Completely Unrelated / Get Organized!
« on: 2007-10-23 23:34:53 »
Well I found a little application that may be useful to many here.  I'm sure plenty of you here have a big collection of DVDs, Books, Games, etc.  I found this little app a fun way to organize it all.

It uses the Amazon search, much like MediaMonkey, to create an entire library of all of your stuff.  If you have a webcam, you can even use that to scan the barcode to find the product info.  You can then edit the items in your library.  Say I let my friend borrow a book of mine.  I'll select the book, and I can make a record I gave friend x book y on z date.  I don't have Vista yet, so I'm without the games explorer.  Who needs it?  With this you can make a games collection, change the properties so when you press the "Play" button it can launch your game.  This is also perfect if you have plenty of eBooks, so when you press "Play" it can open the .pdf file, a virtual bookshelf it you will.  I would love this if it worked on Linux.  The developer said it may work with WINE, but hasn't been tested.  Give it a try, and tell me what you think of it.

Archive / Sephiroth Ablaze Video [Released]
« on: 2007-03-23 20:24:10 »
Here's another video release for those who enjoy FF7 PC.  I really think the improved video makes the dramatic scene even more powerful.  Simply follow the Movie Tweak documentation to get videos playing off your hard drive, instead of the CD.

Just replace this video with the original movie.  It uses the Indeo codec, so no tweaking like before, huh it's even a smaller file size.

Completely Unrelated / My European Friends...Sorry

Don't know what else to say but...that really bites.  It may come out good for the consumer since Sony is cutting production costs.  But will they cut the price?  If Sony's updates give better backwards compatability and soon, they can avoid a potential blunder.  Will they?  Look at their track record and decide for yourself I guess.

Completely Unrelated / NextGen DRM...Pshaw!!
« on: 2007-02-21 00:19:02 »
Well I'm sure we've already heard how Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have been cracked, per say.  It appears SlySoft is preparing support for HD-DVD in a new release of AnyDVD.  The BackupHDDVD tool required a key to decrypt each title.  Here's hoping this decryption from SlySoft is as easy to use as its current DVD method.  So what is everyone's opinion on this?  With cheap external PC compatible HD-DVD drives available, the adult film industry's backing, and now an apparent commerical decryption method, it appears HD has an advantage over Blu-Ray at this time.

Personally if I'm deciding on a next generation format, I want to control my content.  I like ripping numerous movies to my laptop or my PSP and having my media on the go.  I wouldn't want to compromise that at all.  I'm sure the guys at Microsoft and the others backing HD are upset over the development of this.  In a way I could see this as a positive for them.  Power users would certainly adopt HD over Blu-Ray for the reasons I had mentioned.  Locking content from the consumer seems like a futile measure.  Years of development for this DRM and for what?  Users have to buy a piece of software and its all unlocked, big deal.  If they wish to stop piracy, there needs to be a crackdown on the illegal distribution, not the decryption.

Then there is the adult films issue.  Industry analyst predicted years before the formats launched that whichever format was adopted by this industry would be the successor.  With this industry's sales exceeding nine billion dollars yearly, outselling Hollywood, its hard to argue the influence it carries.  With Sony apparently snubbing the industry, they appear to be shooting themselves in the foot.  They could be beaten out once again VHS vs Beta, MiniDisc vs Mp3, and now this.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what develops.

Anywho... what do you guys think?  Would any of the above mentioned sway your decision when you choose your next-gen format?  Have you already committed to one, and how has your experience been so far?  On your mark...get set...discuss!

General Discussion / Crisis Core TGS Trailer
« on: 2006-12-28 07:58:37 »
Well this has been around on the net for some time now, but this is the first dubbed one I've come across.  Here is a dubbed trailer to all my English speaking buddies at Qhimm.

General Warning:
This shows in-game footage along with cut-scenes, hinting at the storyline.  I think it creates more questions than answers any.  Anyway, there is your official spoiler alert.

Just wondering if anyone has checked out the GamePark GP2X-F100

Link

Ever since I got my PSP, sure I've enjoyed it, but I hate Sony's limitations with it.  I have loads of old console games... loads!  I still have Knight Rider for my Atari lying around somewhere.  So what if I want to go retro and take it on the road?  I completely understand them wanting to stop PSP emulation...duh.  But I have classic games on my Genesis and SNES I'd like to have with me on the go.  Well, enough of my bitching about Sony's limitations.

