Title: [FF8PC-Steam] Project Eden - dramatically improved backgrounds (v1.0)
Post by: Omzy on 2014-06-12 01:44:56
Project Eden v1.0
A collection of 4x-resized background textures for FFVIII.
These are the result of my field resizing batch script which I will release once it has been tested more. As this is a beta release, many textures have bugs that you will notice in-game. Some of these bugs are from the photoshop script, and some of the bugs are from Tonberry's hashing. Over time, as players point out these bugs, both will be refined until we are at 100% completion. Note that there may still be some bugs in Tonberry that may affect your gaming experience, potential crashes or lag during summons have been noted.

Pardon a few of these screenshots which may be missing lighting or other little things--they should look normal in-game, for the most part.

Download
Download the 1.3GB pack. Then, if there are other files that have been fixed, you can download those packs and apply them manually.
*If any of these links go dead, ask the community for a mirror.

Download: Project Eden (~1.3GB) (http://goo.gl/zT31mW)
Torrent: Project Eden (~1.3GB) (http://goo.gl/xJ8XVF) (Link down for now, anyone have mirror?)

Install
Requires the most updated version of Tonberry (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15291.0).

After downloading the big pack, you may download individual fixes and 'patch' the folders inside the big pack with the fix (copy&replace). Your directory structure should resemble this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Final Fantasy VIII\textures\(lots of folders). Refer to Tonberry's documentation for folder structures.

Feedback
-If you have trouble installing or getting files downloaded, post in this forum so that others can respond with help.
-Please document glitches in this format when you find them, and keep the running list posted in each new reply so we can see all of them in one spot.

Great! I posted my Tonberry release in the Tools section like an hour or 2 ago (before this thread) but it hasn't been approved by the forum moderator yet. I'll need lots of help with that project before this project.

Main post updated with release. Keep in mind this is a beta release, so expect to see bugs, especially since I'm releasing this and Tonberry at the same time. If you find fields that don't look right, please document them. Try to find the name of the field file by using PuPu or Deling. If there is a texture that has parts that look like the old version and not resized, that is a hashing error (Tonberry)--document it as such. If, however, there is a problem with the way the layers overlap, that is a Project Eden script error, document it as such. Let me know if you guys have problems with the download, I'll try to get a torrent going soon. Happy testing  :-D

Does this work with the Steam version?

Edit: It works with Steam version. Thank you Omzy, amazing work!

I guess we can notice a noticeable difference only if someone would re-create those backgrounds in a more detailed version. Work that's been done is still amazing though and I'm going to try them asap.

I made a gameplay video of FF8 buffed up with a bunch of Mods thanks to Omzy, Tonberry, and Project Eden!
I'm also using RaW and Tripod v1.1 as well as my as of yet unreleased text/menu/art upscale.

It looks amazing!!

I can't wait for magochocobo's mod!  I'm almost salivating.

Also - just noticed that the elevator on the first floor in balamb isn't being rendered properly... we're floating when we come down the tube into 1F.

Thanks for pointing those out. I think as testing goes on further, it will help to have glitches in a consistent format so I can fix entire lists of textures quickly instead of trying to hunt down what exactly is wrong where. If you don't mind the extra work, please document glitches in this format when you find them, and try to keep a running list in each new thread posted so we can see all of them in one spot. I'll go ahead and start it.

[Name of field file from PuPu/Deling] : [problem with Tonberry or Project Eden?] : [description of problem]

For example, the two that were mentioned:
bghall_3 or bghall3a: Project Eden glitch : black borders around water
bghall_4 or bghall4a : Project Eden glitch : wrong elevator layers

One with Tonberry hashing errors:
bcsaka_1 or bcsaka1a : Tonberry hashing error : flag animation is old texture

One with both Project Eden and Tonberry errors:
bgroad_4 : Tonberry hashing error: bushes on bottom are old texture
bgroad_4 : Project Eden glitch : white border around tree leaves

Running List (alphabetical, re-post this quote if you are adding to the list):
Quote
Tonberry Hash Errors:
bcsaka_1 or bcsaka1a : Tonberry hashing error : flag animation is old texture

Also, can someone move this post to releases please, or PM me with who I should ask.  :-P

Curse you! If you haven't made this mode for the Steam release I never ever had considered to buy the game again. But well, now the game is on sale for 66% off. Must resists ... must resis ... Screw you Steam and Omzy! I'll buy it!

