Tennessee man imprisoned for "hacking"  Pail's email
http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/01/13/sarah-palins-email-hacker-imprisoned/

First of all, a year in prison seems pretty severe for  this dude's "crime," but the thing that annoys me the most is that the media treats this guy like he is a computer guru with skill so arcane, he can break into high-profile  email accounts.   They always refer to him as the "hacker" who "broke" into Sarah  Palin's email account, yet a middle schooler with a basic knowledge of computers could've done the same thing.

As one user on slashdot put it:
"Please stop talking about this guy like he has some computer wizardry - he guessed at recovery questions. If I leave a riddle taped to my safe that gives the combo when solved, how angry can I be when somebody figures it out?"

Yeah, a riddle who's answer is public knowledge and easily found using any search engine. Good job, Palin.

General Discussion / Nexus

For anyone who likes the game Portal, read on:

I study computer engineering, but I do game programming as a little side hobby. That said, I released my first video game to the public today: http://www.yoyogames.com/games/155296-nexus  (requires windows and either firefox or chrome)

It was made with gamemaker, so I still feel like kind of a game programming noob, but I think GM is still a neat little tool.  Let me know what you guys thinK

General Discussion / FF7 Disk 2
« on: 2010-09-12 18:20:17 »
I haven't visited this site in a quite a long time, but I encountered a small problem, so I figured this would be the best place to solve it.

So, I decided to boot up FF7 the other day, when I made a shocking discovery: My disk 2 got scratched somehow, and some of the data on it is unreadable (flevel, and some of the cutscene files)!  Now, I figured that the game data would be the same across all three disks, so I was able to make a copy of flevel from disk 1, but the cinema files appear to be irreplaceable.

So here is my question: Are the cutscenes the only difference between the 3 disks? If so, does anybody know where I could get a copy of the disk 2 movies?

Completely Unrelated / FF7 on PSP

Well, I've finally finished my goal. Behold, I give you a working FF7 on PSP!

Screenshot:

What you need: FF7 PSX image, a PSP
How to get it working:

Alright, I'm just kidding, and I know this is a day late from April Fools :P... sorry if I got any hopes up.
Actually this is my first GIMP "photoshop" so since it was FF related I figured I'd post it here.

Completely Unrelated / The best linux for starters?
« on: 2007-11-02 18:55:01 »
This topic has probably been created about a million times, but what is the best linux for someone just starting out?

I want to switch to linux, but I'm not sure which one (so many choices!). People have told me to use Ubuntu, Slackware, and others, but I'm not really sure what the difference is between them. Is one faster than another? By the way, my system isn't exactly a powerhouse, so I want something that isn't too hardware demanding...

Any suggestions?

Completely Unrelated / Speech Comparison/Recognition
« on: 2007-07-26 00:44:51 »
This may seem like bit of an odd question, but I recently had this entertaining idea. I thought to myself, after reading the final Harry Potter book, that it might be neat to create a (Harry Potter-esque) game (or simply a game prototype in my case) that employs a microphone to control spell casting. In my mind, it didn't seem like too difficult a concept, seeing how Vista has a vast network of speech recognition software (I have windows XP, however).

Would this be possible easy somewhat feasible with the resources of a teenager? I was thinking either converting the inputted speech to words and doing string comparisons, but then I thought it would be much more efficient to compare it to a pre-recorded version of the spell. Any ideas?

Completely Unrelated / Anime is like watching an RPG
« on: 2007-06-29 04:34:36 »
...or at least Castle in the Sky was. Frankly, that was the first anime movie I have bothered to sit through, and it gave me the feeling that I had just beaten a really good RPG. Castle in the Sky in particular reminded me of Chrono Trigger (Zeal, etc.).

Anyway, are there any other good anime movies (I don't really want to get into a series) I should watch? I really don't watch anime, and nor do my friends, so I'm at a loss on what to watch next. If anyone knows of some other good ones out there like Castle in the Sky, let me know, please.

Completely Unrelated / Interesting puzzle game
« on: 2007-04-29 03:53:25 »
http://www.mathsnet.net/geometry/solid/houses.html

This is an interesting puzzle game that I've stumbled upon. The object of the puzzle is to build a 3d object that meets the view requirements in the upper left corner. If you've found a solution, a green dot will appear next to the puzzle name. If you've found a solution using the least number of cubes, a yellow dot will appear next to the puzzle name. I've solved all of them (yellow dot) without cheating except the first.

(Earphones needed. The better the earphone, the cooler the effect)

This audio clip is a very high-quality demonstration of positional sound. I thought it was very well made clip. Cheesy Italian accents, but sometimes it seemed as though I wasn't wearing earphones at all, and that there were other people in the room.

