There are some cheap sound cards that actually use Yamaha's synths.  The Turtle Beach Guillimont.

I'm not sure if it's still supported by XP.  I'm doubting it is though since Yamaha made a separate version of the XG-50 for XP/NT only.  I think Yamaha discontinued it because it can do all of the things that it's hardware model can do but it cost $510 USD less. I'm not sure if I can legally put links up for it ;-).

Some of the models have body parts that are backwards.  By looking at the progam, might anyone be able to reverse-engineer it and fix the problem?

Okie dokie everybody, after about 6 hours of downloading I have it.  I decompressed it, updated it and then recompressed it into one mass file because I think multiple files are a pain in the an' .  If y'all want multiple files then I need to see some requests for multiple files ;-).  My server isn't the fastest but it's a lot faster than the original programmer's server.  I have a max upload cap of 24K/sec so please be pacient(sp?) because I'm working as hard as I can to make my server rock out (with the ( () ( |( out).  First go to my my website, click on enster, then click on downloads and then download the file.

Yo everbody I found the discontinued Yamaha S-YXG-100plus PVL SoftSynth.  This was by far one of the most advanced softsynth ever made.  It had AMD-compatible VL plugin support (which is a big plus for all of us economy concious gamers). VL instruments are instruments that have parameters such as embachure, breath speed, tounging/plucking velocity and all that other cool stuff. It also supported 8, yes 8, VL instruments simultaneously (as compared to 1 with the original softsynth).  I also found the discontinued Singing SoftSynth (SYXG-100 SG) that had the different japanese vocal sounds like (chi, no, se...etc).  With these Synths the realism of the music in the game can be increased somewhat.  If anybody's interested to start FFVIII VL project I would be more than delighted to help out.

well, if it is the music that is crackling, right-click on softsynth tray icon and then left click on SoftSynthesizer Setup.  In the properties window click on the Detailed Settings 1/2 tab, then go to the Direct Sound portion and click on the 'On' radio button.  Or you could alternatively mess with the quality settings. Your computer also seems up to par so, crank the maximum CPU usage up to 90%.  Though it should never use that much CPU power, this will help the processing of the XG controllers go much faster. After that, click on Detailed Settings 2/2 and select you direct sound device, which is most likely your sound blaster card.  Put the Respnse Time to slow. This will buffer the sound and there shouldn't be any more crackin'.  The only sound card that I know of that can have max settings with the response time to the fastest level is the good ol' Diamond Monster Sound MX300 with the actual Diamond Monster Sound Drviers.

once I get this model viewer downloaded, I'll be posting it on my website. hopefully it's be at least a little bit faster

Using d001.mch I tried the whole 4shorts for the x,y,z coordinates and when I put the verteces in to a 3d space it looks like a vase or something kinda shaped like a vase, or a guy crouching.  Is it supposed to look like a vase?

in .mch files:

<data>
7F 7F 7F 00 7F 7F 7F 00 7F 7F 7F 00 7F 7F 7F 00

is this some sort of container of some sort?

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Wish to be taught...
« on: 2003-12-09 16:07:06 »
ASM is EVIL!! not really, my Assembly programming professor is though.   Assembly, to me is probably the Programming language of all programming languages.  If you know what type of processing environment you're dealing with you can "crack" just about anything.  In my programming class we learned how we can take an program and break it down all the way to the binary level (which assembly isn't too far from).  If you're ever in the southeast michigan area, I can get you hooked up with some good classes for really low (where I'm taking them now was actually rated the education for each dollar spent :-P ).  Now if you wanna spend a little more money I can hook you up with some computer scientists down the street at the University of Michigan.

When I said I can't use Sondius due to my processor, I was refering to the SYXG-100 SoftSynth.  But to access the sondius instruments (aka VL instruments) you need a program such as XGPiano or XGWorks.  You can also get get the VL Instrument Modeller too.  Just search around google for this stuff, I'm sure it'll pop up.

