Title: FF8 Enhancing
Post by: Changeling on 2006-06-13 09:59:17
I've managed to make FF8 look and run better than ever before!  Here's how.

1. Adaptive Anti-Aliasing.  [With this new Anti-Aliasing method, FF8 will look as smooth as possible in the low resolution Square provied us with.]

2. Regular Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering.

3. Samuel's Soundfont.  [Removes the terrible midi's included with the game and replaces ones that sound almost identical to the PSX version.]

4. Creating images of all the discs.  [Makes the game's loading times next from scene changes to FMV's next to nothing]

First off, you'll want to download the 1.2 patch and the FF8 Configurator.

1.2 Patch - http://aaronserv.dyndns.org/hosting/ffsf/patch.html    (Keep in mind, there are different patches for GeForce users and Non GeForce users.)

FF8 Configurator - http://aaronserv.dyndns.org/hosting/ffsf/downloads/ff8conf22.zip
FF8 Configurator [Mirror] - http://members.westnet.com.au/bcrouch/ff8conf22.zip

1.  ATI has released the Catalyst 5.9 drivers, which includes 'Adaptive Anti-Aliasing'.

Download them here  https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

You can read more about it here http://www.elitebastards.com/page.php?pageid=12254

2.  In order to use AA and AF in FF8 with ATI cards without visual artifacts (besides a little in the menus) open Catalyst Control Center, and make sure that you switched it from basic to advanced.  Turn AA/AF all the way up, click the Maximize button for 3D, then look for a tab called 'API Specific'.  Check 'Alternate Pixel Center'.

3.  Samuel's Soundfont  It includes instructions in the .zip file.  http://aaronserv.dyndns.org/hosting/ffsf/downloads/ff8dls_v139.zip

4.  In order to create and run images of your FF8 discs you'll need to download ISOBuster and Daemon Tools.

ISO Buster - http://www.isobuster.com/dl.php?v=1&l=0
Once you've installed the program, put Disc 1 into your drive.  Right click CD, and choose 'Extract CD <image>, then select RAW.  The program will extract the image of your disc onto your hard-drive.

Daemon Tools - http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5
Use this program to run the image you've created.

Also, in order for the game itself to recognize your new virtual drive, you'll have to go into the registry and change your default drive letter to the one you've created.  Click start - run, then type regedit.  HKEY LOCAL MACHINE - SOFTWARE - Square Soft, Inc - FINAL FANTASY VIII - 1.00.  Now double-click 'Data Drive' and enter whichever letter you've chosen to be your virtual drive.  For example, h:

I recommend making this thread a sticky for newcomers.  I was a little lost when I first came here, but with help and a little experimenting I got FF8 to look the way I wanted it to.  If anyone knows of anything that I left out, please let me know.

I'm going to continue experimenting with emulators though.  If I come up with results better than these, I'll let everyone know.

Added Mirror-Link for FF8 Configurator

Mod Edit (SB): Change thread title.

If you use the Adaptive AA does it corrupt the text or anything. One thing i noticed turning the AA settings up higher was that some things would look garbled up.

I support the idea of stickying, except that I would rather see this without the fourth part.

I believe that you mean well - and it is good advice, but we have enough of a problem with people whinyb*tching about how it's ok to pirate these games since you can't find them in the store closest to you, without holding their hand and telling them how to make images.

Well, that and you could already reserve a space for instructions for nVidia users, should someone know some tricks.

Other than that, I think that stickying would be a good idea. :)

this stuff is AWESOME!!! i was using it in the past and it really made the game look far better than it was originally (i also used to have the broken graphics problem with my nvidia vga on winxp but those tools helped me really out). Definately a MUST!

wish i had adaptive AA option (only running GF3 ti200 in my media box to TVout for FF)
I'd like to see some of your best screenshots to compare to what i've got happening (of the world map, battle and a field location (preferably from the start of the game at balamb garden)

when emulating the psx version the world map and battle backgrounds are much nicer because of filtering.
Obviously the pc version is much smoother and glitch free though.

For some reason, all my attempts to get my hands on this file have been in vain...

Clicking the above link, Googling it... all avenues seem to lead to the above site I can't seem to get access to... perhaps because I live in Japan?

Which is why, as a last resort, I'd like to ask: can somebody do me a *huge* favor, and email, or PM me the ff8conf22.zip file? My contact information should be in my profile.

Hey Sephiroth - read this! (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=5209.0)

You know, this is basically like all of the improvements Qhimm has been making on FFVII, except for FF8...but having never played FF8, I wouldn't know how much more it has improved after all this...

