Hi!!! I done a new textures for the ff8 main characters.
Its posible put in the pc game?
I made a test using a Texmod and epsxe with next3d 13.5 plugin, a bad plugin but the one plugin with works texmod. I need your help for put the textures in the pc version!!! Xd
Was a really fun and a hard work done this Xd
I try finish the all main characters :P

I Relase a first pack with many characters!!

this pack contain the rinoa,quistis, selphie, squall and irvine textures and model in collada format.
this textures are the finals version, anyway I must drawing the closed eyes for each character and retouch the rinoa weapon.

Excellent textures man, though might I suggest if you can, either space the eyes out on them a bit more, or reduce the sizes a tiny bit? I'm not sure which it is, but some of the characters look a bit off
Other then that though, excellent work! I never expected to see this kind of stuff done for FF8 as well

FF8 characters have always been freakishly leggy. It's a quirk of the art style. I think it's just a bit more obvious here because of the pose.

I hope find the form for put the new textures in the game, maybe the Deling program in a future allows change the texture models.

I really want make new textures for others versions of main characters like rinoa party dress, but I cant riped the field models. I use bitturn for the extration of the field models but the charactes looks like this:

the Squall and Zell field model was the only rip with a nice corporal position :)
so if someone have the field models in a format like obj or collada please send me the files for make new textures :)

FF8 is so much better than FF7! I'm so glad it is FINALLY getting some love. I hope soon we can actually have some mods for it, because there are nearly an endless number of them for FF7, but hardly any for FF8. FF8 needs more love, it is a better quality game.

@LeonhartGR somehow when I got this avatar I knew you might like it because from a past comment of yours here I noticed you are a FF8 lover and since my avatar is a little big and cool it could get FF8 lover's attention haha. xD I'll pm you a link.
Also, I would like to say that some months ago there was someone interested on working on FF8 and pm'ed me about it talking about creating a group or something. Well I'm back here and I'm gonna stay here for a while so if this person is still here please contact me again because I totally forgot your name. XD I may not be a programmer but FF8 is still my favorite game ever so if I can do anything to help, even if just ideas, I'll be glad to help. ^^ Starting with the musics since I think it's the prior thing.

the textures and models go into a .dat file. i think we dont have a way to get that yet

He only has them in game on the PS1 version using an emulator with a DirectX 9 plugin and Texmod, unless Aali pulls something out of the air with the next version of the driver, it'll be a long while before we see these in the PC version.

Umm.. Yes.. there's many app for DAT to PNG converter, but none to reverse it..

Programmers used a type of compression format in the days of Amiga, when FF7 and FF8 was released they used the tools to compress data in a format nowsday is impossible to change. And they lost the source codes, bargh!

I try used a psx tim tools like "timviewer" for import the textures in the models, but the tools for psx games only can insert textures with the same size of the originals :/

Any updates as of late? Because, I haven't played FF8 yet, and I don't intend to until this project is released. After seeing the rise in quality, I don't want to try to play this game with the base textures.

Excellent retexture! It really looks like Squall!
By the way, you can view the DAE and OBJ with other programs too, just flip the textures vertically. Noesis has a habit of exporting them flipped like that.

This has nothing to do with Final Fantasy. But when I was doing modding for Dragon Ball Z games. I used a program called Game Graphic Studio to edit the model textures. I would make an ISO from my game. Which I actually own, and import the .bin file into the program, locate the texture. Export it into Photoshop and make my edits there, then import it back into GGS. Then just make the ISO again and run the game to see if it worked. I have no clue if this will work for your project but its worth a shot.
You can even send me a sample of squall as a texture and I can see what I can do. Just noticed you posted a link to a sample haha. Alright Ill try and work with it with GGS and post what I figure out.
*Tried ripping the .bin files from the games but computer is being lame. I even tried making my discs a img/iso file and computer still wants to be a pain. If someone can try this out let me know how it works for you.*

Do you have these textures backed up in more than one place? If not, you should do so or else release the rest of them immediately, because someone's hard drive recently failed, and all the mods he hadn't already released were lost, including the Sephiroth mod he was working on. If you don't think the rest of the textures aren't ready enough for release -- even though I think they look spectacular as is -- please make such you have them backed-up somewhere so you don't lose all your progress.

hey man, all of these are looking really good, it's obvious you've put a lot of effort in!
but there are a couple of niggling things i've picked up on that seem like the root of a bad habit, and if we can get you out of them now... then great!
it mostly falls in the lips and the way you've textured them. almost everyone has this joker-like grimace going on. it's caused by two things.
1. dark outlines around the entire lip.
2. an upward curve and hyper extension of the corner of the lips.
i've done a small paintover to illustrate what i mean:

so a couple of things to bear in mind... the lower lip, unless there's lipstick involved, almost always blends into a natural skintone towards the corners, rather than having a harsh outline (note squall and zell vs rinoa).
for female characters particularly, but also heroic characters (in japanese illustration anyway) really push the filtrum shape to give the top lip that classical m shape. with lipstick, play around with colours a little more. using different shades of the same colour hue doesn't look quite right, so as an example i've used a brown shade, a red mid-tone, and a blue highlight in my example.
other than that it's all kickass man!

