Title: Feature requests for the next Bootleg release
Post by: Vgr on 2014-05-20 23:18:19
This thread is for all the feature that you would like implemented. We will take them all in consideration, but it's highly probable some of them will not make it into Bootleg for numerous reasons, namely the amount of work needed versus the benefit it would provide.

Current features requests:

- Uninstall and reinstall options
- Internet links to auto-update the mod list
- DrLilo's 'No Chibi' FMVs
- Bloodshot's HD Battle scenes
- Kaldarasha's new Cait Sith model
- cmh175's Red XIII model
- Knights of Migdar/Cloud of the round if released
- DLPB's latest Anxious Heart
- DLPB's latest Menu Overhaul
- DLPB's Beacause
- Aali's latest driver
- Changing installed mods without needing a full re-install
- Screenshots for all features
- Materias pop-up in "Models" tab shows the same as Potions
- Shred Final_Fantasy_VII_Remix_v2-5-1_Installer.exe and use only required files
- Get rid of duplicates (Orange colored files). Make them more "unified".

Can requests Advent Children Mod in next Bootleg ?

The advent children mod is illegal and will not be implemented in Bootleg.

I reckon most of my suggestions are things you will already be thinking of putting in the bootleg anyway, but I'll put them down nonetheless.

Depending on how far it has come Dr Lilos the chibbies removed from fmvs mod would be nice

Bloodshot's HD battle scenes

Kaldashara's New Cai sith model

cmh175's Red model

and lastly the knights of midgar/cloud of the round mod, if it is released in time for the next bootleg

All of these look awesome.

Updated, and thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you :) Other ones, which I assume go without saying, include the latest aali driver and dlpbs latest anxious heart soundtracks. I'm like a kid in a candystore on this forum though so I could go on all day.

Also do you think it would be possible for there to be a setting that changes which mods are installed without a full reinstall?

I would love to use bootleg as a master control unit so that I can pick and choose which graphical mods to use, which music is being played etc. i.e. use bootleg to change ff7music and ff7config. Use Bootleg front end to use a graphic mod, maybe a limit break texture, try it out in game and then use BFE to change it again without reinstalling.

How long do you think the next bootleg is in the making? Hopefully I can get involved and contribute to this one in some small way ^^

Updated, and even if something seems to go without saying, say it anyway. You can send me a PM with all the requests you have if it's too long and I can update it.

I can't say how far the next Bootleg is, sadly. Not yet.

All new mods are going to be included.

I added to the list DLPB's latest Menu Overhaul and Beacause (ReTranslation). These should hopefully only require a small update from the current versions in Bootleg.

1) Screenshots for all features

2) Materias pop-up in "Models" tab shows the same as Potions

3) Shred Final_Fantasy_VII_Remix_v2-5-1_Installer.exe and use only required files

4) Get rid of duplicates (Orange colored files). Make them more "unified".

Noted. The Remix will probably be entirely gone for the next release (we've been working to make it so). Screenshots are long and painful and we might need someone to do it. We do intend to have every possible screenshot, though. Duplicates are there for availability, but orange-colored files were a bad idea and won't be present in the next release.

I know this will sound rather dumb and boring but:  More screens for the textures tab to show battle field textures so we can see what we want.. Same with other worldly things I guess. xD I'm not good with upcoming ideas and such.

I'm gonna be That Guy and say that the one thing that I would like the most is an option to install Bootleg solely with the stuff that works with the Steam Release. Like, that run straight from the game library.

Iceboundphoenix, all new mods will be present, that's not a problem.

Alexios, I don't know how the Steam version works, but we'll try.

All mods will be added. This thread is not for mod requests more than feature requests (even though I did include the mod requests at first, that's becoming a lot).

1) Rewrite the whole Bootleg in INNO Setup (Or any other programmable environment).
2) Make use of FreeArc (INNO Setup Script already available, but can be easily implemented into virtually anything), to save more space.

Example of magochocobo_ff7pack3.rar: This file actually has the same folder packed twice, which is again a waste of space

Original Size:    415 MB
Packed with FreeArc: 186 MB
Proof (https://mega.co.nz/#!rNwFBLoC!KLJDVE0JH6eV-ryRRuw5SU6-97RLsoam9gaUYDqCTcM)

P.S. Without the duplicate folder it would've been ~100 MB less

I also experimented with Upscaled Magic  files (data.7z.001 - data.7z.006 ), since it also has a moderate filesize. The results aren't as good as the one mention above, because 7z is already quite strong compression.

Size of 6 files together: 545 MB
Packed with FreeArc: 539 MB
Proof (https://mega.co.nz/#!CNAWRaaa!E5qXERVTXNJvbQz6rJYisCigtnU_V5ncIvNkQcAKobM)

I think FreeArc would be good for those big rar/zip files.

Keeping that in mind. However, we cannot compress any mod that is not in the Bootleg's main executable, since the users download the mods from their creators. It's up to the mods creators to do that, and we will of course adapt it.