I got FF8 working again - problem was the nvidia 91.31 (i think) drivers and using rivatuner with the anti-aliasing fix applied to the old drivers.
CORRECTION: TVout was stuffed

how can i play ff8 on my geforce with antialiasing!

bit of a late reply but try the FF8 Configurator 2.2 and the anti-aliasing fix from the FF7 stickied thread.

is possible to set in this game a resoluzion > 640x480?

not to my knowledge

Now that you mentioned it I have not updated my vid card drivers for a wile :( I just downloaded the latest driver and I guess I will install it later today
Title: Re: Get the Most Out of FF8 (PC Version)
Post by: Wuz on 2006-07-11 23:27:39
Texel Origin Alignment is the nvidia equivalent of ATI's Alternate Pixel Center.
Now that i think about it though, that only helps with AA, the "Black boxes" problem occurs with or without AA...
so 8-bit palleted textures might just be the problem.
On my Geforce 3 Ti200 before i upgraded to the 6600:

now that i have the 6600 theres absolutely nothing i can do to fix the black squares.
BOTH cards were using nvidia 91.31 forceware which kind of implies its a hardware issue with new cards, though drivers and new cards together could be to blame.
drivers and old card works fine.

No, noone of them will sit back in front of a debugger and try to write a patch for a +5 year old game...

They also did not write a Chocobo-Patch for FF7 - we had to do it.

This topic is AWESOME! I've downloaded some stuff and already tested. I just want to know how can I use MP3 files instead MID. FF8conf22 does it? If it does, how can I configure to use it?

I know this is not the right topic for this question but I want to translate FF8 to portuguese, so I need some explanation how to do it... If anyone knows how can I do it, please help! I'm from Brazil, so excuse for any error in the text.

Peace!

I have the same problem I use a geforce 6800, and I have tried to install the 1.2 patch but that does not help.

What to do????

Title: Re: Get the Most Out of FF8 (PC Version)
Post by: Zack on 2006-09-04 21:18:09
Software rendering basically means that the software renders the graphics using your CPU rather than using the Direct3d hardware renderer on your graphics card. It is often slower and the quality is not as good as hardware rendering. However it can help with compatibility issues which arise over using specialized hardware graphics systems. To select software rendering open up ff8config and on the graphics tab select software rendering.

Really Great topic.

I recently got my hand on FF7 and FF8 for PC (I had the PSX version), it was great (I'm an FF8 fan). But, when I got out from Garden, the results were simply nasting.

As I saw on the Screenshot upthere, the road didn't have an texture, and Garden looked "Squared" =/

Is there a way to make the Grapfics a little more like the PSX Version?

And the music too was terrible, but I will try those patches/soundfonts!

THANKS AGAIN!

Ugh, software mode... *shudders*

I have problems with lots of horizontal lines with my notebook. I have a Geforce Go card, not sure which one. It works generally okay in software mode except the soundfont music lags at times, which is funny considering my notebook has a 3ghz processor. Anyway, I didn't previously notice the Geforce patch so I will try that tonight and see if it works! I'll also see if there's any anti-aliasing options on the Geforce menu but I don't think there was. Oh well, I'll snoop around on the forums.

HELLO!!!

Whoa it's been AGES since I visited here, hehe! Hope your all doing fine!  :-D

I got reminded about the forums when coming on a possible fix for this FF8 black box problem. Apparently someone has managed to fix it using the GeForce 6 range of cards using hardware mode by patching it with the official 1.2 fix, however NOT the nVidia patch but the ATi one... I haven't tried it yet but it's apparently worked for someone so good luck if it does!

Ati owners can be pround right now.

Download Ati tray tools

 http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/

Download it and select options:

D3d:

1) Adaptive Antialiasing and put in quality mode.
2) Select 6x Antialiasing
3)  A- Anisotropic Filter 8x or 16x/
     B- Quality with full trilianiar
     C- Enable hi- Quality AF
4) Texture preference - High Quality
5) MipMap High Quality
6) Adicional options: Tick all
7) Optimations: Tick all

Go to settings to tune all.

Run FFVIII with non- Geforce cards et voila!: All perfect!

Wish I had an ATi card now... XD

As for the fix, I can't see anything that can possibly fix it then aside from a patch of some kind. Would any of the possibilities below assist in creating one?

Yeah they probably all suck as I don't know too much about programming or how it works, but someone has got to know a way to fix this. If it could be done on the older FF7.exe then this shouldn't be too much harder. No programmers skilled ennough to be able to find the problem or it need a proper game programmer? =(

Rather than start a new thread, I hope this one isn't dead and I'll ask here.