By the way how can I convert the models into blender and back?  :-D

Trying to get this to work on my old Vaio Laptop but i get an error. Is my old Mobility Radeon HD 3470 - 256mb Graphics Card too weak maybe? Also, when i installed Microsoft VC++ Redistributable it was repaired. I'm doing everything correctly i think. Must be either my graphics card or a problem with the Redistributable...what else could it be? Any suggestions? Not even the Tripod Mod will work on its own, but i can play the unmodded steam version without any problems, hmm....weird.

What error? If it's some kind of MCblahblah.DLL error, it's the VC++

Make sure you have the latest versions of Tonberry - also, make you sure you exit steam completely before you mod.  You need to download your latest graphics drivers for your video card so you have DirectX9.  Also, since you had a problem with VC++, I would uninstall/reinstall it.

"An unknown exception has occured"....is the error message...yes do have the latest Tonberry, latest hashmaps, and im unable to update my graphics drivers because of no support for the Mobility Radeon HD 3470 - 256 mb. But i do have Directx9. Did uninstall and reinstall VC++ And im not a noob at modding, applying patches etc either. Could it really be that my Graphics Card is too weak for the upscaled Textures? It's not just this mod, but as soon as i installed Tonberry, nothing works anymore. But thanks for your help anyway, really appreciate it.

It is possible. The new textures are 4x but what that really means is 16x the number of pixels. Since each normal-sized texture is loaded once by the game so that it can be hashed, that means that loading textures requires 17x processing power compared to the original. I expect to see some trouble on older machines, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean it is definitely the problem you're having. Keep in mind, there still may be crashes that I'm not aware of after playing for a while or at certain junctures in the game, and someone has already brought up potential crashes when the game syncs with SE servers. There may also be a problem with the way you put the files in your directories.

There can be. This is essentially a beta release, so we need everyone to report the texture glitches. If you come across anymore, please report them here. Screenshots help!

Also I'm running Win 8.1 and the only other mod I'm using is the Roses and Wine audio mod.

I don't mean to sound rude with this, but I added a statement above the downloads section that states:
Quote
*Please DO NOT post any direct links to files, always link to this forum thread. Especially, do not make any links to adfly or any other ad site
My reasons for this are as follows:
1) I don't believe (ethically) that anyone should be profiting in any way off of game mods unless they require donations to stay in operation
2) If people want to download these files, I prefer that they come to the forum to do so. This allows them to see the other projects on the forum and potentially become interested and also provides them a place to find support for these mods
3) I shorten my URLs now using Google URL shortener because it provides interesting analytics on the number of clicks and countries that people click from and I'd like to keep track of those things

This doesn't just apply to this mod, but to all mods, and to software in general. It's always better to link to the official download site/forum post/whatever.

100% agreed.

I haven't experienced any problems so far using Tonberry but I'm playing the french version so some of the fields layers are kept untouched (maybe just by renaming the one *.png layer file would solve it ?).

Project Eden looks extremely good, I've tried the 4x xBR algorithm and it does a great job compared to; results are very similar to Omzy's, maybe slightly more sharp edges but the colors gradient are not as smooth, here's a preview, let me know what you guys think:

The edges for Omzy are slightly less jagged. I know Omzy worked diligently on the FF7 field textures to provide the best possible results, and thankfully it has transferred well into FF8.

Doing great nRage! Since I'm going to revamp hashing soon, don't bother documenting the hash errors right now and focus more on the project Eden glitches. Flickering back and forth between old and new is also a hashing error, just for an animation.

Man this is a pretty awesome mod. Those SE are a shameless people, re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release a game and make THAT sh**... This makes it look like it should have been from the beginning and I love it!

Just bought Steam version and I'm trying it, but it crashes every time I get an achievement. And man, at begining of the game you get achievements constantly.

