Title: [FF8PC-Steam] GeDoSaTo Config v2.3 (Compatible with ReShade)
Post by: Mcindus on 2015-03-07 11:32:17
FF8 GeDoSaTo Config v2.3
by MCINDUS
Update: 9/04/2018

**BRAND NEW RELEASE!!
**ALL LANGUAGES AVAILABLE!!
**NOW COMPATIBLE WITH RESHADE!!

These Configuration Profile enable the use of GeDoSaTo in Conjunction with ReShade, Tonberry, and the Steam Overlay!  If you are using GeDo AND ReShade, make sure you use v2.3(r).  For the 'normal' GeDo standalone version, use version v2.3(g).

These configurations are for the PC 2013 and STEAM 2013 releases only

Features:
- Downsampling 2x (4k, etc.) for beautifully smooth polygons and text!
- Use in conjunction with ReShade for maximum effect!
- Set Anti-Aliasing type and quality (If using GeDo's AA, do NOT use ReShade's)
- Enable Depth-of-Field and AO settings! [BROKEN!! TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!]
- The ability to use Tonberry in conjunction with ReShade, Anti-Aliasing, and Downsampling!
- Enable Durante(SweetFX) or Asmodean Postprocessing effects
- Enable Steam Overlay along-side Tonberry without crashes!

*  Added more common resolutions to the FF8_Launcher profile that aren't included in GeDoSaTo by default.  Check there to enable them!
**  If you have an uncommon Refresh Rate (not 60Hz), you must list it in the FF8_Launcher profile!

Final Fantasy VIII has never looked this gorgeous!

Side-by-side comparison: (OLD)
(Look at the edges of objects to get a real idea of what the downsampling and AA are accomplishing)
(Lunatic Pandora Mods Featured)

There is no longer any need to disable the STEAM overlay when using Tonberry with GeDoSaTo.

Thanks to Peter Durante for GeDoSaTo

Special thanks to Kaldarasha and KyubiNemesis for giving me the inspiration to figure this out

Instructions:

1. Install GeDoSaTo (http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?page_id=582) ON YOUR "C:" DISK!!
*****
A. Users must go to the Github of GeDo, download the master fork as 'master.zip' here: https://github.com/PeterTh/gedosato
B. Manually create a NEW C:/GeDoSaTo/ folder.
C. Move the contents of the /pack folder (not the folder itself)
*****
2. Unpack FF8_GeDoSaTo_v2.3 wherever you like
3. Open your Proper Language "FF8_GDSTConfig_" folder
4. Drag the 'config' folder into your \GeDoSaTo parent folder and merge them. (Mine is C:\GeDoSaTo) This will add FF8_XX and FF8_Launcher folders and 'whitelist_user.txt' to your GeDoSaTo/config/ folder.)
5. Open GeDoSaToTool.exe as Administrator [must do this EVERY TIME you load FF8]
6. Open FF8_Launcher.exe, go to "Settings" and select your new resolution from the Drop Down!
(If you don't see your downsampling resolution, you can add it in GeDoSaTo: See below)

After you hit "PLAY", you will see text in the top left of the screen confirming your downsampling rate if you did everything right

**DO NOT ALT+TAB -- the game does NOT handle swapping resolutions well.  To avoid, use in windowed mode.
**DO NOT USE MULTIPLE MONITORS -- there is currently no way to select which monitor to use via GeDo, you must use a different overlay (AMD, NVIDIA, ETC.) to do so.

______________________________________

- To configure your own settings, click 'Edit Settings' in GeDoSaTo and choose:

'FF8_Launcher/GeDoSaTo.ini' to modify your rendering resolution and frequency.

'FF8_EN/GeDoSaTo.ini' for Graphical settings and to enable DoF and AO!
** [CURRENTLY NOT FUNCTIONING] To enable the DoF/AO "pluginOverride GenericDepthPlugin" command by removing the # before the command in the FF8_EN (or whatever language) profile in order for the DoF and AO settings to work.  Currently GeDo can't find the z-depth buffer information, so there's no way to find the hash for the DoF and AO, so it applies to the whole screen.  This -may- be fixed in the future, if anyone can find the hash value.**
______________________________________

Settings by default for v2.3(g) are:
Resolution = 3840x2160@60Hz (4k)
Scaling Method = lanczos
Anti-Aliasing = FXAA; Med (2)     (OFF in v2.3r)
Postprocessing = On; asmodean  (OFF in v2.3r)
______________________________________

To enable SweetFX and/or change Asmodean options:

Click "edit postprocessing" and choose your SweetFX settings for 'durante' -OR-
Go to GeDoSaTo/assets/post.fx for the 'durante' SweetFX options (open in notepad, etc.)

Click "edit alt. postproc." and choose your settings for 'asmodean' -OR-
Go to GeDoSaTo/assets/post_asmodean.fx for the 'asmodean' Postprocessing options

***CURRENT BUGS***
*Steam Overlay is currently Un-Clickable, but Big Picture Mode seems to work well.
*You -may- need to put the D3DCompiler_47.dll file into the /steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/ parent folder to get things to work correctly!
*Some players are having an issue where GeDoSaTo must be located on their C:\
 drive.

Happy Modding!

Nice tool, but i can't change my screen to 1440x900? Some bug?

Where are you trying to change it? You can just edit the main GeDoSaTo.ini file for FF8_EN by clicking 'edit settings' and selecting 'FF8_Launcher/GeDoSaTo.ini' (or 'FF8_Launch2/GeDoSaTo.ini' if you use RaW.)  Right now, its set at 2x 1920x1080 (3840x2160).  Add 2880x1800 (double your resolution) to the list like this:

# Graphics settings

# The actual rendering resolutions you want to use,
# and how many Hz you want the game to think they work at.
# REMOVE THE # SYMBOL BEFORE THE RESOLUTION YOU WISH TO USE
# SELECT ONLY ONE RESOLUTION
# format: renderResolution [width]x[height]@[hz]
clearRenderResolutions
renderResolution 2880x1800@60         <----- add this line with NO "#"(*put your real refresh rate if not 60hz)
#renderResolution 3200x1800@60
#renderResolution 3840x2160@60       <----- add "#" to this line to disable it
#renderResolution 4480x2520@60
#renderResolution 5120x2880@60
#renderResolution 7680x4320@60

Make sure you click 'save' and then close the window, but leave GeDoSaToTool.exe open.

