Here's my release of FF7 battle, world map and fields upscaled 4x.

I used mostly esrgan with some waifu prefilter for fields and world map.
I used mostly gigapixel for battles.

The main goal of this release is to get as much details as possible without oversharping nor overcleaning the files.
I wanted to get the rendering as natural and constant in quality as possible across the whole game.

The game have been done 3 time for bug hunting and optimisations, no bug reported (only the driver's ones but not related to this pack)
Some effect on some screens aren't filtered to avoid ingame animation bugs (ancnt2,blin68_2,datiao_8,jtempl,jtmpin2,trnad1,woa1,woa2,woa3)

I've also refiltered the videos files from french psx version, i've tried to find the best rendering possible, but on some videos the sources are so bad in quality that i had to do a strong filtering (feel free to test them ^^)

How to use the release:

for the main pack:
If you don't have a converted ff7 :
You need first need to have a converted 1998 version of ff7 (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=14047.0)
Then edit the file "ff7_opengl.cfg" of your ff7 install folder with notepad and find the "mod_path=" line, so you can set up your mod folder
Unpack the 7z file i provided (with 7-zip for exemple) and put all the extracted folders in the mod folder you set up, then play ff7

Unpack the 7z file i provided (with 7-zip for exemple) and put all the extracted folders in the mod folder you set up, then play ff7

I'll do it as soon as i'm home, but with 7-zip if the file is corrupted you can't do a full extraction properly

You mean in the world map ?
If it's in the world map, the aali driver don't do great with alpha channel on the effects so the flammes of the reactor of the highwind looks "solid" (i don't know if a better solution is possible)

As said Kaldarasha it's driver related.
I removed these bugged texture from my pack, i gess you just overwrited your old texture instead of deleting the olds one then copy.
Remove all your old field folder before copying my file ^^

The gold saucer is realy low quality in original game with lots of limited palette color use, so i needed to eavily filter to make it consistant with the other fields of the game.
If ff7 most of field are well upscaled with esrgan with realy low to no filter at all, but some of the files (mainly in the gold saucer, the blin and some isolated files) need realy eavy filter to not look too blocky.
Some of the worst fields to upscale was blin 1 to 3, most of the gold saucer, the kuro8, the colne2 ... i think about 90% of the game looking great with this pack, 7%/8% looking ok, and 2%/3% not as good as i want to (and i tried about 20 method/mixed layer/hand editing.. for those fields).
If you try the game and not some random screen you'll see it's better than scanlines (i tried lots of scanline and overlay stuff (i realy love using mame with the advanced crt shaders) while playing ff7 and i think my current pack is realy better)
But it's true than any upscale method will (one or more)
-Add artificial texture (that's mainly the way gigapixel works)
-Add false lines (can appens with some IA model)
-Looks like oil painting (mostly with some noise filtering method)
-Remove small details that your own eyes can "gess" from and untouched blocky source
-Shift more or less colors or alignment
-give a smooth or oversharped look (mostly with some noise filtering method)
-...
ATM no uspcale nor downscale will give a perfect look of the source, i tried to give the most constant and natural render to the game, i like my works, but anyone will have is own opinion, if you don't like it or another method looks better to your taste, just use your favorite method ^^

I've had this same issue but I also managed to do a pack and have this light layer work properly... not 100% sure how I did it at the time though... I'll be testing a new pack soon so I'll let you know if its working for me or not

I've had a look at them and honestly I'm not impressed.  The detail has been obliterated. I'm looking at the Gold Saucer fields at 1280 * 960 and the look is very plastic and smooth.  It's again traded one problem (blockiness) for another (super smooth).

My own solution using scanlines on the originals is actually better. 

I appreciate the monumental time and effort, but this isn't to my taste in any case.  Unless I am doing something wrong.