I have read the fixes to get anti-aliasing to work with a geforce, but the geforce card I have is not the one listed. I have a 7600, a card I really like. I didn't do the riva thing yet. In fact, all I did to try (before I did a lot of unnecessary work) was set my graphic card settings for anti-aliasing on it. I didn't see any different results, not like the screenshots the people posted here.

I was just wondering, before I do the riva things (I'm assuming this is a driver?), if anyone has gotten anti-aliasing on FF8 (hopefully it won't screw up ff7) to work on an nvidia geforce 7600 GS

EDIT: Okay, after system restoring my computer several times in the last few minutes, I have determined that for an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS with the Asus driver 91.47, in order for FFVIII to register your settings (regardless of Rivatuner) with antialiasing, you must have hardware instead of software mode set. However, this brings the black boxes that everyone seems to have. So, I guess for us people that have this card, unless there's a workaround which seems very unlikely considering my extensive searching, we're sorta stuck with either living with the black boxes or having no antialiasing. I like this set of drivers, so I have no interest in putting in Omega drivers or going down to a lower version, like some have suggested. Which is a real pity, since the game looks so beautiful with antialiasing.

I did some re-renders of the tracks in-game. I consider this one (http://mail.neos.googlepages.com/LegendaryBeast_FF8.mp3) one of the best. I did some FF7 ones a year ago. Maybe some of you remember.

Well, enjoy the render ;)

I've looked around an awful lot to see how people are progressing with fixing this... and that's just the problem. It seems all people are doing is querying how the search is coming along and nobody is even working on a fix for it. I see only 2 options... either a huge mass spam email attack to the developer (MUAHAHA!) or a very good coder comes along and does what FF7 had done to it and somehow edit the executable. Is there not anyone on these forums who is talented enough to do something like this, maybe reverse engineering or something like that? ^^

Is there not anyone on these forums who is talented enough to do something like this, maybe reverse engineering or something like that? ^^
You have to relise that not enough is known about the pc ver of ff8 to do that yet. It took years to get to were they are now to do this shit in ff7 so you need to eather learn how to do it yourself or quite bitching.

ps: since ff8 is not as popular as 7 it will take a lot longer :(

Too bad the emulation of FF8 isn't perfect, along with the graphics engine. Artifacts occur quite a bit, as depicted in the picture below:

How do i solve the black boxes issue??

My video card is a Geforce FX5200...

The only known solutions for the black box problem are...
 - For GeForce FX 5xxx cards, using older drivers may help (5x.xx or 6x.xx range).  Newer cards are out of luck.
 - On any graphics card, you can switch to software rendering in FF8config to use your CPU for drawing the graphics rather than your graphics card, and this will solve the problem.

here's a question. how much work would it take to convert the FFVII high-res patch, to one that will work for FFVIII?

i was under the assumption that square used pretty much the same basis for both games, the same structure (in terms of, field leading to everything else), they even use similar filetypes right? (don't have either installed to check right now).

i want to reinstall FFVIII, as i've just been asked to model some of the FFVIII characters for a diorama scene, but there are very few decent references available. taking screenshots in as high a resolution as possible would be a huge plus.

I know The SaiNT spent a lot of time making small changes to FF7 to get just about everything to look right and be positioned correctly in FF7 high-res.  It wouldn't be a simple "port."

I've created a launcher application that fixes the black texture corruption in Final Fantasy VIII PC on newer generations of graphics hardware.

So far I've only had the chance to test it out on my system configuration (C2D E6600, NVIDIA 8800GTX (ForceWare 163.75), Windows XP Pro. SP2) and it works like a charm.

Here's a link to the application and instructions on how to use it:
http://rapidshare.com/files/77447730/ff8_launcher_v1.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/78672746/ff8_launcher_v1.1.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/78767857/ff8_launcher_v1.2.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/79664278/ff8_launcher_v1.3.rar

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package is required to run version 1.3 of the launcher due to being built using Visual Studio 2008 instead of 2005:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&DisplayLang=en

[ Version 1.3 ]
- Vista x32 is now supported
- Non 4:3 aspect-ratio resolutions added. The display is padded with black borders to retain original
  4:3 picture aspect-ratio.
- Texture flickering on black borders fixed
- New option "Expert Mode" enabled advanced control of display properties. See OPTIONS in the readme.txt for more details.

Anyone who tries it out; I'd be interested in hearing if it worked or not and on what system configuration.

A couple of screenshots of FF8 running on my machine with the launcher:

I'm going to check what might be causing it to not work properly in vista when I get the chance. I figure it probably has something to do with the security features in the OS and the dll injection/hooks rather than the actual 8-bit paletted texture code fix.

