So yeah like the title says I was just wondering what the differences were between running this game in x84 or x64 mode via the checkbox in the launcher.  e.g. does it make the graphics better, does it speed up the game. Or what does it actually do???

That's a good question. Most of the files used are exactly the same in both modes. The "msvcp" DLLs and the plugins DLLs are different files but their usefulness is limited.

FF9SpecialEffectPlugin.dll is used to render the spell effects (particle emitters and stuff like that) so maybe there's a graphical difference for spells (the other models and backgrounds are the same in x64 and x86).
SdLib.dll is used for the sound, so maybe there's a sound quality difference (in both case, that quality is bad though because of the bad frequency ; there are mods to fix that DLL).

But I don't know anything specific.

Thanks that explains a bit. Having issues trying to launch FF9 via Memoria engine though. Just results in a black screen

It's mostly because Memoria doesn't support older versions of FFIX, so if you're using pirated copy you'd need to search for updated version or just preferably buy FFIX on Steam. It's often on -50%
