General Discussion / FFXI benchmark program

dgp9999:  I scored a 2375 with the following setup:

Athlon XP1800
512mb SDRAM
GF2ti  (200mhz)

Not exactly like yours, but with the DDR and faster card I expect you wouldn't do any worse.  BTW, that's on a Windoze 2000 box.

Hal:  No misconceptions about the limitations of wine here.  That's why there's a windoze box in the other room.  I've played with it enought to know it's not worth messing around with (not yet, anyway).  I'm not really a heavy gamer, so it's not like it's a big hassle.  I use vmware at work, so I can run our billing software when I have to.  It's really a shame there aren't more games/ports developed for linux, though.

Goku7:  Hey, I kinda know how you feel.  I held onto a viper2 card for waaaaay to long.  Hell, the thing couldn't display textures correctly to save it's own butt until driver release 9.51.13 (which was well after the card's release).  It was okay for it's time (note I said okay, not great) but quickly became outdated.  S3 drivers have always been crap.  It would be wonderful for companies to continue to write/develop/release drivers for cards that have passed their prime, but it's just not profitable.  We all know what drives companies.  It'd be nice to see continued development for our favorite 3d chipsets, but it's just not going to happen.  I *finally* upgraded to a GF2ti, which was the best thing I could've done.  I can enjoy games at decent framerates and have them display correctly.  And get driver updates.

Halkun:  Have you tried running the demo with wine/winex?  I've had very little luck with wine or that transgaming crap, although my mandrake box isn't exactly what you'd call ready for prime time with gaming.

Jahr7:  Though it doesn't deal directly with the question you asked (well, it does at one point, but not in the same context) here's it's a pretty good thread about FF8's ending, time travel, and a bunch of other stuff.

Warning 1:  This thread is from waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back.
Warning 2:  This thread contains tons of spoilers and lots of icky math/science stuff.
Warning 3:  If you post in that thread, a  mod may come down from on high and bash your wee little skull in.  Please be nice and leave the thread in the old dead thread graveyard.
Warning 4:  Lots of Zima != good, coherent posts.  :

Edit:  See?  I told you.  Zima and posting is not a good mix, kiddies.  I forgot to put the link in.

That's where Fice is, at least.  I expect he's somewhere enjoying time away from uni and chasing bikini clad female types...

As for the remake, it seems to fill up with flurries of activity, and then go silent like the grave.  Real life has a way of catching up with people (reality is such a drag), so I don't worry about it too much.  It'll get here when it gets here.

Nah, we know better.  I'm sure that he's merely some sort of genetic anomoly, and anything he posts won't be leveled against proper Malaysia as a whole.

Exactly.  Since Apple's been relatively quiet on the subject, I take it as a good thing-Not shooting their own feet by stirring up major developers like Adobe (I wonder where the Mac would be without the graphics developer community).  Of course, they could be biding their time, waiting to see what happens later on-then Apple might consider enforcing the patent if it thinks it's in it's own best interest.

Heh, just noticed the topic review displays in reverse order.  Pretty sweet!

Not the transparency, but the technique used to display it (masking).  Here, these two articles explain it better than I can:

PNG is open source, which is why some people associate it with Linux.  There was a bit of fluster going about with the PNG group and Apple, after an Apple patent having to do with Alpha Channels came to light-doesn't really effect the PNG format itself, just some applications that use it.  So far, Apple has yet to announce any intentions with it's patent, so it may just let it be (esp. since progs like Adobe Photoshop use alpha channels, and it's doubtful Apple wants to tick off such an important developer of apps for their platform).

Konqueror is getting better, though it still has a long way to go.  Mozilla is about the best way to go on a Tux box (IMHO), though Opera does fairly well, as does Galeon (Gnome's browser, based on Mozilla...)

Being a 56k'r myself, I'm quite pleased that Qhimm keeps rather 'tight' restrictions on the board.  The difference (these pages look to be around 140k and The MO page I checked was 300k).  Makes all the difference in the world-for me, anyway.  I like the ability to use avatars, although honestly I could live without them.  The only other board I post regularly on doesn't have any of this-no images, no smilies, you can't even edit!  A text sig?  You write it in.  But it_makes_you focus on the content.

If you want to *wow* people, wow them with your interesting, intelligent and insightful posts.  People don't pay attention to noise.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Certifications

Val:  Each A+ core exam is $132, though there are vouchers (that can knock off upwards of $25 dollars a test) available from a number of sources.  Most MS exams are in the $125 dollar range.  The Comptia tests are going adaptive, and the I know the passing score percentage increased for the Net+ test-I assume the A+ will be the same.

All I can say is be prepared!  Though some of it becomes repetative, the amount of information you're expected to know is enormous.  Say what you will about M$, but these tests are no joke.  I'm taking 715 and 710 in the spring, and I take comptia's Net + in about a week ($185 usd! sonofa....).  I'm only shooting for the MCSA, so Net+ and A+ both count for cert-not bad credentials to have, anyway.

For me, living in a rural area demands that you be "flexible" in your abilities.  I've found most employers look for a range of stuff, as most small businesses need a jack of all trades.  There's no telling what you might be doing on any given day, so it's a good idea to know a little bit about everything.

This stuff goes waaaay back.  When I was a kid I got to see the original television runs of Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets for US) and Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers).  IIRC, they cut something like twenty episodes out of Gatch, and inserted a bastardized R2-D2 looking robot called 'Seven-Zark-Seven' as a moral compass for the show.  There was a lot of killing in both series, and it all got whacked.  Yamato had a robot with a panty fetish as well, so you can imagine what happened to that.

It *would* be rather interesting to see them try to work out just how to explain to kids watching Gatch how the villian was a mutant hermaphrodite who could change sex at will.

But no matter how much they hacked either series, both were above and beyond any of the crap they were shoveling out for kids from american studios.

I'd given up hope a long time ago.  And having a PS 2 would be nice, but tuition and taxes  are tearing me up this year (not to mention being on the heels of christmas).

I had made overtures a while back about the ps2 to my S.O., only to be countered with veiled threats like "If you bring that thing home and put it on the credit card I'll pour gasoline on you while you sleep and set you on fire, only to put it out in time to save your organs so I can sell them to pay off the cards..."

Real life is a drag.   :x

Heh-I didn't have anything, but I do now...

Heck, the thought never entered my mind to search for an anime background-most xmas desktops are corny and pretentious.

PS:  Hate to admit it, but the Republicans are as guilty of manipulating the constitution for their own purposes as the Democrats are.  It's really a wonderful document, and a shame that it's been "interpreted" as it has.   Something else-In many cases, it's ignored when dealing with other countries-and that seems a bit hypocritical to me.  Or, it's imposed in our dealings with soverign nations, weaker nations with little wealth or clout.  it's a wonder that there's not more resentment harbored against us as it is.

The admins here are very understanding, and very tolerant-to a point.  I *wouldn't* want to make them mad.

LMAO!  Digital Crack, have to remember that one.  So I guess that makes Qhimm our pusher ?  (j/k)

hmm, that gives me an idea-instead of having "phpBB Created this page in 0.00blah seconds", how 'bout this?

"phpBB Created this Digital Crack in blah seconds!"