Open the FF8 launcher now, and you should be able to select the new 2x resolution (2880x1800).

You MUST pick a multiple of your monitor's resolution!

=============

Another workaround:
You can also copy/paste this section just below the resolutions in FF8_Launcher/GeDoSaTo.ini (or FF8_Launch2/GeDoSaTo.ini for RaW users) like so:

# The resolution you want to downsample *to*.
# Should generally always be your output device pixel size and frequency.
# Writing something not supported by the display here will probably cause a crash.
# 0 = main monitor resolution
presentWidth 0
presentHeight 0
presentHz 60

**Just changing this in GeDoSaTo.ini's main settings won't apply due to the override needed for the resolutions, so make sure you add it to your FF8 Launcher settings ini file instead!

If this STILL doesn't work, try changing the 0's to your actual resolution (as well as Hz).

Let me know if this helped!

I managed to work, just installed in other directory

I love FFVIII in maximum quality. So in the settings i manage to put the pink area completed aliased, but now i can't.

How i can disable that square in upper right corner?

Wait a tick--does this GeDoSaTo also smooth out FFVIII's 2D backgrounds? Holy moly!

I'm actually loaded to the teeth with mods too... I guess I should do a vanilla screenshot comparison XD

I've actually tried this out before and it worked well. Downside for me is that my game lags at certain points once set at 1080p. Examples being in the final battle and using Rinoa's Wishing Star limit. Setting the resolution higher slows those scenes to a crawl. Still not sure why that happens. It's really a shame because I like this.

Hm... well, using a few tweaks, I seem to be able to broadcast on Steam just fine using GeDoSaTo and Tonberry!  I haven't had the chance to try this while getting an achievement, but it works!  The one downside is that you can't pull up the overlay using Shift+Tab or the game crashes.  I set my Steam Settings to not display any messages in the Overlay when I get chats or when I take a screenshot, but I can take screenshots to boot!

Let me know if you want to test this!

Are you making sure that GeDoSaTo is the first thing you open?  Make sure you open GeDoSaTo and THEN the FF8 launcher.  It might be having an issue with the latest version of RaW - I haven't updated to the latest version to make sure HextLaunch is working properly with it.

Also - make sure that the resolution is double whatever your monitor resolution is.  If your monitor is not 1920x1080, you're going to have to manually change the settings to some multiple of your monitors resolution in the FF8_Launch2/GeDoSaTo.ini pulldown in 'edit settings'.

--Just got an idea.  With HextLaunch now being the way you launch FF8 (the FF8+.exe), you should be able to use the regular config and NOT the RaW config. I'm going to test this right now.

thanks for answer, yes i lauch 1st gedosato and i can set the double resolution(main res is 1920x1080). I tried also the normal config but no luck...game launch in windowed mode! i tried also to disable full screen in launch option and game still launch in widowed but with window more "larger". I don't know what to do

Can you do me a favor and switch to the NON-RaW version and give it a try?  Let me know what happens.  If you still have the same problem, message me your FF8_EN/GeDoSaTo.ini and your FF8_Launcher/GeDoSaTo.ini so I can look through them.

Just saw onw thing, in you main post there is "- You will see text in the top left of the screen confirming your downsampling rate if you did everything right". well i don't get this message when i change the resolution in laucher

EDIT: i tried to launch the game from steam instead shortcut ff8+..game still in windowed mode. I tryed to disable full screen in launcher option and i got this:

Do you have multiple high resolutions avalable or just the 3xxx?  If you're not using the english version , try changing the name of FF8_EN to whatever your language .exe is in the GeDoSaTo 'config' folder!  Open the User Whitelist and change it there too.

Can you PM me your default GeDoSaTo.ini file?  not the FF8_EN/GeDoSaTo.ini file, just the normal GeDoSaTo main one.  There might be some conflicting setting at this point.  If you can't PM yet, you can also put it in a [ code ] [ / code ] (leave out the spaces) section so it wont flood the post if you post it here.

Yes sure! I got it working with the default launcher..but when i use the ff8+ or the hex for the add ons, always appears this Black square

I fixed the issue.  For me, I had to revert back to FF8_Launcher and then I made a fix for all languages.

Uninstall/Reinstall my mod using the new download:
1.  Delete the FF8_EN (or whatever language yours is.) folder in GeDoSaTo/config
2.  Delete the FF8_Launcher (and/or FF8_Launch2) folder in GeDoSaTo/config
3.  Delete the whitelist_user.txt file in GeDoSaTo/config
4.  Re-download the mod and select your proper language!
5.  Put all of the files in the 'config' folder into your 'GeDoSaTo/config' folder (or just merge the folders).

This should work like a beauty.  If GeDoSaTo is working correctly, you will only have one higher resolution to choose from (at different refresh rates)... so if you have a bunch of different ultra high resolutions that you can pick from (4xxx - 7xxx) etc., then you have the wrong files in the wrong places.

In other words:  Check the new release!  Download for RaW W04 fix!

Hi, new poster here. c:
I've managed to make most of the mods on this forum work without problems, but after working on this particular one for over a day now, I turn to you good folks for some help. At first I couldn't choose the resolution I placed into the FF8_Launcher config (3840x2400) but after updating RaW to it's latest version that's no longer an issue. My problem now is that when I try to play with the custom res the game launches in a small window with a larger black box over it (when I don't use FF8+.exe to launch, it's the same but without the overlying black box). When switching it from full screen to windowed in the launcher's options, the windowed mode gets much larger but still not ideal to play on. The tool definitely improves the gameplay on my native resolution (1920x1200) thanks to the SweetFX, but not being able to get the downsampling aspect of it to work is a bummer.

Edit: Downsamples correctly when I use the default 3840x2160 instead of the 3840x2400 I added, though I have to change my moniter's res to 1920x1080.

Hey guys.

Loving all the work that you do on here for FFVII, but I had to sign up as I cannot get this to work at all. I'm pretty sure I've followed the instructions right 3 times now, but when I launch the game Via FF8+, I have no option to select the higher resolution I set -up in the launcher settings. I don't know where I am going wrong now.

