Your version of FF8 is not supported. Get the nvidia version of 1.2 from Square, that should work.

Weirdly enought, I also can't seem to run it without your driver, the game starts, play the Eidos FMV, then crashes.
I'll try to get another ff8.exe to see if it solves the problem, but I'm not at my pc now, may try that later.
Thank you.

Custom graphics driver for FF7/FF8 [v.1-.7.6]
Please someone help. My FF8 crashes at Laguna Dream (First one), as soon as I switch screen it gets unhandled exception. I'm using Windows XP.. check APP.LOG and crash.dmp for more info. I think it also crashes at Laguna Dream if I attempt to go to menu (Junction, Item, Magic, GF etc..) I also provided save file. (Last save slot)

Crash.dmp APP.LOG and save -> http://www.speedyshare.com/497893381.html

Hopefully someone can help :)

PS something small about FF7: I also had a crash once in FF7 Last battle when you just wait for your limit meter to fill up, but that was only once. That occured almost right after the movie sequence ended, I'd say like 2 seconds. FF7 with the driver worked flawlessly in everything else and I really love this driver, hopefully I'll get FF8 to play smooth too :)

EDIT: Without the driver, it works fine. Also it seems like its not about the screen switching, but more like because of a battle event. I tried to use a debugger to sort out the problem, but couldn't really detect anything.

well APP.LOG is also provided here:

That's not supposed to happen AFAIK. Also I had no problems at all getting past the first dream sequence.

I just wanna to say thanks for this great little driver  :-D

Makes FF8 totally playable on Linux, with much better performance than in a crappy Win7

Thanks a lot!

(I've not yeat reached the Laguna part, I'll let you know what happens to me)

Hmm yeah, funny thing though it works without the driver.. Any ideas Aali? What could I do?  :-(
Does it load gwenter1.sfx from the CD or Hard drive? how to check if its inside?
I also tried to do everything with the opengl config file, but no luck. It's odd..

and thanks falkTX.

EDIT: I decided to skip the first two screens in laguna dream without using the opengl driver. When I started to use opengl again everything went flawlessly until the dream ended and I was back at train.
When I had to leave the cabin same error occured. Heres the new APP.LOG no idea if it makes any sense but I'll post it anyways. Also menu button worked after skipping the first two screens, its really odd...

If it really was a missing file it would make much sense, but why does it work without the driver then? That part doesn't make sense..
And as you can see from this APP.LOG there is no "Can't open file" near the crash event. Would have to know what happens exactly when the crash occurs.
All I can say is its being caused by ntdll.dll

EDIT2: I Fixed it, I'm sorry for troubling you guys. It seems like it might be my Windows XP ntdll.dll file, maybe corrupted..?
I ran it in Windows 7 and it works flawlessly, no crashes.. APP.LOG says same as before though, with those "Can't open file" things..

Please post the crash dump from the second crash.

It may very well be a problem with your system only, but I want to atleast try to find out what happened.

Ok here is the dump, it should be the latest crash since it didn't crash after that.

Hopefully it helps.

That's not very likely to be the right crash.dmp

That one indicates a problem with the original eax.dll not being installed on your system, something that will crash FF8 more or less instantly.

Okay. Sorry, I'll make the game crash again and upload it for you. (After the laguna dream sequence, when exiting cabin)

EDIT: Okay, heres the link. Now it definitely should be the right one since I just made it crash..
Would be nice to play this on XP because I can't get FF7 to work on Win7  :|
Maybe I should try to replace my ntdll.dll with a fixed one or something. Well.. I'll wait for your reply.

http://www.speedyshare.com/744931541.html

EDIT2: Well this is interesting, I just replaced my ntdll.dll with a fully functioning one.. And it still crashed!
It means the problem is elsewhere.. Maybe its display driver? I have 9.10 Catalyst beta on WinXP AFAIK
and official 9.9 on Win7

just curious if your still working on a newer version of this Aali, or if you had moved on to other projects.  I'm not sure what you could do to improve upon the current version, but i figured you might have a trick or two up your sleeve.

Hello there.

I recently installed Windows 7 (32-bit), and now Final Fantasy VII isn't working. It will start, and then suddenly, after two or four seconds, it displays a black screen, and crashes.