I have this weird error too in the loading screen for a few seconds, then it fixes itself:

It crashes when I make a screenshot too ( actually, it crashed when I did that screenshot xD) I know this is caused by Tonberry or Project Eden because It's the only mod I have, and screenshots worked without them ( I made a few before installing them for comparing the difference ).

And, as you can see, I'm using the spanish version.

Greets!

Look at Tornberry (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15291.0)'s thread for ideas on how to avoid some of your problems.

Admittedly, some of these are very minor and very hard to notice. They could just be flaws in the original game I never noticed. Hope I'm not being to nitpicky, just tryin to make sure I'm thorough. For some of them you might have to look at the screens in full screen to even see it.

nRage, you're doing great. I don't think it's being nitpicky at all. It's all helping Omzy and the community reach the final release :)

So I recently installed RaW, Tonberry, and Project Eden and wanted to let you folks know that I'm getting the typical crash-at-achievement but also just randomly in between rooms. It's frustrating to the point I won't even play because I spend a ton of time doing some grindy thing like cards or drawing and can't make it to a save before crashing. It's like russian roulette every time I enter a room.

If you disable the steam overlay I've heard it helps with the achievement crashes. I've done so and it hasn't crashed at all. Also if you apply the 4gb patch to the ff8_en.exe it can greatly increase time between crashes. http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

You can find more info on the tonberry thread by the way.

You can also try setting yourself Offline before launching the game.

@JeMaCheHi

Look at Tornberry (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15291.0)'s thread for ideas on how to avoid some of your problems.

Didn't found anything in Tonberry's thread... Maybe I'm idiot xD

However, achievments crashes stopped when I loaded the game using the new DPLB's HextLauncher. Weird? Well, I wanted to tell you guys, maybe I give you some idea...

EDIT: Ok, I'm stupid, the game didn't crashed because the game didn't actually connect to the internet with the Hext Launcher u.u

Yep. Assuming you installed tonberry correctly and everything in the textures folder is in order. But I'm sure you know what your doing. If I may I'd suggest a few more mods? You might already know about them, but just in case...Maybe someone will find this helpful. These are all must have mods for me.  ;D

Tripod (for hd triple triad)
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15006.0

seed reborn (makes text look better)
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15320.0

RaW (fixes the low quality music)
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13715.0

And of course Project Eden!

Hope you, or someone finds this useful. Holler if you have any questions!  ;D

Great work man, FF8 was my favorite so I am looking forward to this, and you have helped speed things along quite a bit.  Now that your all finished up maybe you could help me out with my (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15335.0) pack now

Totally awesome mod but still quite many old textures around, once you really pay attention. The Timber Pub area is a great example of how there's a mish mash of upscaled and old textures going on. In Timber when you stand in the area right in front of the Pub:

Barrels = old texture
Blinking left light near the stairs = old texture / Right light = new texture
Right above the barrels = old texture
Left and right to the Pub signboard= old texture
At the upper right corner and around the middle right = few old textures
Left banister (stairs) = old texture

Inside the pub = several old textures

Once you really pay attention there are still quite many glitches and old textures. Nevertheless this is such an awesome mod and such an advancement, absolutely awesome, i just hope there is enough love for FF8 so it will eventually be fixed in future releases. Together, let's get closer and closer to perfection. FF8 is one of my all time fav FF's, lol. Anyhow, good job guys. Keep it up and dont loose motivation. You rock, this mod is truly epic.

PS: I'd be interested in learning about this whole modding business. Are there any tutorials or threads on the basics? On how to extract files, upscale them in photoshop and reinsert them? I'd like to start doing that myself. I'm a fast learner, so if anyone could point me in the right direction or explain some basics, it would be greatly appreciated and i could start being of help :D Are there any threads on this?

Hey Omzy, if you can provide me with some of the raw images (HUDs), I can remaster them in HD in Photoshop.  :P

and also the Balamb Garden Network on the computer in the beginning of the game.

Really nice looking mod, however.. whenever I have tried to download it says "Network Error" after it finishes the download. I do not have this problem with any other mod,
I was wondering if there is anything that anyone might know could be causing this or anything?

Could you give some more information on the error please--where do you see the error (screenshot), what are you able to get working so far, other mods installed, etc.