I do get what you are saying but overall I think satsuki's work looks amazing and is a huge improvement over the originals. This being said after doing some comparison shots with the pack i'm working on now, mine will lean a bit more towards the detail side and less smoothing/smudging/masking etc in comparison. As Satsuki said though the fields are inconsistent so having more detail in my pack will look better for some fields and worse for others. The early blins are really hard to make look good regardless. Its crazy how some of the original fields are beautifully painted and almost look lifelike (icedun) with detail and others are so low quality in comparison. When it was all downscaled it was harder to tell i guess.

I tested a PNG file which has no edits and was exactly the same as the source and it didn't work. So the pallet isn't the only problem but the PNG format itself.

Your scanline don't looks bad, do you use internal shader with aali driver or other method ?

One thing I noticed in the movie pack you did Satsuki is that a few of the videos use french. Anyways to get an english version. Ending2 for example.
Well i'm french so ,i've done the french videos (as i said in the first post "I've also refiltered the videos files from french psx version")
For the ending2 you just need to overwrite the french sur with english sub, for the jenova_e it need to be done from english version of the game.
For the ending2 it may need to be retranslated with the BEACAUSE retranslation project ?

I'll do the english videos file if needed but not for some time, i have a project to complete first (for the french version of ff7)

The part witch aren't released are : minigame, disc, game over, credits, magics, menu.
For the credits, disc, game over, and menu as it's eavily language related i won't do any release (the avalanche menu overhaul is great !)
For the magic i'm correcting the Kela51's one (not 100% done but he'll or i'll release the corrected version after that) : http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=18425.0
For the minigame i only have done small improvment over the waifu version in chocobo, condor and snowboard (i can post an updated version but it will be french only), you can use the Grimmy's english version : http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=16444.0

Some of those fields are really impressive.  It's a shame others need to have heavy filtering.
Yes, it' sad that ff7 si not constant in quality accross the game, the 2 main problems are that the downscale used by squaresoft in 1998 is not a good one and produice aliasing in original game desing and it's hard to upscale well, and the other one is the palette colors witch made some field a real mess to upscale without eavy filtering...

Could you tell me if in your mod folder you have a "battle" subflolder ?

There's 2 videos with subtitle, the Ending2.avi and the JENOVA_E.avi
If you have english subtitle then you don't use my vidéos ^^
have you extrated and replaced the existing video in your "\data\movies\" folder ?
Maybe some video have different name in english version too ?

Yes I have the battle folder, but in my installation there is also Reunion 05c 60fps mod and Mexico's hard mod.

SO maybe some bad configuration in another addon, because if the folder is here it must be used (you don't have 2 subfolders "..\battle\battle\" ?)

If there is some criticism that I could leave it's that the blacks in your FMVs are too bright. Maybe they need more contrast? Because your FMVs don't transition seamlessly from background to video.

If there is some criticism that I could leave it's that the blacks in your FMVs are too bright. Maybe they need more contrast? Because your FMVs don't transition seamlessly from background to video.
The constrast haven't be modified but the video player plugin's may work in it's own way.
Have you tried with the original videos ?

maybe, a tv range is typical 16-235 and a computer screen 0-255 but why the range would be différent in game screens and in videos ?

Well I didn't have this issue before. Original FMVs look fine and even Rumbahs FMVs work correctly too. And yeah my PC is connected to a TV. I'm no good at encoding stuff though. How do I change the video shader and which shader would be best?

Well, I actually tested for the right color space back then when I did the video files but I don't remember much as it's been a while :D
The shader to look for is the yuv.frag in the shader folder.

Actually I found two of these in my old folder so you could try both (should do the same, perhaps performance differences):

If both do not work because either ffmpeg does get the info wrong or the videos are not correctly signaled then one could hardcode the correct one in the shader.
And it depends on Aali's driver version, I think earlier ones always assumed full range, then it changed to (buggy?) detection.

Currently I'm running Remako, world textures and battle textures.

Originally I just wanted to replace Remako with yours but your mod goes quite a bit further than that. So what would you recommend? Should I deactivate Remako, world textures and battle textures and put your mod where Remako was?

Hmm, I'm going to try to make my own field only .iro file by taking that one apart and trying to put yours together the way it looks.. An .iro that lets you select what you want on and off would be a godsend, for this project, though..

