7th Heaven / Re: [FF7] 7th Heaven+FFNx Guide&FAQ

So, then, C:\Games\FF7 can also be read, "wherever it is that Final Fantasy VII is installed," so long as I know where said address is on my computer setup. Is that right?

edit:
I figured out the mistake I was making.

From the guide:

Because of the way the opening half of these two parts of Step 6 were worded, my mind skipped over the 2nd part of it. One says "locate" and the other says "navigate to." It was my fault, I didn't realize you were asking me to rename two of these files (whose filenames are identical) in separate locations.

I'd have made "navigate to [directory]" its own bullet point, there, and then another bullet point that is identical to the previous one "locate the file [filename]" but I get not wanting to be pedantic about things. Sorry, chief.

No, don't feel like you are being pedantic about anything. You are describing the core issue that caused me to write the guide in the first place lol. SO many people were confused about this step and made mistakes, creating the appearance that their entire 7th heaven / modded game was corrupted and wouldnt work ever again or something.

I am not exaggerating, dozens of people either messaged me directly or contacted me on discord asking for help because they misinterpreted the original install instructions on the ffnx github.

With that said, I went through many iterations to describe the process in what I (with conformation from others) decided was the most clear and understandable way to do the task correctly. However, There are all kinds of issues introduced when a language barrier (non-native english speaker) is involved or just personal interpretation of the words. English is all kinds of messed up even for native speakers lol.

Another complication is the fact that in computing, there are multiple ways to accomplish the same task, and the way I would interpret the directions and the process to execute them might be different than yours. Anyone can make a simple mistake along the way, and not realize it - but be completely convinced they read and followed the instructions explicitly. I have had arguments over it with people swearing up and down they read it and did it right, only to find out they originally made a mistake. Just an inconvenient issue with human existence itself I guess lmao.

sorry for the legnth of this post, I can get extremely long winded with my explanations, and I havent even explained why the current version of the guide is the way it is yet :p

Okay you may have skipped all that crap above but here is my real explanation for the current wording.

Assuming you have nothing but steam, 7th heaven, and your internet browser open at this point in the guide I tell you to "Open" a directory. (meaning explorer / your file manager)

The way I would do this when following a guide that has explicit paths written and formatted in an easily copy-able way i just copy (Ctrl+C) the path from the guide / 7h itself then "run" (WinKey+R) that path to explorer. (Ctrl+V) Using suggested defaults, and copy+pasting the information is a foolproof way of avoiding mistakes, as long as the guide is correct lol. The term "Open" is used for this step (and others) because that is the term the run dialog uses.

Once explorer is already open, you can then "Navigate" to further locations by using the same method as the initial step by copying the path, but then pasting it into the address bar of explorer. You could keep using the run dialog for every step but if you are not closing the window when you are done, then you might end up with a lot of windows by the end. It's hard to know what someone will do and I can't accommodate every situation unfortunately.

The reason step 6 is in 3 bullet points and not 5, is because the guide is already littered with them. It's a mess and I feel bad lol. you are doing 2 things in each bullet point and I didnt think it would be too much to expect people to understand that. Locating/Identifying a file by it's name, and rename it. Then navigate somewhere else, locate the file and rename it. I suppose a better way now that I am deep diving into it once again would be to say "rename this (separate) file." or something that implies it is a unique file itself.

Anyway if you read that then idk, you have too much time on your hands or something lol. I don't think Ill be changing step 6 in the guide, but you will have to wait a little bit to understand the reason why. ;)

Ciaobuongiorno. I was wondering, your guide says to install to C:\7th Heaven\ and also, from this very thread, it seems that it looks for FF7's installation in C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\FF7.exe.

I have Steam installed on an external usb Solid State Drive. Is that going to make it incompatible with this installation process? Your guide seems to skip over this part, unless I'm just not reading it carefully enough. Or do I simply direct it to my installation folder, regardless of which drive it's on? Will it be ok to install 7th Heaven on a drive other than my primary HDD (C:\)? Does this work, or should I install it on the primary HDD?

7th Heaven (The mod manager client application) is installed into C:\7th Heaven\ by default. The modded game installation is installed by the 7th Heaven app into C:\Games\FF7\ they are 2 different things.

regardless of whether your installation is in a default location or not, as long as you replace each occurrence with your location, configure 7th heaven to do the same, and 7th heaven has read/write/access permissions to the location, it should work.