Nothing has happened when I click on it and internet searches haven't brought up anything besides trying again later.. which I have many times.
The current mods I have are Tonberry, SeeD, RaW and Tripod and they have all worked perfectly fine without any trouble.

EDIT: I have since tried downloading it in a different browser, changing proxy settings and disabling my virus protection, nothing has worked so far.

EDIT2: By downloading it with the Safari browser it finally worked.
It seems it would be a problem with either Chrome and internet explorer as I had no trouble at all downloading it with Safari.

Photopshop, a couple filter plugins, and a script to do most of the work automatically.

I want to help in this project...were i can donwload all original files of the backgrounds...I have the original PC version and the Steam version.I have 'Garden',to decompile the files, but i dont understand it too much.If you give me the PGN's untouched,I can do the job.

In Photoshop there are some plug-ins and filters...but...one need experience and knowledge to truly give life again to the backgrounds.

Good morning Qhimm people.
I have been visiting this site for many years, and love the Final Fantasy series.  I was hoping to get some help on this Project Eden mod. I have FF8, which I purchased through Steam, and was wondering if Project Eden works on Steam installations?. My menu path looks nothing like the one described in the original post, it is more like
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FINAL FANTASY VIII

Is this where I should install it?. I cannot see any other place to put it?.

Thanks

Yes it works on Steam.

First of all you should have installed the Tonberry though or else this will not work.

Check out MCINDUS YT-channel for some vids: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBLOBIu0AHQyCzP0BjCbbCg/videos

But in short it's just a matter of coyping and pasting files to the appropriate folder.

I'm not tech-savy enough to do screenshots but on that one stage of the fire level (the one where you can draw in a magic spell) at the the top left you'll notice an error in the lava.

Project Eden looks great overall but I'm still curious to see when the updated version will come out.

Mr. Omzy, any news on that front and anything the fans can do to help? :)

Also just wanted to add- MAJOR props to Omzy for this mod!  Despite the minor flaws in some areas the game as a whole looks night and day better.  I can't even go back to the original now. :P

So thank you man! :)

For everyone wondering about Project Eden updates, I talked to Omzy and this is what he wanted me to pass on:

 ----------------------------------
- From Omzy -

Sorry I haven't had more of a presence on the forums recently-- a lot of stuff is going on that's keeping me from my me-time for a while. I hope that next month I have some more free time--my schedule should clear out a bit, hopefully.

Regarding Hashing:
I looked at what Shunsq was posting and it seems he's working hard on his end. He did message me asking for the current hashing algorithms and I sent them to him. There is yet more that needs to be done on my end to the hash algorithms so that they are better quality, but it seems like what you all are doing is working for now. Once people start trying to replace magic/battle/world map textures, etc, the problems will become more apparent, similar to some of the problems in Project Eden.

Regarding the Source Code:
I've been thinking about releasing the source code as is.  If you find anyone that you think would be able to do some good work on that front, let me know and I'll send it their way.

Also, would you mind posting this update in some of my threads? I know people have been asking when updates will happen.

- Omzy
------------------------

Hopefully that answers some questions and gives everyone a better understanding of the time frame!  Omzy is THE MAN, so I'm sure he'll get around to an update when he can, and it will rock just as hard as it always does!

Would you like me to create and seed a torrent pack with the essential graphical updates/mods that are Tonberry dependent? Tonberry, Eden, hashmaps, Cards (tripod)? I can post it in "The pirate bay" or anywhere else.

No - making an overall torrent doesn't make things very 'central' when updates are constantly available.  I don't want people using old versions of files when they can just come here and find the latest, most bug-free releases for the mods.
Maybe once we have all of the translations, the new world map textures, and magochocobo's textures, we could release something big.  But until then, things are entirely too 'patchy' right now to not bring an onslaught of confusion with it.

