WIP / Re: Final Fantasy VIII - Graphical Update Mod (WIP)

Going over masks hand by hand will take months and you may end up with seam problems if the overlay isn't matching up.
@blippyp If you want, send me one complete Field with all the Layers, I'll go over my method and send them back to you. After that you can decide if that would be the better way to persue.

If it helps you:

I had the same problems with my masks as the blocky patern of the PSX original don't really look good on higher res arts.
I solved that by resizing the psx layers with 400% size & lanczos algorithm. After that I flatten the image so it get rid of all alpha. I then use a script to get rid of 3-4 Pixel radius around the edges.

That way I get way more organic masks instead of the blocky approach.
it's by far not perfect but you'll never get a perfect result without touching them by hand (or maybe some day an AI can do that for us ^^).

Hi, I'm also working on an Update to my original Waifu HD Backgrounds for FFIX.
What do you mean with rewritting HW to export more information? If you're extracting from PSX Source you just have to untick merge layers and you receive every layer (transparency, tiles and animations).

I've extraced all assets from PSX as well as Steam (as you need the light sources from Steam sadly) and I'm about 66% finished with everything.
I'll also release all the PSX and Steam assets as well as every Folder with their respective Field# so no one have to  worry about dubletts and Field#.

The seam issue is because the Steam Version uses one more pixel on each layer so they overlapp (the psx assets are seamless).
I resolved that with resizing the psx layers with 400% size & lanczos algorithm and get rid of the transperancy around the edges. Afterwards I just cut out the Layers on top of the new ESRGAN Image and voila -> No seam problems.

How did you solve it? Maybe your art/mask is better than mine. :)

Now it'l work.
I've seen that I had admin and buddys only.

Thanks again for your help. That'll help extremely! :)

55
Wahooo that worked!
I had to modify your code a bit in regards to your results folder but otherwise it's awesome!

Can you try sending me another message? I didn't really block anything but I unchecked "allow user to send me mails" I can't find anything to blocking PM's. :/

56
I've send you a PM.

57
I don't have any batch files that's why I asked for a solution, sorry. ^_^

58
Hm... it doesn't work on my end. I can see that you've a mybatch.bat beforehand.
Sorry, I'm really not a coder and need more guidance *lol*.

I've altered the test.py with your code and run it in command line with this code:

models/Manga109Attempt.pth D:\ESRGAN\LR
If I run it, it wants to open the Manga109Attempt.pth

I've two subfolders for test in D:\ESRGAN\LR.

59
First of all, thanks. :)

If I use your code I receive this error message:
Code: [Select]
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "test.py", line 12, in <module>
    src_path= sys.argv[2]
IndexError: list index out of range

60
I'll take this as option B. :)

Thanks a ton! :)

Farg I want to thank you for all of your hard work. I can’t wait to see what you have in store for FFIX. It’s a game that holds a special place in my heart and helped my though a very rough time in my adolescence.

I’m sure you are ask frequently, but any idea when we might see your ESRGAN work come to fruition?

I'm doing a bit more than just a simple mod.
I'm trying to get all the assets bundled with a nice how to so everyone can just jump into making their own Background mod for FFIX. That way no one needs to deal with exporting them and sorting them properly. :)
In between I'm making the mod as well so it'll take some time but not as long as my first mod as I now know all the details to all scene and were I had problems before. :)

@Satsuki Do you know if there's a way to configure ESRGAN so that subfolders are read as well as added to the results folder?
I've added an issue to the repo https://github.com/DmitryUlyanov/deep-image-prior/issues/43 but maybe I just didn't read and it's already possible?

That way mods would be more easy to incorporate mods with their 100 or even 1.000 subfolders.

62
Satsuki it's great to hear so much dedication.
Glad I could help you out a bit. :)

63
Oh that really sucks but I guessed so. :(
How are you handling alpha layers as esrgan wipes them clean? :)

64
Pick that one with the blond avatar that is eating an apple. :)

I also have an automatic way of doing my layers, what I meant was that sometimes on top of the static full backgrounds are layers with objects like a ghysal green in FFIX that's animated.

I also filter the whole scene with every animation as one whole picture. The problem now is that objects don't lign up with my generated alpha masks, derived from the psx backgrounds.

For those I would need a better way or manually cutting them to really fit as one object instead of taking subpixels from the nearby backgrounds. ;)

65
Hi Satsuki, thanks for that information.
I'm still experimenting with my pipeline. :)

My steam name is Fraggoso. Add me. :)

I don't know if FFVII has sometimes objects on top of a Background layers?
If yes, do you know a way way of Filtering those properly?
I filter them with the entire scene so the output is better but cutting it manually is a pain in the Ass...

I tried to filter only the object, but the results are sub par.

66
Hi Satsuki I'm using esrgan as well for my FFIX background mod. I'm using the manga109 model though.
Maybe you can add me in steam or via PM so we can start a conversation. I think it can produce great values in esrgan and its way better that waigu and base esrgan.

67
I'm working on something for FFIX with esrgan. :)

68
I can't help with the batch extract but one question from my side: Are you using letsenhance.io?
If yes, ask for a batch as filtering thousands of images will be a pain in the ass if you've to do it manually.

69
Will you update your upres algorithm like we discussed? :)

70
I think the game already has a Russian translation?

71
Any news on this?
I really want to enhance the subpar texture quality of it. ^^

72
I don't know if AF alters the texture files?
Doesn't it work from the getgo without doing anything? If not you better ask tirlititi about it.

73
Im not working on that right now. I've got so less time nowadays and you need to touch the textures 1:1 manually or else it'll look like shit. :/

74
Use angeal wing instead if you want to see more improvements then project eden.

Team Avalanche / Re: Jusete´s field scenes

They look fantastic!

One thing to add: Crank up anti aliasing so you don't have discrepancy like the edges of the holes in the gold saucer also I would add ambient occlusion as much as possible to ground things like the middle podium in the 2nd pic.