Meanwhile I have gotten some reports that the patch works on the GeForce 6xxx series of cards running on XP which suggest it will work on any GeForce card put to-date. Still no information on whether the fix works on any ATI card.

I'm currently working on enabling additional resolutions to be used in-game and have had a great deal of success. More on that can be found here: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4908&view=findpost&p=296929 .

I have uploaded version 1.1 of the Final Fantasy VIII Launcher which can be found here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/78672746/ff8_launcher_v1.1.rar

This new version adds very early/basic support for custom resolutions within the game.

The 1920x1440 resolution works well with only minor glitches experienced so far.

Other resolutions exhibit the same texture corruption that can be replicated through forcing most FSAA settings to enabled. I have yet to find any workaround that eliminates the artifacts entirely. It seems to be a hardware or possibly Direct3D Immediate Mode issue with texture sampling when small textures are scaled to fit vertices that span a larger area. It is possible that this does not happen on ATI cards but not certain and I have no way to test.

I have worked to add support for Vista in this version and recoded the hooks to support the security limitations in the OS. Sadly when I tried it on my brothers' computer with Vista x64 it only led to more artifacts. I can't do any tests on Vista x32 but chances are slim that it will work.
Title: Re: STICKY: FF8 Enhancing
Post by: magixts on 2007-12-24 13:19:17
I just logged a session with all textures loaded plus their handles and compared it to a log of all vertices and their coordinates and UV mappings. From this information I was able to extract the structure of background- and interface textures and how they are mapped and drawn in 3d-space.

With this information I have modified the draw-calls to translate the UV-maps of all vertices in background- and interface textures to compensate for the overlap caused by the inaccuracy of directx/hardware rutines for texture filtering.

The result is exceptional; there are hardly any artifacts left in any resolution (even non-even multiples of the original resolution) from what I've seen in my testruns.
16xQ FSAA and 16x Anisotopic Filtering can be forced through the NVIDIA Control Panel and works without corruption.

Here's the updated version 1.2 of the Launcher:

First of all hi!  :-D
I want to say a HUGE thanks to magixts for the patch!Great job!
I almost gave up hope that there will ever be a fix for the black texture corruption and that I'm stuck with software rendering and oh boy a higher resolution patch?OMG  :D

so here it goes..
Intel Core2Duo E6750 clocked @ 3.4GHz,2GB ram,8600GTS (FW 169.21-Beta),WinXP SP2 the game runs great in 800x600,1024x768 and 1920x1440 resolutions with forced 16x Anisotropic and 16xQ AA from the Nvidia CP....didn't see any artifacts yet with those settings but without the Anisotropic and AA there was flickering on the top of the screen.

The game doesn't start in 1280x960 and 2560x1920 resolutions,ok the last one is too much for my monitor and i can't select 1280x960 as normal resolution (desktop) eighter but i can choose and play with the 1280x960 in all games except in this one so it looks like this resolution change isn't the "normal" change like other 3d apps have..well ok...it's not a problem at all when i can run at 1920x1440

so, some minimal requirements?

Archer Mac:
Hi! No problem, I'm glad that there are more people out there that can use and enjoy the patch than me.

The flickering is one of the known artifacts (if it's the same one that I am aware of). It's caused by my code for scaling bink-videos from their original resolution up to the current custom resolution. I couldn’t find a simple fix and since the glitch is hardly game-breaking and there are other issues that take priority (i.e. full vista support) I’ve added it to my future to-do list.
The 1280x960 resolution issue seems kind of weird and I have a hard time thinking of a good explanation for it. It might have something to do with the game using 16-bpp colors (as opposed to 32-bpp which is the current standard). Essentially the patch attempts to change the display mode to 1280x960 (16-bpp and the default setting for refresh rate); If it fails the game simply terminates itself.

Kruci:
From the CreateProcess error which translates to ERROR_CALL_NOT_IMPLEMENTED (This function is not supported on this system.) it would seem like you're trying to run the launcher on an earlier version of Windows than XP. That could also explain the first error seeing as the launcher is UNICODE; Windows versions previous to XP have very basic support for it.

The only requirement for the launcher is currently Windows XP. Some features work under Vista (custom resolutions) and others don’t (8-bit paletted textures fix). I'm working on full Vista support.

Apart from this basic requirement; different hardware and software configurations could cause the patch to work differently on different systems. I'm no expert on hardware but my goal is for the patch to work on current mainstream systems and better.

A new thread would probably be a good idea to let people know that there have been some development on this front. I'll create one and post a link in here later.

Edit. New thread can be found here (includes download link for version 1.21 of the launcher that adds support for additional custom resolutions):

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem atleast. Does it just lag a bit or is it unplayable? FSAA etc. enabled?

