I really wish I knew what the status of the FF8HD release was. I want to play it again but I'm kind of holding out for a Steam release just to check it out. I hope it doesn't come with a Character Booster :P
-
The use of the letters HD is a marketing ploy when used in the way they are with the FF7 and 8 and X updates (and I know the literal definition of HD is the resolution but seriously that's not what we all mean when we talk about HD. We mean the quality AT that resolution. As in created to work at that resolution, not just upscaled). It's not even high quality... it's just a basic upgrade and in X's case, updated textures.
-
At least for X they cared enough to upgrade the textures as formerly DLPB reported. I'm not sure what's the financial level Square is at this point but if they are gathering money to remake ff7 it would be fare enough for me. If they are just trying to milk the cow out of fans future hopes then this is bad.
-
Except we all know that when FF7HD comes out, no one will care about Square any more. Most everyone agrees that FFXIII should be the final Final Fantasy (although some people said that about XII) and the series should end. Then square will make more shooters and sandbox games and no one will like them because they're not making RPGs like they used to.
-
Looking forward to playing FFXV (former versus-XIII). I'll buy a ps4 when it is released. Square is doing a lot of work on coin ops as well for Japan.

It's apparently coming out today! hahah

It is out... and it doesn't look better... what a surprise...

That's ok, I'm going to play it to 100% completion. I'm glad the Character Booster isn't as over powered as they one they did for FF7.
-
A Level boster wouldn't make much sense anyway ...

SGT music?
Seriously? This seems to use the old, crappy music. And even worse it's an odd format so it's not easy to replace. Why, Squeenix? Why must you ruin everything?
:-D :-D :-D
They have done it again. And they was able to top it!
;D ;D ;D ;D

To be fair, they haven't called FF7 and 8 "HD". That's been other websites reporting on it like that.
As for FFXHD, they've upscaled the textures, yeah, but the music is also remastered (possibly rerecorded? I'm not sure).

Finally I can replay FF8. If it has the PC music, that's even better considering I like it more than the PSX version.

If using aali's driver you could also just use Roses and Wine which adds the official OST music in with ogg that I programmed into it. This release wasn't needed.
[Actually to anyone who is using the "new" ff8, you can still use roses and wine but you'll need to inject my dll with hextLoader, assuming the memory addresses are the same]
FF8 already has updated music. I made it so!!! :P

release it plox !

Eh, I said I'm okay with the PC music. That's the one I grew up with, so it sounds better to me, even though the PSX music is higher quality.
Besides, Aali's driver isn't quite stable with FF8 yet.
Still, the FF7 music of the updated port sounded nothing like the original PC release (which I also grew up with), so that has me worried a bit. Are the music files unaltered from the original release? $11 is kind of a rubbish price for such an old game, so I need to make sure I'm getting exactly what I want.

I was replying for everyone :) Although I'm not sure how you tolerate midi or the pc sounds... ;D
See Roses and Wine thread for latest question.

Like I said, it's the one I grew up with. So I'm naturally biased towards it :P

Unacceptable! I'm deeply disappointed!!! How can I write a review on steam??? pffff
Ok... I just did

come on though, who's really surprised?

I believe... in 5 years!

Which part? The music? I guess they could have put some effort into it using ogg files like FF7, but FF8 isn't as popular. From what I hear, it doesn't support analog either?
EDIT: Just saw your post on Steam. If it's about the graphics, I don't know why you expected updated textures when FFVII didn't get such a treatment.
EDIT2: I see they didn't even fix the world map using low res textures issue. Your complaints are justified indeed, this is unacceptable.
-
And that they have likely lost the source code.
-

Surprised not but surely disappointed
Which part? The music?
Sorry mate! I added that as well.
Oh gosh! I cannot relive the same story all over again with the bad comments about this game and storyline by the new generation... I got a dejavu when I looked at steam comments about this game.
And if only we could import qhimm's high definition textures on those models.
This guy says it well:

Did anyone here actually buy it yet? From what I can see in the screenshots section on Steam, the movies look quite low quality. I don't recall the high res movies in the original PC release looking this bad. Perhaps they overdid it on the filtering? Or worse, used the low res PSX videos?
-
I bought it, but haven't played it yet. I will eventually get around to it after my current FF7 projects are done.
-
I bought it, I'll be testing it when I get home. I don't have the original PC version (I may end up buying it to compare), but I will be able to verify whether the FMVs are the 480p versions or the 240p versions. I also intend to see what I can find out/do about the music.
-
Haven't checked all the files, but field.fs is identical from the original PC release to the Steam release.
-
Is anyone able to report what changed?
I just looked at some youtube videos, and I see:
1. the music is NOT the PSX versions, still old crappy MIDIs (same that happened with FF7 initially)
2. textures look exactly the same
3. sound issues still remain (quezacotl gf first sounds are from phoenix, a bug present in the original FF8 release)
has anything actually changed at all?
EDIT: yeah, there's something new - online login required to play...
-
I believe all of you posting what was expected to happen... realize my torture... I hope at least this gives the game a chance for some issues to be fixed by SE after reported by the community, since steam is a strong distributor.

what is this project?
-
I bought it, I'm on NORG..It's not terrible, I replaced the music and FMVs and it's alright. I would've liked to see more but I'm ok with it. Paid for the convenience of being on steam and being downloadable.
I really can't tell but some textures look a bit better like character faces and the game looks a little more colorful somehow :P that's about it though, probably some sort of texture upscaling tool they used..

Are the save files from the original PC version and the offline save files from the new Steam version compatible? Can I take my save files from the older version and play them on the new one?