The GamePark has already released its source code for its media player and a SDK.  Users have already created emulators for the SNES, Genesis, MAME, Atari, ScummVM and more.  The device uses SD cards for data storage.  You can even plug it into a TV to playback a Xvid or DivX file.  Some reviews I have seen have a gripe with the build quality of the product.  This is making me want to wait for possibly a revision or newer model alltogether.  I just wanted to see if anyone had this product and their impressions of it.  If you don't have it, please share your opinions on it.  :-)

Hey everybody!  I was just checking if someone could upload a FF7 save point where the party first leaves midgar.  I wanted to test out a little something I've been working on.  Anyone that might have one can post it here or shoot me an email.  Thanks to any and everybody that can help me out.  :-)

Archive / Advent Children Cloud Head Model [WIP]
« on: 2006-08-26 08:44:37 »
If everyone hasn't checked out Reunion's PCreator program, then where have you been?!  :-)  Well I thought I'd try and create an updated Cloud head model.  It is still in its early stages, so please be kind.  He doesn't have hair yet, so consider him an elderly Cloud.  I plan on creating better higher-res eye textures, and if I have the patience, that complicated hair of his.  So far it is still in .3ds format.  Check out some screens

Let me know what you think.  I'm not a pro at model creation or texturing in any way.  If you like it, Cloud will be very happy.  If you call him ugly, he will be very sad:-D

Archive / [Release] Otokoshi's Videos
« on: 2006-08-03 03:51:19 »
I thought I would clean things up and place all my videos in one thread.  As I improve upon these videos or release new ones, this is where you can find them.  The posts following this one are from very helpful people that guided me in making these videos which I hope many can enjoy.  A big thank you to each of you.  Thanks for the heads up to the dead links.  Apparently these little videos used quite a bit of bandwidth from FileFront.  If this occurs again, please feel free to post so I can keep the links alive.

For any of these videos to work in-game, you must use the FF7 Movie Tweak.  Instructions can be found here, and are provided by EmperorSteele's great website.

Opening

This first video replaces the opening cinematic of Final Fantasy VII.  This uses the Indeo codec and should not require any tweaking like prior Xvid videos.  If the video does not play, you probably do not have the codec installed.  Google search "indeo codec" or "klite codec pack" and either should fix your problem.  Click the screenshot to download.

Sephiroth Ablaze

This video replaces the infamous Nibelhiem cinematic.  This uses the Indeo codec and should not require any tweaking like prior Xvid videos.  If the video does not play, you probably do not have the codec installed.  Google search "indeo codec" or "klite codec pack" and either should fix your problem.  Click the screenshot to download.

EDIT:
Removed FileFront links.

Completely Unrelated / PSP Advice
« on: 2006-07-18 03:59:42 »
Well, I'm taking the plunge.  I'm bored all the time at work and frankly they don't care if I surf the web, read a book, or listen to music, as long as my work is done.  So I figure I'll finally go pick up a PSP.  I can rip movies to it, bring along Mp3s, surf the web, and play games all while at work.  I've heard great things about it, but I've heard the screen is delicate and scratches easily.  I just wanted some of your guys opinons on the PSP in general and what accessories you have gotten for it.  Thanks in advance!

Archive / Yet Another Movie Enhancement Topic
« on: 2006-05-14 18:42:55 »
Well I did a forum search and I hadn't seen this posted prior.  I was having difficulty putting the PS3 Tech Demo as my "opening.avi."  I would always get those two soldiers floating in mid-air and the music would begin to play prematurely.  I noticed my PS1 movie I had converted before had a set frame rate of 15fps.  It was a quick fix with VirtualDub.

First select Video=>Frame Rate...

Next go down to the Frame Rate Conversion, select "Convert to fps:" and put 15.0 in the text box. (If you used the Source Rate Adjust that will screw up the video audio syncing)

Select Video=>Color Depth...
Change to 16bit

Don't forget to resize any .avi file to 320x224, easy to do with the appropriately named "resize" filter.

I used the .mov file from ign.com.  You can also remove the ign icon.  I used the "logo (1.7b2)" filter by Donald Graft.  I just made a black .bmp to cover it up.

Finally, I did some miscellaneous tweaking like post-processing and sharpen filters.

One advantage I found was that the new video could be as long as I wanted.  My new intro is only 1min 30sec, while the original was 1min 59sec and there wasn't any problems.

Unfortunately I couldn't remove the "tech demo for ps3" logo yet.  Thinking of just overlapping it with a different logo.  How does "Ultimate Qhimm Edition" sound?  :-)

If this has already been covered than sorry, just figured this could be useful to someone out there.

General Discussion / Shavings from the Rumor Mill
« on: 2006-03-22 23:15:58 »
Quote from: The Magic Box
- At the Shibuya Tsutaya Final Fantasy XII launch event, when Square Enix president Yoichi Wada was asked about the existence of a Final Fantasy VII remake on PS3, he smiled and mentioned that such remake is likely to happen with a large demand, but it is very difficult, the company is currently examining the possibilities.

I remembered a topic a few months ago mentioning the possibility of a remake.  Someone mentioned Square had a history of surprising its fans.  Once again, this guy isn't saying yes or no, but it is intriguing nonetheless.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / C/C++ Source Search
« on: 2006-03-12 21:26:14 »
A friend of mine, a much more talented programmer than I, showed me this link a while back.  Their server was down so I didn't see a point in posting it previously.  Now it's up and running.  Coding veterans may already be familiar with this resource.  I did a forum search for this and came up with zero hits.  I figured this might be of some help to fellow programmers for Final Fantasy related or unrelated coding.  It's a searchable database of open C/C++ source code.
