I've just got a Radeon VE (UBER! UBER! YES!) so I'll fire up 7/8 and see how they run...

Generally speaking it doesn't have the sheer performance of the GF2's but the quality of the output is *great*. Three simultaneous outputs (2 monitors & S-Video) is also good, the main reason why I bought it

In fact, most of the card's specs are like that - not quite as *fast* as a GF2, but more features.

It's cheaper than most GF2 MX's (at least here) and comes with DDR ram, so I'd say it's a good buy if you're looking to spend £70-£80. Comes with faaar too many cables and adaptors, but that's good  :) Also, doesn't need a fan, just a mega heatsink; not a major point, but nice (PC is damn near silent now).

For sheer performance a GeForce is the only real option, usually, though.

Voodoo5 5500 AGP

I run both FF PC games with 4xFSAA and they work beautifully. No problems whatsoever.

OK; the Radeon runs FF8 great. If you put FSAA on then it corrupts the 2d backgrounds in the field slightly, but you can turn it off (makes battles look great however).

As for FF7 - the drivers I got with it don't support 8-bit paletted textures. I suspect I just need to find some better drivers, rather than it being the Radeon can't do that.

I would go with a GeForce 3 if I was you. If I was your wallet I would say that a Readeon or a GeForce II GTS would work as well.

I have a Hercles GeForce II Pro. Not only is it damn fast but it has a very good Tv-Oout on it. It have served me well and it should be cheepish now.

I dunno,
my Geforce 2 GTS seems fine
Voodoo will have no more driver updates since Nvidia bought them?

wait for the "GeForce 3: Ultra" or something like that. If you can't wait, get a Geforce 2 Ultra, cuz it runs a lot of current games better than the GF3.

There wont be a GeForce 3 ultra unfortunately. No its not offcially conformed but traditional says there wont be.

Riva TNT:No Ultra
TNT 2:Ultra
GeForce:No Ultra(Except if you count the later released DDR version)
GeForce 2: Ultra
GeForce 3: ?????

See what I am getting at?