Any help would be great appreciated.

edit: Okay, scratch that. I enabled Anti-Aliasing, and now it's giving me the options.

It should only be giving you one new resolution option (at 3840x2160) with different refresh rates.  If it's giving you more, you've messed with your default GeDoSaTo.ini - make sure that is still default and if you want to change settings, change them in FF8_Launch/GeDoSaTo.ini or FF8/GeDoSaTo.ini  Some people try to mess with the default file to get things to work, but I recommend going in fresh.  Anti-Aliasing is already enabled if you put the FF8 and FF8Launch folders into the GeDoSaTo config folder.

Sorry, I missed this. I didn't have any resolution options at the time. All is fine now. A belated Thank You, anyways for offering some insight.

Not sure if you see my post if I modified my post above.

Anyways, everything is good and running perfect with all the other mods, except my battle rendered background look like this...

Any changes i've made have not effected anything else, yet I seem anything I do doesn't sort this out.

It this an issue relating to GeDoSaTo or possibly the Horizon Eden mod? I did leave a message on your youtube but though I might catch a response here quicker.

Thanks

Ah right. Well that explains it then. I won't deny that it would be good to implement what you have so far(mainly being that staring at pixelated backgrounds is offending my eyes), but of course it's up to you -I don't mind. I suppose you'll need someone other than yourself to see if they all working for other smoothly?

Hey Mcindus, first of all.. thx for all your mods! they are awesome and work great. The only on issue left is the black box at the right upper corner when i'm using GeDoSaTo. I've tryed your fix but with no luck! its not that big deal, I can switch to desktop and back to the game and the black box isnt there anymore... but it would be nice if I could fix that.

Hi McIndus, thank you for all your hard work. The issue I am having is that while using Gestado Raw Music is no longer working. The music in the opening cutscene worked and sound effects are working. But the rest isn't. So here's what I'm doing, starting up Gestado, then ff8+exe which is giving me the error  "Attempting to load file by name FF8.exe...failed". Then I start up the ff8_launcher and the game. So yea, no music, not sure what I'm doing wrong. When I installed Raw 04 I put the two filed in my ff8 directory then I ran the launcher as an administrator and selected DLPB's selection.

After you select DLPB's selection, you must change the version from 2000 to 2013, because the setting gets put back to 2000 by default.  Try reinstalling and go through the steps you described above - it sounds like you're on the right track.

Yesterday I read through the Roses and Wine thread so it must of been something like you said. I changed the INI to point to ff8_en or whatever instead of ff8.exe. Thank you McIndus.

Edit: Nevermind, I seem to have some other problem, I just verified this happens even with out GeDoSaTo installed. Though if any one has a clue and wants to chime in, it'd be appreciated.

So I'm having a problem, when I try to run FF8 (or FF7) with GeDoSaTo active, I get this message when the game actually starts (After clicking play on the launcher screen): "Failed to Create useful Direct3D device"

There is a black screen, a windows error box with that message, and the mouse is invisible. Hitting return or escape closes the screen out and returns to the launcher.

And to be clear, this is the Steam version. And I just updated to the latest GeDoSaTo.

You should be able to use it for the steam version. For the original PC release is Aali's driver enough, because it has the option to Downsample already implemented and supports any resolution. For SweetFX effects I recommend http://reshade.me/

Helllo Mcindus. First of all id like to say awesome job on all the mods. Im just having a lot of trouble getting this one to work. I updated to RaW final version then copied config folder and merged. Launch Gedosato or w.e and then the FF+ launcher and im not getting an option for the 2x res. I get a black console box that says something failed though. Not a huge deal but this mod is a nice bow on top of all the others. Hope you can help thanks.

Did you make sure you entered/used the proper resolution in the config file?  It replaces the 640x480 resolution, so when you open your resolution settings in FF8, the pull-down should have a list of your new available resolutions if you scroll to the bottom.  What is your monitor's resolution/refresh rate? Do you have a screenshot of your FF8 settings?  BTW the 'failed' is a normal part of how DLPB's HextLaunch tool works - it will say that until you hit 'play' in the launcher.

The rar file download has expired.  Can someone provide a link to a working download.  Also, many of the links for FF8 mods are expired.
The link takes me to 13tomidnight and at the top it says this domain name expired on 2/7/2016 and is pending renewal or deletion.

Not sure what you mean by UP.  I was able to get other mods installed and working.  I found other places to download the mods but not this one so it can work with SweetFX and Tonberry.  The game still looks a lot better so I'm cool with it.  Can't wait for FFIX to come out on steam.

Thanks Mcindus for updating that.  Much appreciated.  I also have a question for you.
I'm using Tonberry 2.04.
The collisions csv.  Does that go in the hasmaps file folder or directly into the Tonberry folder?

Can't wait to replay this game.  Also can't wait until FFIX comes out on Steam.  I check every now and then to see if it's available for purchase.
Also, is there a way to make a donation for your work?

Thanks again.

No problem, just wish I had the time to fix it sooner! (or you know... not lose my domain lol).  So, the files collisions.csv and hash2map.csv should both be in your tonberry folder and NOT in the hashmaps folder.  This will prevent many collisions between Project Eden, SeeD, etc.

And yes, there is a donate link in every main post of my other mods... but let me post it here to make it easy ;)
Donate! (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=5DQW7QCTRSA3J&lc=US&item_name=MCINDUS&item_number=696969&currency_code=USD&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF%3abtn_donateCC_LG%2egif%3aNonHosted)

Also - I think we might be able to use Tonberry with FFIX - and since the characters seem to have higher poly counts than in the original release, I have really high hopes for Tonberry/FF9 modding!

Enjoy your new playthrough!

I'm having some trouble using this with tonberry, every time I try to stat the game using both i get "An unknown exception has occurred"
I've tried disabling post processing, am I just missing something simple?

tobberry .dll files are in the root of ff8 steam folder, texture replacing works with out gedosato.
config file is installed to gedosato properly, and it works without the tonberry .dll files.