You always have to take everything so seriously Sega lol. You don't know me by now or my inherent sarcastic nature I mean come on look at my face and tell me I look serious. I know what an escort is but thought it was pretty funny to look at it from the perspective that I said.

If you think about it, using your definition, the literal meaning of the piece of armor is the "guard guard" sounds pretty silly to me. At least with my way it means protection the actual guard of an escort. Why would it be restricted to female characters anyway in your "proper" definition. You saying girls cant protect something or someone valuable?

(<---- again look at the face) :p

Hey Sega, is there any specific reason why Aerith can't equip the Escort Guard? I have it, and it shows up for other characters, but when I try to equip it it to her, it's not in the list!

It's for male characters only. Its a guard for an escort.  Its like that in vanilla as well I am pretty sure. This game was from an earlier age where the social normal was for an escort to be a girl I suppose :p It's opposite is the minerva band, only girls can equip that.

Welp, tried verifying the integrity of the game cache, and reinstalled 7h and.... Same problem. I guess I'll have to do it the old way, which still sometimes doesn't work. (sigh)

I havent come across an issue that we couldnt solve, or at least find the exact cause of in my time here, so this is definitely a very rare issue that you are having. It must be unique to your system configuration if the game is verified to be correct as well as 7h. Maybe your graphics card or your drivers are messed up somehow? Something might be wrong with your actual windows installation or configuration? Registry corruption? Permission read/write/execute issues? Compatibility settings? I heard before that DEP (data execution prevention) can cause the game to crash but I thought it required non-default settings for that to be an issue. I am mostly at a loss here for your case and I am sorry about that.

Okay I couldn't find anything unusual/any problems in the applog, but here is the picture of what happened: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCISga0t8g1pZ80UsZugTitA. I tried everything I could, disabling mods, changing driver and launcher settings, clearing the texture cache, but nothing seemed to work.

If it is happening with no mods enabled, and is not showing an error in the log then the only cause I can think of is that your game installation is somehow corrupted, or is an unsupported version of the game. if this is the english 2013 steam version, verify the integrity of the game cache and reinstall 7h and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, then I have no idea, sorry.

I'm having a problem when trying to play the game in fullscreen... The screen keeps flicking, I don't know if this is the right word for this, but the screen glitches basically...

I tried to activate vsync on the FFNx.cfg but it doesn't work. If I use 7th Heaven without FFNx the fullscreen works perfectly and in windowed mode the game works fine, do you have any idea of what could possibly be causing this?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The screen glitch happens even when I run FF7 without mods.

I havent heard of that issue before, I will ask odin about it later and see what he says. Have you tried different backend renderer options? dx11 instead of opengl? I usually play in a borderless window, and if the problem persists without resolution then I recommend you to do the same I suppose.

« on: 2020-05-29 15:04:15 »
Problem is that i can select no shaders except for those listed by default.
Also, 2.0 doesn't allow me to set a rendering resolution higher than my monitor one, 1.54 allowed that too.
Also, i don't understand why 2.0 needs to overwrite ff7.exe restoring it to default version for each game launch.

all of those issues can be fixed with manual intervention it seems like to me anyway. The reason why it doesnt allow that by default im not really sure of. unabomb might change that in the future or who knows

7th heaven 1.54 can do it... why 2.0 can't?

I don't know? What have you tried to get it to work that hasn't?

11
You can apply the patch at your desire but you may not get the same benefits because there some other internals that are required to work with that. FFNx does work with Win7 just fine, make sure you download the latest release.

Oh you actually did implement a win7 fix already? I totally did not see you mention that anywhere I will change that information in the guide I have still been telling people to use v1.6.1 for win7  :-[

I got 7th Heaven 2.0 and it works fine, but every time I launch the game and everyone gets off the train, the background dissappears and it's just a white screen with the character models, and it says "The Game Driver Has Crashed!" Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is what I mean: file:///C:/Users/Kalen%20Scheschuk/Pictures/t.PNG

Thank you

that link you tried to post is a local file specific to your computer only. you have to actually upload the image somewhere and link to it or attach it directly to your post (but you probably cant attach files directly with your post count)

I likely cant know exactly what your  issue is from that anyway better to post information from the applog than to show a screenshot of the game for crashing issues.

