how much math we talking about lol?

Bout a third of the way through, very helpful, allot easier to understand than some of the other tutorials I've tried reading, thanks :)

Back to school, back to school to show my daddy I'm not a fool... packed my lunch etc etc...

Anyway I'll try and keep this short as possible. (with a little back story to clarify)

I'm currently living in regional Victoria, next year my girlfriend is moving to uni and I plan to move with her to the city.
In the instance I have decided that I want to take all my unused brain power and enroll myself in a video games design course of some description.
I'm currently re-educating myself with max and photoshop but I want to be able to do more than just create things visually, and have become more increasingly interested in programming, also reading anarticle in PCpowerplay the other week, where a videogame exec stated that they would pick the designer who can code over the guy who can creatively design 9 times out of 10 made me consider this more.

Anyway I want to introduce myself to all things programming so I can put a small portfolio together so I can apply for a course as I don't have any formal education for a few of the prerequisites.
I've been doing a bit of reading online, got myself a compiler etc, but I wanted ask any of the coders on here in particular if they have any helpful resources for someone wanting to get started.
I also plan to use knowledge gained on some ff7 mods if i get the chance :)
Any resource on any language is good as I can't see how learning different programming languages would be such a bad thing.

Thanks in advance :)

Hey I remember those names :D, Yes weemus you were haha, and yeah I recall popping around a fair while ago and read the banning of all ported model talk lol.
But anyways you probably won't here from me for a while and then BAM! I'll pop out of nowhere and release something Just like the first ime haha.
So yeah I've had allot of good ideas running through my mind as of late and I hear a fair bit of battle and script editing etc an be modified now. I've been thinking about editing the battles and levels and the way monsters attack, I know a few people have done similar things before, but I mean on a more grand scale changing player level stats and the way they level and all that sort of stuff. Theres that idea among about 4 others that I'd like to do, but well its coming spring over here and shearing is starting back up, first few days back and I feel like a cripple lol. But anyway I'll probably be busy for a while so I might get myself educated on the tools in the meantime :)

well for those not in the know, i guess i'm the guy who kicked off the whole changing of battle models and such and using textures, in what was at the time a bunch of fairly basic tools.
But I've heard they have come a fair way in the last few years, which is pretty awesome!

Wow that's awesome that I inspired someone to do great things! makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside (in a strictly heterosexual way lol).
I kinda hope people would continue on what I started way back then, and it seems I haven't been let down :D.

On a side note I didn't even know if my account would still be active so i just punched in what I thought was my old password, and viola! Here I am lol.

Oh and I'm pretty sure I still have all the old stuff I did backed up on my hard drive somewhere.

So I was just playing through a bit of ff7 on my ps3 when my memory jerked on an old site I used to frequent, (this one) *cough*.
Anywho I thought I'd pop around and see whats been happening the last few years, and I'm nothing short of amazed at the amount of attention some people have been putting into their projects.
I'm quite considering coming back into the mod scene, but alas I have hardly touched 3ds max in over 3 years, although my photoshop skills have improved quite a bit.

For those wondering where I have been, once I got a job time slowly slipped away from me (i was 17 then), then I left that job and got an apprenticeship as a mechanic, then I did that for two years and got tired of it, and became a shed hand in the shearing industry , and as of the last year I've become a shearer (of sheep)(now I'm nearly 22 :( ). All whilst moving out of home managing relationships and being at work 10-14 hours a day has left me little time to start any projects.
But over the course of winter (work gets quiet) I've been rekindling my passion for the digital arts.
Now I'm not saying I'm going to jump back into the fray, but I might put myself through a crash course on modding the game once more(might even have to read my own tutorial lol).
So if anyone would like to give me a run down of the last few years, or just pop in and say hi would be much appreciated :)

Ok I haven't bothered to read the entire thread, but why dont you just make a really basic version of this game then, have a "mod for it" including all the stuff you would want in this, then it would be all not for profit mod etc etc, everything made from scratch so there would be less to argue about, just like the jedi knights mod sort of thing, and a few other FF mods around, even if you just made your original game out of stick models, and changed all the characters names away, then  "re edited everything" in a"mod".
You see where I'm coming from here.
Dunno if anyone had said this already coz I was too lazy to read the whole thread.

Hmm I was wondering, seeing as I'm to flat out to try doing any character stuff atm, is it possible to modify the entire world map?
Thats something I could do in spare time, and would add a nice affect to the overall game.

11
No I haven't because I never put any links up of my mod, like I said I'll watch this one and see how it goes and I'll act from there, I mean worst case is cease and desist, which isn't that bad really, as I doubt they would sue or anything.
I'll just hold my cards till I'm satisfied really, nothing suss lol.

12
Yeah those have been around for ages but I think you fail to see the opints being made.

Anyhoo looks fantastic guys cant wait to see how this progresses, Might get on the bandwagon if I can find that disc of uncompiled files somewhere.

13
Maybe I scared the crap outta them lol, don't think to hard now.

No we have lives.
lol

Well I heard filefront actually went into liquidation but you could throw the links up on rapidshare, or megaupload.
Just a suggestion.

16
Yeah well thats the thing, you have to be game enough and send them an email, but you kinda know the response your gonna get back so you'd rather not.

It's like building a shed in your back yard without council approval, you just keep going till they either say fix this this and this, or tell you to tear it down...

17
Yeah that and if you've been here long enough you would also know that the site admins know that square actually has this website bookmarked.

As for deleting it maybe I just get sick of people sending me pm's, and I need something to tell them, usually they only have one or two posts anyway...

18
Ha man this looks nice, hows this sounds.
You release yours first and if you don't get charged with anything I'll release mine lol

Good luck with this guys it look s great.

19
Hehe good to see your still round here espio, done anymore amazing mods yourself?

20
Well thats a pretty decent improvement from what I ever did,  out of curiosity, has anyone worked out how to put in fully skinned models yet or is it still just each peice of a model rotating off a bone in the animations?

21
Hey guys haven't been here in a long while, just thought I'd stop in and ask what improvements have been made to the modding scene since i left.

Oh and I still get pm's everynow and then asking if I will give them a link to my mod, so if anyone is wondering now, no I will not at the current time be giving any links..
On another note I was thinking of getting back into this scene in the near future, if so are there any new programs out or updated versions of the old ones I used to use like Pcreator, and that other one I used to use to port the models in LOL it's been so long I can't even remember the names of the programs I used to use.

Oh and how many guys are still here that i used to talk to regularly from a while back?

Yeah of course you can release these.

Nice work btw, you did a really good job with the models and textures, they match, but look better than the originals.

25
Yeah I agree, use the style you used in the WIP one, just use the old buster sword, and use those lighting effects as well they're very nice.