I downloaded the file and "unpacked" everything but I don't know where the .exe files are... Maybe this is a noob Q but all I have is the 1 file and it seems to already be setup as the instructions indicate I need to do... As in, when I extracted the files, once I click the language folder all three files referenced in the instructions are there ( ff8_EN, ff8 launcher, and whitelist.txt) . However I don't have anything else. Where is this GoDoSaToTool.exe and where do I put these files? Data folder? Game folder? I need a push in the right direction... I'm accustomed to using mod managers and Load orders and I've already installed Tonberry and Sweetfx so now I want to make sure they are compatible and that everything else I install is as well. Can someone walk me through the entire process of installing GoDoSaTo for an Idiot?

There is an external link for GeDoSaTo if you scroll down to 'Instructions' on the main page here - http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15988.msg225101#msg225101  Click the "Here" link in step 1.  Also, I don't believe you can use the SweetFX plugins that were created for FF8 from the Steam forums AND Tonberry - but when you download GeDoSaTo, it has it's own SweetFX selections internally that you can enable (which are very close if not identical to the options in a regular SweetFX build).  Anyway, download from the link I provided on the OP and give it a go.

... I realize now, that HERE icon is what contains the bulk of GeDoSaTo... Thanks for replying back respectfully and I apologize for not paying attention..

However.... I have now installed this MOD and the new Tonberry 2.04 following all of the instructions in regards to its installation but I am having no change once I install the Essential MODS referenced in the Tonberry 2.04 Thread (Eden, Seed Reborn, Triad, etc...) I put there textures in the Textures folder within the FF8 Directory and the 2 separate types of hash files within the referenced Tonberry Folder within the FF8 Directory. The game starts up but none of the MODs are active. I find the Enhanced Tonberry MOD is easier but there is something I have missed... I have just reinstalled the game and am going to start from scratch. would you be willing to walk me through step by step for these 6-7 MODs? I am running a 4k tv as a monitor and want this to look as good as possible on 65". I don't fully understand the GeDoSaTo Scaling because when I read the description I'm thinking I need to be using the highest resolution option (7680x4320) because its x2 my native resolution... But that doesn't give me full screen, just a small window. But when I select the 3840x2160 option it works but I feel like it didn't improve anything..

The above is just the beginning of my frustration. Ive spent that last 4 days circling my chair and researching the net trying to find some current tutorials on Tonberry 2.04 and MODs but there isn't a tutorial that gives the blank slate install of FF8 and MODs as of 2016. Everything is based on the original Tonberry and the new Tonberry gives updates and references the original as to how it operates but if that was the case then I wouldn't be here. I will add that if it weren't for me trying to run GeDoSaTo I would just use the original Tonberry v1.5 and install the MOD textures and be done with it but I don't want to have constant crashes and I want Steam Overlay active.

I know this is a small thing I am making into a big issue but I'm tired and ready to play and am eager to get this game up and running the way you play yours!

PM me or something for other lines of communication like email if you aren't opposed to the sort.

Thanks again Mcindus

Try going to "Edit Settings" and find "interceptOnlySystemDlls". Set it to "true" and see if GeDoSaTo will work then. It works for me. Though, the text in the menu and title screen have some strange artifacts. But that's about it.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem as Andyus86 it would seem, except he wasn't kind enough to share his solution  :|

I've gone through every single post and checked all my settings but I'm still having the same problem.

The game is launching in a small window (with a fuzzy resolution) despite having fullscreen enabled. If I disable fullscreen, the game launches at the correct resolution in a window with a black square covering the top right corner.

Changing the GeDoSaTo default settings to force fullscreen does indeed force fullscreen but at the wrong resolution. Log files aren't showing any errors. I have the latest version of this, Tonberry enhanced, RaW. I installed all these mods this week, so everything is fresh and was tested and working great - only GeDoSaTo is causing problems.

Any help would be so much appreciated - I'm so close to the perfect setup!

Thanks in advance :)

Not sure if you ever figured it out, but I'll post how I fixed it since I ran into the same problem. Maybe this'll help others in the future. From what I tested, the game doesn't seem to like the resolution "3840x2160" or higher for me when using GeDoSaTo. Even though it used to work just fine and still works fine if I use Nvidia's DSR instead. So I activated the resolution "3200x1800" in the config file, used that, and the game runs the way it should. You still get the perks of downscaling/postprocessing effects and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the two resolutions with this game.

Well it's me again... this time in this topic.

I still can't get CRT post processing working :(
I changed some settings in the config because of strange things happening (f.e. in config "durante" pp ist enabled, in game it says it's "asmodean", etc. o.O) and now the game crashs when loading with an unknown error...

So, would someone mind to share settings?

PS: If I use the Addons (Hardcoremode, etc.) and therefore a new Launcher, do I have to edit GeDoSaTo'S whitelist or would it still work because it's the same name of the *.exe?

Hello Mcindus,

Thank you for everything you have done with this game!  I'm currently using all available mods and they are working great.  However, the only snag I've run into is the GeDoSaTo mod.  I feel like i'm doing everything correct according to your instructions.  However, I am unable to see my "new" resolution of 3840x2160 in the Launcher.  I do not know if i'm missing a step or not.  Pretty much I downloaded the executable.  Downloaded the config v1.1 file.  Copy and pasted them in the correct folders and ran the .exe.  I haven't made any changes to any of the settings in the app.  I'm currently running my desktop resolution at 1920x1080 @ 144Hz.  Do i need to change the renderResolution Hz to 144 from 60 in the .ini file?  Also I'm a bit confused with what is written at the bottom of the FF8 Launcher .ini file
# MANDATORY #
# FF8 Queries it's resolution through the launcher, so this is neccessary
# In the launcher, choose the new downsampled resolution!
# This overrides the 800x600 resolution in the Launcher with your new resolution
# 0 = override disabled
overrideWidth 800
overrideHeight 600

Does this mean that the 800x600 resolution in the launcher becomes the new resolution of 3840x2160, and so I have to choose 800x600?  Or should I be seeing 3840x2160 in the list of resolutions in the launcher?

Any help would be great.  I have yet to install the RaW W06 yet to avoid any issues.

