Cracking the event script
« on: 2003-11-25 20:49:49 »
Yo, er'body...I just found the main event script (no big whoop).  It' mag999_a.dat .  If anybody could maybe decipher how it works that's be great.  I just know that it was programmed by Shun Moriya and each event seems to be separated by

53 4D 4E 01 00 01 00 00 00 7F 00 FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF
53 48 55 4E 2E 4D 4F 52 49 59 41 00 FF FF FF FF
41 4B 41 4F 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
40 8E 0B 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 10 00
90 06

You'll see Shun Moriya and AKOA in this file at the starting positions

Skillster that looks like the PC Version because the PSX version doesn't have that file anywhere :)

Not to sound like the eternal pessimist here, but on what grounds do you claim that this is the main event script? (aside from the fact that the file has FF8's event script programmer's name in it). It's a large file, and it resides in the 'battle' folder, so it's more likely to have something to do with, oh I don't know, battles?

Anyway, I'm more curious to learn what those damn "AKAO" blocks are... they're present in more games that I can count on my fingers, and I've never found a good explanation on what they are...

Qhimm, Minoru AKAO was the sound programmer for FFVIII.

Yes, but what do those blocks do? They're found in tons of files, and there's no clear correlation between them and any sound data. Just a four-letter word that forms the name of a programmer isn't exactly telling what the data does ^_^

I'm guessing that whenever AKAO pops up that's where the call for sound events are.
