Title: FF7 Annoyances
Post by: gig4ls on 2007-05-02 16:51:34
Hi, I'm playing FFVII for the first time (after playing through the whole of FFIV, FFV, FFVIII and most of FFVI) and there are some things that just downright bug me about my PC FFVII that seem so weird to have made it into this game but not others.
The three problems:
1) Monsters seem to unerringly attack the person who I just revived with a phoenix down...regardless of how long I wait for their turns to be over and how quickly I choose to do a phoenix down/cure combo. This usually results in a wasted 1000 gil.
2) It is ridiculously hard to target the monster that you want to target. By this I mean that between certain views not allowing you to target backrows (like when I fight those russian dolls near the port city on the first disc) and the cursor targetting characters who move near the enemy to attack, this problem does not seem to be in any FF's prior to 7 or in FF8.
3) Movement in the 3d view (anywhere but the map essentially) is kind of haphazard, and up does not always mean up-left or up-right. I find that this happens in FF8 too, but it's slightly easier to deal with because it uses more than 4 directions.

These are the annoyances that I have identified, and here are my questions:
1) Is this specific to the PC version? (Or even my PC version?) This seems pretty ridiculous, although it does mean that I won't feel compelled to spend 1000 gil on an essentially useless item.
2&3) Is this specific to the PC version? It sounds like I just have to learn to deal with this, which is fine, I don't mind. Has anyone else experienced these and what are your thoughts?

Playing this game kind of reminds me of playing FF4...the interface annoys me but I have to get used to it to really experience the game.

Just play FFVII in a PSX Emulator, search in Google for this. Don't ask here to get copies of the PSX game or anything like that..please.

1) yeah that used to happen to me sometimes, so... just don't let the character die.
2) I've never had a problem targeting, maybe its something you just get used to.
3) Movement may feel a little weird at first but you'll quickly get used to it. I'm sure as far as movement is concened the ps1 & pc versions are the same.

2) Well I did have problem to target one of targeting at some place where it's hard to know which character you will give a cure or a phoenix down.  Haha but seriously, don't worry about money in this game.  You'll end up with plenty more you'll ever use :-D.  Beside, Those camera problems never happened to me before I had enough money to by any phoenix down or anything I would want hehe.

Well in battles you can fix the camera angle via the settings menu, this should help you target people.
As for the map, Hitting R2 usually gives you the over the top view, thats the one I use the most when I am chocobo hunting so I dont lose my perspective.

What I'm really annoyed in FF7 is the chocobo mating aspec.

I already got what is required to make the river(blue) chocobo. But still dont get it! It always ends up with another normal chocobo. >=(

Don't reset the game if it's a bad breed, it will reset the randomizer and you will get the same chocobo. (The randomizer isn't really random. It's a "random" sequence of 256 numbers (0-255), you can "loop" the sequencer and it will start with the same "random" sequence again.) If you reset, the pointer is just set back to where it was before the "random" event took place.

There is a way to make the sequence "jump", I don't remember the trick.

Yeah, the chocobo breeding's really annoying the hell out of me also.  The really annoying part is that I can't seem to get the game to spawn another Vlakrodos so I can get some more Carob Nuts, so I'm more or less stuck right now.

By the way, does anybody remember the exact PSX version controller setup as in "Ok=X, Cancel=circle," etc.?  I've just gotten a gamepad (I was using a JOYSTICK of all things before since the keyboard controls really confused me) and I was wondering so I could set up my gamepad the right way.

o = OK
x = cancel
triangle = menu
square = switch
L1 + R1 = run
pretty sure L2 and R2 were both target toggle in battle.
start = battle pause
select = battle info

doesn't the chocobo breeder up near the northern crater sell those for cheap?