My code is in no way optimized for speed but in sense a hook implementation of this magnitude will always be somwhat of a system hog. Final Fantasy VIII is however a VERY old game and even if I managed to make it ten times as resource intensive through some miracle of coding; it should still run decently on any relatively new system.

Even in a old game like this at high resolution in combination with maxed FSAA could make the GPU hickup due to high bandwidth requirements.

Most of the discussion is in another thread now: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=7248.0

It's not all too common for a ten year old game to have this big of a fan base. Most of them probably don't actively take part in the FF8 community but come looking whenever they get the urge to play the game once again. Hopefully they'll find their way here and are able to use the patch when and if they do.

The different versions of the launcher has been downloaded a total of about 550 times as of now.

when you game stops working after an system/hardware upgrade - that's when the urge to play again suddenly comes out quickly.  you want something more when it turns out you cannot achieve it easily anymore (like running ff7pc/ff8pc nowadays on modern systems).

i've ditched windows 2 years ago. and i do regret is sometimes because of ff games i could play on windows (running them via wine is still difficult). recently i bought a used ps2 and ff8 for psx as a 'workaround' to this problem, so i could play ff8 some more.

Good evening, new member.

To keep a long explination short, I played FFVIII, but couldn't play it long, I have no console, only a computer right now, college and all puts a damper on obtaining a new system (especially since my old PS2 decided to eat up 2 of my games). I got my hands on the game and for some odd reason can only play it in what can literally be called the worst graphics ever. I saw this place in a link on a forum I was looking up.

The game works fine, no black blocks or anything, but I have a question about this 'configurator. It runs on CCC, well as it turns out my computer absolutely hates CCC. For some reason (even if I download the newest driver) it refuses to 'find any new hardware'. Regardless of this, the chip I have in (VisionTek X1300) works on my other games. It just refuses CCC, once I actually got it to install correctly but everytime I tried to open it, it suddenly crashed. I uninstalled it and tried to install a recent driver and it still wouldn't function. So I'm at a loss and am still working on that... but in the mean time, is there a way to get this to function without the CCC function to turn on AA?

Also, when I installed this program (or rather... attempted to) it kept saying 'application failed due to "such and such" try running FF8.EXE'. When I tried an alternative method to getting it to work, I got as beforementioned the 'black screen of death' again on my Windows Vista. Which led me to remove the files from the '/Game' file that made the game work, to the main folder in order to 'force' it to work without the annoying pop-up. Sort of an 'damned it you do, damned if you don't' situation.

I like FFVIII and would have adhored it even more if I could get better graphics on it, or even using that one program to play it in higher resolution (that one also failed) so I'm hoping there's a work-around for this. If there is any help I can provide in finding this work-around for the program and 'black screen of death' let me know. I'm still tinkering and trying to find alternative methods to getting it to work, and if I do, I'll post it here.

Until then, keep up the good work.

~ Oni

The 1.3 launcher was working for me until I downloaded and installed new video card drivers. I have 8800GTS 512 running on Vista32, the launcher worked on the 169.25 omega drivers (didn't try the original with this), stopped working with the nvidia 175.16 drivers.

Just a heads up for people with a working FF8 and don't really want to fiddle with something that's working.

Hi, I don't quite know the politics of the site (new user) but I was wondering if this cool program would get the 8-bit paletted texture fix (the one magixts made for his FF8 launcher). The reason I ask is that I get the black block textures when using this program, but with FF8 launcher I do not, but I wish to have the ability to play FF8 with the better soundfonts that FF8 configurator allows. It would be awesome if these two programs could merge into one, but thats probably a nightmare of a job.

Thanks

What up, peoples. I had the same problem with the black boxes as well, but launcher 1.3 fixed that. I had to leave Expert Mode off otherwise I'd get horizontal lines everywhere. Initially, running the launcher caused the FF8.exe to crash on me (whereas it started up fine without), but I read that the game uses EAX.dll and we know that Vista and EAX don't mix due to Vista's handling of audio, so I used Creative's ALchemy 1.20.04 on it, and the launcher worked perfectly.  :-D

How did you do that on Vista? I don't have MIDI-Support under Windows Server 2008.. But if it is possible to have that with Vista, i maybe can have it with WS2k8 too..

I get an error message if i want to open the Config. :(

Honestly, I'm not really sure. I know I have two DLL packs (http://www.threelights.de/?page=projects/d3dx9_xx_dll_files.php) installed, maybe that's it.

