Title: [Steam] Steam to 1998 conversion - Game Converter (Beta V0.11)
Post by: Kompass63 on 2013-02-27 05:56:39
  FF7 Game Converter V0.11   (http://www.file-upload.net/download-8807225/FF7_GameConverter_0.11.exe.html)

Do NOT use this older version with 7th Heaven.
Download the 7th Heaven version from STEP 1 of the Tutorial (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15520.0).

This mod convert FF7 (all Versions) that it works with the English FF7.exe V1.02 (including all the needed registry entries).
This makes it possible to install other mod's (eg DLPB&Kranmer's Menu Overhaul or gjoerulv's "Hardcore" mod), which manipulate the FF7.exe.
English, German, French and Spanish are supported! 1
NOW WORKS WITH XP, WIN 7 AND WIN 8, 32 or 64 Bit, with or without UAC :-D
Now also work with Steam Release 2013 (see EDIT 2013-07-07)

Please report if it works for you!

Special thanks goes to  EQ2Alyza, who has corrected many English sentences and other things has inserted.

I uploadet the two files in a mirror too. The links:

Great  thanks for that :)

You will lose Achievements, Cloud Saves, and the Trainer after it is converted.

FF7 Game Converter is still BETA, using at your own risk.

FF7 Game Converter requires an unmodified version of FF7 (new or old release).
If you have a Re- or Steam-Release and have used Bootleg before, it is maybe necessary to rid the registry of unnecessary keys (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=14421.msg201774#msg201774).
Before using FF7 Game Converter you need a volume labeled "FF7DISC1", "FF7DISC2" or "FF7DISC3" (for the Re- or Steam-Release it is enough to relabel a USB stick)

Start the FF7 Game Converter with an unmodified FF7 installation.
You don't need to install the Patch 1.02
DO NOT USE Kranmers NewToOld patch! (A better version is already included)
UNZIP NOT Aalis driver 0.8.1b into the game folder. (already included)
also included:
DLPB's Multi.DLL 2
DLPB's Hext.DLL
Kranmer's FF7anyCDv2.DLL
Laptop-Key-Patch

After installing the FF7_GameConverter you should run the game at least once before you install other mod's or Bootleg040 3.

Note: Some mod's use English words. If the game will show up English words that is (probably) the cause.

The Menu Overhaul (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=11649.msg184492#msg184492) from DLPB&Kranmer may spend some error messages during installation.
The reason is that MO uses old touphscript and this program is absolutely unfit for exotic data.
Nevertheless, the main point of MO seems to be working  :-D
We (Red Xell, Kaldarasha and I) have for MO already translated some things back into German.
MO_ger_Patch.zip (http://www.file-upload.net/download-7280549/MO_ger_Patch.zip.html)
Extract and copy useful into the game folder. Also included are pictures of the Battle of Fort Condor.
(The images Kaldarasha reworked, thanks a lot)

Thanks to DLPB and Kranmer for their DLLs and for MO
Also Thank to Aali for his OpenGL-Driver
Thanks to EQ2Alyza for working on the Script

VERY VERY special thanks goes to Red Xell and Kaldarasha, they were so brave FF7 Game Converter to test first.

Edit 2013-05-05    BugFix:
don't recognized FF7-Disk on spanish Windows, fixed (hopefully for all languages ::)) (thanks to cloud15)
Floppydisk now also accept as FF7-Disc
         little Registrykeys fixing

Edit 2013-06-21    BugFix:
         major Registrykeys fixing
Detection integrated, under which environment the script works
integrated compatibility for XP and Win8 (!!!!)
         Disk recognition modified

EDIT 2013-07-07 :
Added possibility to manually enter the path to FF7, if he was not found in the registry.
This now allows the Steam version, but it works only if no old registry keys are there!
Was a bootleg or "new to old converter" previously used before, it is necessary to rid the registry of thereby created keys.
Thanks for the testing goes to EQ2Alyza :-D

EDIT 2013-07-09 :
Added automatic recognition of the Steam release

EDIT 2013-07-31:
Added possibility to manually enter the path to FF7 (again!) for moved FF7-Folder.
          Fixed some errors.
Fixed languagedetection for Steam Release, thanks Template for reporting

EDIT 2014-02-01:
If Destination is inside a Systemfolder GC will copy all to "C:\Games\FF7"
          FF7Config is now calling up.
          Fixes some small issues.

EDIT 2014-02-13:
If Destination is inside a Systemfolder GC will ask to copy all to "C:\Games\FF7"
          Instert small Piracy protection.
Laptop Key Patch added if needed.
          Fixes some small issues.

