A little late to the party, I used to frequent these forums back in 2005-2007ish. I was a freshman in high school at the time. I remember when Q-Gears was kicked off (and I even submitted a logo to the Q-Gears logo contest!). Only a few people probably remember me (Qhimm probably remembers me from the time I went on trolling spree with an admin impersonation account I made called "Qhimm`" (note the backtick). Surprised he didn't ban me after that (but glad he gave me a second chance :P). Anyway, I'm married with 3 kids now, been working as a professional software developer for embedded linux ARM systems for about 8 years.

The easiest solution would be to teach your wife about the macro setting on the camera and send her back over to take some better pictures. Put the figurines on a uniform surface that is well-lit, turn on the macro setting, and use a mini-tripod if you don't have steady hands.  All the photoshop in the world won't looks as good as a picture that was taken right the first time.

Tennessee man imprisoned for "hacking"  Pail's email
http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/01/13/sarah-palins-email-hacker-imprisoned/

First of all, a year in prison seems pretty severe for  this dude's "crime," but the thing that annoys me the most is that the media treats this guy like he is a computer guru with skill so arcane, he can break into high-profile  email accounts.   They always refer to him as the "hacker" who "broke" into Sarah  Palin's email account, yet a middle schooler with a basic knowledge of computers could've done the same thing.

As one user on slashdot put it:
"Please stop talking about this guy like he has some computer wizardry - he guessed at recovery questions. If I leave a riddle taped to my safe that gives the combo when solved, how angry can I be when somebody figures it out?"

Yeah, a riddle who's answer is public knowledge and easily found using any search engine. Good job, Palin.

Well you sure got your future covered ha. And I feel like a moron for not knowing people get paid around here. Now I just feel like a loser.

Obesebear was being sarcastic (at least, I would hope). Qhimm posted a while ago that he was having a hard enough time just covering bandwidth costs of the website (let alone paying a bunch of moderators "enough to get by" on).

For anyone who likes the game Portal, read on:

I study computer engineering, but I do game programming as a little side hobby. That said, I released my first video game to the public today: http://www.yoyogames.com/games/155296-nexus  (requires windows and either firefox or chrome)

It was made with gamemaker, so I still feel like kind of a game programming noob, but I think GM is still a neat little tool.  Let me know what you guys thinK

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii).

Your tactical skills would have to be the level of Napolean Bonaparte in order to beat it even on normal mode (and you'd have to be a computer in order to beat it on hard mode).  If you make even the tiniest error in the middle of a long and difficult battle, the enemy will exploit it and kill one of your characters.

I have only a few problems with wikileaks.  I think that the idea behind it is good, however I think a few of wikileaks's practices should change.  Firstly, it seems as though wikileaks has a bias towards publishing US-related material.  Other countries acted shocked when it was revealed that the leaked cables "address negative perceptions of various world leaders, repeated calls for US attack on Iran, and requests for US diplomats to spy on other countries' officials," but chances are they are doing the same sorts of things; they just haven't been burned by wikileaks yet. I would like to see more leaks on other countries such as China and Russia.

Also, I think there is a line that ought not be crossed.  There are things that should and should not be leaked:
-Documents, blueprints, and engineering charts on how to make nuclear weapons should not be leaked.
-How the government is spending tax money should be leaked.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_%28Internet%29

Thanks, is there a term for someone with a wikipedia phobia?

Nope. You'll need to overcome that phobia if you ever want to learn anything. Here I'll copy and paste the first line of the article for you:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Basically, a troll just tries to get attention from a given community by posting something scandalous, shocking, annoying, stupid, or otherwise emotion-invoking.

When I dropped my phone in the river a while back I put it in the oven for like 5 minutes on 150.   I THINK.    Do some research on a good way to put it in the oven and you should be set.   Or take it apart and manually dry everything.   And of course remove the battery asap.

I read that taking the phone apart and putting it distilled water is the best way to ionize the minerals that may have deposited in your phone from the river water (otherwise the minerals could cause a short circuit). Then, let it dry and re-assemble.

If I did anything to wash a PSP, I would use distilled water since it will leave nothing behind when it evaporates.

General Discussion / FF7 Disk 2
« on: 2010-09-12 18:20:17 »
I haven't visited this site in a quite a long time, but I encountered a small problem, so I figured this would be the best place to solve it.

So, I decided to boot up FF7 the other day, when I made a shocking discovery: My disk 2 got scratched somehow, and some of the data on it is unreadable (flevel, and some of the cutscene files)!  Now, I figured that the game data would be the same across all three disks, so I was able to make a copy of flevel from disk 1, but the cinema files appear to be irreplaceable.

So here is my question: Are the cutscenes the only difference between the 3 disks? If so, does anybody know where I could get a copy of the disk 2 movies?

Alright, I'm just kidding, and I know this is a day late from April Fools :P... sorry if I got any hopes up.
Actually this is my first GIMP "photoshop" so since it was FF related I figured I'd post it here.

Wow that was not realistic at all. Somehow there was a magical sideways gravity that kept them glued to the vertical wall of the tower as they were falling and fighting for 3+ minutes.   Other than that small defiance of physics, it was pretty cool.