Hi Guys,
I recently bought FFVIII on stream and was really happy to see so many mods to enhance the game. Up until now i think everything is working fine, here is a list of mods I installed:
-Rebirth Flame (HD character models) v1.2
-Tripod (HD triple triad) v1.1
-Project Eden (HD backgrounds)
-HorizonPack (HD World map textures)
-SeeD Reborn (HD menu overhaul) v3.2
-Lunar Cry (HD enemy upscale) v1.2
-Tonberry Mod (Base mod) v2.04 enhanced

-FF8 Controller Button by mcindus
-Replacement FMVs by LeonhartGR
-Roses and Wine, DLPBs Original Soundtrack (audio replacement)
-BattlefieldPack (battelfield upscale) v2.0
-Apocalypse (Boss upscale) v1.1

like Infin1tyZer0 i did everything explained to get GeDoSaTo  to work, but it just isnt :-\

Im running on Windows 7 (gtx 970)and launching the game via steam, but there is no 3840x2160 option available. selecting 800x600@60hz doesn't change anything either.I also noticed that running the game on 1920x1080@60hz fullscreen (without GeDoSaTo) gives me a 4:3 display with black borders, while running it on 800x600 ( still without GeDoSaTo) at least stretches it.
I used this video on yt as reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBHDJPnAH2A and the emblem on the main screen never looked that sharp for me.
Is there something Im missing? would be nice if someone could help :)
Greetings

edit: forgot to mention, I installed RaW W06 and I can't find a FF+.exe

Are you also receiving this Error "The program can't start because D3DCOMPILER_47.dll is missing from your computer." after you try running the launcher from the Final Fantasy VIII steam folder?

I double checked at that specific driver is in the GeDoSaTo folder.  I don't know what is causing this error.  I hope someone can help us with this problem LoL.

Hey Tenaka89,

I believe I have figured out the issue.  After doing more research in regards to that error message I was getting, what I did was just copy and paste the D3DCOMPILER_47.dll file that is located in the GeDoSaTo folder, and put it in the Final Fantasy VIII folder in the steamapps/common folder.  I didn't get the error when I ran Launcher.exe and now I see the new resolutions in the drop down.  Hopefully this works for ya!

Hey, It's been a while but i've come back to play FF8 for the 50 millionth time.
I've had all the mods before, got them all running again except gedosato
For some reason i cannot get it working this time.

I've installed it the correct way (making sure the visual studio is installed first, and making sure secure boot is off as im running windows 10)
Then proceeded to install gedosato, then i put in Mcindus configs + i changed the resolutions to be 2x my native resolution (my monitor is 2560x1440@144hz)
so i changed it to 5120@2880@144
Sure enough i get the options in game to change to those resolutions with (59, 60, 120, 144hz)
However when i launch the game it crashes and i get an unknown exception has occured,
If i turn gedosato off the game launches fine on native res
if i use gedosato to have the native resolution the game launches to a black screen until i press escape then the game crashes.

Last time i got this working i believe i was on win 8 or win 8.1 and everything worked flawlessly
However i had a typical 1080p@60hz monitor last time
I believe gedosato is not working properly, does anyone know a fix for my issue? Thanks

Dug a little deeper and found that i'm having this problem constantly

Setting it to true fixed that issue, Thank you.
Although i'm still not sure if it's working correctly, i remember last time i used gedosato it used to tell you it was downsampling when u first launched the game
Now it's not doing that, it's also in windowed screen and the resolution doesn't look so great.

Edit

After changing the in game settings so that full screen is disabled
(keep aspect ratio doesn't seem to make a difference)
it launches to a windowed full screen, and the resolution looks better. I use MSI After burner overlay to monitor temps/etc for other games
with gedosato resolution set it makes the writing super small on msi afterburner overlay, which makes me think the resolution has been set right
but there is definately no confirmation of the downsampling by gedosato
quote mcindus from pg1 "You will see text in the top left of the screen confirming your downsampling rate if you did everything right"

Looking at the configs everything seems to be right, i've changed the presentwidth/height to 0 & hz to 144
theres no more errors in the logs.
Just no confirmation from Gedosato on the upper left makes me feel it's not working, plus being in full screen windowed annoys me
borderless windowed would be fine (i also edited the ini so that it forces borderless windowed but that didn't work

i also use RaW v06 i don't know if this would cause any issues seeing it doesn't use a seperate launcher anymore

And this is where GeDoSaTo does weird things depending on the user. Even I have issues going past the default resolution Mcindus has set. And it only appears to do it with FF8. No worries on RaW affecting anything. It doesn't. But, sadly, I haven't figured out a solution for why it doesn't work properly with certain resolutions.

Hey Josh, if you're using Win10 (which I didn't catch before) - have you tried installing directx9c from here?

As far as the windowed mode, etc - i'm not sure.  You might have to roll back to an older version of gedosato?  I believe either the gedosato update changed how things are handled (letting you know the resolution works, etc.) but I haven't tested any of this in forever.  I've been extremely busy as an environment artist for an MMORPG and have little time to even respond to posts.  I hope any of this helped you!

Hey, this seems great and all (haven't tried it yet; just installed GeDoSaTo), but could you ditch the ad.fly link? I mean, sites like that are just plain dangerous to less-savvy (and even some more-savvy) internet users. I had at least three different fake download pages (one of which wanted me to enable notifications for it before it would let me "download") before I hit the proper MEGA link.

Link removed. ~Covarr

-_-  there's a reason I have an adfly link.  These mods are free, and I spent hours upon hours of my life creating/editing/compiling the mods that I've worked on for no return.  You going through the ad process is pretty much a 'thank you' to me for the free mod.

It's pretty disrespectful for you to just post a direct link to my mod without my permission first.  Please take that link down.

I do agree however, that Adfly has become kind of predatory.  I'm not sure what else out there works well - so maybe i'll have to go back to my old linkbucks links.  I wasn't having any complaints with those.

I spent a few hours this past weekend tinkering with this until I got it to work exactly how I wanted!!

Updating the OP with the newest version!!!

Fixes:
- Make sure you list the proper Frequency of your Output Device in the FF8_Launcher Profile!  (example: 59Hz, 144Hz, etc.)
- There is pretty decent Steam Overlay functionality, so this may enable us to use the Overlay along-side Tonberry!  I've been taking screenshots like a madman.