This brings up an excellent point, though:
Maybe then we could get people in the community to help us create an installer for the game.  Nothing as in-depth as Bootleg, but I would love to have an installer that would include options such as:

- Choose between the available languages [English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Greek, and Polish] for SeeD Reborn (available soon!)
- Pick your font for SeeD Reborn (I'm working on a few for the English version)
- Pick your own title screen, (Working on a few)
- Choose between "Tripod" (current release) and "Tripod Deluxe" (available soon!)
- Implement Project Eden v1.0 - Omzy's field upscale
- Update the world map! (I'm compiling the files to be hashed)
- Implement Magochocobo's textures (Omzy is working on it for a future Tonberry release)
- (If we get the author's permission!) Choose between installing "RaW" or the "PC to PSX" music mods (who knows, maybe they could even help us?)

I know, I have lofty dreams.

Downloading now, I'll seed it too as I have some extra space on my hard drive ^^

I like the installer idea too, if someone can make it! :) I'll look a bit on google and stuff if I can find how to, maybe I can help ^^ (I have extra time too xD)

Edit: Well I think I figured out a nice way of doing the installer, I've made a first exemple with Tonbery (I hope you don't mind Omzy, but as it's mandatory for most of other mods... ^^ Of course I'll ask all mods authors if I do a complete version of this installer, if some don't want to be in it I will still be able to put a link to their work at the end of the installation ^^) and SeeD Reborn here: http://perdu.com/ I'll make a new topic about this if you want me to continue :) It's very basic, but could be a good start ^^ (also, I haven't included the VC++ redistribuable within the installer to avoid having something to heavy for this first test, but it can be added easily ^^)

Hello mama-sensei you have to disable the steam overlay or it will keep causing crashes.

1) Click on Steam and click on the "Settings" button. Click on the "In-Game Settings" tab.

2) Uncheck the box next to "Enable Steam Community In-Game" and click OK.

3) Disable the Steam Overlay on specific games only by right-clicking on the game title, click on "Properties" and uncheck "Enable Steam Community In-Game" in the "General" tab.

This is a very noobish question, but for some reason, my version of the Steam game does not use the same folder hierarchy that it shows in the tutorial. In fact, by default, there is no Textures folder, only when you unzip the Eden mod is there one. But on my PC, there is no C:\Program Files (x86)\Final Fantasy VIII\Textures, at all. Instead, it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Final Fantasy VIII.   However, when I installed Eden and Tonberry as per instructions, the background Jpeg files were still 320 x 240 and not the smooth ones. What am I doing wrong? Did I install these incorrectly or are they not compatible with the Steam version?  I don't know why the folder hierarchy is so weird, but, no matter what I do, the updated backgrounds are not working and I can't find the original ones that were installed to replace.

You have to extract the content of tonberry.rar ( a folder named tonberry , another named textures and some dlls) into "FINAL FANTASY VIII/". By default there are no textures folder in the FINAL FANTASY VIII folder.
Then you download eden and copy all the texture folders into FINAL FANTASY VIII/textures.
Have you read the first page of this topic? All the instructions are there.

I did, I believe I may have skipped copying the dll files into the FF8 root directory and I have gotten it to work. However, I have encountered a serious game-breaking glitch. So, in Deling City when you extract the GF Carbuncle, and complete the battle, the game has a black screen, but the victory music plays. Is this because the mod messes with the system files or what? That shouldn't be happening.

For version 1.1, what if you just removed all the files for the glitchy backgrounds (until they can be fixed or something)?
I really want this but I really don't want glitchy textures too.

Hello

I just recently tried to install these new textures. I went through the process described, but it breaks my game. After installing the textures, every time I go to launch the game I get errors:

"An unknown exception has occurred."

"Final Fantasy VIII for PC has stopped working."

EDIT: I have resolved this issue! I know that there were quite a few people with this same issue. The issues, for me, was caused because I had the wrong drive letter in prefs.txt. prefs.txt doesn't seem to be asking where the game is installed but, rather, where windows is installed. Entering the drive in which my Windows is installed on fixed the issues. For instance, I have Windows installed on C and FFVIII installed on E. If I set prefs.txt to E then the game will not launch, but if I set it to C then it launches.

I know that for other these areas are improved like the training hall.