EDIT 2014-04-11:
Update Aali's Custom Driver Version 0.8.1b
          Create a Batch for FF7Config
          Fix an error with Icons

1 The French and Spanish version of the file "FF7exe-[lang]-translation.txt" probably contains some errors.
Since I can not these languages, I can not change it much.
If someone can do better, I'll add this here. :-D

2 Kranmers Multi.dll seems to cause mistakes in connection with FF7Music.
Unfortunately, this DLL is re-installed by Bootleg.
If you want to use DLPBs Multi.dll (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13574.msg189863#msg189863), remember to copy all the DLLs out of the sub-folder "LOADR" into the sub-folder "DLL_in".

3 Bootleg040 is not designed for XP, but can still be used.
After the Bootleg040 Omzy's FFVII Field Pack (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12260.msg170228#msg170228) should be manually inserted into the mods\Bootleg folder.
You must also edit the "Run FFVII-Bootleg.bat", remove all "/AFFINITY F" (XP dont know about this).

A small note for everybody who use bootleg:

The folder in mods is DK. If you are using bootleg pls rename DK in Bootleg.

Hi everybody. I'm sorry but, I didn't understand the 'goal' of the FF7 converter.
What is different with it, in comparison of normal bootleg utilisation ? I mean, what does it permit than bootleg doesn't ?
We can have ff7 traduced with the re-translation of MO in bootleg, so what the converter brings more for it ?
Thanks a lot
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Kaldarasha on 2013-04-21 12:31:21
The MO only works correctly with the english ff7.exe. The converter has the ability to compile your ff7-installation (assumed you have a non english game) to the english one, but without that you will notice it. This means that the menu and the minigames have the right language. However I only can say this for the german part any other language has to be tested first to say this for sure, also the window.bin off the MO is designed to the english words and need a correction for each language (well it's still Beta, isn't it).
I'm not sure how big this project really will grow,
but I believe it has great potential to become an "Unofficial-FF7-International-Community-Patch".

I don't own a non-English version to test this.

1) Does it convert ANY non-English version to a 1997 English version?
2) If yes, I assume a Bootleg installation can be done afterward without conflict?
3) If Bootleg can be used, then the cfg needs to be edited to point the mods folder to DK instead of bootleg?

I need to edit my Bootleg Installation Guide to include this  :)

Hi EQ2Alyza,

Quote
1) Does it convert ANY non-English version to a 1997 English version?
Only English, German, Spanish and French...
And that's only "Theoretically", as I myself own not any "old" version in languages other than German.
With the rerelease it works in those languages.

Quote
2) If yes, I assume a Bootleg installation can be done afterward without conflict?
not really...
The GC copied (and convert) the appropriate country-specific files as they should be with the English version.
I.e. the Gflevel.lgp (as example) is copied to flevel.lgp.
Any changes made earlier by bootleg to the "flevel.lgp" will be lost ...

Quote
3) If Bootleg can be used, then the cfg needs to be edited to point the mods folder to DK instead of bootleg?
Unfortunately, I do not know exactly how bootleg react if there is already a "mods folder" exists.
In principle, everyone should move the contents of all subfolders located in the folder "mods" in just one subfolder (eg "Bootleg").
Aalis driver may only use one subfolder (of my knowledge).

Great concern to me the program "touphScript" of luksy (is also used by MO.exe).
touphScript can not handle the flevel.lgp of 2012, also other new and exotic files may "touphScript" fail.

For everything else I do not see any problems because the basic file structure is the same in all languages.

What I forgot to mention ...
GC does not work with WinXP, I used the command "CHOICE" in the script.
This command is normally not available in XP... :)

Edit (21-06-2013):
I've added "CHOICE.EXE", now work with XP

Excellent. I will include links to buy the English (EU), German, Spanish, and French versions in my guide.

I was asking if Bootleg can be run after your GC is used, not before. If it converts Gflevel, Sflevel, Fflevel to flevel.lpg, then Bootleg should be capable of reading it. Can this be confirmed with a test on your German version please?  :)

From what I read somewhere else, your GC configures Aali to read mods from a subfolder called "DK" so all that would need to be done is changing the configure to read from "Bootleg" instead. I just need a test subject to confirm or deny this...*hint hint*  :P

What I forgot to mention ...
GC does not work with WinXP, I used the command "CHOICE" in the script.
This command is normally not available in XP... :)

If that's the case, then I might change system requirements to Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. XP is outdated at this point, and anyone using it will probably have too old a computer to even handle the mods.

You can run Bootleg after installing the GC. I tested the GC in combination with Bootleg in many ways and i had never problems. Well I must say I tested the GC only with the rerelease.

Ahh I forgot to say one thing:

Bootleg installed the multi.dll from kranmer. But the GC needs the multi.dll from DLPB. I tested both multi.dll and i got one problem: If you are using the multi.dll from kranmer the translation of MO doesn't work with the musicmod (Both musicmods. the one from ficedulla and the one from covarr).

So before you use bootleg, you must safe the multi.dll what GC is installing. After using bootleg replace the multi.dll from kranmer with the one from DLPB.