Completely Unrelated / Video Editing
« on: 2006-12-11 17:46:06 »
Does anybody know of some good (preferably free) video editing software? I have used Adobe Premiere 6.0 and I absolutely love it, but it is >$600... Windows Movie Maker on the other hand completly sucks, and I'm still looking around. It would be beneficial if the software had the ability to reverse a clip and have the "layers" timeline system (like Adobe Premiere) but anything is better than WMM.

Completely Unrelated / Pocket PC/Palm Pilot
« on: 2006-11-11 20:22:15 »
Hey all,

I've been wanting to get a PDA for a while, and Christmas is the perfect time. All I'm wondering is, what do you have and/or recommend? Should I even get one? I've taken a look at this iPAQ from HP, and it looks pretty functional, but I also saw some Treo cell phones at the store and was wondering if anyone has tinkered around with those as well (I'm not sure if I want a chunky PC cell phone, but still...).

I was additionally looking at Dell Axims (such as this one), but I havn't ever been a big Dell fan.

I kind of want to be able to play music and videos, and have some sort of Outlook organization program, but as for games, I'm not sure what's available, or rather, what I should be looking for  :|.

Well, that about sums up my research, hope I'll get a few recommendations,

Completely Unrelated / Slow Window Refreshing -solved-
« on: 2006-09-03 23:18:58 »
I recently reformatted my hard drive, when much to my dismay, I found that when I dragged windows about the screen, they seemed to lag. In firefox, scolling down is also "laggy"... I'm thinking there is a problem with the window refresh rate, not the moniter refresh rate which is causing this to happen (videos work fine). I'm not sure how to fix this, any ideas?

(This did not happen before the hard-drive was wiped)

Thanks.

Completely Unrelated / Super Nintendo (updated)
« on: 2006-06-22 23:22:04 »
Anybody else have this system? Personally, I think it is the best Nintendo system ever.

I'm currently trying to deck out my SNES by unsoldering the standard red power LED and replacing it with a neon blue one. I'm also painting flames on the sides and adding a 50Hz/60Hz switch and a few other things. It proved very troblesome opening up the actual console, as it is screwed shut very tightly with 4.5 mm flower shaped screws. I had to buy a special tool just to open it. I'll post pictures when it is done. Anyways, I'm trying to complete my SNES squaresoft collection, as well as other "must-haves".

So far, I have:

Final Fantasy III
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
--as well as--
Super Metroid
Star Fox
Donkey Kong 2 & 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario All-Stars
Sim City
Pocky and Rocky II
Gradius III
NBA Hang-Time (sucks)
NCAA Basketball (sucks)
Tetris/Dr. Mario
T.M.N.T. IV: Turtles in Time
Where's Waldo (sucks)
Godzilla (sucks)

I'm trying to obtain:

Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Secret of Evermore
Breath of Fire
--as well as--
Earthbound ($$$...  :-o)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario World II: Yoshi's Island

Have I missed any worthwhile SNES games?

Completely Unrelated / Colleges and such
« on: 2006-05-16 00:09:38 »
Hmm, well I'll be going to college next year, any suggestions? I'm thinking about going to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) or USAFA. I got a 32 on the ACT (35 on the math section :-D), but if I retake, I'm pretty sure I can get higher. Where are you guys going (future or currently [or in the past])?

Archive / FF7 Dialogue
« on: 2005-10-07 22:45:58 »
Alright, so basically I've been searching for hours for this one guide I read about somewhere or something... Anyways, I want to know how the text is stored into a ff7 level so I can try making my own program that can edit it kind of like Fice's Cosmo... (as a project for AP Computer Science) I think I read somewhere that someone wrote a guide for this, like don't you add a certain value to the normal ASCII or something to decrypt it? I can't remeber is the thing, and I've searched through the Cosmo source, but with no success...

I think what I'm asking is, isn't there an faq for all the ff7 file formats and their structures somewhere..?

Archive / LGP Tools
« on: 2005-09-23 01:14:08 »
Hey, I was wondering what that 'patch creater' function in LGP Tools is used for specifically. Say I have flevel.lgp and a modified flevel.lgp... Could I make a 'patch' that would modify anyone's flevel to the way my modified one was? What I'm really asking is, since my cussword-free flevel is almost 100% complete, I wan't to make a patch similar to reunions patch so I can give it to my cousin easier, you know what I'm saying? Well, any info on this would be great, I've been messing around with LGPtools I think it should work (ficedula's built in patch maker), but I can always do the fix the hard way...

