Unstable forums
« on: 2010-02-10 18:34:55 »
Time sure flies... it's been 3.5 years since this topic, and now it's maybe that time again. The server that hosts these forums has become overloaded and very unstable lately, and the hosting company is on and off blaming it on these forums. I'm not that keen on upgrading to semi-dedicated hosting (at six times the cost) just to host a personal hobby forum though... but the server seems to have more problems than just my site as well, so it's not exactly certain that a more expensive hosting plan is really needed.

For now, both I and the hosting company is monitoring the server and this site to try to get to the bottom of the problem. In the mean time, you may continue to experience intermittent downtime of the forums, but please bear with it.

If it turns out that more powerful hosting is really needed after all, I'll have to reconsider how to proceed I guess, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

What about these forums would be causing any instability?  The amount of users and people online at a given time seems to be at an all time low.

Perhaps certain people (who shall remain nameless) have found out how to inconvenience sites through means other than the distribution of German pornography. :-D Of course, that's just a theory based on nothing other than what has been posted publicly on the matter. :-P

If their how includes a plan to get hired by the host, and be the total incompetent bozos they'd normally be, then yes. Otherwise negatory.

All signs point to - still existing - error or misconfiguration on host's part, for which they are very quick to blame others. Not only that, but it seems like it's being used as an excuse for a money grabbing scheme.

Qhimm is just being way too nice towards the host, probably because it used to be quite a good one. Nowadays it appears to be staffed by clueless monkeys, who fabricate evidence to implicate others for their own cluelessness. It would seem that they have already lost several clients over this, and similar issues on other servers. On the upside, their support forum is quite lulzy. ;D

The host migrated the server to new hardware, sometime during last night, Yuropean time. The latest downtime some of you might have noticed was due to the switch.

It would appear to be running quite fine.