EDIT

Again I forgot to say (hehe xD):
Every .dll-files (as an example kranmers FF7anyCDv2.dll) must be moved in the DLL_in folder for working correctly. I don't really know why but kranmers multi.dll have big problems with DLPB Hext.dll if you are using the musicmods.

Hi

Quote
I was asking if Bootleg can be run after your GC is used, not before.
Apologies, I've slept a little.
Yes, bootleg works afterwards.

As much as I appreciate the enthusiasm of RedXell (thanks for that) I will not conceal the fact that there are minor problems.

Some (few) boxes now no longer have the correct width, see here

Also, the battle system has suffered from MenuOverhaul something.

Everything else seems to work so far ...

In order to correct the first error is "MO_ger_Patch.zip" download and unzip it into the game folder.
The file "MO_ger_patsch.txt" which then ends up in the "Hext_in", will fit the box size, though at the German words, but at least something.

MO.exe itself (outside Bootleg) creates a folder called "mods\DK" where the images are.
When you install MO with bootleg these images are moved to the folder "mods\Bootleg".
The "MO_ger_Patch.zip" also contains some images for the German version, but in the folder "mods\DK".
Who has installed a German version with bootleg can move these images into the folder "mods\Bootleg".

For the second error, unfortunately I can not say anything at the moment ...

Quote
From what I read somewhere else, your GC configures Aali to read mods from a subfolder called "DK"
The GC manipulated nothing in this regard ...

Not to be underestimated is the fact that with my GC can also work with UAC enabled now!
Also bootleg now works with UAC

The problems with Kranmers "Multi.dll" I lead it back that the virus scanner does not like this file.
Therefore I have taken DLPB's multi.dll (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13574.msg189863#msg189863).

If there is a need I could adapt GC to WindowsXP, including Chocobo patch (maybe).
I do not think that this is really worth...

Kompass, have you tried downloading Kranmer's Converter and using the registry entries he provides? Do they fix the "MountFF7DISC1.bat is missing" issue? I forgot to mention this in my tutorial, although I did use it for Bootleg0039 long ago, which may be why I never had issues getting my FF7DISC1 recognized. If so, PitBrat may have forgotten these entries being automated with Bootleg0040.

Not unless it's easy to do. XP is too old. I was just thinking that it used to work with XP(but wasn't positive) so why now not? Alyza knows why it seems. Can hopefully be fixed easy by users adding Kranmer's registry entries manually.

The Virtual Hard Disk for FF7 (http://www.file-upload.net/download-7694417/MountDisc.zip.html) is a bonus of Bootleg040 (039 ???).

If you click on the button "Mount", the file "[Gamedir]\MountDisk\MountFF7DISC1.bat" is executed and the disk will be logged in.
If you click on the button "Unmount", the file "[Gamedir]\MountDisk\UnmountFF7DISC1.bat" is executed and the disk will be logged out.
This does not work with XP because there is no virtual hard disks possible.

If the message "MountFF7DISC1.bat is missing" occur, the file simply missing.
Maybe PB has installed a safety device so the VHD not cause damage.

If the hook is set at "Auto Mount" is called every time when click on "Play FF7" also "MountFF7DISC1.bat" and the drive letter will be entered into the registry.

You can completely forget the VHD, for example if you rename a USB stick in "FF7DISC1" and choose the drive letter of this USB stick in the "Data Drive" box (make the check in the "Auto mount" away and write CFG).
The drive letter will also be entered into the registry, regardless of whether UAC is active or not (it is one and the same key).

The message "MountFF7DISC1.bat is missing" should no longer occur.

Of course I've seen and tried Kranmers patch.
The keys I've listed here (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=14189.msg198525#msg198525).
I notice now that there are two entries ..."DiscNo" and "DiskNo"... :-o
I'll have to check again ...

I will also try out Win 8 and see if I can adjust the FF7GameConverter, even on XP.

You can also use this for an English version, some registry keys are set, Aali's driver is inserted, the rerelease is converted to the old release.
But it will used the files of the rerelease, SE has partially renewed, so it is not 100% authentic 1998 version
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Template on 2013-07-05 09:51:36
There is a new version to adapt to:

GC will not install on the just released Steam version.

I have purchased it and GC cannot locate the FF7 install, which is within the Steam menu structure. Bootleg installs fine on it. Doing more testing.

Komp :P If you get a minute, can you tell me a little about what might be the advantage of using your Game Converter as opposed to the one included with bootleg for a English US version of the rerelease?

Because this Steam download is English only, we can't choose Spanish, French or German as far as I can tell, which kinda bums me out because I wanted to try to play in German...

So I'm wondering if it even makes sense for you to trouble yourself converting it to also work with Steam. But it probably does.