Is there a way to add custom shaders to the list?

I know FFNx adds its own shaders, but I dont know if there is a way to add your own custom ones and have the game use them automatically.

I wouldn't be writing that post if I didn't think I did everything accordingly. You are right, I had to remove "#" in front of lines. I think this step preassumes knowledge that the average person doesn't have, though. I've been messing with config/ini files before but never had to "uncomment" a line before changing it.

You are correct in the fact that its strange to have the cfg file formatted in the way it currently is. Almost every config file in existence has the ability to comment lines, and usually does have information in-file via comments, because separating the information about the variables and their possible values into a web page or different file would likely cause even more problems.

Most of the time, however, cfg files with comments don't actually have the default values configured as comments in the first place. And I don't really know why Odin set it up that way, because it would function just fine without the default values being commented and would be way less confusing.

I don't know how I could make it more clear in the guide that you need to do this though, it is clarified in 2 different bullet points with capital letters right at the beginning of the section. If you follow the guide you shouldnt make this mistake. But it still happens on a very regular basis. I will talk to Odin about changing the format of the file for the future.

Yep that 60FPS mod was doing it. Got everything running just fine now. Played for a little while with no crashes either. Thanks a ton. I'm hoping that the memory allocation problem can be fixed in 7H 2.1 and FFNx can be fully implemented into 7H down the line as well. Huge thanks to OatBran and unab0mb for helping me to understand this problem and find a work around.

Thats great to hear your issue has been solved! Im always glad to help in any way I can if you end up having more  issues in the future dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks a ton man. Appreciate the immediate response on this. I'm going to attempt to turn off the 60fps and see what happens with that. I actually already went through the DDS process and the sluggishness continued but I will try to switch off that 60fps option and see what happens. Thanks again for the help.

Yeah, no problem glad to be of help. I'm sorry I didnt have the info about disabling the 60FPS mod in the guide until now, because that is an extremely important thing you need to do. I am confident that doing that will help or outright solve your issue. I hope everything ends up working out for you and you have a great modded gaming experience  ;D

So I got everything going good and got the game to run but the combat runs very sluggishly and slow compared to before.

Yes, if you continue reading the guide from where you left off, you will find the solution to that issue as well. FFNx prefers to use DDS texture format, and most of the catalog mods have not yet been hosted in that format. There are things you can do to help with the issue if you would rather not go through the effort to convert you modpack to DDS.

First and foremost, DISABLE the "60 FPS Battles" mod located in the "Animations" catalog IRO. This mod is severely incompatible with FFNx and it is also very poorly described as to what the mod actually does. It is not worth using in any case with FFNx so that is the absolute first thing you should do. I need to amend this information into the guide, and for that I apologize.

If your game continues to not perform as you would like, turning down the resolution and or the internal resolution scale options in ffnx.cfg can help with performance, as well as switching the backend renderer to Direct3D11 instead of OpenGL (with some cards anyway, especially AMD card will benefit from this)

If the problem persists after all of that, then you have no choice but to switch your mods to DDS format. All of the information needed to do that is in the guide, so make sure you please read the guide in its entirety. Like I have said from the beginning, if you follow the guide front to back correctly, you will be very close to the most optimal performance you can get out of (non-reunion) modded ff7 right now.

Okay FFNx it is. I have an already installed steam version. Will 7th heaven still work after I install FFNx?

yep, as long as you do everything correctly it will still function as normal, and will be orders of magnitude more stable. it is easy to make a mistake though, as evidenced by the countless reports i get every day lol. i would recommend following my guide and you will be golden

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=19932.0

keep in mind however, that manually upgrading or changing your 7h install is not officially supported or recommended. dont take any issues you have to unabomb or anything like that. make backups of your personal data/saves just to be safe

I've been experiencing this exact issue as well. and I've done a lot of reading into others having this problem too and from what I can gather the only true "fix" for this potentially is 7H 2.1. So I guess my question is, is there anytime frame for 7H 2.1?