Holy crap, taking apart the Remako, Ark, and OGfields .iro's I was able to figure out how to build one for your field alters alone, I now have your mod as a turn on and off option at the 7th Heaven menu; I even put one of the screenshots in for a preview, heh..

I'll work on your world map alters and battle alters later, for now I have the grimmy+ world and Avalanche battle mods & I mix the videos on my own without .iros..

What I realized by looking through all your folders was, the /char folder needs to be included in the field maps, so I added it and it's working so far, AMAZING, just saw another area with the /char folder in the field, (need to test a few more areas to be sure it's not conflicting with anything else I'm using, but nothing so far) and if you want the field only one, let me know..

PM'd you the link Satsuki, I was right, I only had enough bandwidth to get it to you, but it's all set, just click the link in my PM.

I made another .iro for battles for you. For some reason the .png's weren't showing up on 7th heaven, but nevermind, I fixed them.. Still, works as a standalone battle texture mod with a 'no change' and 'on' option.

Final iro build edit: uploaded world but, have not tested it.  All I did was take apart the World_Textures_2.0 .iro, added your updates and repackaged it exactly the same, JUST with your updates in the 'satsuki' folder which size comparison alone made clear it was being updated (when you go into the options you can choose your new updated world maps or the other choices, all still there), & a new screenshot from here, calling it World_Textures_2.2 as well.  It's staying up for you until bandwidth runs out, & I can only keep the trial bandwidth for a few days so, please grab all THREE PM links quickly..

They are active and are in the proper load order. But when I unpack each iro and then place the folders in the textures folder of 7th heaven, I see the mods working. When the iros are imported, shouldn't 7th heaven automatically process them and place them in the textures folder. It's always empty when I import the iro and place them in the mods folder. Which is the correct way? Manually by unpacking each iro or importing them through 7th Heaven and then put them in the correct order? Or do you do both. Thanks for any assistance.

No, .iro's only run during the game, period, must be activated, configured and set to on or off.

I manually unpack everything with the IRO creation tool, you may have to read up on any technical uses beyond basic unpacking and repacking, load order, et cetera.

If you want them to run manually, in the textures folder unpacked, you have to build a mod.xml code list, have you done that?

I don't do both.

I don't do the textures folder, either. I only build and pack my .iro's because of how easy they are to deal with.

Finally, if you're not seeing anything and have no other field mods applied, turned on or activated, you may have an improper install, as that was my last experience with 7th Heaven, before I made sure I had nothing remaining in the registry..

thanks for the response. I believe I have everything installed correctly. I'm using a few other mods like gameplay, and cheats, but no other texture mods besides spells. I imported the three iro's posted here. I then activated them and sorted them. Maybe that's where I am going wrong. What I don't understand is why when these iros are activated, the texture folder is empty. Only when I unpack each iro manually into the textures folder do I see the changes.

I'm sitting here with tons of mods from top to bottom of the load order on the FAQ, including four other field mods, all working, on & off with Satsuki's on & off respectfully.

I have nothing in my texture folder, ever, with everything activated, it doesn't work like that. The texture folder is there to build your own stuff from everything I've gathered.

Again, last time I got 7th heaven working, everything but field maps worked, I had to re-install after cleaning the registry, to get 2D field maps functional.

It might be your issue, it might not, but it's possible. 

However, the Reunion I do not use, so I have no idea if there might be a conflict there, either, as that's why I didn't use it, because they are still building it and NOT updating it for fixes right now..

Also, I never use Tweaks & Cheats, or Difficulty & Story either, so no idea on those and compatibility, either.

That could be possible. I'll try disabling Reunion to see if that's causing the texture mods to not work. Right now, I have the unpacked iros in the texture folder. Game looks beautiful. The only problem I'm seeing are the fonts and battle bars don't look right.

If you aren't using a mod, deactivate it to ensure it's not the cause of your issue.  You can deactivate without deleting ;)

Hmm, really odd issue I wasn't expecting. Your field's .iro breaks everytime I try to unpack it, and only unpacks about 1/3 of the total before stopping altogether, very strange..

