Title: [FF8PC/PSX SLES-02080] Battle Hardcore Patch (2010-11-14)
Post by: Colly on 2010-11-14 08:28:25
Hi,

I made the second version of Hardcore Patch for FF8. It has 3 difficulty levels:

1. Ruby Medium
2. Ultima Hard
3. Omega Extreme

Application works on batch files, so if you use Vista or 7, you have to do it on admin account.

FF8 Hardcore Patch for PSX (http://www.balamb.pl/skladnica-download/pokoj-mistrza/ff8-hardcore-patch-psx.7z) - PPF files, only for PAL English version of the game (SLES-02080).
 :)

Edit: Corrected broken links.
Edit#2: Again corrected.
Edit#3: Added installer for Steam.

Hi Colly,

Thanks for this, would like to try it. :D
Could you please detail exactly what has been changed / tweaked?

Could you please detail exactly what has been changed / tweaked?

In order of importance:
- SPD/EVA
- SPR/VIT
- STR/MAG
- HP

On Extreme difficulty, Omega Weapon on 100 level has max possible statistics in the game.

I'm waiting for the feedback :)

This morning I sat down to do something which I have been looking forward to for a good long while - playing a hard mod of FFVIII. So how was it? I'd have to say that it was quite a lot of fun...and I was killed by Ifrit. Yes, Ifrit. I was stunned, dumbfounded, I had been caught completely off guard. He said 'Impudent humans' and then (for the first time) he backed it up. And Squall died. It was sad. However, thankfully he wasn't alone for long, as Quistis soon joined him in the netherworld.

Ifrit - Round 2

This time I was prepared. This time I wasn't expecting him to be a pushover. This time I would win.
Squall died.
Right away.
Once again.
Sad.
You'd think I would have thought to bring along a phoenix down or two, but no... Anyways, picture this - Quistis, standing alone, dwarfed by the fiery demon with no hope for survival, and yet, miraculously, a mere ten minutes later the soon-to-be-not-Instructor Trepes stood victorious over the dastardly foe.

Well, anyways, I had fun. Great work!

Ah a new challenger for this mod!  :)

I'm surprised too by Ifrit , but with a simple strategy you can defeat him easily without one of your characters dies.
I made a Topic for the feedback, I will be happy to give you advice. I have some tips if you want.

I soon finished the third CD.  ;)

Yeah it isn't really all that tough, I was just caught off guard with Ifrit.
I've been playing the Extreme version and just finished beating diablos and I'm getting ready to head for Timber. So far it feels like regular enemies do roughly 3x the damage, which isn't a problem. Bosses are tanks. They have a lot of Vitality and Spirit, and some strong attacks. However, overall they aren't that difficult. A little preparation and a decent strategy and you should win. Granted this is in regards to the early game. I fully expect some nasty stuff to crop up later in the game. And I look forward to it.

Very interesting! I suppose that the PC version works also with non-English versions? or not?

Yes, but it may provoke glitches. Colly is currently working on an adaptation for the French version (thanks to myself :D ) but I don't know otherwise.

I see. Well I think I'll have to try it. However I'd be glad to help in an Italian adaptation if it's needed (and if the modder is willing to do it  :-D ) .

Just gave this a shot on Ultima, and got up to Ifrit.

I noticed that it has a REALLY high Spirit. To the point where magic more or less doesn't do anything. Is this something I'm going to see across the entire game, or are other bosses going to have higher-but-not-unreasonably-high Spr? What about on Ruby mode?

While I definitely like the idea of FFVIII being made harder, I'm not sure that *completely* nerfing magic is the best idea since it just induces another imbalance.

Well, you have to find yourself how to fight :) A new version of the patch might pop out soon, but only Colly can tell when.

For what I could judge, Ifrit stand apart. Other bosses early on don't have that much spirit. You must defeat him with simple attacks and renzokuken - easy enough, even with the smallest time and no leveling up - while being carefull, because one of his move can one-shot one of your character. 'item' command for both character is mandatory.

I was surprised as much as yourself, in preparation of this battle, I had gathered Blizzara I had refined from Glacial Eye cards, just to find out this was totally useless. The choice of making Ifrit immune to magic is debatable, as all the combat-text point you towards using ice-elemental attacks... in the original game this fight was kind of a tutorial to elemental weakness/resistance.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I downpatched to the Ruby version since my initial impression was that magic was totally nerfed on the harder modes. Later bosses have been a LOT more reasonable from what I've seen. Just beat false Deling. Lost a few times because of his status attack spam and not getting Esunas off in time.

What I've noticed so far -- and I'm still on Ruby, mind -- is that GF attacks that aren't hitting a weakness do about as much damage as you'd get if you just cast the related spell element two or three times, which you could pull off during the GFs charge. GFs that ARE hitting a weakness do a lot more damage. Note that I've been boosting GFs up to about 140~ when doing this. WITHOUT the boost effect, GF attacks are total garbage, which actually makes things kind of interesting.

