in here). There is really no cause for concern.

The best advice I can give you is to use a better antivirus program. Just about every free AV software is better than Norton. In particular, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows users, as it has a smaller footprint and higher catch rate than other AV software.

Ok, so I installed Ficedula's FF7 music I started to configure the plugin files but it pops up with this message
"Access Violation at address 00044567 in module "ff7 music.exe." Read of address 00000028"
I tried downgrading winamp....to version 2.0 and it still says the same thing.
Help please??

Winamp version has nothing to do with it.

Did you install FF7Music from the tutorial in this thread, the installer in my other thread, or on its own? Also, what OS are you using?

Hmm. To be perfectly honest, I've never seen this error myself, and have had no trouble installing on either XP or 7, but you COULD try running in various compatibility modes. That might not work, but it's the best I can think of. It's also probably a good idea to make sure your audio drivers are up to date, but I don't really think that's it.

OK, so I decided to just reinstall and start from scratch, just to see what would happen, I downloaded the one you have in the tutorial, I followed the read-me exactly, when I start the game it says that the MIDI is playing successfully, but my music is not playing.
Could there be a reason for this?

You sure the music plugin is enabled in Aali's driver? That's an easy one to miss, and if you reinstalled or updated Aali's driver after following the tutorial you will need to re-enable it.

DataPath is C:\Program Files (x86)\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VIIficedula\
Init patches
Reading ini...
Parsing paths... -currently C:\Program Files (x86)\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VIIficedula\
.\

Don't know what's up with this, to be honest. The installer wouldn't install, so I tried this manual method instead. Now, it won't read the .ini file because it's not parsing its own path properly. It thinks it exists in a folder called "Final Fantasy VIIficedula"; it definitely doesn't. But I've come this far, and I'm not giving up now. Any tips?

(To be clear, FF7Music is currently in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula" and is set to run with Administrator priviledges and WinXP SP2 compatability.)

I'm guessing it's reading the registry to get FF7's path, assuming there's going to be a closing \ at the end of the string, and not adding it on its own. I explained this in more detail in the installer thread, I think it's exactly the same problem that prevented the installer from working. What bugs me is that I have no clue how this would happen, since it goes against what the ff7 installer has done in every case I've seen or tried.
