Remember that as soon as you get a working copy of the original game (legally), it's a good idea to make a backup of your discs, as the original discs can be old and scratched and not have much time left in terms of functionality.

It's also a good idea to put the original disks back into the case and display it on your mantle as your crowning jewel!  Also remember to keep track of how old the disks are... some disk can Rot over time.  Some people say CD's will last over 100 years easy but on the safe side I think your window could be anywhere from 5 to 70 years. I have my "use" copies in a binder that I should probably replace soon...  Make a Backup to your backups to your backups....

The single biggest feature I look forward to is that it will show compatibility between your mod selections. That will require some coordination with PitBrat though.

What if you rolled this project into the FF7 Workshop-ish idea... Have a site that has mod packages ready for dl and install.  Has comparisons and all that fun stuff.  You would need modder approval "Off Course" but it seems like there is a lot of talk and request for a better way to handle mods throughout the community.

General Discussion / Re: Aeris vs Aerith.
« on: 2013-08-14 15:31:33 »

One other thing is the fact that "Sephiroth" uses the "su" ending as well. Why is "Aeris" okay, but not "Sephiros" ? Both endings are pronounced the EXACT same way. There's also no "l" sound in Japanese and they just use "r" for it, so why can't her name be "Aelis"? :-D

It's safe to say they wanted the "th" sound, considering that's how loan words work in Japanese.

I also find it intriguing that you're happy with spelling her name the same way Japanese people pronounce it yet you don't like the Japanese pronunciation of Mako and instead use a different way of saying it  :P

Very interesting information about loanwords (I learned something today!).  How funny would it have been if they called him Sephiros.  SE-FEAR-OS it sounds like a good bud guy name, not as scary and Sephiroth but...

I think the mako thing was just one of those thing were that's how you said it when you were 14 so that's how you want to say it now.  You're right of course that it is incorrect.

I think I'm with DLPB on this one though that is just sounds more like a girls name when it's spelled Aeris but hey ho...

I can prove that the th is there.  It is there because, as the writers state in Ultimania (page 14 if I am not mistaken), the word Aerith comes from the English word Earth.

Nice find!  I concede to your point :-X.  However! I still like Aeris better... just like I will forever call people "Spoony bards", yell "Rally-ho" until my throat bleeds, consider Aeris and Tifa the "Midgals", Unleash my "Ungarmax" Limit Break upon my enemies and know the "This guy are sick"...

"Off course" you are right translation errors deserve correction but that's what makes them great.. imho...

"Do, what now?"

That doesn't change the fact that they wanted the th there.  The th sound and spelling do not exist in kana, so they do their best to approximate it for a Japanese audience.

Please site proof that they wanted the 'th' sound.  I find it hard to believe that they wanted a sound that is uncommon in their language.  It doesn't matter if you use Aeris or Aerith it still gets spelled out as エアリス or Earisu it doesn't matter if you use Aeris or Aerith the translation remains the same (check google translator yo!).  If your proof is that they have changed it in later translations is say ehhhh... The new translators probably didn't work with the original writers anyway.

At the end of the day I will always say Aeris and (May-ko) I agree Mah-ko sounds lame  :-D

I like the idea and if you need any help I would like to offer it.  I am a web developer, when not playing video games.  Are you planning on building it on a particular CMS or are you planning on using a one of the development frameworks to build something from scratch?

Also I hear you on the Photoshop conversion for a template... I work with several designers but it might take some convincing to get something done pro bono.  One thing you might consider for the design is buying one and modding it and/or using it until the project gets more traction.  Once you have more traction a designer might be more inclined to offer to do a pro bono re-design and if your using a CMS the conversion should be simple.  I had also thought about doing a similar project a few years ago but decided against it for the very reasons that have been mentioned on this thread.

You always run the risk of getting a cease and desist from Square-Enix with a site of this nature.  You post indicating access control based on the users role is definitely a good idea. One option you have to avoid it is make content access member only.  If you have some kind of validation process so the content is only available to registered users and not the public then you be better protected.  New users could only be invited by existing users kinda like demonoid used to be back in the day (before it got shut down, another thing I miss).  However, even this strategy might not work.  You could always have a user go rouge and report it to Square-Enix and give them their user account.