I gotta say, after checking out the Steam release I can definitely understand why people want to add the new backgrounds to it, instead of converting to 1998 release. The new release has quite a few nice little details. Not the least of which is the critical hit flash, which I hadn't actually seen since around year 2002. :P

Forced anti-aliasing does work with it, but the backgrounds are so weird looking that it's awkward playing it, then the battle backgrounds kinda looked like they'd been messed with a little or something, not sure. The game runs a little smoother on the Steam release, even with bootleg on it. Now that the new release is available again on the US Square store, I'm gonna pick it up to do a couple tests, which will make this the 4th copy of ff7 i own... Never had to replace my old psx discs!

Edit: Due to a recent gag-order placed on me I'll respond using this pre-approved post. Komp, I've understood this project perfectly, and it does it's job well. It is necessary to make installation of bootleg40 on windows XP, I believe. The English text in the installer is NOT confusing. It's not native English but it's perfectly easy to understand, particularly when it pops the ff7config chocobo Icon right up on your desktop for you. It works perfectly on the versions that it is needed for. As the Steam version is English only you need not worry with this, unless you really feel UAC is an issue worth shielding people from. I think UAC is a bad feature and so I just tell people to turn it off. Now Tifa's Bootleg even reflects this attitude. People with Steam versions can skip her step 0 GC install and people can turn UAC back on after installation is complete if they use the feature to guard against guest users. This is the only good reason I can think of for UAC, though I'm sure there are more.

The important thing for the next version of the Game Converter (if you decide to continue working on the project) will be to fully integrate with the Reunion Menu Overhaul for the European rerelease. Does this not seem possible to work out with Dan, it would save them from having to continue working on Kranmer. I'm sure he'd rather save a buncha threads about UAC being made.
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Kompass63 on 2013-07-05 14:45:06
The Game Converter is is actually an idea of DLPB (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13419.msg186845#msg186845).
But he rejected the project again, probably because the German text was not really integrate into the English exe using touphScript. (probably my fault)

The purpose was to get mods for the German, French or Spanish OLD version to run, which are actually only work with the English version.

The second reason is that Kranmer has its "new to old patch" designed with disabled UAC.
Thousands of people have never heard of what UAC is, turn off by them no question.

Nah, I'm not a fan of it, protection mechanisms (and UAC is something) just turn off, and so I looked closer and picked out the needed registry keys.

EDIT:
Thanks for the pictures with the keys, but you had already sent me and come from bootleg, not the Steam version.

Quote
The English text in the installer is NOT confusing
On English text, I've also changed nothing.
You can unpack my GC with WinRar. In the folder "sprinkles" you'll find three text files, one of which is inserted later in the game.
That is the only text (and a few other Bytes) that will be changed in the game, thanks to "Hext.dll" without manipulating the FF7.exe  :)

Quote
People with Steam versions can skip her step 0 GC install and people can turn UAC back on after installation is complete if they use the feature to guard against guest users.
I fear that's not that simple.
Since the key for UAC & FF7 missing, the game will probably crash when you turn on UAC again.
But I have not tested ...

EDIT2:
Quote
...to fully integrate with the Reunion Menu Overhaul for the European rerelease.
Actually, it works with it, apart from a few minor errors.
The text boxes are of course intended for English text, the German text does not fit in there often.
I have corrected a few boxes, but not all. (see "MO_ger_Patch.zip")

Oh, you fixed it for STEAM! Bravissimo! I will test tonight, most likely.

Edit: OK, here's my one issue with the GC. No clue what could be causing this, and it's so small a detail it hardly seems worth mentioning: it results in a very short, high-pitched, glitch-like sound being emitted across my speaker output when the game opens, just prior to opening FMV. Is that a known issue or not been seen?

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with my GC, but will try to find the error.

Have you installed another Mod's after GC?
What videos do you use? (Rerelease ones, DLPB's ones, Rumbah's one)
Can you play the videos flawlessly with a media player? (if not, you may should update the Sounddriver)
Do you play via HDMI cable?

Can you make a video of it?

No mods after GC, tested it directly after install and this has been the case every time I've installed it. It was hard to get rid of, too. I had to use your remove-ff7-keys tool (it finds 3 keys instead of 2) :-D

Videos work fine, not video related, i think. Was using rerelease vids just now, because no mods, but stayed that way after bootleg and switching vids before with .7, too. It happens before the videos come on. It blips when the GC finishes and it prompts you to run ff7config, also.

I am playing via stereo speakers output right now, I can switch to HDMI out.

If you want a vid of it, itl be a cell phone video lol.

It blips when the GC finishes and it prompts you to run ff7config, also.
That explains ALL

I have installed a few beeps at key locations in the script so that the user is more attentive.
Otherwise he might overlook the last lines in the dos window... ;D

I'm not sure if those are related? It is maybe causing an audio blip when opening the game for some hardware configurations. If I use GC on any installation type I get this high pitched blip when I open the game every time after. I'll send you a video if I get a chance this evening.

I get the audio blips as well. During the GC installation and then when I'm launching the game.

I do not know what you mean with "audio blips".
I can hear nothing like that with me.

If you could make an audio file or a video of it, that would be very helpful for me.

