Final Fantasy VI
« on: 2010-03-03 20:58:00 »
I've never played this game, and to be honest, I don't really want to. But I do have a question about it, and it's one I think nobody will be able to answer.

So, Let me tell you all a pretty long story I don't think anyone will bother to read. Back about a year ago, Some guy added me on MSN. Clueless, I added him, and we talked about how he knew me for a few minutes. He said it was "some kingdom hearts website", which I assumed to be here. Anyway, long story slightly shortened, turned out he hacked my MSN and he proceeded to change the passwords to all my accounts, this one included. Before I was logged out, and my passwords were all changed to impossible to guess, random letters, he said something along the lines of "Go and be a Hero". Then he proceeded to spam each of my contacts with insults, and forwarded multiple racist emails to all my contacts.

As you can probably tell, I wasn't too happy with this at all. How I regained my accounts was a miracle that not even I really understand. I obviously immediately apologised to all my contacts, and blocked and deleted the person in question and cut myself off from ever hearing from him again, but I never forgot his name.

So, the other day, I was reminded of this person, and decided to go and speak with him.

If you're still following this, Let's see if you can come to the same conclusion I did.

Quote from: Me
I posted this on your youtube page, but it seems to have been deleted twice. Anyway, here we are.

Hello there, M0rtanius. Remember me?

...No, can't recall? Well, here's a little hint;
I'm a Hero.

Just remembered you earlier, and thought I'd pop in to express my disgust towards you.

That is all.

Perhaps you'll ignore this, too. To be honest, I don't even want a reply. Just know that I haven't forgotten what you tried to do to me. You make me sick.

Quote from: Him
Oh yea, you're the msn guy! Whats up?
Quote from: Me
Well, at least it seems I'm the only one you did it to, thank f***.

Are you proud of what you did? Seriously, that was really, really harsh.

Quote from: Him
No problem!

Thank god you remember me, I was under the impression that the whole internet is a bunch of soulless apathetic robots. Anyway, whats up?

Quote from: Me
Wow, you are a complete dick, I hope for your sake you aren't this way to friends or family.

But yeah, I didn't decide to message you for a friendly chat. But if you really want to chat, perhaps we could discuss the reasons behind why you felt the need to do what you did to me?

Granted, my password at the time was laughable at best, but that doesn't make your actions right.

Quote from: Him
Yea, I'm like Sephiroth. I ruin people's lives for seemingly no reason.

Right, Cut there. Now examine His youtube account for a few seconds, and then note my "Cloud Strife" alias, then see if you come to the same conclusion as me as to his real reasons behind this malicious attack. (Think Hermoor)

So my point is, and am I or am I not right in saying this, that any amount of Obsession with the game Final Fantasy VI dislike for fanboys has a strong positive correlation to Complete and utter Insanity? Personally, I don't even get what's wrong with being a fan of something.

At least, in my experience, I deem this to be the case. Is it just me, or am I right? I mean seriously. Completely insane, both of 'em. Yeah, It's only 2, but still...

Well, whatever, I guess FF6 isn't the real culprit here anyway. It's the hatred for "fanboys".

EDIT: What does fanboy even mean anyway. "A boy who is a fan"? Yeah, guess I'd call myself one of those.

I would assume that is a fairly fitting definition myself. However, most people attribute fanboy's to being nerds, and no-life wannabe's who look up to video game characters as if they were real people. Or obsess over the game in question. Which is why most people hate on FFVII "fanboy's" because they think they're better because they think we obsess over it and they don't.

FF6 does seem to have drawn the short straw when it comes to ridiculous fanboys. It has plenty of reasonable fans, of course (I remember having a debate with Tsetra which was perfectly civilised), but there are a massively disproportionate number who have a hatred of FF7 and anyone who likes it that borders on mental illness, and who react to any criticism of their game the way that Islamic extremists react to cartoons of Muhammad. I think that these fans spend about 12 hours a day on internet forums, which would explain why this cult classic often seems to be the most popular game in the series. It would seem that these fans love Kefka so much that they've taken on some of his personality traits ;D

However, wasn't Hermoor more of a FF9 fanboy? IIRC, he didn't say much about FF6. Maybe it isn't liking a specific game that correlates with batshit insanity, but hatred for FF7. Well, maybe it's hatred of any game to the extent that these people have that correlates with insanity, because only someone who has something seriously wrong with them feels that way about a game.

