Troubleshooting / Multiple Installations Question
« on: 2015-07-05 17:30:28 »
Hi folks, long time no post - hows it going? :P

I apologise if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it if that's the case. As the title suggests, I've got a question about whether or not I'll run into problems with multiple installations of VII. I own a physical copy of the PC '98 version as well as a Steam copy. The Steam copy is installed and I don't want to convert it to mod (I'd rather keep the achievement and cloud saving functionality).

Will I run into problems if I install the original version aswell? This would obviously be to make use of mods. Ideally a person who's done this before will be able to answer. I can't remember if this is something I've actually done before back when the Square Enix store initially released it in 2012. I guess if nobody has an answer I can just go ahead and try it out, but I'm worried it'll bork if they share registry values or something.

Cheers, hope you're all doing well :)

Gameplay / Analogue controller support?
« on: 2012-01-25 16:17:57 »
Lately I feel like I've been spamming this board slightly with niggling issues, so I thought I'd round it off with this one.

It's been years since I've played FF7 from start to finish, but for some reason my old love for the game was totally rekindled yesterday and I can't stop playing it. I have dipped in and out to see what mods have looked like, but usually end up stopping on the cargo ship (I don't know why, I always seem to stop playing there). The only (and I really mean only) huge thing that's bothering me playing it now is the awkward D-pad controls.

I realise that the original FF7 never actually had analogue support, so it may be totally out of the question. If it is, then...

FF8. What's the dealio there? The original had analogue support, and if the PC uses the same/ similar files, it should certainly be possible. There would obviously need to be some sort of plugin to properly map the controls.

I'd be willing to actually learn and have a look myself, but I don't have a clue where the data for the control mechanisms are stored. Somewhere in the .exe?

So in Aerith's death scene, I have a slight niggling problem that I've never mentioned before because it's so damn inconsequential.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but here goes.

Watch the FMV. Skip straight to around 0:45 if you can't be bothered watching the bit before it. In the PSX version, the music begins at almost precisely the exact moment the materia hits the ground, creating what I think is a very emotional effect.

In the PC version, there is a delay. And not just with FF7 music. Even with the horrible original MIDI, there is a delay of about 1 second before the music starts.

Is there any way to fix this? I know the music isn't attached to the video in this instance, so what would we have to edit in order to make it right? Is it even possible?

General Discussion / Qhimm.com linked in a PCWorld Article
« on: 2012-01-19 13:38:59 »
Being that this place likes to be kept "quiet" in some ways, I thought people would be interested to know that PC World wrote an article telling people how to install the game using Aali's driver as well as the NPC Reconstruction project.

See here.

There are quite a few tracks from games or even full OST's beyond Final Fantasy that I've been listening to recently, because they're made of win.

I thought it would be fun to make a thread with some music thrown around (remixes also, if you so wish). The aim is not to focus on Final Fantasy too much, because we've had tons of those threads before and let's face it... we all know and love them!

If you feel the need to share a FF song though, go ahead.

I have a few:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (What a soundtrack!!!)

Detroit
Icarus
And my favourite: LIMB Clinic

I urge you, if you haven't already, to listen to this soundtrack.

Sonic Generations (Because Sonic music is awesome)

End Medley - Almost makes me tear up from nostalgia.
Big Arms - Might be my favourite. Awesome.
Speed Highway Classic - Classic Sonic technorock fun.

Rayman Origins

Land of the Livid Dead - Yes, it's Ennio Morricone.
Sea of Serendipity
I've forgotten what this ones called.

Completely Unrelated / PS3 Games: Any recommendations?
« on: 2011-12-28 15:46:30 »
At the moment, I'm in a fantastic position to abuse my library of PS3 games and add some new ones. I quit my job early December because of uni exams and I have a bit of money saved up.

I would really appreciate any opinions on what's worth finding in a bargain bin somewhere, and also opinions on some of the games I thought were exceptional (these can be considered my recommendations).