Also it looks like enemies do enough damage now to potentially kill your GFs, which would probably cut down on the potential for GF spam quite a bit. Same for Limit Breaks -- when your HP is low enough to get them you're really running the risk of dying.

Anyway this has definitely been interesting in the early part of the game and had made FF8 really fun for me for the first time in a long time, so thanks.

I am having trouble getting this mod to activate...
When I play the game, the enemy HP and stats are still the same as vanilla FF8.  I followed the readme directions exactly...

- extracted the archive into my FF8 root folder
- Ran the FF8_BHP.exe (from the FF8/Hardcore folder)
- Allowed 'backup' and tried to apply Ultima Hard
- The patcher appears to successfully run and complete
- I using aali's 0.7.11b driver.

I have tried re-running the patch as administrator and even resinstalling FF8 entirely, I also tried making a new game but nothing seems to work.  The enemys still have vanilla FF8 statistics and HP, and from what I've seen in screenshots they should have 10,000hp+ on Ultima.  Am I overlooking something?

It seems that Colly's patcher fails for some reason. Not sure about that, but maybe Windows security mesures could be interfering? Did you try launching it as administrator? Is your game installed in Program Files?

on a side note : Vgr, what on earth would Aali's config and APP log have to do with his problem? Seriously.

I wonder if the patch really failed after all. Colly have released two battle hardcore patches. In the first one, HP had been raised a lot, and there is a screenshot somewhere in the forum with a bitebug level 6 with ridiculous HP ; but in the second one Colly focused mainly on some other stats, like Evasion, and the HP boost is less important.

To be sure that the patch failed, try fighting Ifrit at the begining of the game. If all ice magic does nothing, Colly's patch did work, else - it did failed.
Title: Re: FF8 Battle Hardcore Patch for PC version (and English PAL PSX)
Post by: sdahlbe on 2011-08-17 01:13:34
@ random_npc  It looks like your theory was correct.  I set the patch to extreme for testing purposes, and began a new game to face ifrit.  Ifrit scans with only 1447 hp at level 6 on extreme, but my blizzard spell was hitting him for 6 damage, so the patch must have applied after all.  I must admit I'm mildly disappointed having played through most of disc 1 on hard mode while limiting my magic junctions to 20 instead of 100, I found it felt just as easy as vanilla FF8.   Guess I'll boost it up to extreme, or maybe I'll dig through the forums and find the "old" version of Colly's hardcore.

Anyhow, thanks for your help random_npc and Vgr

Post by: MeshGearFox on 2011-08-21 03:27:22
I just finished up disc 1 on Ruby. A few observations:

- Brothers was interesting. I TECHNICALLY used GF spam to beat them but I had to figure out a way to get into a position where GF spam would actually work (And even then, my initial intent was just to use GFs defensively against Mad Cow, which was pretty much 1-hit-killing at least 2/3 of my party). Took a bit to figure it out, but it was a lot of fun.

- Those dogsnake things, Seifer, and Edea were fairly easy, actually. I don't think the dogs were supposed to be hard anyway. Seifer might be improved by giving him an HP boost. Edea seemed a little susceptible to GF attacks and didn't really react or do a lot as a whole (the low reaction thing I can see as being a potentially narrative driven thing -- she doesn't see the SeeDs as a threat, and just opts to stand there and let them wail on her till she gets bored).

I will note that when I first played FFVIII back when I was... oh jesus, fourteen, I spammed GFs and got through pretty much most of the game up till Adel that way, and didn't even know how to use boost. I don't see myself being able to do that anymore.

Anyway, I hope he soon releases the newer version...

I'm sorry, I have a small delay, because I want change installer. The previous one using external program, and that's why it won't work on Windows Vista/7 on all user accounts except Administrator. In new version this problem will disappear. :)

I read all of your feedbacks, thanks :)

Hey I was just wondering if anyone who has played through Omega Extreme could comment on the difficulty later on, I'm just worried it's not really going to be hard enough  for someone knows the game really well. I mean it's pretty easy to get your characters all at 1500-2000+ HP right after obtaining Siren, and playing the card game makes you significantly stronger if you know what cards to collect and refine.

I'm just not sure what kind of player the author took into consideration when making adjustments, and I was just wondering how it is later on, since I honestly don't expect any kind of challenge for the rest of disc 1 with my current party.

I played through on Omega Extreme and I was consistently handicapping myself to ensure even the slightest challenge. I didn't avoid leveling, but I didn't go out of my way to level to make the game harder. If you know what you're doing and you don't handicap yourself (i.e., refusing to abuse cards), the game won't be a challenge at all.