EDIT*********
Hm.  It looks like I was able to simplify a bit of this.  Going to release an update soon, but you can use this profile in the meantime. :)

You don't need to disable fullscreen in the launcher - for some reason, that was giving me issues before and now it's fixed.  The only thing the launcher actually needs is the Resolution Override selection.  I'll also be attempting to get the mouse to work in overlay mode.

Could you clarify this a bit for me?  Do you mean that you have to put it in your \GeDoSaTo folder and merge the config folders?  If so, I have that in the 'directions' on the main post and in the .txt file in the download.  If you mean that you can't install GeDoSaTo anywhere other than the C: drive, then I wouldn't know a workaround for that.

I do know that a lot of problems are resolved by copying the D3DCompiler_47.dll and placing it in the steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII parent folder, so that might be something to look into.

ALSO:

NEW RELEASE! - Check the main post!

- Fixed some bugs and got rid of some erroneous stuff that might produce errors.
- Added common resolution options to the 'FF8_Launcher' profile that aren't included in GeDoSaTo by default.  You must select them manually.

Current bugs:  Steam Overlay works but it un-clickable.  Some people have been able to use Big-Picture mode effectively in other games, but I'm not sure this is something we can fix with this version of GeDoSaTo.

Future release:  Working on finding the hashing information for the shaders, etc. to enable AO, DoF, and Bloom.  Also would like to prevent the UI from being affected by Post Processing.  We'll see how all that goes, because it's something I can rarely get to.

EDIT:
Oops.... i might have broken it.  I'll fix it tonight. - just kidding. was some testing I was doing with mouse settings :D

I have to place the whole GeDoSaTo folder direct in the C: drive, ( like this C:\GeDoSaTo ) otherwise I can't change the resolution any higher then 1080p in the launcher if I place the folder else where... for example in the steam/FF8 folder on another drive.

Another update!

So, I'm pretty sure this is as thorough as it comes.
Still haven't figured out how to click on the downsampled Steam Overlay UI, but Big Picture works!

I've managed to figure out how to enable DoF and AO using the pluginOverride command and the GenericDepthPlugin - so if you want to enable them, you must remove the # symbol from the command in the FF8_EN (or whatever your language is) GeDoSaTo profile.

I think i'll be tweaking my own Asmodean shader setup that I'll be sharing with the community at a later date... but.. until then...

Check the OP for version 2.2!

I have to place the whole GeDoSaTo folder direct in the C: drive, ( like this C:\GeDoSaTo ) otherwise I can't change the resolution any higher then 1080p in the launcher if I place the folder else where... for example in the steam/FF8 folder on another drive.

Does this still happen if you place D3DCompiler_47.dll in your FINAL FANTASY VIII parent folder?

I've tried to place the D3DCompiler_47.dll in to the Final Fantasy VIII Steam folder but still no luck, even if I run everything (Including FF8_EN.exe and FF8_Launcher.exe) in administrator mode.. I still have to place the GeDoSaTo folder on the C: drive. It's not a big deal, I'll just leave the GeDoSaTo folder on the C: Drive, everything else works just fine!

Thanks alot!

Leaving my little feedback.
I couldn't see any new higher resolution in the launcher menu. Then i copied 'D3DCompiler_47.dll' in to the Final Fantasy VIII Steam folder. I could see the new resolutions in the menu, but the game wouldn't load (regardless of my choice, including the basic 1920x1080). Then i moved the GeDoSaTo folder in C like Fendera did and that fixed it.

I've tested 3840x2160. Looks gorgeous. Then i've tried 5760x3240 (triple the native size of my monitor). The game launches but in a very tiny window that can't be made bigger. Am i missing something? My PC can't handle a downsampling like this? Not that it matters really. I'm totally fine with how it looks already.

Little side note: on 3840x2160 i've noticed a couple of veeery little 'scratches' in the status menu (Seed reborn italian version). But don't worry Mcindus, they are litterally a couple, barely noticeable and only in that part of the menu (everything else looks normal just as in 1920x1080), so we don't need to worry about that ;)

And great job on this GeDoSaTo tutorial! Loving it, especially for the antialiasing.
Thank you once again for making this awesome game even prettier :)

Little update on this: after some tests i've realized that GeDoSaTo is causing the game to crash sometimes (in various and different moments, like at the beginning of a cutscene, after saving, when a battle event triggers etc).

The message showing when crashing is 'An unknown exeption has occurred'. I've googled that a bit and it seems this could be linked to other stuff and not GeDoSaTo, but then again, i don't have this problem when playing without GeDoSaTo so i'm pretty positive this is the source of the problem, at least in my case.

Anyway, i tried some "fixes" suggested in steam forum (play offline to prevent cloud syncro, set the FF8 launcher to CPU1 afinity and 'High Priority' from the task manager). It still crashes with GeDoSaTo.

Anyone knows a fix to this? Otherways i'll have to play without GeDoSaTo. That would be a pity, but FF8 with all the mods still looks amazing :)

Try tweaking some of the settings in gedosato... things like 'loadd3dearly' etc.  Then save before a cutscene and see what happens with the different settings.   I've spent HOURS turning things off/on in sequence to get this far... so that's kind of the process.  The one that might actually fix things could be what works for ffxiii, which is the 'force downsampled resolution always' or something to that effect.  Anyway... good luck!

To be 100% sure the problem is fixed i would need to play for a good ammount of time after each change in the settings (i can't be so lucky to fix it on the first attempt). That could take a lot of time, and spoil the gaming experience in the process. So i think i'll do a couple of tests then i'll just play without gedosato in this run. Thank you anyway :)

Hello,

I have a problem with this mod, It's easier to see the problem than to explain it:

when I launch GeDoSaToTool before start game (resolution 2560x1440):

(https://thumb.ibb.co/kEyGV6/Screen_ff8_1.jpg) (https://ibb.co/kEyGV6)

when i don't launch GeDoSaToTool before start game (same resolution as before):

(https://thumb.ibb.co/mZX4Hm/Screen_ff8_2.jpg) (https://ibb.co/mZX4Hm)

I can see the problem even during the game and I haven't touched any mod settings of the default ones.