There's something going on with regions or something. This works well for Europeans. Not so much for North American region. Lately when I try again my videos don't work afterI needed to restart my computer it had been months. Some files are being changed names, very strange.

EQ2Alyza where did you download your version from? Is your computer set up in the US or Europe?

New version that asks for language is pretty slick! I think this is gonna help some folks out for sure.

Edit: Something I want to point out about Kompass's Game Converter: you can literally make your own CD image and name the VOLUME FF7DISC1 to get going, put a single file in so the imageburner will make the ISO for you. You'll have to get a program like UltraISO (http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/) to mount it (these are free to use) and then you should be good to go. Or like Komp says you can use a USB stick or even a floppy disk!  :-D
@Komp Can you just include a tiny ISO volume like that with the installer and have it do it's own disc check? People are thrown off track by this maybe.
Also: I have managed to remove the audio glitch that I talked about. I took the multi.dll out and just changed to load_library=FF7anyCDv2.dll (which I moved to the main game directory).

The audio 'blip' at the game start is only a sign that DLPB's hext.dll is working
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: DLPB_ on 2013-07-16 21:24:23
I was warned against using a blip for this reason, but it is just a harmless call to the PC's speaker. As kaldarasha said, it's just to let you know that hext.dll is loaded.  The same thing happens for RaW.dll unless I removed the blip.

Thanks for the clarification of the blib.

Apparently I'm a little hard of hearing, namely I can not hear blib with me...

@DLPB
Would it be possible that you compile a version without blib for me?
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Template on 2013-07-20 20:38:14
I think the blip is fine. We know what it's for now and it doesn't bother me at all. People will maybe wonder and never know why it's there, but other than that they will be totally unaffected. Would be a major pain in the ass to change it at this point. It's good to know Hext is working anyway.

Basically this is the Game Converter to use now. It is set up for the 4 languages SE put on the rerelease and Kranmer'sNew-to-Old Patch just doesn't always handle that correctly; I do not have a frikkin' clue why, cause it works fine for most people. Other than that they are about the same, so I just tell people to use this one now.

The problem with my New to old patch is that it doesn't support UAC or Multiple languages (mine is English), other then that there is NO PROBLEM with it, it adds only the needed registry entries to run the game (and i mean only the needed ones, it doesn't add any that are not needed), Also the difference between my patch other then then the fact i don't support UAC or Multiple languages is that my patch actually converters the new game to the old game, Kompass63's converter just allows you to run the old 1.02 EXE with the new game files, it doesn't actually patch any files other then registry. This is currently only important in the Menu overhaul Mod since it requires the original "flevel.lpg", but once Lusky has fixed the problem with touphscript my patch will no long be needed at all since Kompass63's patch will be good enough to use all mods, So i am hoping Lusky can fix the problem soon since this converter is much better then my own with support for UAC and languages :).
And great work on this Kompass63 its really come along nicely.

Bump for Kompass63's GameConverter.9b (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=14047.msg196959#msg196959) on the front page.
Some things to note:

This is now completely compatible with Steam Mover. You can also just cut and paste the entire FFVII game folder and move it where you want from the STEAM directory. The Game Converter will detect your installation type. It will ask you to type your game path manually if you have moved your STEAM FF7 install or if it can't find one. If you haven't moved your STEAM FF7 install, you can just hit enter and it will do its thing. It is fully compatible with Steam FF7 in all 4 languages. You can change your language in FF7 STEAM by right clicking on the Final Fantasy VII entry in your Library, and choosing the bottom selection, properties. Then select language and there is a dropdown box. You must do this before using Kompass63's GameConverter. It is still necessary to move your FFVII install outside of the Program Files(system) area.

GameConverter will ask for you what language you would like to use if you are using the 2012 version, E S F G
Game Converter is now compatible with 1998 PC version for backwards compatibility and future uninstall functionality.

Thanks for this utility, Kompass63. Some of you guys passing through just don't understand how much work goes into this stuff.

Any chances for this to work with the japanese version?   :-\
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Template on 2013-08-08 19:26:21
Japanese version converter is probably not possible at all because of file structure and language characters.

I want to make one note about Game Converter compatibility. Game Converter uses the files that come with the 2012 or STEAM FF7 release, and splices in the 1998 ff7.exe. Because of this, certain mods that are only compatible with other old ff7 files from 1998 (like Menu Overhaul) are not yet fully compatible. Once a new version of the utility ToughScript (which MenuOverhaul makes use of) is released, this issue will be completely addressed.

As for the actual incompatibility--I am not sure what problems exist, but I think it is safe to say there will be problems somewhere in the game script if you don't use bootleg to put MenuOverhaul on after GameConverter. For English 2012 installs with MenuOverhaul in mind, GameConverter isn't necessarily needed, you can just run bootleg. For STEAM and foreign language installs, I think gameConverter is the way to go, but if you want to use MenuOverhaul, bootleg may be necessary.