I still have my build stored on my hard drive from 2 years ago with the Hardcore mod (before it was fully debugged) and the character update mod, the battle system character update the new UI for the menu ohh and my favorite the music mod which I subbed in the orchestral versions of the music in OOOOOO so good!!!!!  Back then the best way to share your mod pack was via torrent.  But then you run into copy-right issues (and eventually viruses).  I still have my original PC version and install disks for this very reason...  Anyway reminiscing aside...  I think this is a great idea you just need to be careful is all.

The main reason I've always thought this is a good idea is because content is always so hard to find on a message board like this one.  You literally need to dig through hundreds of pages and posts to find what your looking for.  Granted most people on quimm consider this a good thing to a degree since it weeds out the "undedicated".

You need to remember that in Japanese there really isn't a "th" sound.... so personally I like Aeris better.

Releases / gjoerulv's "Hardcore" mod

Just got back from Va-cay looks like the tread got a little bumpy.

Yeah I know 'bout those bugs. They are fixed but not released yet. There were other bugs as well, and as far as I know, there shouldn't be anything left.

The biggest bug in the current release is on the phoenix boss. You kinda can't kill them lol.

When I say a boss like Hojo I mean an encounter that doesn't end after you've killed the 1st enemies. The hojo battle is actually 3 encounters ya know.

I'm glad the you got the bugs, as for the Phoenix boss good luck.  I will track down the list of tools you have on the first post.  I am new to modding the game but am a developer so should be able to pick it up quickly.

As for adding multi-encounter bosses that's even better than what I originally thought you were considering.  Despite some of the extreme ideas out there I think that even an "unbeatable" boss should have a weakness... you know unbeatable unless a particular condition is met, for example there are several items that you rarely receive at the gold saucer that serve no purpose.  You might give those items a purpose in these "unbeatable" battles.  Just an idea...

Releases / gjoerulv's "Hardcore" mod
« on: 2009-07-29 20:54:08 »
Hey new guy hear but I have been following your forum post for a few months and I thought it was dead when I was reading it last.  I was so happy to know this is still alive and going.  I was even more excited to find out you are considering adding new enemies (ultimate bosses to the game).

FFVII is hands down the best game I have ever played.  Lots of good memories and every time I play it I get more out of it.

I am soooo glad you made this mod last time I played it I was maxed out LVL 99  went to the final boss and was completely let down  .  I am using other mods with this one and have a made an installation instruction guide based on a torrent I found (I own the game just torrented the mod collection don't worry)  If anyone would like a copy of the instructions let me know.

Right now I am on disk two huge material quest and am having trouble with those damn 1st Class Soldiers at Corel, but don't give me hints I love the challenge(gonna try confuse all next).

I found a couple of problems along the way:
1. One of the random enemy groups outside Gongaga (sp) with with the earth/based, berserk casting thing (sorry it's been a while and I forgot the name) places one of the enemies right in front Cloud.  Not sure this is happening I think I have a current version of the your mod (I think) , it might also be becasue of the other mods I have installed.
2. The battle with Jenova-Death gets messed-up if you start using reflect or mighty guard I'm not sure which.  It seems like the damage order get messed up, it was very strange...  When he hits you it forms a barrier on you?  Is this intended, I am pretty sure that you didn't want the enemy to put good status things on you?  Also his fire based attacks are no longer fire based (red light I think) the only one that was still fire based was magic breath also unsure if this was intentional.

Again congratulations on the great work!  I know you be out of town until the 17th enjoy your VA K.

Ideas for new bosses:

I really like your idea of adding a Hojo-like boss.  I really think that you should put him or something else in Midgar only available after 3rd disk, it would be an outstanding place to hide an "unbeatable".  Something like a a non-Jenova (because the reunion already happened) Hojo clone born from an extreme Mako bath or something bad-ass like that.  I'm not sure where exactly yet once I get back inside I'll give you some ideas.

I had another idea but it's gone... I'll post again when I remember.
