Don't change or move any files or folders.
I think he was confused by the same thing I was three years and six posts ago. I didn't expect to find such a directory tree and did not know why this texture pack seemed to be scattered throughout. I also tried to make a directory structure that made "logical" sense to me.

I was unaware that the folders are laid out as in the original lgp--not simply according to the category of textures in the folders.

The beauty of this is that every texture pack fits into the same directory tree, so it's easy to mix-and-match:

It would be better if you make a patcher for his driver.
This is a good time to bring up beat.

Some users here crossover with the SNES rom hacking scene and will be familiar with the tool.
It's known for rom patching, but it can be used on any binary file to make patches.

I'd really like to make beat patches for some of the other modifications, which would be much more reliable to apply than what many of the installers are doing and it would even work in linux.

satsuki: Can you confirm that your change is in this patch (~38 bytes)?

I think the foul language is fine as it is and I am very reluctant to alter that.  It can easily go too far (but feel free to point out any alternate harsh words or even swear words that you feel fit a given situ, because I am not totally closed on it).  As for the cave, do you mean the one who sleeps?
Yeah, him. Specifically this line:
Code: [Select]
「ふん、じゃがワシが
 起きたとき会ったのも
 なにかの縁じゃわい。
 ほれ!」
Which I interpret as:
Code: [Select]
“Sh*t.
Me bein' awake and you here...
  Must be some kinda fate.”{NEW}
“Here!”
"ふん" is a fecal swear, but this case could also just be a sound. Although he doesn't curse elsewhere, his dialect is rough and I'm tempted to belive it's some thing like "Well sh*t..." or "Sh*t son," like an old miner might say.

I've created a small document on google drive for people who want to go through the maps and have their say on it.  All input by a Japanese speaker is greatly needed and appreciated.
I should probably update, if you've made changes since what I downloaded before. Sounds like you have.

edit: "Me bein' 'wake" is how I imagine his voice, but two apostrophes next to each other looks terrible.
edit: Just to avoid making the wrong impression: I know it would be impractical to post here about every particular adjustment. Until I have something to send back to you I'm only going to ask general questions--like how you feel about extra foul language--using examples as I come by them.

Sorry to be out of touch for a long time. Life happened.

Getting into the .txt files, now. The old man in the cave is more hostile in Japanse, and also sounds more like a geezer. How do you feel about additional foul language in the dialog? (only to match the original characterization of course)

It would not surprise me at all if NASA exposed the moon landing crews to huge amounts of radiation they didn't expect to find or weren't prepared to handle; then saw it as an opportunity to collect data on human exposure to outer-space radiation.

It would be interesting to see detailed medical reports of the crews' health in the years after the landings. In any case, I would bet a dollar they were indeed irradiated in some way and have suffered complications since.

Initial work layout.

I will send you the Japanese v English text later :)
Ready when you are!

Also, mind if I make notes on US (Midwestern Dialect) localization?

8
Funnily enough, CC still got it wrong.
That's not your responsibility to fix  (unless you want to do a full series retranslation after Reunion)

By the way, still looking foward to helping with this, but I need data!

I she birthed, then died....because Sephiroth is deep and narcissistic like that.

The thing she did immediately following giving birth to him was die. If, in English, that is better said "She died giving birth to me." That's fine.

sugu ni: "then," (sugu: soon) (ni: in the next moment) (immediately)

1. FF7 uses the Japanese symbol Hoshi for too many things (planet/star/land)
Because hoshi means both "star" and "celestial body". In translation, making the distinction between planet and star can be done by context: hoshi where things may live or singular hoshi = "planet"; hoshi that twinkles, burns, shines or is abundant = most likely "star";hoshi that isn't clear = probably "planet", "celestial body" to be safe.

3. Japanese is very funny on plurals
Technically speaking it doesn't have any.
Quote
To get around this issue, I will be using the term "Celestial Scream".
This actually sounds like the appropriate translation; not a compromise.

By the way, I picked up a used copy of the Japanese PSX game the other day (mostly because it was only ¥700). Can I extract the dialog from this somehow?

11
Everything is done now except installer mainly.
At this stage, do you think you could write up a batch script that does what the installer does (given all default/reccomended options)?

12
Slow: Full proof check.  Our text v Japanese.

I'd prefer the "slow" method (comparing both databases); I don't think it would actually take that long and it ensures the most completion in the least number of attempts. I'd only need to play scenes that require context to make sense. Not that I don't plan to play through R01 and R02 anyway, just that I'd rather not chance missing dialog in an optional  scene somewhere.