It would be somewhat provisionally, some English data must be inserted and the improvements by SE are gone.

Post by: Template on 2013-08-09 07:28:42
I really don't like the idea of changing this program from the way it is. I think it makes sense to use the new files. But if Reunion MenuOverhaul/Retranslation comes out tomorrow... and it's only working on 1998 flevels... (I'm pretty sure Dan's warned us that it will only work with 1998 flevel) then maybe it is a good idea to alter GC's output flevel. It seems to be the only new file there is a problem with. We know they altered the script in at least 1 or two places. I'm guessing it would be easier to change the GC flevel than it would be to change Menu Overhaul or ToughScript. But I also don't know the status of those projects (well, MO is nearly complete).

Edit: removed incorrect info about changes to flevel in 2012 and STEAM. I don't know what they fixed, if anything, other than messing with the script somewhere.

The adjusted movie script is a question of putting an extra 720MB of stuff on a GC install to fix an error that is probably harmless. I don't know what is best for either question... but the movie script is here on the forum, I can make a thread about it, but it seems a bit silly and almost illegal to post a collection of movies that were upscaled by SE and have simply had their sound ripped out and reencoded. So I'm not going to do that. I do think it's a pretty cool trick, though, and it would be fun to watch GameConverter whip out all 105 movies reencoded in under one minute.

Then there is the security disc check. Newbies are confused by that and I do not have time to make a bloomin tutorial on mounting ISOs or renaming a USB memory stick. I think there comes a point where you have to stop making a program user friendly and let the user learn about their computer or not.

I plan to make a new topic for the flevel, so we could make our own patches. I have currently fixed some of the stopping sound bugs (the Mako Reaktors and the ship).
My idea is, that many person will work on different scenes for faster patching. Possible changes: adding background sound, change the color of the scene light for a character (I made some tests with this and got nice results), a better model size, adding some animations to a character (for example I have added some animations to Cloud to make him look sad when Aerith dies - after the fight with Jenova) and complete script enhancements.
It is possible to use Iros mod manger to implement it. My only concern is, how this could work with the Reunion.
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Template on 2013-08-09 08:56:18
I wish I understood why the MIDI playback is restarting after battles... I don't know if it is a function of Aali's driver or something the game code had messed up from the beginning. I hate testing vanilla STEAM or 2012. I'm doing install after install after install of bootleg all of a sudden to make .iros out of the adjusted models and things that PitBrat and VGR did. There will be available--in time--an iro for mode changing. It will include all complete difficulty mods and gameplay mods like Aerith revival which are made compatible through bootleg. So there will be a config option for this Mode.iro mod through 7thHeaven which will allow you to switch modes or turn Aeris revival on off etc.

This is only possible because PitBrat and the other developers are allowing us to do these things and giving permission, or at least everyone's not telling me to go jump in a lake. Perhaps the development of more convenient ways of modding the game will attract more artists and developers to create new material.

It is possible to use Iros mod manger to implement it. My only concern is, how this could work with the Reunion.
Flevel changes of any kind will be compatible with Reunion Menu Overhaul. The Retranslation is the sticky part. If the game text script has been altered by flevel changes, it will not be compatible with the retranslation, but only that portion of the Reunion is affected.

I am sure Luksy will add support for 2012 ts when he completes the update, and it does fix a few bugs from the original flevel.  It is probably best to use it.. especially since I am thinking of postponing Reunion regardless until ts new is completed.  What we need is a new universal flevel that fixes numerous bugs but does not alter the text structure.
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Template on 2013-08-10 19:58:03
...And finally it sinks in. OK! So Kompass is right to use the new flevels. Luksy will come through for us. We just need to put a note for people not to use the retranslation preview with GameConverter for now.

That's too few information!

What OS,what architecture,  UAC on or off, what compatibility modes, have you tried to start ff7config, what tells the ff7_GC.log (etc) ?
Title: Re: FF7 Game Converter -BETA-
Post by: Isuldor on 2014-01-30 08:03:31
Sorry about that, I was posting from my phone while heading off to work.  That was a Windows 7 x64 system. UAC on. Non-system directory. Subsequently I realized "New Folder" is a product of Kranmer's conversion app, while trying to set it up for a friend I saw the same issue. I suspect "New Folder" gets created and then it should be removed after files are moved to the correct location, so seeing that folder is a symptom of the patch failing.  It would be nice if either of these apps were open source, or if the process that they execute were described in detail.  Otherwise I'm left to diff the directory and registry for changes to try to figure out what you're doing.

On an side note (nothing to do with this conversion app), ff7config.exe was just crashing on friend's pc. It made me wonder why it's still necessary when we're using Aali's opengl driver.  I'm tempted to diff the registry and document all the records necessary for the game to run so we can make that file obsolete.  I ended up telling my friend to wait for MO R02.

This is a known bug of Nvidias Optimus solution. The wraper.dll conflicts with it.