That's unfortunate, I really like to utilize all the features of the games, including the card game because I actually think it's fun. Hopefully Colly will take this into consideration for future releases. It's probably hard to make a battle truly difficult without modifying the AI, but I think with a enough tweaking and feedback you could get some pretty tough monsters that everyone would find suitable for the hardest difficulty. As is stands, I feel Omega Extreme is far too easy for the Veteran FF8 player, but mostly because of the card game and junction system. On the other hand, I can see how making it so hard that the card game is mandatory could turn some players away.

Just my thoughts, I love playing through any kind of hard mod for RPGs, but strangely I don't really like to intentionally handicap myself.

Colly, have you done any AI or enemy ability modifications for version 3?  I ask because I have been working on an AI mod (also tweaking what abilities some monsters can use), however if you have already done it for version 3 then perhaps I'll start working on something else.

Does my FF8 installation need to be a certain version, or something? I've tried installing this several times on each of the three difficulty levels, and each time the game is no more difficult than before.

Originally I was using FF8 patched to v1.2 along with Aali's graphics patch v0.7.11b, but when that didn't work I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and just applying this patch the original version of FF8. No dice. The patch says it has finished applying but there is no change.

I'm running Windows XP.

Can anyone suggest anything I might try? Alternatively, is it possible to get ahold the files that have been modified? For that matter, which files should be modified? Is it just FF8.exe or are some data files modified as well?

Thanks for your time.

My account has administrator privileges, but just to be certain I tried running it as administrator, and the same thing occurred - it says the patch was applied successfully, but there is no change in the game.

Post by: cmndstab on 2013-01-10 11:58:02
I figured out my problem at last. The installation notes say to extract the files to the root FF8 directory, but actually it's the Hardcore folder itself that needs to be in the FF8 directory. The installer looks up a directory to find the data folder and when I had it in the FF8 directory, it would go out  of the directory, fail to find the data folder, and would exit prematurely and declare it was finished.

So if anyone else is having the same problem, make sure that you have the patch files still inside their own Hardcore folder, inside the FF8 directory.

There aren't currently any methods of altering Card Refining Items are there?
There aren't currently any methods of altering Junction Bonuses are there?

If there is a way to nerf Junction Bonuses that would be ideal.  Also if there was a way to alter card refining would be nice (i.e. 1 Samantha Soul from Quistis Card instead of 3).

Hi,

While playing the Steam release of FF8, I noticed I know too much of the game and there is no challenge in replaying the game.

While a user made difficulty patch might increase the fun. I was wondering how this was made and whenever it is possible to have a mode in which enemies are 50 or even a hundred levels higher than player characters?

I tried making all characters 100 LVL at the start of the game, which while did heavily increase the difficulty, it was all for nothing when I ran into the first boss, Ifirit, who's maximum level was limited to 10-20 something. So I am also wondering if manually increasing a bosses level beyond their maximum will automatically increase its stats?

So I finally got this working - and I can tell because I checked some vids on YT and saw Ifrit's HP is about 400 points higher in this than the original - but it's not that hard as of right now.

Or did the mod not take into account Triple Triad? I haven't grinded like a madman for TT cards and stuff like I did in the "Requiem" mod but I'm still packing Aga spells and the like.

I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if there's a difficulty spike? Maybe it's because I've been comparing this to Requiem a lot but things feel so much...simpler right now. I'm only at Timber so maybe there's more of a difficulty curve in this than Requiem, which started off crazy hard and only got worse, but I'd like to know if anyone here can tell me if things get significantly harder at some point?

Oh and I am on Omega Extreme.

and finally, did this mod just touch enemy stats or some character too ??

Is there a way to install this with steam version? I tryed putting the hardcore folder in the root of the game and running the progam and it says the  patch is applied but it does nothing, i tryed to look the bat files and they apparently try to search for "battle.fs" in the data folder but the battle.fs is in lang-en folder here... also is the .exe "!ff8fs" supposed to do something else than opening and instantly closing? I'm not sure what i should be doing to make it to work.

hi, i played this game on Omega Extreme and i finished it yesterday.
The First Boss, Ifrit was not easy, El Viole was also not easy, but the first challenge was for me to destroy complete the X-ATM092. I needed a few tries and i had, when i destroyed him, only 1 minute left to go to the beach. It was very close to reached the beach before the time is over. After this boss, the most enemies was easy and some bosses was maybe average. The next challange was for me omega weapon. It was also an interesting fight and I thought he would not die anymore^^. I needed 3 tries to beat him and (of course) i don't use methods to make my chars immortal, like the hero flasks or rinoas ability to make the chars immortal. I never used selphies tombola either. I think i needed round about 30 minutes to beat him. Thanks for the mod :)
How much HP have Omega Weapon on Omega Extreme?

Sadly I got bored after the second disc.
It's not an interesting mod since it only changes enemies stats. Other difficulty mods also change the behavior of the enemies and their attacks, and more.