Hello all,

I seem to be having an issue since upgrading to Tonberry 2.0, wish i could help where i am located in the game. It appears though that eden is partially loading in some spots and in others it does load in the town im in. I just came back from doing the Forgotten king where you get the Brothers GF. Screen capping is also appearing to allude me. Files are blank when i try to copy and steam is not allowing me to screenshot it.

Did you put collisions.csv and hash2map.csv in the FINAL FANTASY VIII/tonberry/ folder?  You still need those files from Tonberry 1.5 to make this work...  Go here for the files:

Current Tonberry v1.61 issue!
To prevent collisions, you must download these 2 files and place them here:
(/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/tonberry/)
Collisions
Hash2Map

Redownloaded the files and transferred them to /tonberry and /tonberry/hashmaps, just to be safe. Files still seem to not load for the city, but loads for the outside world. it seems to come and go but could be the result of that duplication for the outside map.

Hello. I seem to be unable to get Project Eden to work on Tonberry 2.1. As of now, this is the only mod I have installed. The .dlls are present in \Final Fantasy VIII, and I have collisions.csv and hash2map.csv in the proper folder.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to me that any of Eden's textures are loading; at least not in Balamb Garden and the nearby locales.

On initially loading the game, the starting sequence tends to look like this

Whenever text is present. The boxes for keyboard lay out and yes/no when exiting the game are blank, as well.

If anyone can offer any suggestions or solutions, it would be greatly appreciated. Please note, though, that I am fairly inept at this -- at least compared to many of you -- and will require specific instructions.

If I should have put this in Tonberry's main thread, I apologize. I thought to put it here because I had no issues with the graphical mods until I went for Eden. Thanks in advanced.

Edit: Well, now I feel embarrassed, as rereading the Tonberry threads have proven me a fibber. Collision and hash2map were not in the proper folders. Hoping that rectifying the situation will fix the problem.  I apologize for wasting anyone's time reading this.

Love the community, though. You guys seem amazing.

Omzy, love your mod and contributions.  After numerous installs and PMs w/ Mcindus and Maverick I finally narrowed down what was causing my game to crash randomly during screen transitions and menus by systematically installing and running mods in the game one-by-one.  It unfortunately was Project Eden.  I verified my mod installs and pathing w/ Mcindus and Maverick and they were stumped as well.  I attempted to relocate collisions.csv and hash2map.csv, but they didn't seem to affect anything regardless if the files were/were not present in the /tonberry root.  The game would still behave the same; everything runs fine and looks great, but it will randomly go to a black screen where I must alt-tab and I will receive an error in Windows that says "An Unknown Error has occurred".  I am currently running flawlessly w/ every mod listed in the Graphical Release Forum for FF8 on Steam except for Project Eden.

Long of the short, I isolated the problem, but I would love to know how to begin fixing it as your backgrounds bring FF8 up to PS2-era graphics (and I must have them).  Do I need to install PuPu and catch the dumps? Also, how do I enable Tonberry v2.02 to begin logging hash checks?

Thanks for all your hard work.

Please see the Tonberry v2.03 Thread (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15945.0), as you need to have the Tonberry Tool installed in order to inject textures into the game.

Been awhile since I've used v1.5. You'll still need them depending on which mods you're going to use. But, at the same time, v1.5 is slower and can crash depending on certain scenarios. A majority of these problems have been resolved on the newest version. And in this version hash1map already has the codes for Project Eden, SeeD Reborn, and TT I believe?

Not sure what I did wrong since the instructions are very simple to follow, but this mod doesn't seem to be working for me. I downloaded and copied the into my textures folder, but  when I load the game all the textures look exactly the same as if I hadn't changed anything at all.

I'm using Tonberry 1.6 and I'm not getting any errors or crashes whatsoever. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it, last mod I wanted, all the rest are working great! Let me know if you need anymore info.

Hey, Ozmy!
Are also going to make this kind of mod for the upcoming Steam release of Final Fantasy 9?

It would certainly be nice, but the modding process involves making the tools first to help extract/unpack game files to be modded. I don't think we have those tools yet, so we'll first have to do some waiting after the game release.

Not sure if this is the right spot for this one...