I have the following:

-Final Fantasy XIII (obviously)
-Bayonetta (mental, but fun)
-Borderlands (Don't see what the fuss is about. Find it difficult to get into.)
-Burnout Paradise (I like it.)
-Deus Ex: Human Revolution (I LOVE THIS GAME!)
-Fallout 3 (I can't seem to get into this game. I've started it over 3 times and I get to Megaton then get bored. Is it worth it?)
-God of War 3 (I'm not as into this as much as everyone else seems to be. It was OK)
-GTA IV (Loved the earlier ones, for some reason the game just feels too slow to me. Still quite good)
-Heavenly Sword (not bad. Suprisingly so.)
-Heavy Rain (enjoyed, completed a few times)
-Infamous (liked. Haven't played the second).
-Avatar: The Game (Oh my holy shit this game is AWFUL! I got it for £2 in the used bin and I know why. Haven't completed.)
-Lost Planet 2 (Played a bit. Bored already.)
-Mass Effect 2 (What a GEM. LOVED this game.)
-Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (A really fun little platformer. Another little gem.)
-Rayman: Origins (I really like it. Playing now. Loving the gameplay, takes me back to the first Rayman.)
-Red Faction: Guerilla (I really liked this game.)
-Red Faction: Armageddon (Nice gameplay, but disappointing. Wave after wave of enemies is not fun near the end.)
-Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (I loved it.)
-Singularity (Not played it yet, should I?)
-Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 (I'm sure everyone knows this game is broken. I still managed to like it.)
-Sonic Unleashed (Enjoyed the day stages)
-Sonic Generations (I LOVE. So fun. Short and sweet.)
-Tomb Raider Underworld (OK. The movement isn't fluid enough.)
-Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (A good game, good story.)
-Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (LOVE. Great story, ridiculously fun to play.)
-Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (As good as U2, but not better than, which it should have been.)
-Valkyria Chronicles (This game is brilliant. Anyone who has a PS3 and hasn't played it should do so.)

As you may have noticed, I'm not really into FPS's. I've never played Call of Duty and don't intend to. I've thought about Assassin's Creed because everyone I talk to seems to love it, but I've never played it. I've also never played either of the Batman games. I'm also aware that Skyrim exists, everyone keeps telling me to buy it but I'm not paying £45 for it. Will wait for a price drop.

I've also got a library of PSN games, like From Dust, Flower etc that I thought were quite fun, but what I'm really looking for is a good story and good gameplay.  Please share your opinions?

NB: I have an irrational blanket hatred for all sports games, so please don't suggest those.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have Star Ocean: The Last Hope. I haven't really played it yet.

General Discussion / Where did you get your copy of FFVII?
« on: 2011-12-02 23:48:52 »
So today I went Christmas shopping and spent ages in Glasgow city centre searching to no avail for presents. Went into a used game store that had a few of those "retro cabinets" - you know - with Sega Mega Drive's and ancient games.

Lo and behold - Final Fantasy VII for PC. I asked the guy what condition it was in and he said it was mint, I checked it before I bought it and it REALLY is. The best bit? - £5. WOOHOO!

I have my original PC copy which my dog destroyed, and my intact original PSX copy, which my uncle gave me almost 15 years ago ^_^.

So where did you guys get yours?

Completely Unrelated / Anybody here into Uncharted?
« on: 2011-04-18 23:46:03 »
I LOVE the Uncharted series. I find the gameplay fantastic, the storyline is enjoyable and the characters are all funny/ believable/ likeable. I've never really been into online gaming much, but I have a lot of fun with Uncharted 2's online mode, especially co-op.

Anyway, I just saw THIS and fanboyjizzed all over the computer screen. I can't wait for this game to come out.

I don't know about anyone else, but one of my favourite things to do (though not very often) is browse through OCRemix and grab a few remixed tracks to listen to on my iPod, or even to use in FF7. I realise that some people might not like how far from the original the remixers can go but I find it quite interesting how a song can be renewed when remixed.

I have a LOT of favourites, here are a few...

Final Fantasy VI
Terra - Nice Guitar. Rock-esque.