Archive / LGP Compression
« on: 2005-07-17 21:08:09 »
Hmm, I'm going to sound like a noob but...
I decompressed flevel.lgp, edited the level files inside, and now I need to compress all of the levels back into flevel again. Problem is, I'm having trouble doing just that. I've tried some of fice's tools, but I can't get them to work! Can some one please enlighten me? I know there is an easy way to do this, but I'll need pretty specific instructions though, I'm not as smart as you guys. Thanks

Troubleshooting / Ficedula: S&R
« on: 2005-06-27 23:16:23 »
Hey, fice, If you are still here, I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm trying to fix your search and replace tool on "cosmo", your text editor, but I'm not really sure what the prob is. The actual code that is causing S&R to malfunction is in cosmosearch.pas right? well this is the code for it: I can't really tell why it gets stuck at initializing (BTW I fixed your spelling error)... anyways, can anyone help?

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / How does it work?
« on: 2005-06-16 04:17:37 »
Alright, I'm wondering how... like, ff7's text is stored in flevel, so I'm making a program that will decompress it and make it so I change the text. I need to mass change the text, but the individual levels are encrypted, correct? So do you need some sort of equation or somthing to decrypt it? How does thaat work? I'm not very good w/ this stuff, I've tried changing around simple SNES roms but I couldn't even do that... :-?  I tried looking at cosmo's source, but Delphi is being gay to me, so I'm writing the prog in C++. Any suggestions?

Archive / Out of Memory
« on: 2005-05-14 01:03:46 »
Whenever I try to use Mv3's Sapphire to conxert txts back to the levels, it just freezes and say Out of Memory.  The txt file is 20 kbs, and the level is 1 mb.  I set my virtual memory to like 700 mb and it still says that.  My hard disk isn't full ata ll, and I_just_want_to_turn_the_txts_back_into_levels!  Once I do that, I can turn all the levels into flevel and play ff7 again. Yay!  Is the problem in Sapphire, or my comp?

PS A "low virtual memory message" comes up after I try each time. Anyone else have these problems?

« on: 2005-05-09 17:17:41 »
To anyone who has used Sapphire (M4v3R's text editor) :
For some reason, when I press Open LGP Archive and try to open flevel.lgp, it says:

Access violation at address 00472C62 in module "Sapphire.exe" Read of address 000002F8.   :(

What do I need to do, to get this to work?

How can I fix this? Also when I save it to a txt and chage it there, how do I then turn all the files back into flevel?

Does anyone have an faq or help file?
Thanks, RPGillespie

Hello!

how do you tell the difference between the UK, USA, JAPAN, etc. versions of FF7?  Do the discs look different? By the way, is the UK version rated E? I mean how much cussing/wall market material does it have in it? Thanks

Archive / Editing teh text
« on: 2005-04-30 02:58:37 »
Alright boyz, here's the scoop:

My poor, destitute cousin is not allowed to play video games with cussing. No acceptions.  So, when I gave him FF7, he was crestfallen that he could no longer play such an awesome game (his mom found out).  Being the curious programmer that I am, I though to myself, hey, why can't I just edit the text with a hex editor or something, right?  So I asked around at forums.hackthissite.org but, even though everyone thinks they are a hacker there, they are all noobs who suck. So I was looking around in the different data files, with XVI32 but couldn't find anything.  Thats when I found this site (by accident) and got ahold of lgp extractors, etc. and.... COSMO (in-game text editor).  Now you are probably thinking (way ahead of you buddy, just press alt+f,left, enter on "move" and hold left) but you are wrong!  COSMO works wonderfully and I can successfully edit the text.  Now here's where efficiency comes in.  There are like 800 files that I have to root through searching for damn, hell, etc.  and for some reason, some flevel files have the same text in them, and in order for it to work, I have to edit all of them for it to take effect.

Q1.  Do I really have to edit all of them or just one?

Alright, anyways, then I saw the Search/Replace "tool" and though "Sweet, now I can just put * for the files to search type damn for search and dang for replace" and press scan.   BUT GUESS WHAT???  All that happened was a little message saying "Initialising" (ficedula, it's spelled Initializing in case you didn't know, but I've already changed it in the source for myself" And what the gay? nothing happens, I don't think, I haven't waited longer than 10 - minutes.

Q2. Is is broken? If so how can I fix it?

Now at this very moment I will type my third, and most important section. (Sorry that I blab so much, Its just that I hate it when people talk like this (like at hackthissite):

I m a no0b can uhelp me i need help cause iam ano0b?
or
][ /-\ /\/\ /-\ |\|()()|3...

OK... *deep breath* *cracks fingers*,  Say I completely change flevel so it is cussword free.  flevel is like 128 mbs before you mess with it and I don't want to have to burn a new ff7 install CD with the modifyed flevel.  My friend at school said something about a patch... and how it is just a file that tells the computer the differences between file1 and file2.  Is it possible to make a swearword patch? Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I know C++ and VB.

Thank you, This forum ROCKS!!!  It took me a month of uselessly trying to hex-edit lgp file before I found it...

Well thank you... All help is appreciated... Sorry for the lengthy post... heh heh

I LOVE, NOT HATE, LOVE