the outlines in the lips are a bit strange, I will edit in a future :P
when I done the Zell face, I drawing two mouth, a serious and smile mouth, so when I publish the textures I put the two textures.
I will edit too the rinoa lips.. its a really strange mouth Xd
the squall model in the image its a different case, because its the field model and the uv map and the poligonal faces are really strange, so when I put the texture in the model, the texture is distorted.

This would only work for the psx version, but can these be put into the game using a technique similar to wii scrubber? It lets you replace files in the .iso with custom ones of the same name and makes a new .iso with your files. This is used to put custom stages and characters in super smash bros brawl and play on dolphin. If someone did the same thing with a psx iso, then it could be used in an emulator. I don't even think there's a program that does this for psx games but I can dream :D

Magochocobo, I would try ultra iso or a similar program to try to at least implement them into a psx version to emulate using the strategy I mentioned.

Any DX9 based Emulator and plugin should be able to do it using Tex mod although I think he said only one plugin actually worked with Texmod but was buggy.

I used texmod with epsxe but the only a plugin work "next3d 1.5" but its a bit inestable and the battles menu dont appears and many others graphical bugs :/
I try use too some tim tools for the files, and I can extrac and insert the tim files in the models for the pc version but i can only insert new images with the same size :/
I hope someone find another method or build a new tool for edit the models.
anyway I uploaded a squal model for any user can be test in the game.

But at the very least, for now, you could downsample these HQ textures to the originals' sizes and repack them into the game, right? They would still look better than Square's textures (even though they would be the same sizes), and you could still use TexMod after the fact to upsample the textures' quality in-game.

Mirrorman95: you are right, even with a reduction of my hi res textures the models looks better, especially in the face. but some details in the clothes lost many details. I try edit the dat files, insert my reduced textures and test in the game.

The reduced textures look so much better than Square's, it's at least enough to make a first release for the PC version, even if this is still a WIP.
When the Birth By Sleep modding scene was active, they had a similar problem, because they couldn't replace textures or models in the game with larger ones, only with ones of lesser or equal size. For in order to insert something larger, they'd need to know how the game's LBA works (I'm pretty sure LBA means folder structure and file-hash system). I don't know if the issue with the FFVIII dat repacker is anything like this, but it's a possibility.
Anyway, a LD release wouldn't look as pretty, but at least the FF8 community could mod the characters into more than bland models with vague features.

otherwise a really great job, I personally imagine Quistis with red lipstick though..but a really really great job, hope this can be imported to the PC version aswell...

Doesn't TexMod come with a method to load an executable with modded textures automatically? There are plenty of mods to UE3 games like Duke Nukem Forever that require this implementation, since it's the only legal way to texture-mod UE3 games. Would that be a worthwhile solution?

I guess TexMod only works with DirectX9 games.

Sorry, I have not time for this, but I made other test with tim2view and I can replace the low res textures for my new textures but in low res, some characters works good and others no Xd... the game crash

We already can do that. The problem is putting ones in that are larger than the original. We can already replace textures and such that are the same or lesser size.

a yet unreleased version of this plugin will allow for texture replacement, I already asked him if i could get an early release to start trying to retexture games, However even though he said he'll release it for me, It has gone unheeded. maybe if you ask it'll show interest, Good luck to you

The version i linked is 1.42a So it's far newer than the one you linked. Good luck getting ahold of him, I've asked him 4 times over the course of 6 months, And he responded once with "I am having issues getting the latest version to compile, once i get it i'll send it to you" And he has since released the preview update of 1.44 and has shown it is working. But when i sent him a PM asking if i can still get it, he never responded.

Ok. I talked with him. So he told me:
1) that he works with psx and no with PC.
2) his method is not to fully change files, it's just replace real time textures that he place in special folder.
So i understand some. That our as i think Aali driver works same as his emu, no?
Dat mode works like i said: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=11960.0 so why we can't just made mod as SEED style if no chance to make it works how we wanna? or with Aali driver there some restrictions?