Terra - Slower, very chill.

Phantom Forest - Odd, electronica-ey. Creepy vocals.

There are many more remixes of terra, most of them are good. As well as other mixes from FF6 that I like.

Final Fantasy VII
Many - Good medley of Anxious Heart, Fight On, Let the Battles Begin.

Frozen Landscape - I listen to this in bed when I'm trying to get to sleep, it's awesome.

Cosmo Canyon - One of my all time favourites. I love the build up.

Hurry - The quote near the end is excellently placed.

J-E-N-O-V-A - I use this for the Jenova Synthesis battle.

Cry of Planet - Dance-ey.

Cry of Planet - Odd and close to original.

Wutai - I like this one. Chill again.

Anxious Heart - AMAZING, I use it in game every time. Has a great creepy vibe.

Final Fantasy VIII
Man with the Machine Gun

Balamb Garden - Relaxing. Nice Guitar.

Compression of Time - One of my favourites from FF8. Wish I could use it in-game ^_^

Final Fantasy IX
FF9 - Battle - This one made me laugh, though the sound isn't that great.

FF9 - Melodies of Life - I find this one relaxing.

Many (Mainly FF9) - This one is an interesting emalgamation of many different tunes.

FF9 - You are Not Alone - My favourite song from this game, great remix. Resembles the original.

There are loads more. There's a remix of "Utai" that I really really love but can't find anywhere at the moment. It's not the one I posted above. If anyone knows of any remixes of that song post me a link and I'll see if it's the same one.

So, what are everyone elses favourites?

Completely Unrelated / Should I downgrade to XP?
« on: 2009-04-29 01:24:07 »
I know the answer to this question from everyone is probably gonna be yes...

But I'm wondering if I really should this time. Usually I toy with Vista until I get really bored with it and then go back to XP (I like to do a fresh install of an OS every once in a while just to keep my drives super-clean). I'm starting to think my interest in Vista is purely aesthetic and I'm starting to get bored with it again because I know if I reinstalled XP it'd run at super-speed and I wouldn't encounter all sorts of problems with installing patches and stuff.

On my desktop (which I don't use much anymore) I've installed Windows 7 (its so damn PRETTY) which seems to handle everything a lot better. But it's still in beta so I don't really know if it's a good idea to use that as a primary OS for my laptop. I'm scared to wipe whats on here too because I know that I might encounter problems as this came pre-installed with vista. it also has a 500GB hard drive that I've amassed so much crap on (a lot of crap that I'd like to keep a-thank-you). I download a lot of my TV shows as I'm outside the US and like to keep up with US TV. Does anyone know of any good deals on external hard drives so that I can keep the amassed crap off my laptop?

I miss how simple XP is... if I had to go back, I'd probably go back to XP MCE. The thing I like most about vista is how anti-aliased everything looks... even the fonts I'm typing out right now. In XP they'd look all jaggy!

Extremely childish way to look at it, I know. I just know how to make XP run like a dream, and it feels like I've left so many errors unfixed with my current version of vista that it'd be easier to start over. At any rate, I can't do anything until I've found out the best way to store all my files. I have 160gb of free space on my desktop but transferring all the files I want is a bitch.

Advice, anyone?

Completely Unrelated / Final Fantasy XIII Demo Footage
« on: 2009-04-19 15:32:45 »
The demo version of Final Fantasy XIII that is being released with ACC has arrived.

For anyone thats interested, the first 40 Minutes of Final Fantasy XIII can be downloaded in high quality for your viewing pleasure here:-

http://www.gamersyde.com/news_7707_en.html

I've just finished watching it and I'm not entirely sure what to think. I think it looks great but I'm anxious for a version of this to be uploaded with English Subtitles because I can't understand a word of Japanese. The storyline LOOKS interesting though. I can't wait to own this one ^_^

Need to buy a PS3 first right enough...

List your 3 favourite/most memorable monsters from any Final Fantasy game and WHY... They don't need to be bosses, but can be.