As for the rewriting, that's been a to-do since forever, but neither PitBrat or myself are good enough to do anything other than in batch (and now that PitBrat can no longer work on it, it got worse).

Reunion mod can be included?
Another question that will be long before we have a new version of the bootleg?
Thank you: D

Well I have INNO scripting skills (which is basically Pascal), but I'm also busy with other projects at the moment. I can make a demo GUI in INNO (Or maybe Delphi, if Freearc is completely vetoed) when I'm free and send send it to you to see if you like it...
Title: Re: Feature requests for the next Bootleg release
Post by: Vgr on 2014-07-03 01:14:11
I never worked with INNO. Take note that the GUI part is not even 10% of Bootleg. The whole Bootleg process is currently written in batch but the GUI is written in VB.NET. PitBrat was looking to merge both in one language while I was looking to keep code and GUI separated. At this point either is fine, it depends on the coders (which are way more skilled than me and PitBrat).

Yes, but as far as I imagine, it can't go further than archive extracting, copying, registry keys, right?
Title: Re: Feature requests for the next Bootleg release
Post by: Vgr on 2014-07-03 15:01:27
It does that and much more. Just to give you an idea, there are 10.5 thousand lines of code only for the Bootleg process. In the current states of things it could be reduced to about 7-8k but a complete rewrite is in order to shrink it further. I personally don't want to keep the current code for the next version, because it's not easy to add new mods right now, and the code is really hard to understand for someone else than me or PitBrat (because we've worked so much on it). What would be great is something that many people are coding and that anyone with minimum coding knowledge can understand or even edit (was thinking of setting up a GitHub for that).

TL;DR - yes it extracts/copy and edits registry keys but it also makes the mods work together.

If someone finds 4 sentences to be TL:DR, then I don't think they should be editing/adding code for us :-P

Sounds a bit more complex than I thought, but achievable. But since I don't know when I'll be free, I would vote for GitHub.

hi! how is going the next bootleg release? a lot of work yet?

just asking because i want play ff7 again, and depending of your answer, i'll wait for next release or not hehe

thx for your work!!

Don't wait for the next release. The next Bootleg release is undergoing a rewriting-from-scratch process which is long, and it is yet impossible for me to say a release date.

These are both the fault of whoever did the models.  Yuffie has a playable character and enemy character files, but they are not interchangeable (outside of the .p files and tex files).  Barret and Vincent both have 4 separate models which are also not interchangeable.  Whoever edited these models copy pasted all the parts which is why you're getting these weird animations.

No offense to anyone, but we need to stick to the theme of this topic --- feature requests. That is a bug report, and we have a separate topic to report bugs. Asking to get rid of a mod shouldn't be requested either because every mod option is still a choice. Simply report the bug and don't choose the option until it's fixed.

Not sure if this has been requested or is being worked on but wouldn't using 7th heaven as part of bootleg help a lot towards installing and uninstalling models individually?  It would be pretty awesome.
Title: Re: Feature requests for the next Bootleg release

We will look into it. EQ2Alyza might be better than me to talk on the matter, but it's not impossible.
Title: Re: Feature requests for the next Bootleg release
Post by: EQ2Alyza on 2014-07-18 04:20:09
yarLson, it most certainly can. You just need to be careful not to interfere with files associated with more in depth mods, e.g. New Threat, Hardcore, Nightmare 7, etc. Depending on how they're built, some files can be overridden and not interfere with the mods functionality. You can use the unpack .iro function in 7H to figure out a mods file structure. Also note that the order in which mods are listed in the Active Mods library for 7H depends on how the files overwrite one another. Top of the list always take priority. Because of this feature, it's sometimes necessary to have to split up files so that it overwrites in the appropriate ways. For instance, all the weapon mods here have to separated into their own .iro and loaded ABOVE the battle models that 7H will use. Anyways, I ramble. Hope I answered your question  :-P

I think so, basically I was just wondering if you guys plan on using it.  Myself I have yet to try 7th heaven.  I just use the direct folder, just a habit now I guess.  7th heaven seems very promising and obviously very useful for a project like bootleg.
Title: Re: Feature requests for the next Bootleg release

Will a feature be implemented that warns the user of conflicting mods? It's been a long time since I used bootleg to install the game, but I don't recall if this was implemented in later releases. IIRC anything that messes with that file that holds the weapon/ attack animation data (I forget the name of it! Judge me not Qhimm forumers, it's been years since I modded) is incompatible with a number of things.

I shamefully don't have an install of VII on this computer right now, but if I happen to do an install I'll keep a look out for anything that might be useful.

And honestly, this is one of the most useful projects to modding newcomers that I can think of. Bootleg itself was a breath of fresh air at the time. I still remember having to manually mod everything including that High Res textures patch that only supported two very specific resolutions prior to Aali's driver being released :/

Anyway yes, flying visit. Hope you're all doing well, glad to see the place is still going strong and good to see the same faces modding etc :D. Keep at it folks.