I mean, it's working as is, fine, but I cannot alter it, or take it apart, at all.

EDIT: I got it, I just used the simulated dos app you did to upack and viola..

Alright, I only added one feature to the final edit by Satsuki, which I'm currently testing out for others to use (Char ONLY option tested and working so far with OGFields, Remako, & Ark)

The option only turns on just the /char folder, in case someone wants to use other field map mods which don't have any of these smoother /char folder edits..

Upscaling videos really is fairly straight forward.

Use ffmpeg to split the individual frames from a video
Optionally/depending on the source: remove compression artefacts with the batch method of your choice; Use ESRGAN/gigapixel to scale
Use ffmpeg to recombine audio and images.

Its very simple with ffmpeg:

   ffmpeg -i video.video $filename%03d.png -hide_banner (splitting)
   ESRGAN/gigapixel
   ffmpeg -framerate 30(or whatever you want) -i '%3d.png' -b:v 6393K video.mp4 (recombining to video)
   ffmpeg  -i video.mp4 -i audio.audio -shortest -c:v copy  videoplusaudio.mp4 (adding audio)

Theres an all in one script for esrgan video scaling too but its alot slower and limits your options to remove compression unless your have a proper interpolated  or trained model that can handle it and still give you statisfactory results on the scaling itself. Like ALOT slower. Ubearably slow!

I did, just scroll up and one page back. ;) You can even mix the fixes from Satsuki from his /char folder for the 3d parts of the 2d backgrounds, with any other field mod for the 2d backgrounds.

Ohhh, oh, I figured out what you meant, so I went ahead and combined the updates for satsuki into the community battle .iro & added the three files from satsuki missing from the new combination..

There is no community background field mod, but they are big files, and putting together .iro's too large can cause issues.. Another reminder, I work with a killer beast of a system, near 32GB of RAM free for code injection, so some may not even be able to run as many as I do. So putting them all together, I wouldn't suggest it.

However, test this to make sure it is working, I'm doing that now.

I've found that there are some issues with transparency in the world upscale. For example, the Chocobo's dust trail when it runs and the Highwind's exhaust smoke look weird in comparison to the original version. Everything else looks pretty good though!

No deadline for v4, need lots of time to get it where i want.
There's some realy low quality fields in ff7 but the worsts are probably the game_2, jtemplb and mtcrl_9

Hey guys! Big noob question here. I'm modding my game a bit for my first playthrough (late to the party, I know).
I'm trying to keep things as close to vanilla as possible while still improving them, So I'm using The Reunion r05c (Menu, retranslation and 60fps Battles), Mxster's Chibi Reconstruction V1.6, Bloodshot's FF7 Re-animated, 0.1 and Bynyl's FF7 Soundtrack Remake.

Is there any way i can use this mod without downgrading the game to the 98 version? I'm using the Steam version and this seems to be the only mod on my list that requires it.

I'm not sure that is possible, pretty sure it's necessary for both Reunion and 7th Heaven to be converted, but I'm new so I might be unaware of a workaround.

What is the particular reason you don't want to use the 98 version? I don't think there's any loss of quality or features (besides the quit menu option), if that's your concern.

My feedback I guess is same as DLPB's, most of everything looks awesome, but gold saucer seems odd, kinda blurry, I am guessing due to interpolation?

It due to the realy poor quality of source files the gold saucer and some other files are realy low in quality and upscale them is a choise between heavy noise + dithering or heavy filtering..
In the future v4, it'll be better (not going to do a miracle ^^' but will be better)
Check the sbwy4_5_0, maybe the lowest quality in original game, haven't found a way to process it ATM

V4 will be out in some time (in some days).
I'd like to do the 2 videos with subtitle in english too so the video pack will be finalised too.
So if someone can give me the ending english version of the subtitle (or if a retranslation exists for it ^^) with :
"text" "time or frame where the text starts" "time or frame where the text end"

Nevermind, i found an us version of the psx cds in one of my friend collection ^^
So in the V4 you'll have a full movies pack with the english subtitles ^^