1. Jenova (BIRTH). I think this might be one of my most memorable bosses because of the music. You kinda jump from the creepyness of the on-alert cargo ship into something that sounds kinda electro. It got my blood pumping the first time I heard it. Then theres the fact that Jenova looked so effed-up its unreal. Like a tree or something... creepy. In fact, I liked all the Jenova boss-fights. And obviously this is from FF7.

2. FF8 - PuPu. Honestly... what was that thing? Cute... maybe. Creepy... definitely. Not worth it... definitely. Strange and funny... oh yes. All these things mean I'll never forget this little monster. And the name of it, I suppose.

3. FF10 - Any of the dark aeons to be honest. In particular Shiva, who was (in my opinion) one of the most difficult to defeat.

I feel I should also mention the Zombie-president from FF8... that thing made me feel physically sick the first time I saw it all those years ago. Theres something about the text that I just didn't like!

I'm at computer in college so this just popped into my head ^_^

How many of you guys are students, and if so, what is it that you study and where?

I'm at Cardonald College in Glasgow (Scotland) doing an access course after 2 years of developmental full-time work. I got into Glasgow uni next year to do either Law and Psychology or Psychology. I also got accepted to neuroscience but I'm not sure about that one.

Troubleshooting / Vista - No Movies
« on: 2009-02-01 23:36:07 »
Hi all,

I'm sure you're all sick of these topics and requests for help etc. but I'm really at a loose end as to what to do with this.

I got a new laptop for christmas (FF7 runs like an absolute dream with all mods on my desktop PC) which has Vista Home Premium. I decided I was gonna install FF7 again over the weekend there, finally having a day off work. I've spent hours and hours before installing FF7 and trying to get it to run, I usually end up with success and thats that, but for the first time I'm at a complete loose end as to what to do.

Heres my system:-

CPU                        Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.67GHz
RAM                        4GB
Graphics                  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400

I've tried everything I can possibly think of. I've installed FF7, then tried to run it - no movies, get the title screen. Installed 1.02, ran it, no movies, title screen. Installed duck (already have k-lite codec pack), in ffdshow truemotion 1,2 was already disabled. No luck. Game was playable with all mods (aside from the SaiNts high res patch, which I've never been able to implement). Tried upside down movies patch, no luck. Changed FF7 config display settings to every combination imaginable. No Luck.

Uninstalled everything, started again. Tried all of the above in a different order with and without mods at least 6 times. I was actually at it from 4pm on saturday until 5am on sunday morning, before giving up and going to bed. I now have the game set up and running as i'd like it to be (without the games high-res patch) but with no FMV's! I've also tried uninstalling k-lite codec pack and all other codecs and reinstalling, with no luck.

I'd really like to know exactly what the problem is. Some people have luck with vista, others don't. Can anyone help?

Also, the maximum resolution on my laptop is 1280x800, which is why the high=res patch isn't working. I really want to be able to use this, I always have. I know some people can use it on laptops with this resolution and a bit of the screen is cut off.... I'm fine with that, I just want it to work! I'm getting the "flash"  when I install it. Is there a specific workaround to allow this to work?

Please, shed some light on my extremely irritating problem.

Alex

Completely Unrelated / Help with PC Upgrade
« on: 2008-09-22 23:27:21 »
I was wondering if you could all help me decide what new PC hardware to invest in.

First of all, I'm not a mega PC gamer so I don't really need anything that makes my comp uber-fantastico, I just want it to run a bit smoother and to upgrade my RAM and Video card. To be honest, its fast enough as it is, I just want to be able to run the Sims 2 with all its expansion packs without the awful lags, and with the Sims 3 coming up I thought I could do with the upgrade really.

First of all, heres my system specs:-

==System==

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1 Build 2600)
Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPU's)
Memory: 512MB RAM
Page File: 238MB Used, 1776MB Available
DirectX Version: Directx9.0c
BIOS: PHOENIX Award BIOS v6.00PG

==Display==

Name: ATI Radeon 9600 Series
Chip Type: AGP
Approx. Total Memory: 128MB

As you can see, its not very amazing but it does what I want it to, and the CPU's are half decent.