Unabomb has said many, many times that 7H 2.1 is going to be mostly a bug fixing update and has consistently denied that an update to the graphics driver will be included in that update. If you are dead set against not installing FFNx manually, then you are most likely going to be stuck with the constant crashes until 7H 2.2 who knows when that will be. Its possible una might change his mind in the mean time, but I wouldnt expect all your problems to magically be solved with 2.1 Una strives for stability and polish with his software and it takes a substantial amount of time to test things before they are officially implemented. Nothing is stopping you from taking matters into your own hands and fixing it for yourself whenever you want though.

It was my mistake. I initially put the FFNx.dll into Resources\Game Driver and changed the name to "7H_GameDriver.dll". This step confused me because there is a file with the same name in the game folder. Turns out that when you put the same file in the wrong place the game will refuse to start. Anyway I got it to start now but it's in a tiny window and it will ignore any settings I changed in my FFNx.cfg.

Yet again, I guarantee you are making another common mistake. It is the entire reason why I wrote the guide. Read it. Dollars to doughnuts you are leaving hash marks (#) in front of values in the cfg file, turning them into comments and not anything to be loaded at runtime.

I have if problem, too. It's very annoying. There are some areas in the game where I literally couldn't progress because of the constant crashing (battles at Mt. Nibel for instance) where only launching the game without mods would let me progress further.

I tried installing the FFNx driver according to the instructions on github for people that have 7h installed, it made the game unlaunchable, though. So I'm hoping for an official 7th heaven fix.

did you follow my own guide or just the readme on the ffnx github? I am willing to bet that you misread their instructions or made some other common mistake.

follow my guide and it will work, if it doesnt for some reason come to the discord and we will figure it out

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=19932.0

Be aware though, if you are using windows 7 then that may be the cause of the problem as well. Odin is working on a fix for that, but there is an old version of ffnx that you can download that will work with win7, read about it further in the thread i linked to my guide

Hi everybody i'm trying to use the seventh heaven mod launcher but i have some problems. I followed all the instructions but it still doesn't launch the game. Can u help me please?
Here it is the error code:
### Launching Final Fantasy VII ###
Checking FF7 is not running ...
Checking FF7 .exe exists at C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\FF7.exe ...
Verifying installed game is compatible ...
Error code: YARR! Unable to continue. Please report this error on the Qhimm forums.
Failed to launch FF7. View the above log for details.
The absolute fist thing said in the guide

if you are getting the YARR! error, then 7th heaven is detecting that your game exe is a pirated copy. Even if your copy is not pirated, you may have applied some kind of crack or non-official hex edit, or possibly something advertised as a language conversion. If this is a legitimate purchased copy of FF7 then you will have to message unabomb with proof of purchase or come to the discord for further support. Don't waste his or my time with lying about a pirated version please.

And it launches without FFNx?
Are you sure that you renamed and copied the files to the correct folders?

You coud try https://github.com/Rumbah2/psychic-garbanzo/releases to install it. If it still does not work then you'll have to wait for OatBran ;) .
There is absolutely no way in my mind that could be a possibility. FFNx has nothing to do with the piracy check, and is loaded afterwards.

21
try manually downloading via torrent or an http mirror, not sure what that error means but the mods are still available in a lot of places

22
Holy crap those look AMAZING! Quality work, thank you so much for all the time you must have put into this

Through the support process of @Darxide's issue we realized that the recent stable release of FFNx is actually incompatible with Windows 7. I will add the info to the guide soon but for now I'll just post this here. Using any version above 1.6.1 of FFNx most likely will not work with Windows 7.

Here is the link to a compatible version https://github.com/julianxhokaxhiu/FFNx/releases/tag/1.6.1

There is no ffnx.log file generated.
You probably need to edit your ffnx.cfg file (or download one from the guide) with debugging options enabled

Followed the steps to the letter (starting from Step 6) and the game crashes immediately. I hear the first note or two of the SYW intro video and then boom. I've double, triple, and quadruple checked that I did everything laid out in the guide.

Yes, I have the stable release and not canary. Yes I have the 1998 and not the Steam download.

what does your log say?
Code: [Select]
ffnx.log (not the 7h app.log)

I haven't heard of many cases where the game will crash immediately after actually launching. You may want to come to the discord and get faster paced support cause I am always active there and I don't always check the forums. Thanks for reading the guide though hope we can sort this out.