The thing about FF6 is that it had a small but significant following made up of very loyal fans who felt a strong emotional connection with the game, and they saw FF7 move to a different console and deviate greatly from the old FF formula whilst also having many strong similarities with its predecessor (which they call "stealing" from FF6; how they came to the conclusion that Square stole from themselves is anyone's guess, as is the question of why they single out FF7, when every FF game recycles material from every other), and then sell shitloads of copies whilst going mainstream in the Western world, something no JRPG had done before.

This leaves its fanbase open to a lot of fanboy tropes: there's the obvious jealousy over FF7's success, there's the belief that the company has sold out by becoming popular, which is connected to the belief that quality has suffered due to commercialisation (fans of popular bands who liked them before they were mainstream always seem to say that their earlier albums were the best), and the "oldfags vs newfags" trope; the small group of people who liked something when it was a niche interest will often see themselves as superior to the fans who joined when it became mainstream. The natural result of the sum of all these tropes and a little bit of reverse bandwagon jumping is the legion of more obnoxious FF6 fans bitching on the internet. The second paragraph of the ED article sums this up nicely ;D

You should play FF6, however. It's not the masterpiece that many people claim it to be, but it's the best of the 2D FF games.

That's just how some people get off.  /thread

If FF6 had a 3D remake done to it, it would likely have just as strong a following as FF7.  You should give it a shot at least.

Pretty much.

The thing about fanboys is that they commit the cardinal sin when discussing video games on the internet: they admit to liking something.

What you'll notice is that in many video game discussion forums, people spend all of their time talking about what they hate; you sometimes wonder why they're talking about games at all, if they hate them so much.

As a result, you can insult someone's favourite game as much as you want, and they won't care. But if you dare say that you like a game they hate, then all hell breaks loose.

I think a fanboy stands for the people that take a good movie/game they have played and turn it into their life. Like go to festivals dressing up as game characters etc. Collects all the toys and stuff...camps outside the cinema on the premiere day just to be first in. That is what a fanboy is, some people here probably are fanboys/girls. But who cares, this is a modding forum. Just doing it for the fun. Hermoor is wrong in saying that everyone here are fanboys or got no life. Maybe some people here are, but not everyone. Anyway Final Fantasy 6 is a good game, though it's outdated graphically. And it will probably be hard for the younger audience that has grown up with 3d games to enjoy a pixelated game.

It's quite something to jump to the conclusion this is FF6 related. The fact that he has performed hacks on FFIII doesn't actually tell us much. For a start, it's the usual place for ROM hackers to start with RPGs, because there's a wealth of tools for working on it. He also works on HL and Mario - likewise, there's lots of dev tools for both. I wouldn't make too much of the FF6 connection if I were you.

I agree with Bosola.  It seems more likely to me that he simply made the Sephiroth reference to mock you.

This doesn't look like an issue that will reach a resolution.  Just assume he is some chronic psychopath and stay out of touch with him.  Even if he did have some reason to do that to you, let's not credit him with recognition as a reasonable person on any level.

I dismissed the FF6 thing in the second post anyway :P (maybe I should have changed the thread title)
at any rate, we did resolve it, somewhat.

For anybody that cares, turns out he has the problem of regarding everybody as unrespectable until proven otherwise, because he's met a lot of people that made him lose faith in people in humanity, and I don't think it's possible for me to get the message through that his belief wrong, I've tried in like 3 messages now. However, as he's gotten to know me somewhat, through our conversation, he's apologised for hacking me in the first place, and said in respone to a question I asked that, if asked to give accounts back to a person who he hacked, he would have to judge what they're like before he decided, pointing out that he would of course give them back to me.

So, I don't think this guy is completely evil, but he's definately a damaged person.

IMO, fanboy =/= fangirl. Fangirls just squeal a lot. :P