We already can do that. The problem is putting ones in that are larger than the original. We can already replace textures and such that are the same or lesser size.
How replace textures that are the same or lesser size? I've searched (and obviously failed), and I couldn't find how to do that.
I know we can replace .tex files using .png with aali's driver. I've tried messing with .tim converting them to bmp, editing then converting them back into .tim and replacing the existing .tim using deling. In the data\battle.fs rinoa's battle texture is d4c009.dat and I can extract it, but I don't know how to make a .dat to replace it. Or use something that does what aali's driver does to replace it.

for insert the this textures in se same resolution like the originals, I extrac the models with deling program(open the bat file whit the program), next I open the model with tim2view or timviewer, and extract the ogirnal textures and replace with the news ( I used the tim plugin for photoshop for save tim format images) and I use deling again for insert the modificated models in the game.

ishiki: this happens because the program detect the black color like a transparency. So in photoshop you must ajust the black (use selective color tool) for transform the black in a grey very very obscure, so the program will show the textures normal.

To much detail for a PSP model.

The author refers to the model as a "mesh mod", which suggests to me that it is an edit of a pre-existing game model. It's an XNALara model, and mesh mods are very common in that community. The hair seems to be taken directly from the Dissidia model with some changes, while the face appears to be an edit of either a DOA or Resident Evil character.
The point is that it's based off existing copyrighted models from other games, and as such wouldn't be allowed here.

I was able to extract the texture from the original game.
I think is possible to update the textures using Deling. It is able to repack almost everything.
The main problem is the disposition of your textures. while you have two layers, ES had rendered more than two layers, I had attached the extracted textures so you can work on proper mods.
please check this files. If you could reposition the skins, we can be able to finally import HR skins to the game using Deling!!!

well. is possible for you to submit the field.fl file? i know is a HUGE file, but that file (or main.fl?) contains all the textures for the characters. If you successfully embedded the HR graphics into the fl file, please record it on a video tutorial. I'm very sure this will save time for many of us.
also, some remarks of my last stream:
In short, what happened on the last stream confirms three things:
1. on Steam Version, you can modify the Audio using Roses and Wine, but you cannot add/modify or extract textures. the process is too complicated and I gave up after 3 hours of work and research. EAX library is the main problem, plus is not accepting aali's OpenGL driver.
2. The 2000 version, you can add custom textures and HR fonts, but you cannot use Roses and Wine. You can use aali's OpenGL Driver to add your graphic customizations.
3. Megachocobo's High Resolution Textures does not match the textures embeded in the game. please check this file with the megachocobo's textures vs SE textures, way too different : http://www.mediafire.com/download/8akdzr93hjnhv59/texture%20comparison.rar
So we are in a checkmate here. we need a developer that may go into what is not allowing the OpenGL driver to be loaded by the steam game, so all the mods can be added without problems.

If steam FF8 is like steam FF7 then it is using DirectX and not OpenGL. The proof in this was the shader files for FF7 which are in FX format and using PS2_0 which only allows a small instruction count. So I side loaded my own DirectX DLL for FF7 and that worked, which furthered the proof FF7 was using DirectX now for the steam version.
A custom openGL driver for steam FF7 therefore is impossible. I have a feeling the same for FF8. What we can do is compile our own DirectX but to what end, I don't know. Check out SweetFX for examples of side loading your own directX DLL.

It would still look way better than the original model textures. Im all for it. Cant wait for the release. Good job guys. Keep it up and dont let us wait too long, lol. I'm so excited. You can get a battle model viewer for FFVIII here: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12778.0
It only works with battle models (*.dat files).

You can't. It only works with Tonberry by Omzy, and that is only compatible with the Steam version.

I don't think Tonberry has implemented any of the model textures yet. Omzy has said that Tonberry can support any texture in the game, but in order for it to be implemented, it's up to us to pick apart the game files and find exactly which pieces correspond to the textures we want to change. If you're able to do that, pack them up and send them over to Omzy. He'll take a look at them and try to update the hashmap to support them.

Plus, we can't expect one man to find every file location for every texture and do it in a timely fashion. When he released Tonberry, he asked that we help him find those locations and send him the information accordingly. Then he does his part with Tonberry to make it compatible with a modders textures. It's all about the community working together.

I would like to see this mod happen, FF VIII in my opinion was up there, next to FFVII. IS there a way to also increase the polygons for the models i wonder? this would be a breakthrough for this game.

Okay... so I'm absolutely in love with these character mods. They must be in the game, darn it. :) I'm thinking of tracking down the needed file info, but I wanted to check first - is there anyone who's working on this yet?

So far, I've successfully managed to hash the rest of the battle textures, and, I am working on the uniforms as we speak, I'm wondering if Mago, you could perhaps work on a SeeD uniform for Squall? I can hash it to get it working in-game, all I need is the texture :D If that's possible? And also, if it's okay if I continue to use your textures to get them in-game?

You can install these textures by installing Berrymapper, which can only be run once you've installed the latest version of Tonberry. This thread itself is not an installable mod, just a collection of textures that can be processed into mods. The released textures themselves are incomplete as Magochocobo has yet to release Rinoa's Party Dress, Edea, Raijin, Kiros, and Ward; some of which he said needed to be retrieved from his other hard drive.