C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\coprocmanager  --> 'Nvd3d9wrap.dll' rename it to '_Nvd3d9wrap.dll'. Change it back after you have setuped the config.

Oh fascinating.  Thanks  ;D

Update: The issue I reported before must have been my own fault, sorry about that. Out of curiosity I went back and formatted that machine, using process monitor and winmerge to watch the registry and diff the folders.  I had made a backup of a previous configuration including registry keys that worked. After observing what your app does (hoping to identify the bug) the game ended up working afterall. So your patch definitely works on win7 64-bit.  My apologies!

Second edit: I can run ff7.exe without running ff7config.exe at all by setting the following registry key:

Code: [Select]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Sound]
"Sound_GUID"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
There, no more dependency on ff7config.exe!  You can test this by setting the key back to its default, and ff7.exe will require ff7config to be run again:
Code: [Select]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Sound]

First gripe before you ever know what's going on...  :x

It would be nice if either of these apps were open source, or if the process that they execute were described in detail.  Otherwise I'm left to diff the directory and registry for changes to try to figure out what you're doing.
My GC is not intended as open source, but it is a self-extracting WinRar archive.
So you can unpack the EXE with WinRar or (maybe) other packers.
The most important file that I have made, is the "FF7_GameConverter_0.9b.bat".
Anyone who knows anything about bat files can very accurately comprehend everything, including the changes to the registry.

It made me wonder why it's still necessary when we're using Aali's opengl driver.   I'm tempted to diff the registry and document all the records necessary for the game to run so we can make that file obsolete.
Aalis driver works exclusively with the old (1998) version of FF7.
For this reason, the conversion of the Rerelease or Steam release is mandatory.
A converter (no matter which one) will never be "obsolete"
But I have hope that my converter is taken over by PitBrat and will be integrated in the next bootleg.

Second edit: I can run ff7.exe without running ff7config.exe at all by setting the following registry key:
Code: [Select]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Sound]
"Sound_GUID"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
Congratulations!  ;D
You have one (of two) keys found, which causes the old FF7.exe to start the FF7Config.exe if there is an empty value.
With the FF7Config.exe the correct value is then entered.
The value 00 is wrong and leads to a crash.
Another problem is that the key among the different requirements has to be at various positions.
Even to start with admin right or not makes a difference.
I have FF7-old installed under many different conditions and checked the registry.
I think I have covered all the conditions and the matching keys, but I'm only human :-)
My GC deletes exactly this value in (hopefully) all positions, so FF7Config.exe is called automatically.
Problem is that all of its programs must be started with the same conditions, otherwise sets FF7Config.exe the keys in a different position, as they be read from the FF7.exe afterwards.

ff7config calculates the value of "Sound_GUID"
Unfortunately, I do not know how to find out this value otherwise

We don't use midi anymore so when does it crash?
The game wants to play MIDIs.
That it can be diverted to other music files does not matter, for the game, the MIDI functionality must be available.

ff7config + nvidia can crash as Kaldarasha said
It would may be possible to integrate the appropriate settings in the converter, but I can not correct because I do not have Nvidia's Optimus solution.

The game requires a volume with name "FF7DISC1" (or FF7DISC2 or FF7DISC3).
This can be a USB stick, SD card or a hard drive partition, that does not matter.
Thanks AnyCDv2 of Kranmer only one volume is required.

The 0.8.1 driver update isn't good for Bootleg (also for those who have an old graphic card). Can you make a build with 0.7.11b?
I also suggest (if you haven't done it already) to move the music files from the re-releases to path the new driver read them out.

Maybe you can convert them with Black Chocobo:
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=9625.0

The save is stored in ...Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII Steam\user_*****.
The old version has the saves stored in the root directory of the game under save.
So you can also try to move the save**.ff7 from documents\... to save.

I am not sure if it was discusses before here (or somehwere else), but i tried to use the latest converterm and it does work pretty well. It still has a problem with certain install paths. For example "D:\Program Files (x86)\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII\"  is not working. He will say that he cannot access the path because of the syntax "\Square". You could fix that by code or you have to manually specify the path like "D:\Progra~2\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII", then it is working. It is really just a minor suggestion of fixing.

I wonder if i apply the converter on my fresh steam install and then apply the Bootleg40 i could be able to play my game in FRENCH!
The hardcore mod from EQ2Alyza config is good fun but i would like to keep the normal mod with FRENCH text . What can i do for it ?

Even without using the converter i had to move some file from the steam relaease from x:/GAMES/FF7/data/lang-fr to the good directory to apply the PATCH from BOOTLEG40.
My game is working fine right now execpt the language bother me a little bit ;)

Thx in advance for any help.

PS: If you need someone for a french translation of an How to, let me know.

The converter has always worked fine for me, but is there a list of all the registry key areas needed to be changed in order to move a full install?

I am also having FF7_GameConverter_7H getting stuck at "Patching...". Would love some help, I've tried pretty much everything, it isn't like it isn't finding the directory or thinking it is a bad install, it just fails to do anything...