Thank you

I have a problem with this mod, It's easier to see the problem than to explain it:

when I launch GeDoSaToTool before start game (resolution 2560x1440):

(https://thumb.ibb.co/kEyGV6/Screen_ff8_1.jpg) (https://ibb.co/kEyGV6)

when i don't launch GeDoSaToTool before start game (same resolution as before):

(https://thumb.ibb.co/mZX4Hm/Screen_ff8_2.jpg) (https://ibb.co/mZX4Hm)

I can see the problem even during the game and I haven't touched any mod settings of the default ones.

Thank you
Marco

It's the DoF. You can either lower the value or turn it off in GeDoSaTo. That should fix the issue you're having.

I seem to be having the same problem as Falkenauge123

We solved his issue by updating his .NET framework, installing GeDoSaTo into the C: drive, and putting the D3DCompiler_47 file into the FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folder.
Let me know if that helps!  You also have to make sure that if you're using windows 10, that you disable a drive boot setting in your BIOS.  Check the GeDoSaTo website for more info on that.

Thanks for the advice, sadly putting D3DCompiler_47 into my FF8 folder didn't work, .NET Framework is up to date and my PC doesn't support secure boot, I'm still getting the same exact error using the installer. However, I followed ianbollinger's advice on GitHub, copied the pack folder and it works.

NEW RELEASE! - Check the main post! (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15988.0)

Just updated the mod for everyone!!!  Fixed the default resolution settings and set them to 3840x2160@60Hz!

It is now compatible with reshade and all languages.  Just grab the version you want!
v2.3g - standalone (for use without ReShade) - only use with ReShade if you have a BEAST of a GPU/CPU
v2.3r - ReShade Compatible

Unless I use GeDo to find the blinking eye hashes, etc., this is probably going to be my last GeDoSaTo update.  Thanks!

*I highly recommend running GeDo in 'windowed' or 'fullscreen windowed' mode due to alt+tab crashes.
**Easiest way to install GeDo - go to the github, download the master.zip file, and then make a new folder on your C:\ drive called C:\GeDoSaTo\ and copy the contents of the /pack folder from master.zip into that new GeDoSaTo folder.

I can't find any way to complete this step

"3. Open your Proper Language "FF8_GDSTConfig_" folder"

There is no FF8 folder in GeDoSaTo!

You have to download the config files from the main post!  Once you've installed GeDoSaTo, download my files, put them in C:/GeDoSaTo/config/ and you should be able to run the game.

Each time I run the game it starts in windowed mode. Is that just a downside to using GeDoSaTo? I have many mods installed, since I bought the Pandora pack and even some mods that weren't included, so of course its always possible for one of those to be the cause. But I figured I'd ask here since I doubt graphics mods are preventing my game from going full screen. Any help or tips would be appreciated.

This happens when using two monitors I think?  But if you want to fix this, you can make sure you have 'fullscreen' selected in the normal game launcher, and then open your GeDoSaTo main config and force the fullscreen mode -- there are a few choices, so i'm sure a combination of these should fix your issue.  i think running things in fullscreen windowed might work?  what resolution are you trying to run the game in?  Have you selected your higher resolution in the FF8 launcher?

Well, I am using a laptop with a GTX1070 so I can't really remove that monitor even if I am extending to a 2nd screen so I hope that is not causing problems. I do have Full Screen and keep aspect ratio on in the FF8 launcher settings, however only with fullscreen disabled in the FF8 launcher, do I even reach near-fullscreen. I can get it to go fullscreen but with a border, which is reasonable. I played with the GeDoSaTo settings and tried different kinds of false/true for fullscreen and borderless fullscreen but I can't seem to get it working still. If Bordered fullscreen is the only kind of fullscreen compatible with the mods then it is a necessary evil and totally worth it, but I figured I'd ask the community here first, since I only recently read up on this stuff. But thanks for the info, If you have other things to try to potentially fix fullscreen then it would be appreciated, if not, I still greatly appreciate the help.

Edit: judging by videos I see on YouTube using these mods, I won't be surprised if bordered fullscreen is the only working way. It's likely out of most people's control anyway, considering the game is like 20 years old and released on Windows XP and I am now on Windows 10 with hardware that is way more advanced than required.

Edit 2: It seems the game goes into fullscreen fine without GeDoSaTo enabled/running. Hmm

Edit 3: So I figured, why not just avoid using GeDoSaTo all together if it isn't needed, so I installed ReShade and some of the mods no longer work. I assume its due to some dxgi or d3d9 dll being overwritten by ReShade. Is there a simple fix to get the mods working again or do I have to reinstall and edit config files all over again? Sorry for all the questions

Edit 4: Simply running the Lunatic Pandora installer for a few seconds for the d3d9.dll to extract and replacing it over the ReShade 3.0 generated d3d9.dll fixed the mods again.

1 - I know that I use two monitors, and the only way for me to get fullscreen with gedo is to only have it on my main monitor.  Also, I was able to force borderless fullscreen by having fullscreen disabled in the launcher, but borderless fullscreen forced in the gedo setup.  also, if you alt-tab while it's forced borderless, you'll get a crash.

2 - yep, gedo can be a bit of a pain, but it really improves the overall edge definition of the text and all characters, giving better than AA results.

3 - I don't always use it, but I do always have reshade enabled.

4 - ReShade will work -- especially the reshade mod config i provide, but you have to install the OpenGL version of the .dll's because it will overwrite the tonberry d3d9 file (which injects all textures) if you pick the dx version.  i suspect the opengl version merely works because the steam version is probably using some version of aali's driver on the backend

Hmmm, tried again and it didn't work for me. I wonder if it has to do with my laptop or maybe its due to Nvidia DSR. But imo Nvidia DSR + ReShade does exactly what I want. Of course GeDoSaTo has way more features and resolutions though. And you are 100% correct, ReShade with OpenGL worked awesomely. I know you provided ReShade with your GeDoSaTo config, but I just prefer configuring it through the in-game menu, the text menus are kinda confusing. But yeah, with all these mods and the installer you've made, everything just works awesomely. Considering how old these guides, installers and videos are, they were done very well to where they still hold up months/years later. I'm used to guides where you have to figure out stuff on your own and your own workarounds because windows updates and GPU driver updates start moving stuff around haha

Hy,

I need help for this step please "C. Move the contents of the /pack folder (not the folder itself)". What does it mean? Where do I have to move it? Should I delete it?