I tried all compatibility modes, to no avail.

This is my APP.LOG, just in case:

I can confirm what Pikkuhippi said on previous posts:

On the first Laguna "Dream World", every small event seems to crash the game. I'll explain:
The game is OK when the Laguna scene loads, but when I try to open the menu -> crash; when a battle occurs -> crash. Walking around doesn't crash it though.

Since I'm using Wine (Linux), it printed 2 errors lines when crashing:
Quote
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7bc9d6e4 "loader.c: loader_section" wait timed out in thread 0009, blocked by 0020, retrying (60 sec)
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x2e10058 "heap.c: HEAP.critSection" wait timed out in thread 0020, blocked by 0009, retrying (60 sec)
The error seems to be related to a ntdll function call.

falkTX: Yeah it did say it was caused by ntdll.dll :/
and yeah I get everything the same as you mentioned.. crash on menu and battle.
and also a crash when leaving the train cabin. I bet you crash there aswell.

strange thing though.. only crashes on (Wine as previously reported..) and XP.. not on Win7..
Aali did you test it on which Operating System?

Also KaOSoFt. As I stated myself I can't play it on Win7 either for the same reason
and thats why I would love to play VIII on XP atleast :P

And what to improve?
Well I noticed slight difference when a "battle swirl" event occurs. Without the driver there is more "light" during the effect
and when using the driver its not as cool looking since there is no light effect in it. This ofc is only for VIII.

Anyways.. still waiting for your response about fixing this Aali. :)

EDIT: KaOSoFt just noticed your APP.LOG doesn't even try to load the driver. I'm going to see if I manage to get it to work under Win7. I get initializing sound.. all the time, which is the reason why it crashes. If that APP.LOG is when you use compatibility mode, did you use run as adminstrator? Also if I recall correctly, one of the older driver releases worked just fine before.

EDIT 2: Ok KaOSoFt, try to open FF7Config.exe and reinstall the opengl driver via ff7_opengl.reg. Make sure you have your audio device selected inside the FF7Config.exe ! I was a dummie and forgot to do that, that was the reason and as you have same problem.. you should check your FF7Config.. I'm pretty sure thats your problem! :)

Since I'm going to reinstall and upgrade (?) Windows 7 into 64-bit, do you think it'll work with no problems in there?

Thanks!

i'm running Windows 7 RC (build 7100) x64 and it runs perfectly. You need to run FF7.exe as admin, For when you upgrade to win7 x64 run the vista64 reg file. and it will work just fine

KaOSoFt: Did you run FF7Config.exe via "Run as adminstrator"?
and maybe even with compatibilty mode.. I used "Windows XP Service Pack 3" and "Run as Adminstrator".

Thats your problem. You don't run the FF7 config after the reg file, or FF7 won't use it.

My settings are  FF7.exe (v1.02) in Win98 mode, and FF7Music in WinXp Sp3 mode. works with no problem

Yeah but I mean.. before applying the opengl driver via registry you should check your FF7Config for the audio device and after checking it.. click ok to add it to the registry. I had the same sound initializing problem..

I opened my FF7Config.exe -> Sound -> Sound Driver: Primary Audio Device or whatever yours is called as.. -> OK
This one fixed my SOUND_GUID. Yes I could have done it manually through registry editor aswell but why bothering if the FF7Config fixes it and I didn't know it back then (That it didn't detect my audio device).

After I did that procedure it started to work flawlessly under win7. Afterall FF7 stores SOUND_GUID in Registry aswell.. And SOUND_GUID tells the game what your audio device is. Are you sure you really checked it?

The reason for your crash in my opinion is because FF7 is trying to locate an audio device which doesn't exist..
Windows 7 and Windows XP have their own SOUND_GUID's

So just try to re-run your FF7Config as adminstrator and make sure Audio tab has set everything inside correctly!

If I said something unclearly please say so.

First time my game has crashed without relating directly to the textures projects.

Happened right as I went into a battle.

For reference, I have APZ's Cloud, Timmu's Barret, WMRP and the GUI Overhaul installed.

Actually it is related to one of the retexturing projects.
For some reason it failed while reading a PNG file. Maybe the file is broken somehow, see if you can repeat it.
