X wasn't "way too hard", it was a welcome change with those sidequests from the piss easy ones we usually get with FF games.
The first time I meet Dark Shiva, the thing moved 3 times in a row, each dealing 9999 damage. I never wasted my time trying for the past 4 years

They went from one extreme to another

2
The hardest part of XII is staying awake through the overlong and tedious dungeons.
I ragequit at the last dungeon when I see that it has no map whatsoever

Yes, I've played it for 89 hours (and with 9999 damage and invincibility cheat too! Imagine how long it would take if I don't use those), yes, I've defeated the last game, and yes, it's the final dungeon, but no map? Serious-f*cking-ly?

No, I'm not a cartographer, thanks. I've spent a lot of time mapping that mapless dungeon where you can get Danjuro, I'm NOT going to spend another time being a cartographer

The hardest was... well... that SNES Tiny Toons game, basically some kind of Olympics or something. Oh, the last difficulty...

Never claimed it was difficult, just that it was unique and that you couldn't win by spamming the same two buttons the entire time. It's something that you won't necessarily be expecting the first time you run into it, and fairly fun.
Luxord, maybe, but Xemnas?
Axel? Demyx? Xigbar?

Well, ESPECIALLY Xemnas. His was, like... what? "Press Triangle when something is blocking you, then get near him with triangle, THEN spam your cross, repeat until bored. After that play Gradius 3D (or was it before?) "

They're awesome (and in case of Sephiroth, badass), I have to give them that, but it's because Sora and Riku are even more flexible than Neo in his own Matrix. Take that part out and they're really just about button mashing (except Luxord, as you mentioned)

Quote
The motivation, at least on the part of the protagonists, is all about devotion. Sora is so devoted to Kairi that he will turn the world upside down twice over just to save her. King Mickey is so devoted to his responsibilities that he's willing to endanger himself and do leave behind those he cares about in order to do what has tobe done. Riku is in the first game devoted proving he's as good as Sora, and in the second game to redeeming himself.
It's too linear. I see that Sora's heart is in the right place, but he did all that not because of a reason. He simply did what he thought is best. The same goes for the other characters

I mean, they don't have any goal that they knowingly have, if you catch what I mean.
Let's break down their motivations:

Sora: "Kairi is in trouble! I have to save her by going to random worlds and smash thing up!"

Riku: "Damn, this guy is catching up with me, better do something awesome and stupid then"

Mickey: "The world is in trouble! I have to leave everyone clueless and watch from afar as they look for me!"

Donald & Goofy: "The king is away! We'll have to leave the girls alone and defenseless as we look for that stupid king!"

Organization XIII: "I want some heart, and bad. Let's throw some unfathomable plan and watch as they fail"

Pete: "I want to rock the party up! Let's take some random power the protagonists don't have and use it to fail!"

My awesome and badass Sora, the very guy who defeated Sephiroth, can't just capture Pete, because of what? Because the goddamned guy can freaking teleport! Between worlds I have yet to open! And where did he get that kind of power? Nobody had an idea

What is with this development? It's like Power Rangers or Super Sentai, where the bad guy gets a mechanism to go overdrive or something after he's defeated. If a weak obese guy can teleport, why can I only skate? If he can control the bugs in Re:Coded, why can't I? Especially after he crafted a freaking genie lamp with that?

It's not fair (and plain ridiculous) is what I'm saying. I'll trade Neo's flexibility with teleportation anytime

You're not re-sealing them. In fact, you're opening them back up, because Sora dun goofed, and sealing them was a non-solution which has prevented him from actually defeating the true villains.
I strongly suggest playing this game all the way through. The story REALLY picks up around the final act, and the battles get more fun once you have all of Sora's forms. Some of the later bosses are quite unique and exciting also.

I don't know about "unique". They're awesome, yes, but mostly it's all about watching the same scene playing again and again and keep pressing triangle and cross

But Final Form

YES

My God do they know about the word "badass" and "stylish"

But do you guys ACTIVELY look for flaws in games AS you play them?
No, I don't. In fact, I kinda forgot the difference of graphics settings' effects except for antialiasing during gameplay

That's how uncaring I am about games when I am playing. But now that I'm not playing, I can think clearly and see things differently

And once I begin to play, I start to forget about what I thought before again  ;D

I have KH for ps2. Never really played much of it.  :|
Found it boring and the chars are just too cartoony.

You certainly have never fought Proud Sephiroth

Heck, Normal Sephiroth is already a pain in the ass if you don't whack him when he starts levitating

But then again, if you already know you have to whack him, Normal and Proud Sephiroth really don't have any difference.