Thanks for response

"move the contents" means move all of the stuff from INSIDE the pack folder into the NEW gedosato folder.

Hello!

I'm super happy with Mcindus Lunatic pandora pack, unfortunately though I'm having a problem getting gedosato's downsampling to work.

It "worked" the first time I launched FF8, but when I selected one of the downsampling resolutions the game started in a very small window so I had to quit and restart the launcher, and since then I've not been able to see any of the new downsampling resolutions in the settings.

Checked the gedosato Log files and found this error when I choose the downsampling resolution:

FF8launcher_en
-> ERROR 7 creating hook for Direct3DCreate9Ex, target: 6820B06C, dll: 10000000

*repeated for a few lines*

as it is now if I start ff8_launcher.exe I don't get any messages in the log, if I start FF8_en.exe I get:

===== installation directory: C:\GeDoSaTo\
WARNING: no rendering resolutions specified in ini
hkIDirect3DSwapChain9::GetPresentParameters
===== end =

Tried creating a new gedosato folder in C: from the master with the ff8 config files but nothing changes
Tried also pasting the D3DCompiler_47.dll in ff8 root.
Tried adding the Ultra_launcher to the gedosato User list and it doesn't give any messages in the log same as FF8Launcher

the only thing I'm not sure it's if I installed RaW just before it stopped working or after, could that have interfered?

I can get the gedosato diag to show while in game and it says with post effect are on but then "no undersampling"

Not sure what else to try! It's a shame because it really looks nice with the mods but knowing it could look even better gives this missing out vibes that kind of spoils it!

Thanks anyway for the work,

Cheers
Alex

There are a few settings in the GeDoSaTo config that you can modify. try loading d3d dll's early, etc. there are a few things there to try to enable/disable if you're having issues. Let me know if one of them works!

Hi Mcindus, Thanks for coming back quickly!

I've tried enabling Load3d3early, forcepresres and forcealwaysdsres but it didn't seem to fix it.

I've pasted the current settings below, I was wondering if it's something that has to do with the FF8 folder rather than gedosato? As it did show me the DS resolutions the first time I fired it and I'd guess replacing Gedosato's folder with a new one would have fixed it?

Also I'm not sure about the part in gedosato's ff8launcher config, is that list of resolutions appliable to the game launcher or is it for the actual game? intrigued by that 1280x720 override command..

# Compatibility Settings

# Forces the constant reporting of the downsampling resolution in all applicable
# scenarios - a small selection of games needs this to show the DS resolutions
forceAlwaysDownsamplingRes true

# Emulate exact flipping behaviour
# requires some extra performance/memory,
# but may be important for some games to work
emulateFlipBehaviour false

# Restricts interception to only system dlls
# might increase compatibility with 3rd-party injectors, but decrease stability
interceptOnlySystemDlls true

# Force disables Steam in-game overlay from getting loaded into the process
# which caused some games to crash, even if it was disabled in Steam settings
preventSteamOverlay false

# Loads Steam overlay early
loadSteamOverlayEarly true

# Loads D3D dlls early - may cause some games to recognize GeDoSaTo which wouldn't otherwise
loadD3DEarly true

# Forces the present resolution to be set, regardless of what the game requests
# usually only makes sense in conjunction with game-specific plugins
# for games with resolution limits
forcePresentRes true

# For games which use strange methods to query resolutions,
# injecting a new one might not work. In such cases, you can try replacing an
# existing resolution. E.g. "overrideWidth 800", "overrideHeight 600" to replace 800x600
# 0 = override disabled
overrideWidth 0
overrideHeight 0

# GenericDepthPlugin options
# zBufCompatibilityFlag : bypasses d3d9 Clear flags (possible values: 2/3/6/7) <-- try this first if no AO shows up
# zBufClearIndex        : delays the bypass by x number of iterations <-- to fix potential flickering issues (usually 1/2/3 is fine)
zBufCompatibilityFlag 0
zBufClearIndex 0

# Override the plugin selection process to always select the given plugin
# example: pluginOverride GenericDepthPlugin
pluginOverride None

Make sure you go through the list in the launcher and select your new supersampling resolution (4k, etc.) from there. It overrides the 1280 configuration. also, there should be /GeDoSaTo/config/FF8_EN/ and /config/FF8_Launcher/ that you're using. The Launcher file contains the resolutions. IF GeDo is successful, you should see the resolutions available in the Launcher, and no 1280 (I believe).

Another route: Do you happen to use Nvidia? If so, you can set DSR in the Nvidia settings and then choose a downsampling resolution that way.

Thanks for coming back!
though I just did a clean reinstall of ff8/pandora/gedosayo and got the downsampling to work! So as I suspected as I went on installing Roses and wine I afterward lost all the DS options from the menu. Plus now I get both soundtracks playing at the same time :?
I’m trying to reinstall only pandora to see if that brings it back to normal..

When I could use the downsampling I had a problem with the fullscreen option. It would just open in a tiny window.. any ideas?

Cheers!

Ok reinstalling the pandora pack didn’t fix it so fortunately I’ve made a back up of the FF8 folder. Swapping the back up instead of the RaW version means I can select the DS resolutions again!

Not sure what it is that roses & wine does to stop the DS options from showing..

Good news!

Fixed the missing resolutions by adding FF8_Launch2 and FF8_Ultra_Launcher to gedosatos user list.

I had a problem so that both midi and RaW music playing at the same time, reinstalling RaW fixed it as there was a problem in the dmusic folder.

Only thing is a bit weird atm is the relation between using gedosatos Force fullscreen/Force Borderless or the one from the ff8 launcher.
The only usable combination that works for me is Force fullscreen off, Force borderless on, and fullscreen off in the launcher settings.

Also to add to all the weirdness if I choose one of the DS resolutions the gedosato diag text is super tiny -that suggests there's some kind of downsampling. Anyway the text shows "not downsampling"  :o

it does look fairly good anyway!

@Mcindus

have you been able to get reShade to work with GeDoSaTo?

In a way that you can force reshade to load through Gedo thus allowing you for force reshade filters to avoid the user interface via injectVSHash that relates to the user interface layer of the game.

I'm not finding much help else ware.
