Hey this is incredibly awesome... how hard does it take to create a new FF7 model from scratch?

Well I can't tell you how long it takes to makes a Final Fantasy VII model from scratch, I've never done it before! I guess I'll find out.

The boots took longer to make than the basic body design.

Scale Model Reference

This is the only thing I used at all. I'm in Art College, I haven't studied 3D models yet, but I'm doing this for real because that's what the pro's do!

If I used a blank template that would mean I haven't done anything yet. I'm making this from scratch. Completely from scratch!

Oi! Darn, My computer shut down when the power went out and I lost about a weeks worth of work. Luckily I saved it at a check point, I'm not as far as I was before the file got currupted. But here's what I have so far, it's not much, but the colors starting to make it come together better.

Man, and I lost all the muscle lines and allot of texture map skinning work. And the face I was starting to sculpt is gone. Darn! But I know what I'm doing and I'll be able to do it again, and do it even better!

Yes, I will release this!

Send you the belt and boots? What I did was use photo shop to make better textures, the model's more or less got all the detail you need, maybe you can learn model texturing techniques by finding some faqs. I learned from reading faqs. Texturing I learned from the tutorial files found in 3dsmax! I wouldn't be doing my job if I did it for you! You can do it, like I always say "If you keep pounding your head against the wall you'll eventually break through" I was able to learn most of this stuff by myself, you can do it too!

I actually just finished Crisis Core and have been on a Final Fantasy kick since, almost as much as when I finished XII and had to replay 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 back to back to restore my faith in the series.  It's really cool to see people doing this sort of stuff; it's filling my head with ideas of completely redoing the 3d elements of FF7 with updated textures, higher poly counts, taking the maybe-remake into our own (the fans) hands.

Anyway, great work apz, I stumbled upon your last thread through NeoCloudstrife's recent thread, awesome work.  I can't wait to see what you can do with this.

Well, since reconfiguring the muscle lines again is alittle depressing after loosing all my work... I started somewhere else. Here is the completed Shoulder Armor. This is the level of texture quality I'm going for, as much realism I can get away with and still put it in the old game.

update: I've decided to texture a few things before finishing my modeling. That's not the real way it'd be done, but I'm doing what gets me motivated faster! Here's what I just textured since I made this new reply.

some of you may be faster modelers, but I think I own the monopoly around here on texturing!  :-D

At this point I'm making all the textures separate, so they're slightly more highrez then they will be when I compile everything into the final one I'm going to release. The final will be one big texture 512x512, but I'll hang on to these separate ones for some cool poses. Trust me, when he's in the FFVIIPC you won't tell the difference!

4000x4000 won't work in the game, even with high resolution patch.

And Apz freak, thumbs up mate, no one can beat you in texturing  8-)

Whats the suggested texture size for the entire charactre in game? assuming you use one square map for the entire character (is it okay to use more than one?).

128x128
256x256
512x512 ( the best imo )
768x768
512x1024

Let's put it this way, for my Kingdom Hearts modified Cloud, I used a 512x512 texture map, that's about as much detail as you need, any bigger and it wouldn't read in the small resolution of the game! The Buster Sword I made had a separate texture. Yes you can use more than one texture, but there's a limit and putting it all on one would make it much easier. Yes, use one square map!