I'm running into an unknown exception error in the same spot, when Squall Selphie and Zell are boarding the ship to leave the Dollet mission.  I have RaW, Tonberry 2.04, Apocalypse, Horizon, LunarCry, Project Eden, SeeDReborn and Tripod installed.  From the Biggs/Wedge fight up to here I didn't run into any other errors.  Has anyone ran into this before?

I believe this would go here. As I've been playing the game with this mod as well as other mods installed I am noticing that a lot of the backgrounds have discolored and pixelated square textures that are showing. An instance of this is seen at the dollet communications tower. I notice it as squall and his party come down from the tower and exit as the spider machine thing is up top before it jumps down. When I look at the background in parts of the sky and the tower there are square pixelated discolored textures. I noticed these types of square textures in various backgrounds throughout the game especially where there is a light source from a lamp fixture.

Another thing that I saw as I was playing the game, when squall is carrying Rinoa on her back to Esthar on the train tracks in fisherman's horizon as squall is walking towards the light posts and walks past the light posts the light posts cover him in the background meaning you can't see him as he's walking through/past the light post. I am not sure if this is a project Eden issue or another mod issue but I think it has to do with this mod. I have everything installed correctly I believe.

I have the hash1map, hash2map, and collision in the main tonberry folder as well as the hashmap for this mod and other mods in the hashmap folder and one objmap file for another mod, lunar cry.  Are these texture glitches known or am I forgetting something?  And is there a fix?

I am using the latest version of Tonberry 2.04 and I believe I have the most current hashmap files from Mcindus.

I can upload (I think) images of my file directories to see if anyone thinks there is something wrong but I'm not sure how to do that.  I'm not the most computer savvy.

You should remove hash1map - it is no longer needed.  hash2map is very important and deals with collisions, and that should be in your /tonberry/ folder, not the hashmap folder (which it seems like you've done already).  Make sure collisions.csv is also in the /tonberry/ folder.

Hey. I'm experiencing some of the graphical glitches reported by nRage on page 2 of this thread. I'm wondering though, in the initial post, this screenshot was shown.

https://1f4047f4b2ba7f2a0addca2365f349169e62e13a.googledrive.com/host/0ByMkI_Nb8OmJRlZfaVdfWU92aUU/gggate1_01.png

My gggate1_01 looks like the screenshot nRage captured:

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d129/ethan_wilson1991/ff8%20project%20eden/gggate1_zps6750476f.jpg?112

I'm wondering, since this glitch has already been reported, and since there is a screenshot of the background working properly on page 1, does that mean that there's a release somewhere which fixes it? Something I'm missing? Maybe it's my hashmap file? I'm using Tonberry 2.04, and I'm using the Project Eden hashmap from page 1 of the Tonberry 2.04 thread. And no, I don't have hash1map.csv in my Tonberry folder.

I thought it might be one of those texture collisions I've been reading about (though that's just a wild guess -- I've been scanning these forums for information and that seems to be a commonly reported problem), so I tried sticking all of my mods' hashmap files except the Project Eden one into the disabled folder. No dice, the field is still glitched.

Thanks for all the hard work everyone!

I know this is already documented, but bghall4a is causing a glitch with the elevators. I'm pretty sure the textures were swizzled incorrectly, or at least that's what it looks like.

Does anybody have a mirror for this?
I think this is the only mod that still uses the defunct download site, and after wiping my hard drive I really want to experience it again.
EDIT: Sorry for being an idiot.

There's the two links in the OP, and the one torrent link in one of McIndus' posts.
I've tried all of them, and they all go to 13tomidnight.

I'm not the author of this mod, so I can't change the OP.

Not sure if this is still something being worked on, but my game is crashing when I walk into the Timber Maniacs building in Timber.  Had to disable all the mods one at a time to figure out which one was causing the crash, haha.

Hello, thought id make a post on this forum as it seems more relevant.

I've got all the other mods i want working (Tripod, SeeD reborn, rebirth flame, etc) but i cant seem to get Eden to work.

I have copied all of the textures folder from the eden download to my ff8 textures folder, put the hash file in the hashmaps folder yet nothing changes when i load the game, i get odd black lines around the fountain in east balamb garden area but no actual graphical up-scaling happening.

unsure what I'm doing wrong.
This is my textures folder, hashmap folder and a screenshot of in game.