I'm guessing that whenever AKAO pops up that's where the call for sound events are.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / PSF sound format
« on: 2003-11-30 17:42:53 »
Hey have y'all check out the PSF sound format?  It's friggin amazing!  That would be so totally awesome if that could be used in FFVIII for PC instead of MIDI.

14
The Sondius version of XG totally rocks.  I can't use it though because I don't have an Intel processor.  If y'all wanna hear some of the stuff that can really rock out with XG check out my MIDI site http://geocities.com/jrratzlaff/ or if you want to hear what the audio versions of my music sounds like (well some of them at least) check out my other site http://people.emich.edu/jratzlaff/

Yo peeps!  As we all know Qhimm is the man (Qhimm, you a re a dude, right?).  check out this post.  QHimm has finally done it!

http://forums.qhimm.com/viewtopic.php?t=2518

though he has a few questions about some of the data, so if y'all could help him out that would be great.  Just don't bug him about ANY releases of anything.  This could be revolutionary...

16
Qhimm, Minoru AKAO was the sound programmer for FFVIII.

17
WooooooHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Qhimm you so totally rock!  Thank you to everybody that helped in this effort.  I love seeing collections of knowledge be put to work!   Oh yeah, I was checkin' out some of the field data.  I forgot which file it was exactly BUT it looks like the texture and model data for the vattle scences.  The texture for battle scenes are 256x256 and for some reason or another each line of texture is separated by a line of a solid color. Just thought I'd throw in another two cents.

18
my friend's told me that there's some weird memory thing that goes on there and it loads messed up model data and just slaps cached textures on there, don't know if it's true but hey...it's a theory

19
yeah, it's the PC version.  Sorry I forgot to post that in my orginal post

20
Well, i guess I was kinda wrong.  I just found that the .mch files contain texture data at the very begining.  it looks like after that though, there is vertex data or mapping data.  It seems as though that the main character each have their own .mch file.

21
Yo, er'body...I just found the main event script (no big whoop).  It' mag999_a.dat .  If anybody could maybe decipher how it works that's be great.  I just know that it was programmed by Shun Moriya and each event seems to be separated by

Yo, I'm thinkin' that none of the model data is actually stored where the textures are.  The mag20383xx... files are just the texture and motion files.  I'm thinkin that all of the model data is stored in the .mch files.  Wouldn't it make sense to keep the model data separate from animation and textures to cut down on size.  If each scene had to store an individual model then the game would be so much larger.  Seeing as that the models themsleves are pretty much static throughout the game you could just keep them in a separate file.  For a model to be the actual model it needs to well, stay as the model that it is.  It would really suck for the programmers to have to reference a different model for each seen instead saying "We have this model that we're going to put in this scene and in this scene the model will be doing this (which is the motion data) and will use this(these) texture(s)".  This is only a guess.  But I'd have no other explaination what the .mch files are in a directory called "model" and everybody is having such a crazy hard time figuring out where exactly the vertex data is in the other file.

23
were you looking in the .mch files?

:( :erm: Sorry bout the double post I wasn't quite sure which topic it would go under.  I would've thought that it fits Tech-related more because tech related includes programming and inner-workings,  but I wasn't sure because I saw subjects like mine in the Programming feedback topic.  I hope people follow the link in the other one to get to this one because I think it would be really cool if we could get out hands on that there FFVIII Model data and make it useful :D

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / More info
« on: 2003-11-10 16:33:54 »
Oh yeah....I was also hexediting the FFVIII executable and there are craploads of Direct 3d calls in there.  I have no clue what they all do cuz I don't know directX programming all that good stuff very well.  I'm assuming (not a good idea, eh  ) that somewhere there's a call for getting model data.

-Just for clarification this ISN'T the pattern that I forgot the details (because this isn't a pattern at all, it's just an observation).  Yo, if you have any extra info and whatnot pllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase post!