How do I know that the Game Converter has finished doing it's thing?

It stops here:
"Please check over the settings for FF7Config...

1) Sound tab should have a Sound device set.
2) Perform the Sound and MIDI tests.
3) Graphics-Tab can be ignore."

Is it safe to exit Command Prompt after the sound tests?

PS. My experience has always been that once a program has done it's thing in Command Prompt that it either automatically closes, or leaves you with a message to press Enter to finish and close it.
It's not a problem, I just don't want to close it incomplete or leave it going when I don't have to.

Thanks in advance.

You click OK in FF7Config when you're done checking everything, then the Command Prompt will continue to the next steps.

Thanks for your reply EQ2Alyza.

My problem was I was using the non-7th Heaven version of Game Converter, where it would get to a certain point and stop.
Shocking, I usually pride myself on reading instructions thoroughly too. I blame the excitement and rush to play!

All sorted now though.

I used this to convert my Square Enix store version to be able to install the Reunion mod, which seemed to go fine, no errors or anything during the patching, but the Reunion mod installer tells me that my FF7_en.exe is the incorrect file size. Is it possible there could've been an issue with the conversion still?

Phew, again after the use of the converter you need to install the reunion mod on top of the '98 release (which will patch the ff7.exe not the ff7_en.exe). You need to change that within the installer setup of the reunion. By default it will detect the rerelease. However there is another reason why it fails in your case. The re-release from 2012 hasn't gotten the latest patch (which has removed the DRM) and this causes that the reunion can't patch it. But this only matters if you wouldn't use the GC.

Okay, then I guess there has to be something wrong with the conversion. I don't know the details of how the Converter should work, but according to DLPB after the conversion I shouldn't even have a ff7_en.exe in the folder, but I do. The Reunion installer doesn't even go far enough to let me chose any options, the error message saying I got the wrong file size of ff7_en.exe (Which I find it odd that it checks for, if it's supposed to patch ff7.exe) pops up before I get to do that.

When you do the conversion do install it to different folder? The Reunion mod does automatically select which version will be patched.

I've tried running Game Converter from a different folder from the game directory, if that's what you mean. I've also ran the Converter from the game directory for that matter.
I install my Square store version to D:\FINAL FANTASY VII. Then I run the Converter, it recognizes my game install location as D:\FINAL FANTASY VII, I select E when prompted what language, and the patcher does its thing without issues. After this I run the Reunion installer, point it to D:\FINAL FANTASY VII, and upon pressing Next it warns me my ff_en.exe is the wrong size.

Delete ff7_en.exe and try to install the reunion mod again. Can you actually start the game through ff7.exe?

Okay so deleting ff7_en.exe solved it, Reunion installed and works fine. Except it now plays midi music for some reason. So, is this possibly another problem with the Converter, or do I move over to the Reunion thread? God this is so frustrating. The Square store version seems to be a piece of shit.

Install this mod: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12787.0

If it still plays midi, open the ff7_opengl.cfg with the Editor/Notepad and remove the '#' before the line: music_plugin = plugins/vgmstream_music.fgp

Hello,
I wanted to test some graphical mods, so I wanted to try 7th Heaven. However, it seems that the converter for 7H does actually break my game...
I managed to run FF7 on my computer "perfectly" in past, with difficulty mods only. I haven't tried graphical mods so far. However, after I patch with the converter for 7H, some things became strange. First of all, the game runs really slow. Walking, opening the main menu, everything feels like walking with glue on the soles now. Besides, some letters and digits suddenly have underlines for some reason. I tried to mess a little bit with the Graphics section in FF7 config, but that didn't help.

I have Win7 64 Bit, Graphic Board is AMD Radeon R4, and my Game version is 1998 PC release (German)
And of course, I also patched on a fresh, new install.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, please?

At least the converter does SOMETHING for you soku, it still just sits there doing nothing for me unfortunately. I had this mostly up and running at one point on Windows 8.1 but am not having such luck on Windows 10... Good luck in finding a solution!

Would it be possible to find a list of all the changes the game converter is doing?

I'm trying to play Tifa's Final Heaven in Linux, and I have everything working except for this single executable, which errors out during the install. I realized this probably isn't a supported use case, but if I could just see everything that the script does, I could replicate it and play the game.

Alternatively, would it work if I installed on a Windows machine and then copied the files over, or is that Game Converter also making changes to the Windows Registry that I would need to replicate?

For reference, here's what happens when you try to run this file in Wine:

The exe is a packed rar archiv. You can open it with WinRAR or 7zip.

Hi , I have a question about FF7 Game Converter,  i used it to convert rerelease version. Is the structure folder of direct folder change ? I mean the folder names in direct folder should be cr_us , disc_us , menu_us, high-us, snowboard-us, world_us or without the "us"  :cr , disc , menu, high, snowboard, world

It should be without any _us or -us.