I wouln't say Auto Battle makes the game play itself, as you still need to change Paradigms (=strategies) depending on the situation. And about the AI, I can't tell if your friend's comment is sarcastic, since there are times when the AI acts in incredibly stupid ways.
Really? Well, he said the AI always use good combos he never thought of (now, this probably comes down to him being less skillful then he's supposed to be) and will always exploit elemental vulnerabilities

I heard you can set the battle mode to "auto" and the game basically plays itself, is that true?

My friend said the allied AIs are very useful, they always use "super effective" attacks against enemies with vulnerabilities. If only allied AIs in FPS games can do the same...

*SPOILER ALERT*

That's the part I really don't understand. According to the Kingdom Hearts Wiki, there's like four different Ansems. There's so many people in the Kingdom Hearts series, it's so confusing trying to figure out who's the Nobody of who, or who the actual person is. Does the game ever tell you about each member of Organization XIII and who their human counterpart is? Isn't Roxas the Nobody of Sora, and Namine the Nobody of Kairi? They both lost their heart in the first Kingdom Hearts, thus creating those two, correct? That's about the only part of the whole story I understand.
Those two are also a lot more badass than their original counterpart

Sora needs at least one other soul to wield two Keyblades, Roxas needs only manly rage to go (on a side note, Roxas is pretty much Vanitas, so there's that)
And Namine can alter memories, Kairi can only go unseen all the time

Also, if Sora loses his heart once again, will it create another Roxas? I mean, you can go Heartless mode in KH2

That's a lot of Keyblade Badasses

I think I've read in Ultimanias/ Interviews with nomura that he creates the visions for the entire timeline and mysteries surrounding certain events a long time before the next game is developed, in fact I think he already knew what was going to happen in the 3 latest portable games before KHI was even finished. Secret endings sort of tell you that, and plot mysteries are left open generally. (As opposed to with FF7 and CC, where the plot was blatantly closed and solid, yet they prised it back open in stuck in genesis at completely inappropriate parts just so they could advance CC's story a little bit more).

As for the characters being similar to eachother, I said it before - the plot lines involve characters having deep links with one another, on many occasions they're actually the same person in some form or another. I doubt Nomura wrote the storyline based on how much effort he would have to put into designing all the characters later on. Whether this idea is a good plot device is completely down to your own opinion, but I think they've done a good job making every character unique.

And the point of Birth by Sleep was that each character Mimicked the corresponding character from the original game somehow - there are character links which have a lot to do with the plot of the series.
Also, just because Aqua's a girl, doesn't mean she's basically the same as kairi, although there is a vague link. Different characters altogether.

That's the beauty of leaving things open: you can fit literally anything (well, okay not ANYthing) and it will be fine

Secret Endings are usually vague at best, or point at predictable future at worst (BBS secret ending points to Sora and Riku gaining even more strength, oh, and KH's version of Aizen is coming back. What? More strength, more final boss?)

I guess it's more because of my principle: I'd rather have movies that patch things up (like telling us how they live their normal life back in the Island) and close things up solid than secret "Endings" that simply point to vague future (and open new project opportunities)

Too much stuff in a series with intertwined stories kinda make it go bad after a while.

The Same's been said about FFXIII's story - I don't think complexity of a story is at all a bad thing - most of the time the inablility to understand it fully is counterracted by playing it again a short while after. If anything, KH's complex story only adds to it's appeal, it's not written to be completely accessible from the get-go.
I don't know, it seems more like they didn't plan on making KH a big series (a series maybe, but not THAT big) and kinda add stuff like Aqua and the likes to fill demands

Kind of like how Angeal and Genesis got added just so Crisis Core is not all about the mighty Sephiroth, or the addition of "the first generation of AVALANCHE"

Quote
I like the systems of the portable KH games a lot, but they're a lot less 'free' than KH2's system is. Also, combo's in the KH games are generally done by mashing X a lot (sometimes square depending on how many ablilites you have/how much you understand the battle system)
Portable KH games offer much more varied system. KH2 combos are pretty much predetermined (which kind of attack executed depends on how many times you've mashed X button)

But seriously. Final Form. 'nuff said.

Quote
Well, Roxas' heads' design has admittedly been used twice for two different characters - but it was used as a plot device, so you can't really blame nomura for doing it. To my knowlege, Riku's design was only ever used for Riku. If you're referring to Vanitas, the similarity was also used as a plot device, and he was still redesigned slightly. You can't honestly be trying to say that the KH series lacks creativity because there is just no way.
I'm talking about how they seem to use the same character for just about every type:

For the "Golden Hearted", go with Sora (which becomes Roxas when he got a much deserved haircut, and finally the guy with Sora and Roxas' half clothings sewn together)

For the "looks awesome but actually weak", go with Riku (you need a plot key that is in danger? Make it look like Riku and have him fall to darkness! Seriously, even Simba or Mulan can take care of themselves. What is with the guy?)

