Support / FFVIII - Disabling the battle music in specific areas

Sorry if it's something simple to do but is there a way to stop the battle theme playing in certain areas so it instead just plays the field music? Say for example when in the Ragnarok fighting the Propagators the game keeps playing the same song instead of going to the boss theme each encounter.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / How do I edit damage formulas? [FFVIII]

I'm quite new to modding FFVIII and I'm curious about one thing. How would I exactly edit damage formulas for both party members and allies? In particular I'd like to make some magic spells more useful whilst also nerfing other attacks. I'm using HxD as my editor but admittedly don't know where I should start looking.