I'd like to add that if anyone has problems with instruments not playing in Vista (and they sure do because of how Vista handles audio) especialy when using custom DLS (like Samuel's) there is a way to fix it by putting an "old" dmsynth.dll (aka Microsoft Synthesizer) file in the game directory. The file can be downloaded here. (http://www.4shared.com/file/82470972/92afda8b/dmsynth.html)
I tested this on 64bit Vista and it works like a charm.
This dll file and the marvelous FF8 Launcher from magixts bring this game into the modern era, what more can a ff8 fan ask for? :)

in long
You're not hearing all the instruments because of Vista's sound system.
You probably noticed that instruments are missing when you use "Microsoft Synthesizer" as a music device..which you have to use in order to get any good sound at all and for Samuel's DLS.

You have to place an "older" dmsynth.dll in the folder where your game is installed and that's it. :D
I uploaded the file here. (http://www.4shared.com/file/82470972/92afda8b/dmsynth.html)

An easy way to test it is with FF8MIDI from the main site www.qhimm.com
When you apply Samuel's DLS files and try to play "Balamb garden" with "Microsoft Synthesizer" selected as the device I guess you won't hear any sound at all for like 12 seconds.
If you put the dmsynth.dll file in the same folder as FF8MIDI and then start it you should now hear the sound as it should be.

So...once again, dmsynth.dll has to be in the same folder as the main game .exe or any other program/game you intend to use it with.

Hi im new to all this launcher stuff so im quite ignorant about the terms so im trying to get FFVIII to look the best it can with my laptop PC, im running vista 64bit got 4GB ram intel core duo 2.0ghz, and got an Nvidia GeForce 9300 M GS with 512 dedicated memory .

I run the NVIDIA control panel but as i know little of optimizing video i have no clue what im doing when i move aronud things like

anisotropic filtering

antialiasing gamma correction

I just put them to the highest value or such but some dont have numeric options so any tips on what i can do to get it to look its best please ??

also when i choose the program that will use this configuration always do i put the launcher or the original exe or what?

any reply with any advice id be really thankfull

Mumiah: Hold yer horses right there! Gamma-adjustments shouldn't be adjusted unless you really know you need it (or unless funky old games like Riven commands you to), but anisotropic filtering (AF) and anti-aliasing (AA) is definitely something you'll have interest in working with. If you don't remember what the gamma was set to before you changed it, see if you can find some 'Reset'-button - or if you're satisfied with your present gamma-level, just don't worry about it. It only changes monitor brightness, more or less.

Now, to AA/AF. AA affects the contours of the 3D-models (through various possibly ingenious ways), BUT it will make demands on your GPU - loads of calculations needing quite a few core-MHz. Depending on what you set the FF8 Launcher to, and your monitor-size, you might not actually notice a difference between 2x and 4x - never mind 6x and 12x - but your GPU definitely will. If you notice lacking performance, AA is the option you should reduce first and see if it helps.
AF takes samples of the textures and scales them to... well, different resolutions, I'm not sure about the inner magickery of that. Now, this will take HUGE chunks of your VRAM. If this were a somewhat new game with 4092x4092-textures... Don't. But, well, as FF8 probably predates 1024x1024-textures, it should be safe to set the AF-multiplier to just about anything you like. You just most likely won't notice a difference. :-P The affected parts are textures on 3D-models, either placed at an odd viewing-angle or far in the distance. In other words, you MIGHT notice it A LITTLE in the combat-screens, and you'll notice it more on the world map, but NOT AT ALL in field-maps (cities, Garden, 2D-backgrounds, those tings).

(Actually: In older games - and FF8 before FF8 Launcher - AF has a tendency to cause really interesting effects. I don't remember what causes the grid-artifacts in FF8 (7 too?), but it definitely did something in FreeFalcon 3/Falcon 4 while in 2D-cockpit view.)

This thread is probably long dead,  but i'd like to ask a question.
I recently got this game for the PC, and after battling with vista i finally got it installed.
at first, it worked alright, but i wanted to install FF8 launcher and the FF8 configurator.
after messing with this for ages, i finally got a nice resolution and fixed all the black boxes, but after installing "samuels sound font", some of the instruments were missing.
then i did something that i can't remember, and long story short, the MIDI files arent playing at all anymore. FF8midi crashes when i try to load one, and the FF8 configurator just says "failed". i can still hear sounds.
even many seemingly completely clean installs haven't fixed this.
maybe i've messed with a file i shouldn't have?
i remember deleting a file called "unintall.isu" from a program files folder, and i can neither uninstall nor reinstall "EAX(tm) Unified (SHELL)". maybe that's the problem?
any help would be appreciated :D

It's better to play PSX FF8 on ePSXe emu, since it still has a lot of graphic filters, AA, custom resolution and everything and atleast it has the epic original music instead of PC version midi crap :P

I can't make a screenshot of it because it isnt actually a graphical glitch. The PSX uses a 640x480  resolution, i think. On a Televesion with a real PSX, this is fine. but on a computer with a HD screen, 640x480 is Just simply not good enough. With ePSXe or the like, you can up the resolution. just by a little bit makes it playable, but the problem with this is that the PSX doesn't know how to smoothly move Verticies, since it's never needed to, due to the low resolution. But without this knowledge, You get these awful gittery Verticies and i can't concentrate on anything else. The PC version moves the verticies 100% smoothly, and that's why i'm using it. ePSXe is also especially bad at running FF8.