For the girl, just go with Kairi (which becomes Namine, and that girl in 358/2 Days, and Aqua)

They need to stop creating generations of basically the same people

Well, I am currently playing Kingdom Hearts, the first one on PS2, and I don't like it so much. I prefer 358/2 Days or BbS.
I skipped right to KH2. The first is troublesome both in control and camera

Besides, KH's story is BS anyway. It's so confusing you don't know which is first. In fact, even if you switch them around, they can still fit in somehow

The best system seemed to be either Birth By Sleep's or Re:Coded's (which is a tweak from BBS's). KH2's system is prety fun, but with all kinds of context sitting at triangle button, I can't figure out how to execute a proper combo

KH series will need to stop someday, right now they're throwing in so many stuff it's starting to look like FFVII

Also, I'm not one to call, but their artist seriously lacks creativity. How many times have Roxas and Riku's design been used? Just about anything that needs serious babysitting can become Riku somehow

What does the search button look like?
Yes, my mistake. I assumed that if Google Search couldn't yield a satisfactory result, no other search system can. I was wrong, and more than that it looks like I used the wrong keywords when searching

Install it and ask yourselves how to answer the question.
It's kind of like saying "Eat it yourself and see" when someone asked "Has this food gone bad"?

It doesn't answer the question and/or the problem at (my) hand: it is unknown what kind of effect an installation option will yield until it is installed, somewhat a problem since there is no "uninstall" option

I myself reinstalled the whole game because I don't know which parts were changed during installation and decided I'd rather have the original model instead of the better one. My case is an especially stupid one, yes, since I installed the thing before knowing this forum's existence and my Google Search seemed to be a stupid case as well

Team Avalanche / A few questions about the overhaul
« on: 2011-06-12 12:50:30 »
Well, here it is:
  • Is the field model a custom model or simply the original model rendered in high res? Because I noticed that characters have mouths when they shouldn't have one (seeing Jessie making that "Oh!" face all the time is very weird). I tried playing PSX version in emulator, the models are rendered just about the same size and they don't have mouths (I have never actually seen vanilla PC version, so maybe I'm just misinformed)
  • How does the custom Diamond Weapon model look like? I tried to search for it on the internet, but just can't seem to find it
  • How does the custom avatars (from Nero or something like that) look like?

Well, finally, not technically a question, but more like a suggestion: is it possible to add screenshots or preview of what exactly we're installing? I mean, sure, people from this forum might be familiar with the projects, but casual players who just want to play the game don't know what they're choosing. Barret and Diamond Weapon's models is a good example of this

Dear God, how am I supposed to know a random lunatic would come and scream "I'm offended!"?

"Someone" could be freaking anybody. A simple thumbs up outside of United States but inside America means sexual insult. If a guy from Latin comes and get offended by my thumbs up flyer, what am I supposed say?

I remember Aali saying he kinda skipped the whole sleeping sequence altogether due to some problems with ficedula's music plugin. But when I sleep at Junon (specifically, before sending Rufus off) the sequence is not skipped and the game plays just fine.

Is there a special reason for this particular case (that this inn's sequence is not skipped)?

Have you tried running it as Administrator?

And try to disable avast when installing, the thing likes to come up with false positive, much like AVG

The one provided here should work, as the FF7Music itself is about a few years old, only the configuration file and music content ever get updated

you could try editing your save with black chocobo. under the Game options tab see if the Sound config does anything for the pc version. that switch is part of the savemap. but im not sure if its used in the pc version.
I can't believe it. There is an option for Stereo and Mono. I'll try playing now. If it works, 7 kudos for you :P

Edit: well, it doesn't seem to work. Oh well, I'll just play it the way it is then. At least I've tried

Troubleshooting / Is it possible to force mono output?
« on: 2011-06-05 06:42:17 »
Well, title says it all. I want to hear mono output, so that all of my speakers respond to Cloud's slashes, not just one of them

In the PSX game, it is possible to do this via menu config. Is it possible to do this in PC version? Either via the game settings or via a plugin?

I have tried to mess around with Windows Audio Control Panel, Realtek HD Audio Manager, out_wave.dll, out_ds.dll, in_psf.dll, ff7config.exe, with no result.

I know it's a long shot asking here, but never know till you try