Look, I'm sorry for accessing your server to look at a private message you made. I realize now it was wrong of me to try to look at a message someone had made for someone else, and I regret what I did. Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?

You attempt to break into systems so often that minor things like that slip from your memory? :-D
Ohhhhh yeah, haha. That incident. What was it... 2, maybe 3 years ago? I've only ever attempted to "break into" one system--the one you generously provided both the address and username to (albeit apparently I noobed up the username). And we both know that I was only half-heartedly trying out of sheer boredom. And I do recall apologizing for that, so it's not like you can hold that against me forever.

[Edit] that rofl icon is really annoying :P

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll probably go with Ubuntu.

One that isn't case sensitive, Mr l33t hacker?

One that isn't case sensitive? I'm trying to fathom the joke, but my memory fails me. Does this have to do with something I said years ago?

This topic has probably been created about a million times, but what is the best linux for someone just starting out?

I want to switch to linux, but I'm not sure which one (so many choices!). People have told me to use Ubuntu, Slackware, and others, but I'm not really sure what the difference is between them. Is one faster than another? By the way, my system isn't exactly a powerhouse, so I want something that isn't too hardware demanding...

Any suggestions?

Yeah, N has really nice physics, and the programmers did an especially good job with wall jumping. N also features "ragdoll" physics when you die.  You should try it out when you have time, although if you're not into platformers, it can be difficult.

Anyway, those were pretty cool Mario levels I must admit. I wonder if they actually hacked the SNES rom to do that or built a look-alike game. Either way it is pretty interesting as you said.

Are you familiar with the platformer game, N?

Many of the user levels beat themselves, and with N, it's many, many times more complex then those mario levels. N has a fairly advanced physics engine, so the springs/blocks/enemies/etc. must be tuned just right in order for the character to dodge rockets/bullets and reach the goal without any user input.

If you download the game, go to the user levels, and try out the levels of type "DDA" (It says "DDA" to the right of the name of the level, under the catagory "Type"). The "DDA" games are the type that beat themselves. Many of them are incredible, such as the level "Kablizzy's Cavern Number Three" or "Tremble". Some of the self-beating levels require the user to hold down the left arrow key down the entire time, such as the level "Leftorium". In addition, the game has a built in level editor, should you want to try your own hand at the art.

RPGillespie

[Edit] Leftorium is one of the most intricately tuned of the self-beating levels. It is uncanny how many lasers fly at you that you barely dodge, thanks to the author's careful placement. Ridiculous. Try that one out, if you get the chance.

Here's a video of one of the DDA userlevels. It's kind of small, and if you were watching it in game there would be much more detail, but just rest assured that there are a LOT of bullets flying at this guy.

Can I sell your FF7 cuss-word patch on ebay if I do it for $500? At least then you won't be depressed... plus, I'll share the profit *wink wink*.

I kid!

Actually, the term "Indy game developer" caught my attention, as I have never heard that expression before. I actually read your entire blog, and I think that a game that actually teaches Japanese is ingenious. I mean, the only reason me or any of my friends ever wanted to learn japanese was so that we could understand what was going on in Japan-only games (SNES Fire Emblem, etc.).

I'll buy a copy of your game should you ever release it :-).

If you still live in the United States, try looking for civilian employment at the nearest Air Force Base to help you get on your feet. I worked at USAFA (Mitchell Hall and Hospital) doing logistics, quality control, and inventory management. There was also a position for computer management. Anyways, to the point, I made $11.50 an hour, with a $.50 automatic federal raise every 6 months you work there. There are benefits (health and something else, I think) but they didn't apply to me because I wasn't a legal adult. Here is a link to the civilian employment site:

https://ww2.afpc.randolph.af.mil/resweb/search_by_state_nlo.asp

You do not have to join the military, and there are openings in virtually every state (with an AFB). Good luck to you!

Completely Unrelated / Speech Comparison/Recognition
« on: 2007-07-26 00:44:51 »
This may seem like bit of an odd question, but I recently had this entertaining idea. I thought to myself, after reading the final Harry Potter book, that it might be neat to create a (Harry Potter-esque) game (or simply a game prototype in my case) that employs a microphone to control spell casting. In my mind, it didn't seem like too difficult a concept, seeing how Vista has a vast network of speech recognition software (I have windows XP, however).

Would this be possible easy somewhat feasible with the resources of a teenager? I was thinking either converting the inputted speech to words and doing string comparisons, but then I thought it would be much more efficient to compare it to a pre-recorded version of the spell. Any ideas?

...or at least Castle in the Sky was. Frankly, that was the first anime movie I have bothered to sit through, and it gave me the feeling that I had just beaten a really good RPG. Castle in the Sky in particular reminded me of Chrono Trigger (Zeal, etc.).

Anyway, are there any other good anime movies (I don't really want to get into a series) I should watch? I really don't watch anime, and nor do my friends, so I'm at a loss on what to watch next. If anyone knows of some other good ones out there like Castle in the Sky, let me know, please.
