General Discussion / Re: FF Pixel Remaster

Playing FFIV PR and it's pretty great. Looks amazing and the new music is a nice addition. The minimap is also fantastic because games with random encounters always give me anxiety lol.

They did nerf the difficulty by halving the exp required to level up, but that doesn't bother me too much. Sometimes it's nice to just play a game without being challenged all the time.

Are you referring to the Beacause retranslation from the Reunion mod? If so I would ask the mod's author if you haven't already. His discord server is here. http://ff7.live/index.html

3
The OST comes out in a few weeks, so I would wait until then to get some higher quality versions of the songs. It's not against the rules of the forum to use music from official OSTs, right?

Spoiler: show
And might I suggest an option to use Barret's version of the victory theme?  :P

It's not really relevant. Just wanted to share that lol.

You think FF7R has bad voice acting? Check out the Trials of Mana remake.

https://twitter.com/About20Donuts/status/1254170156583940096

It's still a great remake, but man is it low-budget.

Dunkey reviewed the game (link in spoiler tags)

https://youtu.be/8Qlf3b9wa4s

If you know Dunkey you'll see his final verdict coming. And it caused quite a stir among some gamers.

You know, aside from a few things like Roche and the Watchmen of Fate, I'm actually enjoying some of the new content they added to expand the story.

Spoiler: show
Visiting Jessie's house in the plate was pretty neat. And chapter 6 had a cool concept for a level, where you're directly underneath the plate suspended above the slums. The backgrounds in this game are really beautiful. And I heard good stuff about the Church and Wall Market portions of the game, even though I haven't gotten there yet.

I'm a little torn. When the game is accurate to the story I think it's very good stuff. But I know by the end the story is going to take the story in a very different direction, and it's concerning. Guess we just gotta wait and see.

I'm with a lot of other people here in saying that the story changes are making me scratch my head, particularly the stuff with Sephiroth and the ghosts. But I'm enjoying the actual game quite a bit. Combat is very fun. Even just walking around the slums and doing quests was kinda cool. I'm only on chapter 4 so I'm looking forward to what comes next.

This review of the “Remake” is spot on with everything that is presented. Make sure to support this guy and share your thoughts on the video. I wonder if the fan base all comes together to let Square know that this is NOT what we as fans wanted if they will cave and take all this stupid stuff out via a update or something and just go back to the original story? I think it’s a strong possibility honestly if the backlash is great enough.

Given what happened with Final Fantasy XV's story, an update isn't totally out of the realm of possibility. It's probably not gonna happen though. The best you could hope for is future Remake installments edging back towards the original story,

fern me, I shouldn't have read that. If it's true though, sounds dope as hell. I'm sure crybabies will still moan about it not being a 1:1 copy of the original though. Entertaining tears are sure to follow.

No offense.

This game will be interesting to say the least. I'm certainly morbidly curious.

And in a free society there's nothing wrong with it.

Agreed.

It's definitely a fetish. It even has a name (or a variant of it at least).

I found this video to be a pretty good explanation about the new combat system.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztySzIUICj0

Was interesting to watch. The KH3 part of the video was on point and most of what he says about FF15 is on point as well.

Death_Unites_Us was always one of the guys most skeptical of the Remake from what I could tell. Glad he's giving it a chance even if he still prefers the original.

a few quick things:

1. when climbing the pagoda, after the battle gorky says "but you handled yourself pretty good." should be "handled yourself pretty well."

2. this one is really nothing, some missing commas in vincent's line on the highwind: "Ancients... One day we may too be referred to in the same manner." should have commas before AND after the word too (at least in american english)

3. just noticed the epilepsy settings in options.ini, thats cool that you have settings there to limit flashes in the first place, but if I had epilepsy, and went to utilize that feature, I probably wouldn't appreciate being called a poor soul.  just throwing that out there

I feel like number 2 is a personal preference. I notice some people tend to use more commas than others. In this case I wouldn't say commas are exactly required. As long as you're not totally ignoring commas in your writing, you should be fine.

"along the lines of"

Does not mean

"use Qhimm stuff".

I'm not sure why you think it does?

Also, as numerous people keep repeating - nobody wanted a 1:1 update.  They wanted a graphical update, the style and gameplay keeping the same, but clear flaws like AI / bugs / bad translation to be resolved.  I never wanted this crap we've got here and I never did.  What we're getting isn't a remake - it's a total reboot.  And in parts just for a laugh.

Oh okay. I misunderstood.

Within 4 years we could have had an updated, glorious looking pre-rendered style FF7 with additions and changes along the lines of Qhimm mods.

You really think a multi-million dollar company like Square would use the mods on a tiny forum barely anybody knows about? If you're talking about inspiration or ideas, then yeah, maybe, but taking the actual mods and putting them in the game? Zero chance.

And remakes don't tend to use pre-rendered backgrounds. The Resident Evil remake did it, but that's the only example I can think of.

That's very untrue. Button-mashing will get you nowhere in KH unless you're playing on Easy difficulty. Critical Mode and even Proud Mode will force you to be strategic or get 2-shotted by even regular weak enemies.

This guy gets it.

You know, I had an inkling that the original post in that topic was bs, but I wanted very much so to be wrong. Guess I should've known better.

And I don't even disagree with him about the response to the coronavirus being overblown. A customer at my store didn't want to buy a pack of garlic today because it came from China. I understand people don't wanna die, but some of them are going crazy right now. But baiting people into giving generous advice about a serious topic like decent human beings, that I just don't get.

I don't really get the 'realism' complaint personally. Yes, the game does look a bit more 'realistic' than it used to, but does that not mean it can't have fantasy elements? Look at games like Uncharted and The Last of Us. They look like Hollywood films, but feature things like zombies and djinn monsters. And in Uncharted's case, a protagonist who can kill an army of trained gunmen by sheer luck. What about shows like The Walking Dead or most superhero films? It's silly, sure, but that comes with the territory in a lot of fiction.

I never saw Cloud's combos in the Remake and thought "What?! Cloud would never do that!" Partially because I know the dude is basically superhuman because of the Mako infused in him, and also because I know action games tend to make combos look flashy and strong so they're satisfying to play.

I do agree that the dialogue and battle banter is kind of cheesy and cringe-worthy, but after I while I'll probably get used to it.

And the plot point that it was actually Shinra that blew up the reactor doesn't exactly sit right with me either. It depends on what they'll do with it later in the game. But apparently it could've been implied that this happened in the original too because Jessie says the bomb's explosion was bigger than it should've been? I'm not sure either way.

I bought Chrono Trigger. After playing it for a while, I can say that the port is now fine after all the patches. Not great, it's not even that good (there's still a couple bugs I needed to work out), but it's serviceable. It's still Chrono Trigger, so it's still a great game.

The Guard Scorpion actually kicked my ass on Normal mode. This game doesn't seem to be pulling any punches with the difficulty, which is pretty exciting.

I wouldn't mind a PC port of Tactics so I could actually play the game on modern hardware. Hopefully one that doesn't suck, but with SE you never know.

You can speed up the game by 8x on the latest version of The Reunion, but that's the closest thing I'm aware of.

EDIT: Oh, and it also lets you skip FMVs.

FF14 is a very easy MMO to get into. It'll teach you everything you need to know to play well at a steady pace, and the playerbase is still pretty good. It's fun to play and the story is very enjoyable.

In fact, patch 5.3 (which should be out around this summer) should be making the main story quests a little less tedious, so if you're on the fence I would wait until that comes out.