I haven't ever played the PC version for reference, but I think I know what you mean. I assume bone positions get blended in fixed point on the PSX, and blocky aliasing probably hides the "space" between frames more at lower resolutions, but the finite range of motion probably becomes much more apparent at higher resolutions. Although I can't say I've ever actually noticed it as being significant when playing FF8 in ePSXe. The other thing to consider is that the emulator might just be frameskipping now and then, making animations appear far more broken up.

This is the best i can explain it. look at the soldiers right leg in both pictures. he's hardly moved at all, and a vertex on his leg like teleports up quite a lot in the space of half a second, without it moving smoothly.  the best way i can explain it is that the verticies "teleport" to the place they should be every second or so, rather than "Moving" there. I read an FAQ in the ePSXe forums, and they said this is because of "sub-pixel accuracy". its ok, until i think about it, then it's all i can think about. i guess i'll make a video if you guys still dont get me.

Post by: MrAdults on 2009-05-24 06:40:24
I think you are describing what I just descibed, NeoCloudstrife. :) "Sub-pixel accuracy" doesn't refer to any kind of sub-pixel rendering in your active framebuffer resolution - it just means that at higher resolutions and with non-software renderers, there is more precision at the point of the model's rasterization (given the size of the polygon on screen and/or anti-aliasing factors), and so you can see more gaps in between animation frames, where before it was hidden by a cluster of blocky pixels due to less precise rasterization.

I actually noticed the hops in animations in many of those characters in the PSX FF8 when first playing through it, they are just harder to see when obscured by blockiness. I'm mildly surprised that they would go to the trouble of adding smoother animation lerping to the PC FF8, but it's nice that they did (if they did).

Sub-pixel accuracy is kind of an incorrect term (it makes sense in a given context, but that's not the context you'd immediately think of when hearing it). I would call it "higher pixel granularity" or something.

Hey guys.

I've decided to get FFVIII out again thanks to the guys in work constantly talking about it. I've got a lot of useful information from this thread, so thanks a lot for the advice.

I'm almost set up now, but I'm having some issues with my 360 controller while using XBCD. The analog stick works fine in most menus and when exploring, but it's barely functional when trying to navigate through the options during a battle (Attack, GF, Magic, etc). I tried playing with the deadzone, the range and the scale but nothing seems to remedy the problem.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? And does anyone have any solutions?

Any help is much appreciated.

Edit: Nevermind, I managed to fix the issue by dropping the scale on the X axis right down.

Hi.
I've installed FF8, applied patch 1.2 and "FF8 Launcher", but I have a problem. I've got freezes every 10-15 min of playing (through "Launcher"). Freezes occur only during conversation and card games (not in combat), when they do the music keeps playing, but screen freezes (I can even hear cursor moving behind the freeze - "beep", but I can't choose anything, so it's not only the display's fault [I can't play from behind freeze]).

The only solution is alt-f4, and start over from the savepoint. I think this problem does not exist on "software render" as long as I was playing, while normal "Direct 3d" is not playable (8-bit pallet bug).

It can be anything that's causing this. Does anyone heard of the problem that I've got ? If not then it may be my PC determined.

WinXp 32bit, Athlon 3000+, GF 7600, SB X-fi

Another addition to this issue.
With SP2 for Vista they updated the dmsynth.dll as well. The best part of it is that many games got surround sound back, and a lot of games work as they should now (if they had issues because of sound).
It also fixes the missing instruments issue in FF8 when using the "Microsoft Synthesizer" as the device which is necessary for Samuel's DLS and gives the best sound.
It's nothing new for FF8 because it worked great with the method I wrote before but just as information, another way you can get normal sound back is by installing Service Pack 2 for Vista or just using the dmsynth.dll from it.

Also, I tested it on Windows 7 RC too and it works.
If anyone wants only this dll - download here (http://www.4shared.com/file/113918608/eb510a47/dmsynth_dll_from_Vista_SP2__works_on_Windows_7_too_.html)
You can put it in the game directory just like the previous, older dll that fixed the problem (I see 71 downloads, looks like it was usefull) but there is no reason to do it because the old one works just as fine.