By the way, shouldn't the (R01) input configuration screen use playstation button icons?

13
As long as you put the files in the write place in the directory, you can mix and match any texture packs you want.

R01 covers a lot of textures, but not battle, field, magic and world textures.

You may even want to overwrite some Reunion textures with your own preferences (avatars, etc)

*The magic texture pack puts some files in the base directory and other files and subfolders in the Magic directory; this is intended.

Ah, now that's interesting.  If you want to help with this project, quequotion, then you are more than welcome.  A proof check of what we've done against the original Japanese would be great.  I'd certainly credit you for that.
Do you have a database of the extracted Japanese text online somewhere? I don't have a Japanese version of the game to extract it myself. I'd also need to see your (wip) translations of course :) (actually, I recall seeing a link to some WIP material in a spreadsheet somewhere in the forum...)
Because modifies the game engine so that there's automatically commas after spaces.
Good to know!
Google translate hehe
My favorite use of Google translate is actually it's romanization of Japanese; the translation isn't always so accurate and this bridges the gap between my speaking and reading levels.

15
Yup.  I am waiting for Luksy to get time and motivation.  We are around 2 hours away from full completion, but can't do a thing without input :)

Opening.avi can be downloaded for 24 hours HERE
It's still available! BIRTHDAY GET!

I know it wasn't intentional, but this is the best present I've gotten in years.

I feel like I've never even seen Midgar before.

19
Just checking, but are these textures subject to the same problem with (8-bit palleted? or was it pallet animated?) textures as FacePalmer's?

20
There will be, after R02 :)
About R02, what's it waiting for? Do you need Japanese help?

21
Any progress on this? I've been using xbr with higan and mednafen for some time now and been very impressed. Now that 5xBR is also out, I'd love to see what it can do for FF7!

There is no equivalent of a Japanese dialect... it's a unique dialect.
I don't mean linguistically equivalent, but culturally equivalent. Kansai-ben is associated with a certain stereotype in Japanese society (colloquial, old-fashioned, occasionally elegant, often comical); just as certain dialects of English are associated with stereotypes (short tour of US accents: Bronx, rough, good for starting fights; Texas, "100% American Grade A Accent", lots of foreigners think we all talk like this; Georgia colloquial, old-fashioned; Valley Girl, annoying; So-cal, laid-back; Midwestern, rural, neither rough nor elegant, etc).

I understand the game Japanese designers set up the character to speak Scottish in the English translation, but I still question if Scottish is really the best quirky-accent localization for Kansai-ben; I don't think they put much thought into this.

Keep in mind that when used in conjunction with Beacause, this won't be an issue at all. This particular line in the FMV is a bit awkward in Scots, but on the whole it's fairly obvious that it's Scottish.

Yeah, consistency will make this work; it just stood out because I haven't gotten far enough into (replaying, again) the game to meet Cait Sith since installing R01 and watched this video by itself.

I see... the (remote instructed, somewhat sentient) crowned cat riding a doll is... a Scotsman... Well, I don't hold DLPB, any of the other people involved in the re-translation, or even the original translator responsible for the ridiculousness of this character.

That aside, and I know this thread isn't really the place to beat this dead horse, but how does this phoneticization feel for people from the UK? Is it clear that he's speaking with a Scottish accent? Reading that line with US (mid-western) phonics, it sounds like Cait Sith has Down's Syndrome.

::EDIT:: Ok, Kansai-ben

Disregarding of what the Japanese team may have intended for the English translation (it is safe assume they had no more understanding of western culture than the original English translator had of Japanese), is Scottish a good equivalent for Kansai? Kansai is considered a colloquial, old-fashioned, somewhat elegant, country-folk accent; sometimes used for it's graceful (old-fashioned) phrasing and more often for comical effect (coloquial, country-folk) in contrast to the mostly urbanized (standardized) accent of the average Japanese. I could see Scottish as coloquial, and Gaelic is certainly old-fashioned, but I don't see it as comical or elegant like Kansai.

I feel like the Posh would have fit the character design much better than Scottish, even though he wasn't originally scripted in the the "equivalent" high-class Japanese (”吾輩はロボットである”)

Is this how he's supposed to talk?

Any progress on the other DVD FMVs?

Could we have a batch installer (non-gui) release as well this time?

In the past I've had trouble with your self-extracting installers in WINE.

The individual component installation tools seem to work fine, but the installer scripting them would fall apart.

It would be easier to work with a windows .bat that I could convert into a bash script.