I just need advice on a new video card and the best deals on RAM, I think the biggest my motherboard can take is 3GB according to an online test I did a while back. The video card doesn't have to be too fantastic either, just fast, smooth, and more modern that'll be able to handle the sims 2 games well and I'll still be able to play FF7 & 8 without too many problems.

Thanks in advance and if anyone has sites to direct me to I'm in the UK.

EDIT: I should probably also mention that I don't use a PC monitor, I use my TV through the VGA port in the back, so being able to just plug it in and see it using the male to male adaptor I have is essential.

Archive / Attack While you Have a Limit Break?
« on: 2008-06-29 17:21:59 »
I've been browsing the forums for a way to do this with no luck so far.

Is there a way to patch the game so that when a character's limit bar is full, they can still use the attack command? After a while it can get irritating when trying to keep a full limit bar for a boss when you just want to hold in [OK] to get through battles.

Wouldn't it be better if the way to use a limit was a bit more like the style of Final Fantasy 8, where you hold in
, and then select it?

Can it be done?

General Discussion / Final Fantasy: Dissidia... Site Open!
« on: 2008-06-26 22:38:21 »
For those of you that are interested in this new piece from Square....

http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dissidia/

The official Dissidia: Final Fantasy site is now open for business. With a few great screens and a great looking trailer. I'm looking forward to this one, since I can't mod my PSP to play the old FF games because its a slim and lite and because I'm afraid I'll brick it by using a pandora battery....

*Sniff*

Anyhow, looking forward to Dissidia! Is anyone else?

Archive / Character Modification... Where to start.
« on: 2008-06-23 20:29:25 »
*Sigh*.... I hope this doesn't irritate anyone too much.

I've been browsing these forums looking for a guide on how to Screw about with some of the 3d models in Final Fantasy 7. I'm basically looking to grab some models from maybe Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 (which I own), because I realise that the artists on here that are able to implement these in-game aren't able to release them due to legality.

However, I know NOTHING about 3d modelling. I'm a really fast learner and can learn while I'm going along and fiddling about, its how I improve on most things. I'm just wondering if someone could very swiftly post a few links and tell me EXACTLY what I'll need to do these things, what I'll need to read up on and what programs to download to be able to do some character/weapon mods.

If I manage to teach myself enough I'd also like to lend a hand to finishing some of the models from the NPC-RP or PRP.

I have some spare time in the coming weeks, so I thought now would be a good time to learn some new skills ^_^

Heres the deal! -

I've been a frequent visitor to this site for a long time now, had an old computer and managed to get FF7 PC working with all patches I wanted/needed for the game to run, which was excellent. So I got a new computer. It has a worse graphics card than my old one with worse memory, but a much better processor.

Specs from dxdiag:- Processor - Intel Core Duo 3.0Ghz (2CPU's)
                                            Memory - 446MB RAM
Display - VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP

Windows XP.

I had already installed FF7 PC the week after I got this PC, and it worked fine, but I did a fresh install last night (and I havent updated any graphics drivers, nothing has changed since I installed it the first time). I tried it without the patches - nothing. I tried it with the 1.02 patch - black screen. So I decided to just apply all the patches I had before, to see if it would work then.

I followed this guide to the tee:- http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=6238.0
As I did before. I used the YAMP "movie skip" with ctrl-s, when the Eidos screen is supposed to play I used ctrl-s, and it took me to THIS! -

Which is absolutely ridiculous. I went to the new game option and skipped the "non-existant" opening movie. I can hardly read the dialogue in-game because there are kinda green boxes everywhere? Hard to explain. And also cloud runs EXTREMELY fast XD.

I tried disabling truemotion in ffdshow as is recommended with the k-lite codec pack, I tried uninstalling the truemotion codec, then reinstalling with the "upside-down movie patch" which worked on my old comp but not on this one, I also tried installing the "upside down movie patch" on its own. Nothing works!

Can someone help?