Thanks in advance to any help/suggestions!

It's working.
If you were to put the hashmap for Project Eden in the disabled folder, you'd notice that the backgrounds become insanely pixellated, so unless someone makes new renders for every background (which is extremely unlikely), we just have to upscale the backgrounds, which make them look like that.

Ok having issues , I have all my other mods installed and working great. I downlod this and copy its contents into my Textures Folder....and nothing. Was a Hashmap file suppose to be included in this download because it doesn't give one :(   ( I am somewhat new to this lol  )

Thank you all for your amazing work!

Hi Forum,

first of all i want to thank everybody here for the great support and mods. It is really awesome work !!

I have a questrion regarding the Project Eden Mod.

I am running the german Version of the FF8 Steam Version. The Mods are workig fine so far, but somehow some of the Backrounds are not replaced with the new ones and sometimes only parts of the backgrounds are filtered, while other parts stay unfiltered.

Has anyone an idea why?

Is it normal that some areas are not improved?
I know that for other these areas are improved like the training hall.

See images:

I use the german version of Final Fantasy 8 if that matters.
I use other mods too but i disabled all except Project Eden and the german version of Seed Reborn.

Thats exactly how it looks to me.

And sorry for my bad english^^ I am not a native speaker

Add me to the list.
Altho Project Eden seems to work in most backgrounds i've seen (at least in the early parts of the game) sometimes there is more "pixelation" than it should be (maybe?).

i.e My entrance to garden's training room looks like the screeshots linked by other users. And it's not just these 2 screens.

Tbh, imo it is not the end of the world if some backgrounds during the game are totally or partially pixelated, but i'm leaving this feedback just in case.
Got tomberry updated, different mods installed. Italian version.

Yes there are bugs/missing areas because Omzy used an automation tool to do all the fields and it didn't do everything 100%. It would be a waste of time to fix it up now since waifu upscale is superior and you would be better off using/making a new version.

Hi!

I want to make my own backgrounds pack using Waifu and editing some backgrounds in GIMP. But after upscaling & editing, I would need to get them in this format:

I know how to get the complete backgrounds with Deling, or by layers using Unmass & Pupu, but I don't know how to get them in that format so that Tomberry can use them :/

What is the process? Can someone explain to me what I would have to do to create those images in the picture I shared?

If you've already exported them with Pupu, once you're done upscaling/editing them, you import them using Pupu and it'll convert them into what you need.

Just found this article (https://arstechnica.co.uk/information-technology/2017/02/google-brain-super-resolution-zoom-enhance/) inside there's a algorithm for enhancing pixelated pictures called PixelCNN. Maybe someone can give it a try on FFVII/VIII backgrounds; the code is in python and I don't have that kind of knowledge to try this out.

From their GitHub: https://github.com/openai/pixel-cnn (https://github.com/openai/pixel-cnn)

Quote
This code supports multi-GPU training of our improved PixelCNN on CIFAR-10 and Small ImageNet, but is easy to adapt for additional datasets. Training on a machine with 8 Maxwell TITAN X GPUs achieves 3.0 bits per dimension in about 10 hours and it takes approximately 5 days to converge to 2.92.

To run this code you need the following: a machine with multiple GPUs

Holy cats. Using this tool doesn't seem unreasonably difficult, do you have multiple nvidia gpus?

Edit: But I don't think you'll get anything desirable out of it

Hi all. Let me know if this post itself belongs. It's kind of an inactive thread, but I'll ask anyway.

I got all the mods running and working except for this one - there are a few random textures that don't seem to be working. Here's a screen:

Most of the textures work, but there seems to be a couple random ones that aren't working. Anyone know why?

I have the eden hashmap in the /tonberry/hashmap folder as well.

Project Eden's hashmap is missing a few hashes. You're welcome to use Project AngelWing's hashmaps which should fix a majority of the missing hashes for Eden's. But that's up to you.

You can use Project Angelwing's hashmap (which is better for Eden than it's own hashmap, imo)
OR
Go to the Tonberry: Enhanced page and download it from the second post.