So why would you need it? If you have sound issues with other games too and not just with FF8, this new dmsynth.dll will likely fix those problems too, on Vista and Windows 7 (currently RC status).I noticed that I got surround sound back again in all the games that didn't want to use surround in Vista and Win7 and Metal Gear Solid 2 actually starts, without sound issues+surround and is playable untill the end!
For it to work on a "global" level, you have to put the dll in C:\Windows\System32 ...the old dll there may have some protection, so you have to "own" it to delete/rename :P

nope, i dont find that at all. maybe its your PC.

anyway, i have a problem. i like to play FF games as i remember them, and as such, this means low resolution and software rendering. however, although software rendering maybe a lot less glitchy with models, it does annoing things to menu textures as well as some text.
Screenshot of problems (http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x74/beefpwnage/Untitled-10.jpg)
any way i can fix this without having to swith to Direct3D? (which i hate, and it ruins the experience and nostaligia for me)

Why does direct3d ruin it?

I'm planing on picking up the game, But since there seems to be a lot of unfix problems, i might hold off and just finish it on the PSX.
Title: Re: STICKY: FF8 Enhancing
Post by: BlitzNCS on 2009-07-17 18:58:19
Why does direct3d ruin it?
because it just does. i think it tries to overcompensate for the old, oudated rendering methods, however FF8 was graphically advanced because it utilised these old methods, and so this overcompensation actually negatively effects stuff. for instance, with direct3D, the Models just seems a bit off. i cant really explain it, but its like the models are trying to be "lit" by special smoothing methods or something. that and it ruins the textures. it blurs them to make it look "smoother", but because FF8 is an old game, the textures are relatively pixellated. this looks fine normally, but when it's blurred, it loses its effect. in fact, world maps look APPALLING, simply because it smooths everything wrong. FF8's smoothing was more to do with the textures, but direct3D doesnt roll like that. the only issue i have with software rendering is that for some reason it glitches up some textures, not model textures, but BG and menu.

Whilst the soundfont is much better than what it started with, it is still not anywhere near PSF quality in terms of original PSX sound.

Is there no one working on some kind of FF8music?

The good news is, the FF8 movies are much better quality than the PSX ones and enlarging them and enhancing them will be a much easier and much better outcome than the FF7 movies.

That all depends on aali creating a driver for ff8 in same way as 7.  I will be ready if that day arrives :)

I know this is old... but here we go. I finally got the launcher to work. I used 1.31 instead of 1.3 and launched it from my desktop. I have a GTS 210. It isn't a powerful card, but it has all the new features, making it perfect for older 3d games. I am running DirectX11. Antialiasing: 16xQ. 8x supersample transparency. 16x anisotropic filtering. Forced vertical synchronization. I think antialiasing is automatically disabled at higher resolutions, though. Looks like photobucket resizes high-res to 1024x768. Is that right?
Here is with the default settings:
[imghttp://i606.photobucket.com/albums/tt146/skyguyfromasr/Untitled.jpg]http://[/img]
1024x768
(http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/tt146/skyguyfromasr/ff812.png)
1280x960
(http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/tt146/skyguyfromasr/ff811.png)
For me, 1024+AA is almost exactly the same as 1280. Anyway, the game is beautiful and I can once again stand playing it. I just need to upgrade the sound now.

Hi guys,

After how impressed I was with the mods to FF7, I thought I'd try them out for FF8 too, however as expected I'm having a fair bit of trouble with the mods, perhaps even the game it's self (although admitedly I am using Win7 RC client).

Am I right in assuming FF8_Launcher fixed the 8-bit black box issues for nVidia cards? Because despite having the Launcher they're still all over the place. Ran in software mod fixed that, but of course I'd like to avoid the slow down of using the CPU if possible.

I've also tried using the midi's from Sam's package, but even with the older dmsynth.dll, I'm still having issues where the some of the instruments aren't playing.

Some other issues I've tried looking for but may of missed was with my 360 controller, the sensitivity is through the roof, making navigating menu's and such pretty erratic.

Might be another stupid question, but is there an already established topic with a step-by-step guide to using these mods?

Many thanks, in advance.

Sed.

EDIT - Managed to fix the sound with another soundfont, so just the graphics and controller to worry about now!

I ran into the same problem using my xbox360 controller. It was just way too sensitive for FF8 but worked fine on FF7. I wrote a faq recently on gamefaqs about a way to fix this.

I would have made it here but I just recently discovered this forum. Not sure how to help you with your graphics problem but I hope this helps.
